I found this mike to be helpful in increasing audio quality for my Canon EOS SLR. I shoot video of construction projects and professional events and I needed an inexpensive mike to improve audio quality when using my SLR. This mike make a significant improvement to the omni-directional audio of my SLR. I did notice, there was still a noticeable buzzing or hum the mike recorded (easy to remove in post processing). If shooting with an SLR make sure to be careful with a wide angle lens and a deadcat as any focal length below 20mm will show the mike and deadcat at the top of the screen. Overall I am happy with the audio improvement for shooting with my SLR but this mike does need some post processing to get clean audio (especially when recording voices). Audacity (Free) or Audition (adobe) both handle post processing well. ... More

Purchased these for DSLR Use with the 5DmkII and 7D. Very impressed with the quality of the audio obtained as well as the long battery life. We run 10 hour days with the mic turned on the entire time and our rechargeable 9V works no problem.Audio is way better than on camera mic in that it doesn't pick up any IS noise from the motor on the lenses nor does it grab anything when you are fiddling with the camera.Only issue would be the plastic make, but what more can you expect from such a cheaply priced mic. Rode probably puts $148 of the $ dollars into the Mic and the other two bucks is for the plastic pieces to house it in. Be prepared for the rubber bands to break and we have heard from others that the plastic shoe mount is easily breakable as well. They just call Rode, and they send out replacement pieces at no charge. We shall see :-) ... More

I shoot with a Canon 7D and record my audio to a Zoom H4n recorder. I plug in the Rode to the Zoom and sync the sound in FCP. The sound from the mic compared to the internal mic is drastic! The rode sounds leaps and bounds better! I know there are better mics out there but this does a great job. Pros: Cheap. Light. Good sound. Easy operation. Perfect for DSLR shooters. General tips for shooters: This is a DSLR mic. It was made for the easy usage of those who shoot video with DSLR's. Turn off refrigerators and any thing that hums. This mic will pic those sounds up especially when pointed in their direction. Cons: I use the rode boom pole and noticed that the shock mount squeaked when moved around. I just lubricated the rubbers and it sounds great now. 2. The hotshoe mount is plastic and probably won't hold up to a lot of crazy action so be careful. You can read all the reviews you want, but this mic is really straight forward and the price is right. You get what you pay and then some. ... More

Great overall affordable shotgun mic. So far I've been using it on a stand near the person talking for video--great audio and in using the high pass filter it really cleans up the noise. I have a preAmp but haven't needed it as the high pass filter does it's job. I attached mic to hot shoe adapter I had for light stand. I'm using this mic with a Lumix GH4 camera for 4K video. Nice to have the added boom pole and wind sock as part of the package.

I have to say it is significantly smaller than what it looks like in the pictures on a Canon 5D2. It compliments my T2i and also my small camcorder really well, not huge and obstructive like I thought it will be. Sound quality is great, never had any problems yet with internal noise, the shock mount works well. People have reported with the squeaking of the rubber shock holders, but i didn't have any problems. Another thing is that the design looks cool, if you care. One thing I have to note is that it is very plasticy, it feels kind of cheaply built, but if pros rely on it all the time I wouldn't worry. If you want a professional level mic that just works perfectly, don't look no further, for $ this is truly a good deal. ... More

If you wanted to stick this on a really cheap consumer camcorder, you WOULD likely get better audio. Not good audio, mind you-- but better. What I can't understand is the people who spend thousands on a Canon 5D Mk II or a 7D to get the fabulous film look in HD video, and then think a cheap plastic mic is the way to record audio. You would be so much better off buying an AT875 or even a Rode NTG1 and an 3.5mm adapter. This mic will collect sound better than the built-in mics on those DSLRs or cheapo camcorders, but it's not even close to worthy for any kind of quality production. It's just small(er), that's all. Anyone who writes that it provides really great sound! and does the best job ever! is a rookie who doesn't know what good audio sounds like. ... More

I knew Rode made some good mic but was a little unsure about this kit. I went ahead and purchased it and by far blew my thoughts away. sound was perfect and I didn't even use the extra wind screen. No background noise at all was heard and we were in a open area with people running, biking, and walking around. The boom pole was lightweight and was easily handled above or below the subjects. I added some Velcro tights to hold the cable in place but it had enough length to plug into my DSLR. If you do any small or medium type of DSLR projects I would definitely recommend this kit. ... I bought this primarily for my recently purchase Canon T2i DSLR. It really is the perfect mic for such a camera. It mounts perfectly in the hot shoe and the built in shock mount completely eliminates any noise if the camera is moving a lot. I've shot several weddings with it mounted on my T2i, lots of moving around, and even when the mic itself jiggles- you don't hear it. I've also used in on a mic stand for sit down interviews and it captures great sound. I can't really think of anything negative other than I wished it was an XLR output, not mini. Though, obviously it is meant for DSLRs which use mini and an adapter can solve the problem otherwise. I can see how some would say it seems cheaply built as the outer casing is a thin plastic but for the price and the performance, it can't be beat. ... More

On a whim I decided to get this kit instead of just the mic. All of the items are of very good quality. The VideoMic is INTENSELY better than the built in mic on my D3200 and MUCH better than the on in my HV20. It isn't QUITE as directional as I'd hoped, but it is very, very good. The boom pole is a great option, and the windbuster is pretty necessary if you're going to be in anything worse than a light breeze. In all: Great.

I am new to videography and audio recording so haven't used many different types of recording equipment but have worked with other videographers who also use the VideoMic for recording, it was based on their experiences and recommendations that I purchased my own. I have used it on my 60D for capturing audio during filming, and have worked with others using one handheld plugged into a Zoom H4N, with very good results. The audio is much cleaner than from the cameras built in mic, and with a good windscreen it can be used outside in breezy conditions (though still problematic in wind). I also like that it is self powered and uses a mini jack, though I realize this means the signal itself won't be as clean as through balanced XLR / phantom power modules. ... More

*** I am not a professional videographer *** Since I decided back in January to start adding video to my repertoire, I figured I should get an external mic to use on my 7D Mark II for wildlife and nature videos. The built-in mic is okay in a pinch, but it simply doesn't deliver the quality of an external mic, or the option of using a boom or stand if desired. I've used it only a couple of times, but it worked really well those two times. The build quality seems good for the price, it's lightweight so as not to add too much extra weight to the camera and lens, and it makes you look like you really know what you're doing. ;-) Overall, I'm happy with it. ... We use this on both a Canon 60D and on a Panasonic AG-HMC150 HD Camcorder (though the video camera needs the VXLR - Mono Mini-Jack to XLR Converter to work). The mic works much better than either of the on-camera microphones, and it is simple to set-up an use. Rode includes a good shock mount, as well as replacement rubber bands to position the mic in the mount. There are a couple of things that I wish were different with the VideoMic. The gain switches are in the battery compartment, behind where the 9V battery is housed, and the switches are very small; difficult to move between the gain settings (-20db, -10db, and 0db). Also, we are continuing to adjust our camera settings to reduce a bit of noticeable sizzle in the mic pickup. I understand that this noise is reduced in the new Rode VideoMic Pro. ... More

I use this mic to make short films for our community connection outreach projects at the police department. Very clean and crisp. I recently used it to film a meeting in a place with a lot of echo, and i was sure the speaker's words were going to be lost and that i would have to spend a while on noise reduction, but no, picked up the speaker, minimal echo, I was very surprised, maybe you can get a better sounding mic, but for hundreds more that's for sure. This mic will make a difference in your films, no matter what you shoot. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that it has a metal liner plate inside the base for boom poles of two sizes to screw in securely. If i was to make one suggestion, it would be to make the mounting shoe out of metal, just to reduce the unlikely POSSIBILITY of it breaking, ... More

I bought this mic thinking I was getting low quality sound with my Azden SMX-10 and heard raves about the Rode. Not having a way to test the Rode, I decided to just purchase one and give it a go. Let me say that I'm in no manner a professional so there might be some things I'm doing wrong in using this or the SMX-10. However, I've followed all instructions I've found on using it. It just doesn't pick up sound much better than the on-board mic on the video camera ( a Panasonic HC-V750 ) I used it to record a keyboard session in conjuction with a Beachtek DXA-2T. The keyboard was plugged directly to a mixer and into the camera and the Rode Videomic was being used as the voice recorder in speaking from about 6-8 ft away. There was so much ambient noise being picked up in an otherwise pretty quiet room and the voice was echo-y and seemed 'far away'. So at the moment, I'm unsatisfied with its performance and wouldn't recommend it to a friend but am optimistic to find I'm using it all wrong. All those youtube people can't be lying. ... More

I purchased this mic for my dslr video shoots to improve the management of sound selection, volume and quality. In an environment where I'm running and gunning and can't setup or don't have the crew or space for booms, this mic will improve the quality of the shoot by still grabbing the audio I need. Installation and use are easy and the mic performs exactly as expected. My only suggestion for improvement would be to add an easily accessible and usable mic gain control on the outside. This mic you have use your on-board mic gain (magic lantern) or limit mic sensitivity with the gain reduction dip switches beneath the battery. Not ideal for run and gun shooting volume control but I found the mic performed very well. I recently used the mic in a protest rally and I believe I got great sound with this mic. ... More

I have put together a very light, portable package with a Vixia HFS-10 at the center and this mic was a great addition. It works very well in situations with ambient noise and I now use it for every shoot that does not call for wireless. I've even mounted it to a boom pole using the extra mounting holes on the shock mount and was able to gather sound closer to source. One Caveat - with the Vixia I had to purchase a hot shoe adapter because Canon put a proprietary mini-shoe on the Vixia.

For the price I consider this to be a great shotgun Microphone. The plastic build quaility could be better but something metal would already add more weight to an already heavy 5D Mark II and some large L glass. I don't mind the plastic but it would be nice to have a slightly better battery comparment. Sound quaility is very good for a microphone that's not balanced. The shock system seems to work well. Internal sounds and camera handling sounds are pretty much gone or greatly reduced. I'm very happy with this microphone, simple to use, great battery life. Would be even nicer if the power led was more apparent so you don't remember to turn it on and off. Perhaps a bright LED or larger LED would do the trick. ... More

Inside battery compartment is even a PAD switch to reduce sensitivity when around very loud sources. Plugged into my handheld digital recorder it showed itself even better than on the camera.
