I just bought this shotgun mic to use with my Canon 5D Mark II. I am a still photographer dabbling with video. After testing it out and being impressed with the quality, I used it during the reception of a wedding to shoot some footage of people congratulating the couple. There was a live band, so the music was very loud. I was amazed at how well the mic was able to isolate the interview subjects from the ambient noise. The sound is completely clear, with zero blow out or anything close. I am so glad I got it!

The build quality of this affordable mic is really nice and I have come to really appreciate the Rycote Lyre Suspension System during recording. It answers some problems that previous models I think had with them. The recording abilities I think are really nice for its size and I am currently using the mic through a small Zoom H1 recorder, Tascam DR-100 and/or the 5dIII directly and getting good results through all 3 devices.

I got my hands on this mic a couple weeks back. For the first 5 mins I was irritated because I was picking up static and couldn't figure out why, until I realized that the mic is battery operated (it's just a 9v battery nothing serious). Overall it's a pretty good mic, I haven't had any serious problems with it, or really any at all. Definitely a great buy for it's price, specifically from this site, I believe bhphotovideo.com has the cheapest price online that I found. Definitely a good product at a great price point

This is the first high quality mic I have owned. It does sound good. I have it mounted on a camcorder and do not use the suspension system. The advertising makes it seem like this mic is mostly for SLR's but it is just fine for camcorders with a mic boom off to the side. Even without the suspension, I haven't had any problems picking up vibration. I did notice some wind noise when I didn't want to hear it, but it got better when I moved the switch up to 80 db. The only downside is forgetting to turn it off when done shooting. I guess that's more of an operator issue though. ... More

I've used this mic for a few interviews that i've done with various musicians while it is mounted on my nikon d300s. The sound quality is very good. I changed the mic sensitivity around in the camera but when at sensitivity level one in the camera, it works quite well, it gets a little noisy when i change the sensitivity, but its nothing unavoidable. Very reliable for the price, if you go with the pro, I'm sure you get what you pay for, this is my first purchase with this brand and i trust them already! I got what i paid for. ... More

The VideoMic by Rode is a dichotomy - it delivers superb audio quality but its construction is fairly flimsy. The all-important DIP switch to adjust DB output is both tiny and nearly impossible to access, unless you are the size of a mouse. Extra shock mounts are included because they are made of cheap plastic. I am somewhat disappointed because Rode, a company that makes outstanding microphones, didn't need to cheap-out this shotgun, even at its low price. My suggestion is to spend a little more for something more durable.

After using the VideoMic for a few short films ( I am a custom video producer ) I ended up being very unhappy and returned the mic. Sound was very thin and tinny sounding with this mic and the previous mic that I was using ( can't remember the name or brand ) that was 40 dollars sounded worlds better. I am awaiting the Rode Stereo VideoMic now to see if this will sound better. Please note - I do not use a boom pole, and use the mic shotgun, and most of my actors/actresses are between 3-8 foot away while filming. Camera is a Panasonic HVC40 ... More

I Shoot professional skiing, and am using this shotgun mic on my Canon 7D. The sound quality, Clarity, and the amount of noise it pics up from a distance is outstanding. First time listing to 60fps shots with volume i was blown away. Highly suggested for the price.

I just recently got my Rode VideoMic and have used it for some product reviews and customer testimonials. The mic is easy to set up, basically plug and play. It picks up stereo audio at a great range and so far has been excellent indoors. I would definitely recommend getting a wind sock or something if you plan to use it outdoors, it is also pretty sensitive and picks up ambient noise (people talking in the background and ceiling fans. Over all the quality is amazing and the price is even better.

This mic will instantly and easily improve the audio quality of your DSLR videos and therefore provide an overall better final product. Read the description carefully, this is not unidirectional. However, it still provides much better audio than any built-in mic. I opted for this over the newer VideoMic Pro. The only downside I can see is the the pad switches are hard to get to. You have to remove the battery and set dip switches to get your -10 and -20db pads. This mic really shines if you plug in to a mixer or portable digital audio recorder. I would easily use this in the studio for V/O. ... More

This is a great mic and I see it used all over. Probably one of the best that doesn't require a mixer or XLR ports. I shoot a lot of documentaries and ENG style of shoots so having a mic like this is ideal. I have lavs as my primary source of sound and my Rode pro as my back up. I'm putting this guy away and getting the Rode Pro model that just came out and will arrive in a week! Seems like it doesn't have tiny rubber bands to suspend the mic. Plus the Pro is much smaller which makes it even better for traveling... I'll have a review of that soon when it arrives! ... More

If you have used the VideoMic or VideoMic Pro and have had issues with the rubber band mounts, this Rycote Lyre will be what you are looking for. The lyre is very strong. I have been using this microphone regularly and have not had any issues with the microphone. The suspension is virtually soundproof, transmitting little to no artifact noise. I would recommend to Rode and Rycote to create a lyre mount for their VideoMic Pro. That would be awesome

I film shorts. I use the rode mic to film virtually all the audio. I like the size of it. It is so light and easy to use. The hot shoe mount is so convenient with a DSLR. The one thing I don't like about it is a small hiss can be heard in most of the audio that is recorded.as I mention in the title it is a good starter mic. It however is not perfect. It is great for the price though. Overall good product.

This microphone is pretty good for it's cheap price! When I bought my new camera I also bought this with it and found the audio to be better than without the microphone. The only thing is if you're standing 5 feet away it won't be that loud to capture so I'm going to have to get a microphone stand or a boom mic but honestly that's not a big deal. For anyone that wants a new mic but is on a budget I recommend you get this to start off with

I have not used the mic much yet, but I did check it out to see how it functions and to compare the audio to the camera without it. The sound is very much better than the camera's mic. I am using it with a SONY A55, so I needed an adapter. ... The adapter raises the mic a bit, so I can look through the view finder, which I prefer. I am waiting for the spring season of bird songs, so I can take good audio along with the video. I gave the mic a rating of 4, mostly because I have not used it in the field yet. ... More

Great audio quality microphone and the included shock mount is great. I'm a bit disappointed in the build quality of the actual mic as it's made completely out of plastic. I've owned the azden dslr mount shotgun mic and was more impressed with the build quality with that over the rode but the Rode's audio quality is much better. That being the more important factor, I'm curious to see how long the Rode will actually hold up. Overall good mic.

The Rode Mic is a great piece of equipment for the price. The sound is very good. I tried it on a high-end video camera. The sound was crisp. I was going to go with a cheaper boom mic, but got talked into getting the Rode Mic instead. So, spend a few more dollars, get the sound that you are looking for.

Everybody kept telling me to buy a Rode mic for my DSLR. I was using a Zoom recorder and the quality of that device is pretty decent; but the quality of the Rode mic is brilliant! Itll shake a little bit mounted on your DSLR, beacause of the flimsy design of the schockmount. You wont hear any interference or any noise at all, though. This is a must have for all those who own a DSLR.

Purchased this to replace the built in speaker on my Nikon D300s and the difference in quality is phenomenal. Indoors, from approx. 15 - 20 feet away it will clearly pick up a quietly spoken voice. I've tried it outdoors in a moderate breeze and the supplied windshield performed well, cancelling out the vast majority of wind sound. It's basically a plug and play device on my camera, I never had to adjust any settings. The only problem I've had has been forgetting to turn it on via the switch on the back. Doh!!!

Mic works very well and has wonderful sound, however the rubber bands are a little soft and it does bang around a bit if you aren't careful. Not an issue on a tripod but could be handheld. My biggest gripe is the deadcat; due to how far the front support sticks out under the mic, the whiskers rub up against it and make a ton of noise. A short stretch of velcro around that area seems to help and does not reduce quality. Overall a good mic but had the Videomic Pro been available it would be my choice.
