I have used this mic for 3+ years. I am glad I got it. It has done a great job for my company in a myriad of production environments. However, I am wanting something better. Once you realize what a GREAT shotgun mic can sound like, you will want to upgrade. The biggest thing is that we always have to boost the gain. Always. It records oddly low, and that can lead to a bunch of post issues. If you can do it, save up for the NTG-3, the NTG-2 mic's better upgrade. THAT literally is the best shotgun mic out there, in my opinion, save for about 1 or 2 mic's that are 5x the price like a Schoep, and possibly a Sennheiser or two. But seriously, if you are considering the NTG-2, take a very hard look at spending the little bit of extra dough on the NTG-3. Remember - sound is half the picture! ... More

The Rode NTG2 is a quality shotgun mic at an entry-level price. It captures sound evenly, clearly, and beautifully, check out some demo videos on YouTube to hear it in action. It's very low-noise, be aware though that compared to the NTG3, the incoming level is significantly lower. I haven't had any issues because of this, and the signal-noise ratio is the same (no additional noise, just lower overall level), it just means about a gain boost of about 25% on my Zoom h4N. For super fine applications, you'll want something that you pay a little more for anyway. In terms of everything else, the battery power lasts ages, it's light and easy to hold when on a boom pole, and honestly, it makes an acoustic guitar SING if you put it about 6-8 feet back in a quiet room. Incredible. Well worth it! ... More

My audio-groupie friends always told me to invest in a big, long, expensive shotgun mic, but I figured I could save some cash and try the NTG-2 out. I checked Youtube for demos and went for it, and I was not disappointed. Sure, you're going to get a superior microphone if you spend $1000 more, but isn't that true for everything? The real question is, Is this good enough for interviews, on-location sound, etc? It is.It's very lightweight and fits the dead cat I ordered with it perfectly, and it even offers Phantom Power. I am very pleased - it is affordable and effective. My only complaint is the included microphone stand mount does not fit the actual microphone! I am planning to just keep it in case I need it and pick up another one at * or something for $5. Still...an annoyance. It still gets 5 Stars, but I'd make it 4.5 if I could for this reason. ... More

This is a good quality, short shotgun microphone that works on phantom power or a battery (meaning that it is an electret condenser capable of running of less than 48v). It is very sensitive and clean. My only critique is that it doesn't have an ON/OFF switch. The advantage of this is that you never have to worry whether or not it is on, but the disadvantage is that it constantly drains the battery if one is installed. If it is mounted on a boom pole, you have to pull the battery to switch it off, or else let it drain. You can't conserve battery power by quickly switching it off between takes as you can on many Audio Technica mics. Other than this, it is a great mic. Good for close mic'ing with a boom, or mounting on a camera. ... More

We purchased this mic as our FIRST shotgun mic for a small start up HDSLR Video production company. We Run this into a Zoom H4N most times, sometimes into the camera directly, but as you probably know, you want to get these mics in close. PROS:Great Size, great build, doesn't feel cheap. Lightweight. Runs through both Phantom or Battery without additional parts. Good amount of 'direction', doesn't really pick up background or anyhting behind it at all. Fully legit, came with all the parts in an official RODE box, this is not a rebox or knock offCONS:When powering through phantom +48v through the Zoom H4N a strange hissing sound occurs, using a battery as the main power fixed this. Did not try the Highpass switch on the mic yet. This mic was purchased as part of a kit so we got all the bells and whistles. ... More

Something to note right here. If you purchase this, you're going to need an XLR cable. The NTG cannot fit directly into the DR-40. Somebody might get that impression. If you can find a great deal for this (Cyber Monday, Black Friday), you will love it even more. All that said, it's a pretty standard package. The zip-up carrying pouch is great. Unfortunately, can't slip the DR-40 into it, but that's to be expected. The microphone has beautiful audio capture, and the recorder can make magic happen. I have yet to use it for anything but noodling around but I'm already completely sold on it. Worth the price. Pick these up yourself and get the best audio for this price. ... More

I purchased Rode NTG 2 recently. I tested it with my camcorder to record the audio (indoor). The sound is clear and natural. It rejects noise at the side fairly well. At outdoor recording with windy condition, the sound is just as good and clear (except I need to minimise the wind noise). Overall this audio device does the job I want and its performance is great considering its cost. The only downside I have there is no on-off switch for battery. So you will not know when the battery dies off. It is a little hassle to remove the battery each time you are not using unless you are on phantom power. Otherwise this is a great product for budget conscious videographer. ... More

I use the Rode NTG-2 mounted on my camera or on a mic stand to gather actors voices, and location sound. I like the directionality of the NTG-2. The sound is very warm even at 40 ft. The only concern I have is that the supplied windscreen isn't enough for even small gusts of wind. I would recommend the Rode Dead Cat for the NTG-2. Also to turn on the microphone you have to unscrew the battery casing and then insert the battery and screw the casing back on so it takes 20-30 sec to turn On.

I purchased this microphone to along with my new Canon 7d and so far I have been very pleased with the results. It feels nicely built and comes with a pretty decent windscreen. I only have two gripes with the microphone so far. The first problem is that it doesn't have an on/off switch, so if you leave a battery in the mic it will still be draining the battery when you're not using it. The second problem I have with the mic is that there is no way to control the gain on the microphone. The 7d doesn't appear to have gain control either (maybe it does?), so it would have been really nice to have control over the gain on the mic itself. But the sound quality is still miles ahead of the built in mic and overall I'm very happy with the Rhode NTG-2. ... More

i needed a uni-directional shotgun mic for my second camera very badly, as although we tap sound from the board with senheiser wireless transmitter to main camera, i required a dependable quality of sound in my second camera. Keeping in mind my tight budget and also suggestion from the B&H sales personnel, i bought RODE mic.when i received it, it was more than my expectation about quality. its reasonably priced. the best thing i like abt this mic is shock absorber in ring. since then i have used this mic for 4 wedding events and i am very satisfied with the quality it offers. any pro videographer should not feel hesitant to buy this RODE brand products. they are built sturdy & strong.I am using it with battery powered. i didnot have any need to use it phantom powered since the gain is very good of its own. ... I use this microphone for many things; mostly broadcasting for a small news agency and film production. However I also produce and record music on the side. This microphone has never disappointed me. It is fantastic in all recording. It is very versitile in this kit as it can be used with a boom pole. Stop your consideration and order this one. You won't regret it. One thing to remember though is that if you film with a DSLR then you will need a pre-amp such as the juicedlink box. Without one, filming on a DSLR with this mic will yield a thin and wimpy sound. If you use a camcorder you should be fine without one, although it never hurts to have one handy. ... More

I've got two NTG-2 mics now. We've mounted them on our XF-100 and XA-20. We've put them on the Rode boom pole. We've even used them for voiceover work, mounting them on a stand and having a speaker face them at an oblique angle in our portable sound booth. One AA battery provides the power you need. I've yet to use the low pass filter. The foam windscreen cuts down on typical room noise, but we use a zeppelin in the field and on breezy days the deadbeat over the zeppelin. This mic is easy to use. Reliable. And it's all metal construction feels solid. It's been dropped while in the pouch a couple times, yet it keeps working. I'd definitely recommend this mic to a friend. ... More

This mic really didn't meet my expectations after reading all the great reviews. Although it is very well constructed and seems like it can take a beating, I feel like the mic really doesn't go too far beyond my onboard mic for my Sony HDR-FX1 in terms of sound quality. Now this COULD be because I'm running it straight into my camera and not using XLR to a Zoom H4n or something. I'm going to try doing that next and hopefully I will get better results. Also one thing I hate is that there is no ON/OFF switch. I knew of this going into the purchase and I thought it wouldn't be a big deal, but after using it I really wish it had one. Overall it's a decent mic. I guess it's well worth the$ price point. Part of me wishes I had saved a little more money and got a nicer Sennhieser or something. ... More

Be aware of this mic's problem with bass clipping if you are planning to use this in loud environment... wedding, concert, and any other crowded events. It will start to become a problem even if you put it next to a tv with 80% volume. the bass clipping will destroy the whole audio track and making your works sounds like a joke that some middle school kids recorded.

This microphone does a wonderful job rejecting off axis noise and greatly reduces unwanted ambient noise. I used this and shot near a waterfall. When the mic was not pointed directly at the waterfall, all of the noise was gone while still picking up crystal clear audio. I have not used this mic off phantom power yet and have only been using the AA battery, but still have been getting good quality audio. I have mounted it on my JVC HDGZ7 with a shockmount, and it does stay out of shot, but it does make the camera a little unwieldy and awkward looking, but that is to be expected with such a compact camera. This mic has wonderful rich deep tones and has good range. I would definitely recommend this microphone for this price range. ... More

It can also run on consumer cameras with a simple mini jack to Xlr cable. I am running off of my simple canon hf20 and it sound grate its a thousand time better then my on board cam mic. But u will need a light mount for the canon hf 20 because of it wired little shoe and a shotgun mount to put it on a camera or boom pole but it does come with a small mic holder that could be put on a boom. The Rode NTG-2 is a quiet mic (which is important), good at minimizing the noise in the room if it is pointed away from it, and has the ability to use battery power in the field. Another thing I like about rode is the wow factor. Customers don't always know about microphone specs. but they do know what your equipment should look like from DVD extras, and rode delivers. My only concern is the NTG-2 sensitivity, but you would expect to pay for microphones with all the bells and whisles. I compared my NTG-2 last week to a friends ME66/K6, and I actually like mine more. It's $200 cheeper and has a much nicer, round, full sound as opposed to the hotter, tinnier sound of the ME66/K6.
