This is an excellent solution to on-camera microphones. No more juggling with phantom-power packs or adapters for the cables. I shoot with a DSLR (Canon 550d), and use this microphone to provide to audio of the set which is then synced up with the H4N in post. The on-camera mic pics up ever focus pull, lens zoom and tripod bump. This mic, however, gives you just the clean audio in front of the camera. Still haven't attached it to a boom pole yet, and I'm not sure whether the audio is balanced OUT or not. But local to the camera, it's working fantastic. ... More

The RodeVideomic is probaly the best microhpone you will get for less than $200.00 dollars. It is perfect for making independent films and for bussiness. It provides outstanding audio quality and will upgrade by 200% your audio. It has been used in several low budget/independent Hollywood films. And don't worry about the hiss, you can fix this if your camcoder has manual audio controls. The RodeVideomic is one of the greatest microphones out there for aspiring filmakers. PTT: Use it with a boom pole to get really professional audio.

I use the microphone with the Rode Dead Cat to take videos of working dogs. It works great with my Nikon D5200. WAY better than the built in mic. The only thing I don't like is that the db pad is ridiculously hard to get to, you need a jewelers screwdriver or something similar. This is the only reason I knocked off a star. On another note this thing is rather large and looks a little funny atop my DSLR but it stays out of frame even at 18mm w/ the dead cat. I have been using this mic as a reference sound mic for film shoots. It works perfectly for what I use it for. I capture great reference sound which I then use to sync up my picture with the professional sound I recorded with my Sound Devices recorder and Sennheiser 416 mic. Even on its own it provides excellent sound for documentary or interview style recording. If you own a 5d Mark II or a Canon 7d this is a must purchase for recording great audio.

This thing is working great for me so far. I just got a canon rebel t2i and I'm on a real tight budget, so I was ver surprised to find that one of the best external mics was this cheap! $ is a deal and a half! I've only used the Rode for one college film project so far, but it picked everything up much better than the internal mic would and the internal mic on a t2i is one of the cons of the t2i. Only thing to beware is the humming. There is a slight, low humming that is picked up. This mic is great when recording in echoey places also. Wish it came with a carrying bag of some sort though. ... I use this microphone mounted on a Canon HF G30 as a external microphone at racing events. It handles the screaming 700hp engines at close range with ease and doesn't distort. Its a little long for the camera and tends to occasionally get down in the lens view without an adapter. but for the difference in price compare to the videomic pro this was a no brainer. Functionality its not any different than the videomic pro and according to the customer servie from Rode your ears will not be able to tell the difference unless you use major studio sound equipment, but for loud engines its perfect. ... This is the first high quality mic I have owned. It does sound good. I have it mounted on a camcorder and do not use the suspension system. The advertising makes it seem like this mic is mostly for SLR's but it is just fine for camcorders with a mic boom off to the side. Even without the suspension, I haven't had any problems picking up vibration. I did notice some wind noise when I didn't want to hear it, but it got better when I moved the switch up to 80 db. The only downside is forgetting to turn it off when done shooting. I guess that's more of an operator issue though. ... More

As my daughter continues to build her musical skills, I found the built-in mics on my DSLRs were not up to the standard of sound quality required. Built-in mics also pick up camera noise and spectator noise (when filming recitals). The Rode VideoMic steps up sound recording significantly. It records sound coming from the direction that it's pointed, restricting unwanted noise. It is light and very easy to attach to the hotshoe. There are few other accessories for a DSLR that give you such a significant boost in performance for under $.

This microphone is pretty good for it's cheap price! When I bought my new camera I also bought this with it and found the audio to be better than without the microphone. The only thing is if you're standing 5 feet away it won't be that loud to capture so I'm going to have to get a microphone stand or a boom mic but honestly that's not a big deal. For anyone that wants a new mic but is on a budget I recommend you get this to start off with

I've used this mic for a few interviews that i've done with various musicians while it is mounted on my nikon d300s. The sound quality is very good. I changed the mic sensitivity around in the camera but when at sensitivity level one in the camera, it works quite well, it gets a little noisy when i change the sensitivity, but its nothing unavoidable. Very reliable for the price, if you go with the pro, I'm sure you get what you pay for, this is my first purchase with this brand and i trust them already! I got what i paid for. ... More

I have been using this microphone for film projects, as I am an independent filmmaker. It works like a charm. The sound is CLEARLY much improved over anything produced by an on board mic or a cheaper boom. The only reason I give it a 4 is because the design feels a bit flimsy and easy to break. Just gotta be careful working with it, but this is the case with all equipment, so handle with care and you will be fine! In fact, we're so pleased, our film team is purchasing another. We only wish there were more RODE boom poles in stock! ... More

The build quality of this affordable mic is really nice and I have come to really appreciate the Rycote Lyre Suspension System during recording. It answers some problems that previous models I think had with them. The recording abilities I think are really nice for its size and I am currently using the mic through a small Zoom H1 recorder, Tascam DR-100 and/or the 5dIII directly and getting good results through all 3 devices.

I just recently got my Rode VideoMic and have used it for some product reviews and customer testimonials. The mic is easy to set up, basically plug and play. It picks up stereo audio at a great range and so far has been excellent indoors. I would definitely recommend getting a wind sock or something if you plan to use it outdoors, it is also pretty sensitive and picks up ambient noise (people talking in the background and ceiling fans. Over all the quality is amazing and the price is even better.

Just received it,tried it with my d750,knowing the onboard mic is to sensitive to any noise.Tried it outdoors with a short video.Sound quality wasn't to bad. Decided to change the Pad,which is located inside the battery compartment, poor, poor design. The plastic that covers the area was put on wrong,to low.You can hardly see the switches.Besides that you can't operate them.I tried with the tip of a jewlers screwdriver and couldn't.I was afaried I would break the switches.I spent 44 years working on electonic equipment of all types and this is the poorest design that I can remember.

I film shorts. I use the rode mic to film virtually all the audio. I like the size of it. It is so light and easy to use. The hot shoe mount is so convenient with a DSLR. The one thing I don't like about it is a small hiss can be heard in most of the audio that is recorded.as I mention in the title it is a good starter mic. It however is not perfect. It is great for the price though. Overall good product.

If you have used the VideoMic or VideoMic Pro and have had issues with the rubber band mounts, this Rycote Lyre will be what you are looking for. The lyre is very strong. I have been using this microphone regularly and have not had any issues with the microphone. The suspension is virtually soundproof, transmitting little to no artifact noise. I would recommend to Rode and Rycote to create a lyre mount for their VideoMic Pro. That would be awesome

After using the VideoMic for a few short films ( I am a custom video producer ) I ended up being very unhappy and returned the mic. I am awaiting the Rode Stereo VideoMic now to see if this will sound better. This is a great mic and I see it used all over. Probably one of the best that doesn't require a mixer or XLR ports. I shoot a lot of documentaries and ENG style of shoots so having a mic like this is ideal. I have lavs as my primary source of sound and my Rode pro as my back up. I'm putting this guy away and getting the Rode Pro model that just came out and will arrive in a week! Seems like it doesn't have tiny rubber bands to suspend the mic. Plus the Pro is much smaller which makes it even better for traveling... I'll have a review of that soon when it arrives! ... More
