I was very excited to get the VideoMic Pro mic, especially after reading all the great reviews from pros. However, when I got it, I was immediately frustrated by how hard it was to get the battery in that stupid battery cage that Rode engineers really were out to lunch on. In fact, I had to look up a YouTube presentation to see how to install a simple 9 volt battery. The presenter had over 8,000 hits, making me feel good I wasn't the only dummy in the world. Even after I learned how to install the battery, I realized it was going to be a problem, especially if I were on a job and had to quickly exchange batteries. But I took it out on one all day job and the mic worked beautifully. However, that night, getting ready for another video job, I could not get the mic to turn on again. Ouch. I even tried a new battery, but no workee. So today I am returning this potentially great mic. I was going to buy a Sennheiser tube shotgun type mic, but after talking to a B&H knowledgeable salesman, tilted towards another Rode mic, a NTG2, simply because of the differences in factory warrantees, since otherwise they are very similar, equal mics, according to the video sales expert at B&H. Hope this is helpful to the next videographer out there! ... More

I haven't even plugged it in yet and I'm upset. 1) As I gently lifted the mic out of its box one of the tiny black switches on the back fell off - and it just won't stay on. 2) There were no instructions included so, I wondered, how do I insert a battery? Seeing the small screw on the back I figured that was the answer. WRONG! On removing that I discovered all I did was expose the circuitry. And now the rear plate won't fit back properly and is held onto the body with tape! 3) I triple checked the packaging for instructions and eventually resorted to YouTube where a non-Rode video by phonesandmore gave a quick lesson. For 200 bucks is it too much to expect a simple diagram that shows how to insert a battery? Judging by the comments on the YouTube clip I'm not the only who had trouble figuring this out. ... More

It was about time I purchased an external mic to plug into my DSLR. I did a lot of research and settled on the Rode VideoMic Pro. The sound is good and clear with hardly any background noise in normal conditions (no construction or heavy traffic). It's real easy to use, just plug it in and slide the the switch to on. The most difficult part was putting in the 9v. battery. It's really tough to open the compartment and then close it again. The only other issue I had was that it's kind of easy to accidentally move the mic sensitivity switch. While shooting in a low-light area I mistakenly moved the switch to the more sensitive setting when I turned it on and the sound for the next hour of recording was then totally distorted and unusable. I don't even know what the purpose of that setting would be because it sounds so terrible. ... More

So if you're like me and don't have time or patience to sync external audio to your video, look no further. This microphone's +20 dB helps eliminate the noisy built-in pre-amp so you can get clean audio straight into the camera. And the new Rycote Lyre shock mount is way better than the previous shock mount that consisted of elastic bands. Is works like a charm. Also, if you're deciding on whether to get the Windjammer, just buy it with the microphone, because not only will you save some money, but you'll be glad to have it. You need it outdoors when filming in windy situations. Bottom line, if you need a good audio solution and don't have the time for external audio, this is the solution for you. ... More

The Rode VideoMic Pro works for my application--to pick up vocals outdoors up to 50 meters away. It picks up extraneous noise, but there's no comparison to the camera's built-in microphone, the Rode is clearly superior. Some reviewers noted the thin diameter of the cable, and they are right. When I first received the microphone the sound cut on and off. A few e-mails to Rode was all it took to diagnose a broken cable. They sent me a Return Authorization and I sent them the microphone. They repaired it quickly and now the microphone works perfectly. Besides the cable, the only other nit to pick is the awkward battery door. It's easy to open, difficult to close. Hopefully I won't need to change the battery very often. ... More

I have been very happy with this mic. I use the pole for interview type videos and the quality of the audio has been as expected. This kit comes with an extender cable but I have added another cable to allow the Audio tech to be further away from the camera. Keep an eye on your levels as it is easy to over amp your audio as it picks up very well. Easily can pick up two people in a conversation with excellent clarity. Battery life is outstanding. And the fact it turns on and off with the camera keeps me from forgetting to turn it off. Very pleased with this purchase. ... More

My VideoMic pro+ stopped working after 5 uses. I'm not a heavy user and only film during holidays or family events. So much for the 5 year warranty, it's been over a week since I reached out to Rode support, and I have not received a response from Rode. Maybe I got a lemon, which happens, but the fact that they tout a 5 year warranty only to not even answer my e-mails is bad customer service. Not buying Rode again.

Had the older version for 2+ years. Couldn't live without it. This one is even better if that is possible. The mount feels so thought, and I think the sound quality is even a little better. The wind jammer in this kit is much better than the off brand wind jammer I had with my other one. I would highly recommend Rode and this kit!

Though on-camera is typically a terrible place for a mic, the application has its place. If you're shooting on DSLR, Canon Cinema, or even a small camcorder, this is a must-have for nats recording, and for clear scratch audio to sync with dual-system audio. Rycote's lyre design is one of the best isolation mounts available. R?DE's mic design offers a gain boost for use with weaker in-camera preamps, helping to minimize the noise floor. The mic itself has a good sound quality. While it isn't flat or uncolored, it's well above average and provides quality, usable nats for b-roll. I keep this mic atop my EOS-80D at all times. ... More

I bought this mic to upgrade my old Video Mic and I have been very pleased. While it is not a professional xlr microphone, it still holds its own when it comes to audio quality. When used properly it produces fantastic sound. It mounts easily and simply to your camera or rig, and it is not obtrusive. I would recommend this mic to beginners and professionals alike, because it is that good. It has become a part of my standard kit, and I love the results that I can get from it. Pros: +20 dB is a huge blessing and greatly improves the sound quality over the old version. The shock mount is much improved over the old model. Cons: NA ... More

As with most Rode microphones, the VideoMic Pro has excellent sound quality. The dB boost is great to be able to turn down the camera sound level to cut out noise. The Rycote shockmount is highly recommended over the standart rubberband mount for durability. The one complaint i have is that Rode needs to get away from the expensive 9V battery, go to AA or AAA. Even though the battery life is excellent, no one likes 9Vs...

I bought this particular setup on the recommendation of a friend. I use it to record while filming wildlife and nature. My main requirements where it had to be directional and it had to eliminate wind noise. It is fairly good at being directional but it still picks up noise behind the camera. Also had mixed results with the wind; it is still an issue on windy days; 15 mph +. Maybe a different wind sock would be better.

I ordered this mic to help with more directional sound and it did not work out of the box. I own 2 stereo mics from Rode and are awesome, so this should have been a perfect choice. We have put those microphones through the gauntlet of punishment and Rode stands behind there products. I can say Rode is taking care of the issue and I know I will get a working one, but I needed this mic extremely bad and rushed the shipping for it to be defective. It would not pic up any sounds. I know if it was not for the defectiveness it would be 5 stars. ... More

I use this mic on a Sony RX10 m3, primarily for wildlife filmmaking. I would give it 4.5 stars but that is not an option. The audio quality is as good as you can get in this class of microphones. I took off a half star because the side rejection isn't as good as I hoped. Now, if I can just remember to turn the mic on when I'm shooting! I've been using XLR phantom powered mics and keep forgetting LOL. So far, the 0db setting has provided adequate levels but it's nice to know that you have a 20db boost for really quiet environments without relying on the camera's amp. ... More

Had an outdoor event in a fairly quiet park, shooting video from about 10 feet away. Had set the audio on the neutral setting and found it to be way to quiet (could hardly hear any sound at all). Turned up the setting to higher setting and it definitely grabbed the voices of the subjects in the video, but also really grabbed the sounds from over two hundred feet away. I am a complete novice at the video thing so operator error was not out of the question. A little pricey but got the job done.

I've always been a fan of Rode. I've used their mics for years in the industry and they put out amazing audio. I use this on my Sony A7sII for ambient noise in any situation and it works wonderfully. There's little to no static interference which is a huge plus and saves time in post. The best thing about this mic is how small it is! You can shoot your video and the mic doesn't get in your way, unlike those clunky shotgun mics that you pay so much money for. It's lite and serves it's purpose of being an amazing and affordable mic. If you're going back and forth on mics, GET THIS ONE. It truly is next level. ... More

I make short films and often use an interview setup with the mic boomed from a stand. I have to admit, this microphone is a worthy investment and does not disappoint. It is directional and is just a pleasure to use with the Zoom H1. The switches are intuitive and the design is clean. The shockmount is quite good. Some operator noise can be heard if the boom pole is moved vigorously, but I doubt that will happen often if at all during field recording. This mic, coupled with the extension cable and the Zoom H1 are a very solid beginner's starter kit. If purchased during a sale, the whole set can be purchased in under $$. ... More

I was a little nervous because you can't really monitor audio on the 70D but when I listened to the audio later, it was nice and crisp. There was a little room noise but that's to be expected when using onboard camera audio. The shock mount is sturdy and flexible enough to be effective. The audio is usable with a little post processing. I think the price is a little to high but, overall, I'm happy with this purchase so far. ... More

I was using an original Rode video mic, but was getting zoom motor noise in my audio, and the rubber band suspension was a large part of the lack of isolation, especially in the cold where I do most of my paying work. I bought this one as a replacement, and the suspension is worlds better, and the isolation is at least 20-30 dB better than the original. I love the different padding and gain that's switchable on the fly. My only gripe is with the battery door - it doesn't give you a solid indication that it's closed and latched. The dead cat wind screen is pretty good but doesn't eliminate all the wind noise. ... More

If you want to upgrade from your camera's built-in mic, this Rode mic is a good option. It's lightweight, small, very easy to use (plug into camera, turn on, shoot video). I find it very practical for general daily use - holiday/birthday parties, road trips, interview-style videos. It seems high-priced, but I rationalized it as a one-time purchase for solving most of my audio problems (which it has).
