I have used the mic on and off camera to record interviews and speeches. As with most mics, it works best when the mic is closest to the subject. When I have the gain settings dialed in correctly and the mic is close to the subject, the sound is great and requires minimal noise reduction. This is not a small mic. It takes up a lot of space around the camera. I would recommend getting a dead cat for outdoor use as any amount of wind will be captured by this mic.

I also have the Canon HV30 and have experienced the poor quality of the onboard mic, with the infamous motor noise. Reviewed numerous mic models, and while there are better shotgun mics out there, they are much more expensive and the VideoMic is great for the money. I use it with a Samigon One-Touch Folding L Flash Bracket to increase the distance from the camera, virtually eliminating motor noise pick-up. I have it at the -10 db setting, and get excellent voice and sound recordings with it. Be aware of ambient background noises, like air conditioning, as it may pick up these sounds as well. ... More

If you need to plug a shotgun mic straight into your camera, skip this mic and go for the VideoMic Pro which allows more control over audio levels and eliminates hiss/noise. I wish I would have known this before wasting my money on a mic that requires post-production noise reduction in every audio clip. It's not a difficult problem to edit. However, it drastically slows down workflow.

Although this product seems to be better then my in camera mic, it still picks up a lot of the road noise nearby. I have tried moving switches and testing, but don't really notice much difference in noise. However, this review might not be accurate since we have only used it for one YouTube video, but still noticed the noise in the back ground. Next I am going to try and get the mic closer to the subject off camera and see if that helps. My camera does not have a volume control so this might also be the reason for the noise. So again, this might all be operator error and not the product itself. Just sayin' - but if my review changes after several uses, I will change my opinion. ... More

I bought this to pickup scratch and the occasional interview in a pinch. There's a known hiss when plugged straight into some cameras. It can be avoided with an DSLR adapter. Or you can try to remove it in post. I'd rather not have another step in post, especially when there are situations when another frequency might also need removal. Its bigger brother has a work around for this hiss, so I'll either pick that up or maybe even the Shure Lenshopper.

I used this on the Canon 3Ti and what a difference. I did the same video of Safety Talk Contest the year prior in the same Conference room with the same audio set up. Even had some of the same people competing this year. Well we played back the year before to see the difference with this years. Well the difference was night and day. Much better sound quality. I could hear every word from 50 feet away. Last year with just the camera we could not hear when someone was talking or making noise anywhere else in the room when played back. All back ground noise was gone except a little coughing in front of the camera. All the other noises are there but you do not notice them. I have tried no others so I can't compare but I am VERY happy with this Mic so far. ... More

This would be a fine microphone for DSLR use were it not for the el cheapo shock mounts. Within a few weeks of buying the mic I found the mounts became very squeaky, even with the slightest movement. You can have the best mic around but if it's cradled by squeaking rubber... you will hear squeaking rubber. I'll try lubricating the mounts but it's disappointing. It's also a pretty large mic for a DSLR. My bad for buying it hastily. Wishing I had gone with the Sennheiser MKE 400 or the Rode VideoMic Pro.

I use the VideoMic with a Panasonic GS500 mini DV camera and it works great. I believe that I wouldn't be able to find anything in its price range that would be any better. It uses a cold shoe attachment, rather than the hot shoe type called for in the camera users guide, but that does not cause any problem at all. I can set the gain just as I would expect (in the camera). I just can't use the zoom mic feature (on the camera). I have used it in a coffee shop as well as at an outdoor soccer game with great results. It is also a good size for the camera---not too long or too short. Just remember: TURN IT ON! ... More

The Rode VideoMic is a great find. Mounted atop your video camera, it dramatically improves the sound quality of your recordings as the directional properties, high sensitivity, shock-mounted design and low noise characteristics allow for a highly-improved recording over the built-in mic. But its use doesn't stop there! The mic can be attached to a mic stand or boom pole with the built-in threaded mounts for using away from the camera; the directional properties and high sensitivity make it an excellent dialog mic.

The mic itself is a good mic,but the shock mount is the weak link. When mounted on my Sony HDR-FX7,it blocked access to the ZOOM and RECORD buttons that are on the handle of the camera. The shock mount is made of lightweight, flimsy plastic and uses something similar to rubber bands to suspend the mic within the mount. When the mount breaks(and it will break),there is no other way to mount this mic to your camera, forcing you to buy yet another flimsy mount from RODE.It's a good mic that deserves a better mount.

I bought a used one and I thought I was going to get a reasonable deal, but no. The first and most serious problem is that this supposed shotgun microphone is super sensitive and its pickup range is virtually 360, this is a BAD thing for an audio device that is intended to only pick up sound from a narrow cone (pick up angle) of a direction to a mono channel. I can still hear sounds 25% of the subject's volume from front when turned to the back or sides. The only way is to really lower the DB, and that is the next problem, there are 2 tiny switches inside the battery bay that lowers the manual audio level. But then you also reduce the sensitivity and amplitude range at the same time. It has a standard TRS mono audio jack, but the cable sways a lot and bounces against the suspension unit which also causes noise, it's just an overall bad design that results in poor audio recording. For something that costs this much I would have expected better quality and sound isolation. ... More

Bought the Rode Video Mic pro despite a B&H salespersons warning that it was flimsy as all hell!!! He was right! Exchanged for this, his original recommendation. While its bigger, the Rycote mount is soooo tough and durable. Add in the high build quality with the thicker, coiled input cables and you have a piece that has been amazing for run and gun shoots in the city from fashion shows to editorial interviews. Its taken being shoved into a packed bag and rolling around the subway wonderfully. The sound? Excellent! Beautiful and warm. It captures things well and really gets clean sound from loud rock bands near the stage to interviews. Frankly, I like the sound better than my Rode NTG-2 at times! ... More

I used this Mic on our 7D and it worked really great. I do recommend using a secondary source for stereo recording if you need to capture multiple people at the same time. I did no audio post processing and you can see the first video that I shot with this at @. My only complaint about it is that it only has the 1/8 inch jack and no recording input controls so you have to rely on your source to regulate levels. I also used this in a sound proof room and the recording on the 7D was fair. I was actually hoping to have really clean crisp sound with it but it picked up the AC. In all I would totally use it again in any video that we do. Its really a must have tool in your DSLR video recording expeditions! ... More

Sounds great, costs less than a balanced mic + preamp, comes with shock mount, plug 'er in and let 'er rip. Although you could just plug this right into your HDSLR, I am running it into a Zoom H1. Easy to run and pretty brainless in terms of getting it going, but sounds much better than the onboard options. I've used a number of cheapie mics over the years, including some homemade ones, and this one has really nice tone and volume for the price-tag. The shock-mount makes a nice addition, but concerns me a little in terms of transport and longevity. The durability of it is yet to be seen, but I've never heard they break easily. ... More

I recently purchased this VideoMic and the Rode micro boom pole to shoot some testimonials. Beyond being lightweight and easy to use, I was loving the 80Hz setting on the mic. My testimonials were shot in a working manufacturing facility, so the hum of automated lathes and water drills would eat any voice recording alive. The 80Hz setting cut down on this background hum and delivered some pretty clear audio. The shoe mount gives you the added option for a camera mounted approach in case you decide to forgo the boom pole. I tend to shoot with a BMCC, so I kept the boom pole and picked up a 1/4 adapter so I could plug right into the camera and skip any syncing later on. Worked perfectly and kept my production moving along. ... More

The is a great mic for capturing audio with an ENG/Documentary set up. I shot a doc last year and was using a Zoom 4hn mounted to the camera shoe of the 5D, feeding into the audio input of the camera while recording to the Zoom as backup. The audio was great but without the shock mount the mic picked up the occasional bump when adjusting the camera or lens. The Rodemic does an excellent job of recording field audio with the added benefits of a shock mount and excellent running time on just one 9v. The form factor of the VideoMic is larger than the Zoom, and has no backup. But I have yet to need the backup of Zoom so I'm just shooting with the Rodemic and getting great results. ... More

I needed a good shotgun mic for use on a variety of video projects as the on board mics for the cameras I use were just not going to cut it. A friend recommended this one and I'm extremely impressed with the sound quality that has been experienced thus far. The sound is clear and powerful. The size allows me to add it to the usual suspects of my gear I cart around without having to worry about space. Keep in mind that using a mic like this outside in a noisy environment will be a problem. While the subject was nice and clear there were a lot of background noise I had to remove later. But outside in a quiet area or inside on set is a perfect place for this mic. Works excellently with my Canon XH-A1 and GL2. ... More

I read all the positive reviews about the Rode VideoMic on B&H's website, so I decided that this microphone would pair very well with my Canon HV40. I couldn't be any happier with the purchase. For the price, you get a very high quality shotgun microphone. This is a directional microphone, which means it only records what is in front of the microphone. Perfect for obtaining high quality audio for interviews, events, or just run and gun shooting. Plugs right into my Canon HV40, and sits perfectly on a flash bracket next to my LED Video Light. I also purchased the Rode EXT. CABLE f/VIDEOMIC - VXLR (10') so I can use a boom pole to get the microphone closer to the actor/actress/talent. ... More

This microphone works great and has significantly improved the sound quality of my videos. Because of its directional nature, it has also cut down on extraneous sounds. Price is right, hooks up nicely to My Canon DSLR. I shoot instructional videos in which I am cameraman and on-screen talent. I wish the power on light was also on the front because I have shot clips and forgotten to turn the mic on. I guess I can't blame the product for my forgetfulness. First of all: BUY THIS WITH THE BOOM PACKAGE (and windbuster if you need one) It's a fantastic deal. Second; This mic is amazing. So much better quality than a cheap ATR i've owned in the past. Works great for booming, the operator can bump into a wall and you'll barely hear anything because of the suspension. I'm an amateur, so my budget was virtually non-existant. This thing is the best value you can get for a low budget.
