I bought these with the impression that they'd be the best set of closed back headphones at this price point. I was wrong. The sound signature to these is V Shaped, but more present mids than the standard M50's. The bass is muffled, and the very high frequencies are quite sibilant. I find the placement of the drivers too close to my skull, even physicalling hurting my ears after long durations of wearing. It would probably be better with a larger set of ear cup. All problems aside, I really like the portability, packaging, the 3 detachable cords, and the carrying pouch. ... More

These phones reveal audio that I didn't think my ears could sense. Audio-wise, they are fantastic. After over an hour in 80 degrees, my ears still didn't sweat somehow. Despite the flexibility, they feel real solid. There is not enough padding for the head though. Since they are heavy, they weigh on the top of the head and hurts after just a few minutes. I hope Audio-Technica adds more padding here or offers additional padding for those whose own hair isn't soft or thick enough.

I've never spent this much money on headphones before. I was setting up a new recording studio and I wanted monitoring headphones in my budget. These were almost unanimously recommended, and it makes total sense. They sound fantastic. I don't know enough to give more details, but that's all I can say. I edit voice over work, and this is beyond sufficient for what I'm doing. I even replaced the ear pads, which altered the sound slightly (because of the different foam insert size) and they still sound excellent. Would highly recommend.

The ATH-M50x are lot of money to drop, but they have excellent crossover between recreational/professional use. If you're going to commit to these dudes, get the 50x model as opposed to the 50; it's a little bit more for the major convenience of switching out the detachable cables. I use them for taking sound and post production on films. They're also perfect for tuning out the crazy guys on the Subway and protecting your ears from frostbite. Or sunburn. They're great. Buy them!!!!

first of all, this is not a noise cancellation headphone. If you are looking for NC, go to Bose. However let's face this, under$, you could get a headphone quality is way better than beats or the main stream brands in the market, you better know where you put your money. Think about all the commercial those overrated headphone has, all those super star will cost money, and you will the one to pay for it. Have you seen any major commercial for this headphone? and why they are still popular among professional users, it's all common sense now.

I use these for practicing drums and guitar by mixing in recorded music. The flat eq is great for molding the sound as you wish. Also there is clear definition of all instruments in the recording. These have got to be the best thing going for under $ and even match the sound of $ plus phones, just don't have the features such as Bluetooth and noise cancelling.

Use these for professional radio recording/monitoring. I've been using them nearly a year now, and simply put they are just the BEST. Balanced sound, never too much treble/bass, fairly noise isolating...excellent all around. Of course with new age tech, I wish these had the option of going bluetooth, but that's why they are so affordable for the quality. I've used these AND the Sony MDR 7506's, both work great but I really enjoy the build quality of these. They don't feel flimsy at all, like they will continue to be durable for years to come. Comfortable, even after hours of consistent use. Can't say enough. Don't think about it, get them.

These are not for the casual music fan. Not trying to sound like a snob here. These are for critical listening and monitoring. As a drummer these really help me hear the Hi Hat patterns and be able break down what is being played and as a Drummer that plays Electronic Drums these are even more important as I really can tune my kit exactly as it should be and get the sound right either for playing live or recording, without exaggerated bass or other settings they use ion headphones for general consumers. These are really great Monitors, and for very reasonable price. If you are an Edrummer too, I highly recommend these. EDrums are expensive don't skimp on your monitors. ... More

I had it on excellent authority that these would be fantastic headphones. I can only assume that the pair I received were defective because they sounded so strange and we're a drastic outlier from all other monitoring devices in my studio. I created an EQ curve to try to make the average of my other devices sound like the M50'x and it required a huge spike at about 2k and big scoop at around 200. They also weren't very comfortable as there's little to no padding on the upper arch. So I was sorely disappointed after having high expectations. So again, I'm going with the assumption that the pair I received were defective. ... More

I bought these to use for in-the-box recording and they are a great choice so far. Wired connection for low latency, and the fact that they come with three cords including a three-foot straight cord is also nice. The sound is very balanced and clear, living up to their reputation. Comfort is good, but not amazing, a notch below my Bose QC35 II and Sennheiser 550x pairs, which I can and often do wear all day while working. I need to take the ATH-M50x's off every hour or two, as I notice the weight and pinch on the ears (I wear glasses). Still, they are comfortable enough and overall a great value. ... More

PLEASE NOTE I HAVE NOT USED THESE HEADPHONES LONG AND PLAN TO UPDATE THIS AT A LATER POINT. After a few hours of listening, I can say without a doubt that these are the best headphones I own currently. Their over the ear design along with the superb seal around your ears make most noises (Like walking on hardwood flooring & Typing) almost inaudible. They are comfortable and offer a great range of sound. I come from a novice DJ background and up until now the only way to match the quality that these headphones give was to pump up my Behringes B215D's (Each at 550 Watts) and let the music flow. Now, I don't have to wake my neighbors up just to listen to music with the highest clarity possible. ... More

These headphones are everything you would want and more. They provide great versatility and portability because they come with removable audio cables of varying lengths. The sound quality is exceptional for this price range. Note though that these are headphones that are meant for professional studio use so their bass is limited. They're also extremely comfortable. The ear pads are very cushiony and offer a snug fit. I wear them almost 8-10 hours a day at work without any annoyance. I definitely recommend them to anyone looking to spend a modest amount of money for excellent sound. They're definitely worth it! ... More

I have a pair of Sennheiser Momentums, which sound great, but I find rather uncomfortable for prolonged use due to the small size of the cans (my ears are average size). I found that the ATH-M50x sound was very similar to the Momentum's, but even a little bit better for my taste with a deeper bass, and much more comfortable to wear. The Audio Technica materials are not as good as in the Sennheisers, which use metal and leather on the headband, and real leather on the earpads, instead of plastic and fake leather (pleather) on the ATHs, but nevertheless the build quality is fine and the cans feel robust. ... So Ive had this pair of M50x now for about a week and I am loving everything about them. The sound is amazing and glad I finally was able to buy them after searching through for a pair and this one stood out the most from the rest. They feel great and comfy for me when I wear them even for long time gaming. I know for some this headset might not feel too great but for me they are great. Love how they look and feel very well made. I like how the headphones have a lock on feature that way they cant accidentally get unplugged if you pull the cord. ... More

I use these headphones through a small amplifier to listen to my television set. Their sound is superb and the various plugin wires allows me to use them for other aural uses. They are constructed very solidly, yet the are very comfortable. I bought leather ear pieces, too, but I haven't used them yet (if I ever do).

I use these when practicing on my Roland TD-15k drumset. Been drumming for 10+ years. My first pair in white lasted for about 5 years before I lost them in a move. Great value and quality for the price. Cheaper headphones just don't cut it for me when monitoring electric drums (or any live audio). You won't be disappointed. Yes the material on the headband starts to wear after a while but it doesn't change the sound so not a deal breaker at all. Also great for monitoring vocals and acoustic guitar.

Since I couldn't try them on before buying them, I was a bit worried because some people said they didn't fit well. I have a big head and they fit great. Probably all the small heads complaining. The sound is incredible and you will hear things in songs that you never heard on subpar headphones. I have the Bose Noise Canelling headphones, which are great, but I mostly use those for the airplane. These I use these for video editing and for listening to music.I got them on sale as well, for $ bucks off on B&H, so even better.

I use it for both keyboard piano practice and connected to my TV amplifier to watch movie, so the others in the family not to be disturbed. Sound quality is exceedingly clear and give off the dimensional effect. Even it is not surround sound like my speaker set that connected to the amplifier but it is close enough. Only thing I wish it had is the volume adjustment on the head set. I get by with the remote control of my amplifier.

after reading reviews and choosing a few models, I went to the store yesterday and tried some out. The reviews are right; these are great and comfortable headphones. Even though the matte gray weren't on display, I shelled out a few extra bucks for them. Really nice and great sound. I'm glad for all the reviews and recommendations.
