I've always been a fan of Rode. I've used their mics for years in the industry and they put out amazing audio. I use this on my Sony A7sII for ambient noise in any situation and it works wonderfully. There's little to no static interference which is a huge plus and saves time in post. The best thing about this mic is how small it is! You can shoot your video and the mic doesn't get in your way, unlike those clunky shotgun mics that you pay so much money for. It's lite and serves it's purpose of being an amazing and affordable mic. If you're going back and forth on mics, GET THIS ONE. It truly is next level. ... More

I use this mic on a Sony RX10 m3, primarily for wildlife filmmaking. I would give it 4.5 stars but that is not an option. The audio quality is as good as you can get in this class of microphones. I took off a half star because the side rejection isn't as good as I hoped. Now, if I can just remember to turn the mic on when I'm shooting! I've been using XLR phantom powered mics and keep forgetting LOL. So far, the 0db setting has provided adequate levels but it's nice to know that you have a 20db boost for really quiet environments without relying on the camera's amp. ... More

I needed a Mic to connect to my Canon 70D. It arrived in time for the event and I got decent audio to work with. I was a little nervous because you can't really monitor audio on the 70D but when I listened to the audio later, it was nice and crisp. There was a little room noise but that's to be expected when using onboard camera audio. The shock mount is sturdy and flexible enough to be effective. The audio is usable with a little post processing. I think the price is a little to high but, overall, I'm happy with this purchase so far. ... More

Build Quality is all plastic. It's ok for connecting to a dslr/mirrorless' trashy preamps, but not great for versatility or audio quality. Doesn't need phantom power, just internal battery. Def prefer something like a sennheiser mke 600 for more pro XLR connection / more secure / better build quality / easier to boom.

I'm using this with a GoPro Hero 4 Silver and the GoPro mic adapter. I've been recording short videos, mostly indoors. Sound so far is great and setup was super easy. I have yet to try it outdoors and have only had it for about a month, so giving 4 stars because I cannot speak to outdoor sound quality or longevity.

I really love the sound on this mic. It's great on my Canon M50. The only thing I will say is that you need to remember to turn off the microphone after you turn off your camera. The microphone doesn't shut off automatically after you turn off you camera. That caught me off guard, but either way, it's still a great mic and I will be keeping it. Also, it take a 9V-1 battery. You need that battery to turn it on.

I have been very happy with this mic. I use the pole for interview type videos and the quality of the audio has been as expected. This kit comes with an extender cable but I have added another cable to allow the Audio tech to be further away from the camera. Keep an eye on your levels as it is easy to over amp your audio as it picks up very well. Easily can pick up two people in a conversation with excellent clarity. Battery life is outstanding. And the fact it turns on and off with the camera keeps me from forgetting to turn it off. Very pleased with this purchase. ... More

Packaging insanely difficult. Both my wife and I tried to open the nearly indestructible plastic container the mic was enclosed in. Couldn't get the two halves apart. Tried the usual calm approach to separate at the seam without success. Then tried scissors without luck, finally resorted to knives. The plastic is so hard and tough it was even very difficult to get a sharp knife in. After much stabbing and cutting attempts the two halves finally separated. It was a difficult AND hazardous experience. The mic works fine but it will always be the unpackaging experience that I will remember. Come on, guys. It shouldn't be the hard! ... More

I previously owned the earlier version of the Rode Videomic Pro, and picked up this latest version with the Rycote Lyre shock mount, and am even happier with it now. The original did a fantastic job at capturing directional dialogue, and this new version has an even more reliable shock mount and better overall construction. Worth every penny.

There was choices to be made and this was the clear winner in the price range I was going for. The main drawback is the on switch doesn't time-out, so you have to remember to turn it on and switch it off between projects, or (a. you won't get the recorded audio, which switches off when a cable is detected in the jack (5D MKIII at least, unsure of other camera makes/models) or (b. you'll kill your battery sooner than it should be. Other than that, it's functionality is great and I hope to start vlogging with it soon.

Very good performance and greatly improves the sound capture of videos with my Canon 5D Mk III and my Sony RX 10. Mic is great, nice to have a bag to store everything. I strongly advise placing a bit of silicon spray on the boom pole and work it in to smooth out the opening and closing operation, as it will be a bit tight at first. After that, you will have a very good system-I am happy with this purchase.

This is my second Rode mic. The design is much better than the older version. I had my first one for about 6 years and used it on 30 or more events/weddings a year. It still technically works but the wire connecting the mic to the camera became exposed and the sound would cut in an out. The new mic seems to be built stronger: better shockmount and thicker wire connecting to the camera. However they still haven't fixed the battery door. It's very difficult to change a battery in this mic when you are in a run and gun situation. Luckily batteries last quite a while. ... More

This microphone is wonderful for run and gun shooting. I really like the +20db option on the mic. It helps me get nice clean recordings. The Dead-Cat windshield is quite good at cutting wind noise down to something that can easily be removed in post.

This mic is dual mono, not standard mono or stereo. So the audio is two completely independent signals. This can make things a little tricky if you want to run the mic through a mixer before it goes into the camera (such as using it as a boom mic on a stand) You will need to buy a special adapter for dual mono especially if you want to convert the cable to XRL. Not just any connector/converter/extender will do. This mic is not as "plug-and-play" as I hoped it would be, so I can't recommend it for anything other than a camera mounted mic for mobile shooting. ... More

I needed a shotgun mic that would improve my sound over the camera mic and this does the trick. The mic removed the room echo and gave me a more focused sound. The preamp settings really helped me dial in something better. I'm taking off one star because for the price I expected it to be built a little tougher? The mount is all plastic and one of the switches already fell off. I was able to stick it back on but still...

This mic captures great audio with unnoticeable noise from camera motors. The limit controls cut the background air handling noise in our conference room very well. Easy to use it makes interviews and roving video possible with my NIKON 5500. The only negative I can cite would be that when mounted on my stock accessory shoe I can't utilize the resident flash for stills because it bumps into the mike housing before opening fully. A Rode boom mic is next!

For the price it's got solid sound. The tiny cable to plug in to the camera is eensy and flimsy, wish it were more robust. I like that it runs on battery and doesn't drain my camera batter. Works well for what it is, an on-camera which one should never really use anyway, but we all know we always going to because that's the nature of filming with without a sound person. Still, if you're serious about professional video and audio and are filming for a client, try a higher end mic if this is your only audio source.

Thought Rde would be a quality product, but found it to be a cheap plastic product. Battery compartment cover comes completely off and could easily be lost. It is hard to open and close when the included mike muff is on. Also it was not obvious how far to push the battery into the compartment to get the cover on. I pushed it as far as possible. That lead to a short and a severe overheat. Still holding onto this mike till I get it tried it for what's it's designed for - hopefully I'll me more impressed then.

This thing is powerful! I had to play around with it to get the correct sound but once I got it it has been smooth sailing. I definitely Recomend getting this one above all other ones that cost less of the rode family. Whats good is that it plugs directly into the camera and there is no need for external sound recording. But I do recomend doing both if you can.
