I was blown away with the quality of this microphone. I have used stock Sony shotgun mics in the past on my cams and bought the NTG-2 for use on my Sony AXU2000. The audio is crisp and clear and I actually felt that it was almost too clear whereas I had to manually adjust my levels to get rid of unwanted background noise that my older mics could not pick up in the past. The mic screams quality and professionalism with its design and construction.

This product is a simple shotgun condenser mic, plug in to an XLR input can use battery or phantom power. It has a high pass filter switch, and comes with a plain black foam wind screen. All of these simple things make are easy to use and apply. The power lies in the performance which is amazing! Now There are claims that there are better mics for roughly $1000! But for less you can get a great sound from this mic. I would recommend getting a pre-amp to further improve sound quality to that of the expensive mics out there.

I'm using the NTG-2 as an external mic on my Sony CX550. I'm forced to do my recordings in a less than ideal environment so the onboard mic sounds very hollow. With the NTG-2 hooked directly to the camera, I can use the sound track from the camera instead of making a seperate recording with another mic. With the mic placed anywhere inside two feet the recordings are very pure. If you think a shotgun mic will pick up distant sounds at high levels, you'll be disappointed. The NTG-2 does a good job of isolating the target source outside of 2 feet, but it does picks up some ambient sound. The bottom line is that it does exactly what I want it to do. ... More

I already had one of these mics and have been very happy with it, so when it came up on sale with NAB pricing, I just had to NAB another one. Great, easy to use, and versatile. It will take device phantom power or use a battery, which makes it usable with any recording device. I used it the first time for audio production on a short film that included foley, dialogue, environment SFX and each time it has provided beautiful clean sound. Rolloff switch for noisy rooms is also a big plus and it has just the right amount of directional focus to be forgiving where needed but precise enough to isolate a source. ... More

Amazing headphone in a great price range. I am not as familiar with sound technicalities but this is definitely a big step up from the Rode Videomic Pro in terms of build quality and audio quality. It is not as convenient to setup to the camera that so it's really meant to be used in more professional situations. My run and gun solution is to plug it into an iRig Pre directly into my Panasonic GH3 using a audio splitter. Search up irig pre xlr hack and look at the dslrnood link. It saved me from having to buy a $ juiced link or a recorder. So this microphone is not as easy to use as the DSLR specific microphone like the Rode VMP so I use it for more professional situations. ... I got this product to make some short films for use with a Canon T3i. This is the first microphone I've used beyond the mic in my camera. The sound quality is much much better than the onboard mic. A word of caution though, while this mic is great it is pretty underpowered using only the AA battery to power it. I would highly suggest getting a phantom power supply otherwise you will have considerable amount of background noise/hiss with your audio. I went ahead and bout a Tascom DR-40 to use with this and it works out great.

I recently purchased the RODE NGT-2 shotgun mic for voice overs. I have a number of mics and I love to check out and buy new ones. After reading about people using shotguns for VO I decided to join the band wagon. The Senn 416 of course came up, but so did the price so I thought this would be a nice way to try this style. My new NGT-2 arrived quickly from B and H and I plugged it right into my current interface and computer. It sounded good, a little strong at first and muddy at a close distance. With some adjustment to my distance and EQ settings it sounds great. It cuts room noise a little, not as much as I had anticipated. ... More

I've used this mic on a few short film projects this far. It does not have the versatility of other more expensive mics, but it has improved the overall quality of the audio on our projects - without a doubt! Its well build, seems to be very durable though we treat it very well. In doors its spectacular. Outdoors, you need to make sure and purchase something to help with the wind noise, the included wind screen really doesn't help at all. If you don't have the budget to purchase a mic in the $1000 range, this is a great option and will improve your sound recording over the in-camera mic or hand held devices. ... More

This is a great microphone for capturing excellent sound in a crowded interview situations and a great second sound source in set piece interview as a back up to Lavalier Mics. It works with my Azden Mixer and Tascam Dr-680 recorder as well as giving a nice clean sound directly into the Sony HXR NX5 Camera ... so lots of flexibility without compromising on the end result. I bought this over the NTG-1 simply because of the battery power capability which allows the mic to be used with wireless plug in transmitters (ie Sony UTX-P1). I live in Australia and buy Rode from B&H ... a great Aussie product from an amazing retailer! ... More

This is an amazing mic for what you pay. I was undecided on whether to wait and get an ME66/K6 for an extra few hundred dollars, or to just buy this one now, and I am now very happy I made the decision to stick with this one. I compared my NTG-2 last week to a friends ME66/K6, and I actually like mine more. It's $200 cheeper and has a much nicer, round, full sound as opposed to the hotter, tinnier sound of the ME66/K6. If you're looking for a good mic in this price range, this thing is what you want. ... More

For the price, it's a fantastic bit of gear however I found that the sound was overall a little flat. I'm obviously comparing this to a NTG-3 which is by far a superiour product and definitely worth the extra cash if you're using it for corporate or professional gigs. Also when using the NTG-2 with a Zoom H4n the sound has a hiss. A good fix has been the Triton audio fethead which is about 85 euros (AU$115) including postage to Australia.Apart from that, the NTG-2 is still worth the money and is great for controlled environments.

I purchased this mike package to work with my Canon HV-30 but the supplied shockmount is too big for the Hot-shoe. Other than that..the sound quality is great.

Used it with Sony HDR FX-1 whose main drawback is the sound and the lack of xlr phantom power input. With NTG-2 my Sony leaps from prosumer to pro. Also looks good, especially with a windshields like dead cat or WS6

I use this w/ a Canon hV20 and juicedlink preamp. I really like the sound out this mic if, like any mic, you get it close to the talent. A combo of setting the Juiced link preamp trim and the on-board camera sound levels makes for a noise-free, intimate sound quality. I'm not a sound tech nerd, but I, like most anyone, can tell if sound quality is unprofessional. And it isn't coming from this mic. Pricey? Yes. But I don't know what mics are worth a cheaper price tag and this price is comparable to other brand mics.

There are cheaper and more expensive options but for me the middle ground has proven to be perfect. Rode has a good reputation and this mic hasn't disappointed. This was a big committment for someone just moving into video, and after several weeks of use I'm convinced this mic was the perfect investment. I'm also delighted with B&H service. After I ordered I realized there was a special offer that combined this mic with PluralEyes and they made a quick adjustment and got me the extras asap. Incredibly happy on all fronts! ... More

This is my favorite microphone that I own. I use it as a boom microphone and also do voice overs with it. I recommend a shock mount system such as the Rode Blimp. Another nice feature is the option for a battery because it allows me to use it with my consumer camcorder without the need of purchasing of an adapter. The microphone also has the advantage of adding practically no noise. What ever I hear on the set, will be what the audiences hear. This microphone is top notch quality and does have its place near the top.

You literally get a professional sound indoors and outdoors at a fraction of the price most people spend on other name brand mics. I have never had any problems with this mic.

5 stars when considering price/quality. The fact that it can run on phantom power or with a battery is also a useful feature. The drawback is that the battery compartment augments the overall length, but it's worth it when considering the versatility: use on camera with phantom power or with a AA battery on a DSLR or with a portable recorder. I replaced a shotgun that came with an AVCHD camera, and the NTG-2 brought a noticeable better sound quality, doing a better job at canceling off-axis sounds and noises.

I use a Panasonic AG-HMC40. I had previously been using a rode SVM, and a Rode Videomic with the mini input. When my camera had to be replaced I got the XLR kit with the new one, and went with this mic, running phantom power. Wow. Man, I wish I had done this from the beginning. The sound is so much cleaner than running with the mini jack, and this is with the camera set up on a tripod, talent 3-4 foot away. Even with the noise removal plugin ( sony vegas ) to get rid of the central air noise, the sound is still great. ... More
