I use the VIDEO MIC made by RODE on my new 60D HDSLR made by Canon. It is a greatesy shotgun mic for HD video production. it is the cleanest and best sounding external microphone I have found anywhere. I would recommend this microphone to anyone using a HDSLR camera for HD video production. I have never had any problems out of it at anytime. The 9 volt battery last around 100 hour or so before I have to change it out. Very long battery life. This same mic is also great on my SONY A1U HDV camera as well. It works great as a second shot gun mic on a long form video camera for using 2 shot gun mics at the same time. I will be buying about 4 to 5 more of these with in the next year. ... More

I bought this mic as an entry level product to start getting better audio quality. It is very simple to operate and goes right on the shoe mount. Two things that I found that were annoying were 1) the red cradle/shock mount sags under the weight of the mic so the dead cat actually shows up in the field of view with my 24-105 lens. I have to jam something between the lens and mic to elevate it out of the way. 2) it has a hissing sound on all my video. It doesn't matter if I have the 80Hz filter selected or not. But for the money this is a good value to get things started. The quality of the mic itself is good overall. ... More

I have a Panasonic HDC-HS700, which has a hot-shoe mic mount inset a bit in an indentation on the top of the camera. The Rode's shock mount is on top of a 3 inch plate that got in the way, preventing me from slipping the mic onto the camera shoe. It looks like the actual threaded base could be moved to the front of the plate (it comes attached in the middle), but then the back end would stick out from the back of the camera, blocked the eye piece. Not really Rode's fault, I suppose, but definitely doesn't work on every camera. Consult with a salesperson before you buy this mic! ... More

The crew and myself started film making proyects again, but now we started to adquire equipment. This is the first shootgun mic that we purchase. I give it a try in the interviews we did for information in the new proyect we have for our university film festival. The sound is amazing in both exterior and interiors. We used with a D5100 making it a great DSLR with a good sound recording. We're going to start producing this week. I'm very excited...

The mic was used on my DSLR. It was a bit large, combersome, and fragile for my taste. The audio is fine for small room or up close audio. I used it to test in a large room with a band playing and it it wasn't able to pick up the fidelity and sound that I heard while recording. Was a bit bummed with the recorded audio because the band sounded GREAT and the video was pretty good too. Currently, there are newer mics out that are smaller and not as intrusive; so unless you can pick this up for a BARGAIN, I'd save up and consider other options. ... More

I use this on my Canon 7D to capture audio. As most people know the on board mic is junk. With the new firmware update the manual controls for audio help me dial in the sensitivity of the Rode. The audio quality is great. No problems there. The mic does not show up in the shot... even when Im using my 10mm. The construction of the mic is not so hot however. It looks as if it was cheaply put together in China. The cold shoe also came very loose and had to be tightened up. Hey but for $$ this mic still does a great job. ... More

I am an amateur video journalist and do a lot of interview and shoot at concerts. This mic works great for those purposes. It also fits perfectly in my camera bag. If you're trying to gather music audio for background this mic will do the trick, but if you want something a little crisper it might take more post-production work on your end. My main complaints are that it feels a little flimsy at times because of the plastic suspension system. I highly recommend using this mic on a boom pole for better sound during interviews, otherwise there may be some background hum. This is an easy to use mic, that takes pretty good audio for the size and price. ... More

The bottom line is that this is an affordable mic that if used correctly can give you pretty good results. I purchased this for my own personal use mainly as a step up from the on camera mic on my 60D. I eventually used it on many small corporate shoots and was getting reasonably good audio with it. B&H sell this as a bundle with a cheap Rode boom pole and 10ft. cable which was a steal at around $ it is the system I still use for smaller projects. My only problem so far with the VideoMic is the shock mount. It can be quite noisy if there is much shake, but with the right boom op. it isn't an issue. ... More

I'm a beginner age 16, but I run my own photography page, I shoot both photos and videos. My videos consist of either people videos or track cars. I've used this microphone on several occasions already. When recording voice it definitely makes my voice sound lower. But for cars and exhaust its great. It unscrews from the hotshoe pretty quickly and easily but holds firm when you put it on. If you buy this, take note that you SHOULD be running magic lantern to get the best audio, and you're going to want to lubricate the shock mount rubber bands to prevent squeaking.Look up Kyle Phan on Vimeo, I have my mic test video up on there. My only video so far. ... More

I use the Rode shotgun mic for primarily school project films, to include short stories, music videos, and compositions. I absolutely love this microphone, and fell in love with it completely when I bought my own, which came bundled with a micro boom pole (about 7 feet long), and an extension cable. This mic can pic up sounds crisp and clear from very far distances away. This mic can pick up a LOT of sound. Of course, in some cases, this can be detrimental, but a good camera operator knows how to control the capture levels of the audio so that it can be controlled. The one problem you will NEVER have with this mic, is not picking up enough sound. ... More

Only used it a couple of times so far on my Canon 5D MKII, and then fairly gently. So far, it's great. It significantly improves the quality of the sound captured by the camera - I'm not shooting professional video, I just add video clips to my slide shows to give more energy, so my needs are fairly modest. Very easy to operate, and it fits fairly easily in my camera bag. The only minor downside is that it gets in the way a bit when taking stills through the viewfinder, so it's not as easy to quickly switch back and forth between stills and video. But, for the dramatic improvement in sound, this is a small price to pay. ... More

Unfortunately, this mic was too much for what I needed and I reluctantly returned it. It was too big for me to carry and the price was really out of my budget (plus I wanted stereo sound for the mini-concerts I recorded). But this mic definitely does what it claims: deliver good sound quality w/ filtered out much unwanted noise and captures just what is being shot. The recordings I took had clear sound from about 50ft and no noticeable distortion (I was recording taiko performance) w/ virtually no ambient noise from the people talking around me. I could definitely see this mic being used for actual film, professional or broadcast use. ... More

I'm using this mike with my Canon HF S20 Hi-Def camcorder. The built-in mike is okay but picks up noise in every direction. The Rode VideoMic not only provides much more focussed directional sound - it also gives a much fuller, clearer and richer sound quality. The difference is very visible when you look at the wave forms - more range and clarity. It turns an amateur production into something very professional. Mounting the microphone to the camcorder was very straightforward with the shoe adapter recommended by B and H. This gizmo also provides a very solid grip on the cameral and actually makes it more stable in hand-held use. ... More

I use the microphone with the Canon 70D to film inexpensive commercials and house videos for the web. It is very easy to use. It uses 9 volt batteries and does not come with one. I would suggest when going on a shoot at least have 3 extra batteries. I plug it directly into the camera to record sound and I do get a little bit of static noise. I'm trying to get a digital sound recorder to see if the static is because of the camera or the microphone. I use Adobe Audition to remove static. I would suggest getting it with the kit that includes the boom pole so you can get closer to your subject. I also got the 25 ft extension cord. I was told not to get the extension cord because the sound would not be as good but after several test I can not hear any difference. ... More

I ordered the Rode VideoMic for my Nikon D7000 (make sure you order a rode mic that uses a battery for the D7000) and was very happy with the sound quality of my video. The Nikon D7000 needs an external microphone when shooting video, the built in mic produces videos with an unpleasent sound quality. I spent hours researching and watching videos of people testing microphones before I ordered the Rode VideoMic. My first Vlog with the Rode looks and sounds like a professional shot it.

This mic kit is a must have in a socially distanced world. I shoot content with my phone for work all the time. I used to use a lapel mic that plugged into my phone, but that is not an option right now. I tried a few of the small directional mics made for phones, but honestly, none of them provided any noticeable difference than simply using my phone's mic for interviews. Our video editor says that for a mic to work well, it needs a separate source of power. He sent me a link to this Rode kit, and I've been very happy with the results. ... More

I'm putting this guy away and getting the Rode Pro model that just came out and will arrive in a week! Seems like it doesn't have tiny rubber bands to suspend the mic. Everybody kept telling me to buy a Rode mic for my DSLR. I was using a Zoom recorder and the quality of that device is pretty decent; but the quality of the Rode mic is brilliant! Itll shake a little bit mounted on your DSLR, beacause of the flimsy design of the schockmount. You wont hear any interference or any noise at all, though. This is a must have for all those who own a DSLR.
