The Rode VideoMic is a great find. Mounted atop your video camera, it dramatically improves the sound quality of your recordings as the directional properties, high sensitivity, shock-mounted design and low noise characteristics allow for a highly-improved recording over the built-in mic. But its use doesn't stop there! The mic can be attached to a mic stand or boom pole with the built-in threaded mounts for using away from the camera; the directional properties and high sensitivity make it an excellent dialog mic.

The mic itself is a good mic,but the shock mount is the weak link. When mounted on my Sony HDR-FX7,it blocked access to the ZOOM and RECORD buttons that are on the handle of the camera. The shock mount is made of lightweight, flimsy plastic and uses something similar to rubber bands to suspend the mic within the mount. When the mount breaks(and it will break),there is no other way to mount this mic to your camera, forcing you to buy yet another flimsy mount from RODE.It's a good mic that deserves a better mount.

We bought this for both our personal use and for our part-time photo and video business as an upgrade over the in-camera microphone. We have found the sound quality to be an improvement over the Azden SMX-10, which a friend owns with the same video camera. Just as important are the long life of the 9 volt battery, and the on-off indicator light. We have recorded several times with it so far and I can't complain. A side bonus is Rode's online Rode University which has short videos about how to improving sound recordings.

Though I've only used the mic a few times it does a very good job of picking up distant sound and is much better then athe built-in mic that comes standard with my Sony video camera. I usually only film on a tripod when the camera was stationary, so movement and handling noise are usually not a problem, though I did notice that even though it has a shock mount with rubber bands, when you move the camera the rubber bands make a squeaking sound that is picked up by the mic. Some oil or baby powder added to the areas where the bands contact the mount should eliminate that problem. Overall a very good mic. ... More

I picked this up for use with my GoPro, as the onboard mic on the Hero is not very good at all, especially in wind. I've used this for capturing conversations, dialogs and interviews, outdoors, in winds up to 20mph or so and it works great especially for the price. Have also used it to catch some ambient sounds (waves, etc), in wind, and the Windbuster does a really good job. Very happy with this purchase

The bottom line is that this is an affordable mic that if used correctly can give you pretty good results. I purchased this for my own personal use mainly as a step up from the on camera mic on my 60D. I eventually used it on many small corporate shoots and was getting reasonably good audio with it. B&H sell this as a bundle with a cheap Rode boom pole and 10ft. cable which was a steal at around $ it is the system I still use for smaller projects. My only problem so far with the VideoMic is the shock mount. It can be quite noisy if there is much shake, but with the right boom op. it isn't an issue. ... More

Recording direct into most DSLRs is not going to give you amazing audio quality but using this mic is much better than the built in mic. If you were to record to a pro porable recorder my guess is you would get better results. My Nikon D5100 seemed to live the setting at medium for th ebest results and low for loud signals like concerts etc. It is a mono mic recording the same thing to stereo channels. I need to do more testing. It's plastic and seems like it could break easily. If you hvae the money you might want to go for the pro version for another 50 bucks. OVer all it's pretty good for the price. ... More

The crew and myself started film making proyects again, but now we started to adquire equipment. This is the first shootgun mic that we purchase. I give it a try in the interviews we did for information in the new proyect we have for our university film festival. The sound is amazing in both exterior and interiors. We used with a D5100 making it a great DSLR with a good sound recording. We're going to start producing this week. I'm very excited...

The mic was used on my DSLR. It was a bit large, combersome, and fragile for my taste. The audio is fine for small room or up close audio. I used it to test in a large room with a band playing and it it wasn't able to pick up the fidelity and sound that I heard while recording. Was a bit bummed with the recorded audio because the band sounded GREAT and the video was pretty good too. Currently, there are newer mics out that are smaller and not as intrusive; so unless you can pick this up for a BARGAIN, I'd save up and consider other options. ... More

When reviewing different mics in this price range, we liked this one, but had some concerns about the indoor interview quality. But so far that's been perfect! The controls are easy to work with, it sets up easily and the sound quality has been great. We recently recorded a conference and we've had to do very little post editing compared to others in this category. The only complaint is the cable length when connecting to our camcorder. But that's more about where the input is located on our camcorder than about the mic itself. In my opinion, it's the best option for the price. And I'm so glad we purchased from an authorized dealer. ... More

I ordered the Rode VideoMic for my Nikon D7000 (make sure you order a rode mic that uses a battery for the D7000) and was very happy with the sound quality of my video. The Nikon D7000 needs an external microphone when shooting video, the built in mic produces videos with an unpleasent sound quality. I spent hours researching and watching videos of people testing microphones before I ordered the Rode VideoMic. My first Vlog with the Rode looks and sounds like a professional shot it.

I recently purchased a Rode Videomic with a few other accessories. I am an amateur filmmaker and am about to film my first movie. Doing some test takes I learned it is reliable, consistent, and it has Great Sound Quality! I have had a different microphone in the past that recently stopped working. A filmmaking website suggested the Rode Videomic to me. I am glad I got it. Considering the price, it delivers professional quality while being easy on the budget. With the PG1 Cold Shoe Pistol Grip it mounts easily ontop of my DIY boom pole! It is a great buy with great quality! My rating? 5/5 stars! ... More

I use the VIDEO MIC made by RODE on my new 60D HDSLR made by Canon. It is a greatesy shotgun mic for HD video production. it is the cleanest and best sounding external microphone I have found anywhere. I would recommend this microphone to anyone using a HDSLR camera for HD video production. I have never had any problems out of it at anytime. The 9 volt battery last around 100 hour or so before I have to change it out. Very long battery life. This same mic is also great on my SONY A1U HDV camera as well. It works great as a second shot gun mic on a long form video camera for using 2 shot gun mics at the same time. I will be buying about 4 to 5 more of these with in the next year. ... More

I am an amateur video journalist and do a lot of interview and shoot at concerts. This mic works great for those purposes. It also fits perfectly in my camera bag. If you're trying to gather music audio for background this mic will do the trick, but if you want something a little crisper it might take more post-production work on your end. My main complaints are that it feels a little flimsy at times because of the plastic suspension system. I highly recommend using this mic on a boom pole for better sound during interviews, otherwise there may be some background hum. This is an easy to use mic, that takes pretty good audio for the size and price. ... More

I was looking for a value deal, and found this. This shotgun mic has very good audio quality. It attaches right to your shoe, and the boom when needing to do interviews or regular movie shooting. The cable is smaller and might be the one thing that might need upgrading, but it works for now.

I use this on my Canon 7D to capture audio. As most people know the on board mic is junk. With the new firmware update the manual controls for audio help me dial in the sensitivity of the Rode. The audio quality is great. No problems there. The mic does not show up in the shot... even when Im using my 10mm. The construction of the mic is not so hot however. It looks as if it was cheaply put together in China. The cold shoe also came very loose and had to be tightened up. Hey but for $$ this mic still does a great job. ... More

Huge improvement over the on camera mic and good quality, but it can't perform miracles and starts to sound hollow once you get more than 5 ft. away that worsens with distance. For static shots / interviews, I am using a 10' extension cable and attaching the mic to a small tripod just outside of the frame - the results are great. If you do this, moving the cable while shooting can result in crackle - a result of the smaller 3.5 mm audio jacks.

Use: Independent films, promotional videos and family events. Pro: Wonderful job of picking up directional audio and lifetime warranty. Easy to mount and use. Lightweight and durable. Con: Mine came with a wiring defect - it remains powered up when in the off position. When in the off position the microphone still picks up sounds but at a lower quality. A friend got the same mic with no problems. This wiring defect doesn't seem to diminish the quality in the regular on position but it drains the battery power. I will be getting a replacement (same kind) when my current project is complete. ... More

I've used this microphone on several occasions already. When recording voice it definitely makes my voice sound lower. But for cars and exhaust its great. It unscrews from the hotshoe pretty quickly and easily but holds firm when you put it on. If you buy this, take note that you SHOULD be running magic lantern to get the best audio, and you're going to want to lubricate the shock mount rubber bands to prevent squeaking.Look up Kyle Phan on Vimeo, I have my mic test video up on there.
