I use this mic with my Rebel T2i HDSLR when capturing audio. The sound quality is okay but not for an professional application. I haven't used the audio at all due to the mic picking up a lot of noise and producing white noise. The only thing this mic is good for is as a refrence mic. I capture my audio using a Zoom H4n with a XLR Audio Technica shotgun mic attached. The sound is beautiful, clear crisp and NO NOISE. When I edit my work in Final Cut I use Pluraleyes to sync up the video from the t2i/SMX10 with the audio from from the Zoom H4n/Audio technica Shotgun mic. Works like a charm everytime. I haven't tried the mic with the Zoom h4n to see if I get better results. ... More

The build quality is good for the price. Metal body. It attaches easily to my Sony A7 camera and the sound quality if pretty good. I reduced the recording level and that eliminated the slight hiss at higher levels. The one slight negative there is no automatic off and its easy to forget to turn it off manually. There is also no light or other visual reminder that its on. Overall good value for money.

I've only pulled the SMX-10 out of the bag one time. I was on a shoot where I couldn't control noisey traffic. The lav was picking up more ambient sound than I would have liked. I didn't have a boom but I was working in close so I just popped the mic on the camera. The SMX-10 did a better job of excluding traffic noise than the lav did. Unfortunately the sound was a little too brite for what we already had and I wanted to be able to maintain consistency so I moved the lav in closer and stuck with it. But so far, I'm impressed considering the price. ... More

Have noticed that the battery is not needed when mic used with the Panasonic hdc-sd900 camcorder or even the Nikon d5100 as it appears the mic is powered by the camera. The on off switch makes no difference and you can only tell the difference when you unplug the mic. Anyone agree? or am I mistaken. Graham

I use the SMX-10 with my Canon Vixia HV30 for interviews. Without an external mic, there is just too much unwanted noise and not enough focus on my interview subject. The SMX-10 is a very affordable solution which meets all of my needs-light weight, clear sound, unobtrusive and easy to use. There is no battery level indicator, but that is a minor concern weighed against price.

This is a great value for recording audio on a digital SLR. The stereo effect works quite well and the sound quality is many times better than the onboard mic. It picks up some camera noise, but nothing too noticeable. I like how it takes a standard AAA battery -- there are other mics in this price range that take watch batteries. This mic is a good size for SLRs, much smaller than the Rode VideoMic. I recommend getting the angled mini adapter since the plug sticks out a bit, which could break over time. Overall, great mic for the money. ... More

This is my first mic for the video world. Before I would use the on board mic which honestly was not a problem since I did mostly bike movies where I overlayed a sound track. Now with my DSLR I wanted to use the video mode more often but surprised by the amount of noise from every possible. After I switched to this mic the sound was removed, but I now had to battle wind noise. I used the foam included which did stop the majority of sound but looks like I would need to buy a dead cat cover soon. Overall, for the price it's a great improvement to the on-board mic. ... More

Use this with my Canon T2i. Do not get this mic if you have a T2i and are not using MAGIC LANTERN third party firmware. There is a horrible, loud hiss when used without this firmware since the sound is automatic on the camera. When used with the firmware however, the mic is phenomenal. Great range, good, clear sound. The only bad thing is that it has no light on the mic to signify if it is on or not, which is a pretty big deal, but I make due.

SMX-10 ended up being one of the few stereo mics we could find and seems like the best choice. I've been mounting it on my camcorder and it sounds far cleaner and louder than the onboard mic. The camera's motor causes some background noise, but that's to be expected, and won't matter if I can attach the mic on a boom pole during film production. The only drawback is that the mic seemingly lacks any other modes of attachment aside from the shoe mount. I'll have to find a way around this.

I use the mic on my DSLR, the low cut filter works very well. I wish the cord was just a straight wire and not coiled.

I had this mic for about two weeks and had a chance to test it with my Canon 7D camera and what can I say, it's amazing. It's definitely better than built-in mic, it gives you stereo signal and pick up range much better. I looked at some comparable alternatives such as Rode VideoMic (mono) and for the price I like Azden better. Only one comment I have that it doesn't have a light that would show whether battery is full. Otherwise it's a great item!

The microphone definitely improves the sound quality of my Canon Vixia HF S20. It's easy to mount on an extention arm and attach between the camera and the tripod. It will not, however, fit the mount on top of the camera. A longer cord to use for interviewing would be nice, but not necessary.

Provides better directionality than built-in camera mike. Sound dampening mounting isolates mike from camera noises(and some operator caused noises). Uses AAA battery or can use camera plug-in power (e.g. Panasonic TM700). Compact size less likely to obstruct the lens line of sight.

We purchased this microphone for use on cameras used by high school students in the library. It is durable and fits the cameras beautifully with the bracket(sold separately). We are really happy with the sound quality it provides - it reall amps up the sound of the video camera alone. Good value for the price.

Pretty high quality for an affordable stereo mic. Focuses sound very clearly even in heavy traffic or if you're right behind a fountain. Of course it wont filter out surrounding noises but it focuses the audio from your subject very clearly. General ambient sound quality is also top notch! Some may claim an XLR is better but really, the quality from this mike is very good!

Use for recording live bands indoors and outdoors. Haven't actually tried it outdoors yet. But indoors (up close and 30 ft away both work great). There is no power on light or low battery indicator on it. So you must remember to turn it on manually and do a quick check before you start filming with a camcorder. Works great with the Kodak Zi8 camcorder. Can't beat it for the price.

Hoped to use this microphone for an externally mounted shotgun on a video camera. Turns out it's very small and light, complete with a nice shock mount and coiled cable. BUT, it's very noisy, when integrated with the Panasonic AG-HMC40 video camera with both on-camera and external AG-MYA30G XLR adapter , it sounds as if there's an air conditioner running constantly in the background. It might be useful for outdoor ENG activities, but for spot miking in quiet ambience environments it's not acceptable unless you like a lot of background hiss.

I use this on a Canon D60, largely to capture reference sound. It's doing the job just fine. Like others have said, one must remember to turn it off to avoid battery drain, but how's that any different than any other mic in this class? As a low cost mic it's great for the work I do--run & gun in hostile backcountry environments--so it's low price is a bonus too. If you damage it, you're not out that much.

Unfortunately, the SMX-10 stereo mic doesn't pick up sounds as quiet as one would imagine. It IS stereo, which is nice, but has a lot of white noise behind what is being recorded. I'm not sure of a remedy, but I most likely will simply stick with my old microphone for now.

I'm very happy with this microphone. The difference in sound quality over the on-board camcorder mic is impressive. I'll have to agree with some of the other reviews that the mic doesn't seem to pick up sound at any greater distance, however, the background noise is much reduced. Audio is more clear and crisp. The only fault I have for it is it's lack of an indicator light that shows the unit is functional. There's no way to tell if the battery has enough charge, so you need to be careful. Other than that, I'm very satisfied.
