Great Camera - Poor Service From Sony/Precision

Nov 30, 2015

As a professional documentary, corporate, portrait, industrial/manufacturing and sports photographer for nearly a decade, I depend on my camera equipment as a tool to make images for my clients. When my equipment needs adjusting or repairs, I depend on the manufacturer to stand behind their products and give good customer service. I've been a Canon user since my first digital camera and Canon has always stood behind their product, giving good cus... Show More

Amazing filmmaking tool

Jul 8, 2014

As a filmmaker's camera, it's amazing. This is more of a review for anyone using the camera for it's video capabilities. Let me explain the things I like and don't like.First off, LCD screen is awesome, colors are very accurate and I like that it comes out a bit and tilts up and down. Sucks that it doesn't flip out to the side for those overkill quality selfies but that's ok. Buttons are very responsive and feel good, you can change settings real... Show More

An impressive camera!

Jul 8, 2014

I ordered this camera because the GH4 has been on backorder for about a month and I must say, this camera is a beast! I use it almost exclusively for video. Nothing in a controlled environment, so the low light performance is useful to me. First off, this camera is not noise free at 80,000 ISO. It can be if there is enough light but under low light where 80,000 ISO would expose the image correctly, there will be a good amount of noise. This will ... Show More

THIS IS NOW MY A-CAM!

Jul 7, 2014

I received my Sony a7S from B&H photo this morning at 10am. As I was unboxing it I was surprised to find that it came with two batteries and a wall charger. Kudos to Sony. I own the FS100 and so I was expecting to use the a7S as a B-cam, but after testing it I may start using it as an A-Cam.Form factor:Size wise it's small and light even with the Canon 24-70mm f/4L and Metabones EF to E-mount adapter on it. Size was one of the main reasons I've b... Show More

Finally a body for my Leica glass

Nov 11, 2014

Though I'm not a professional shooter, I have been snapping away for 50 years. I had a long love affair with Nikon that ended 9 years ago when I discovered Leica. I moved back to film and proceeded to develop and scan my BW film. I was in heaven. Then my dedicated film scanner (KonicaMinolta 5400 II) died and I replaced it with an Epson 700. It was okay but not the same quality. And I missed the flexibility of digital as well as the post processin... Show More

Best camera Ive used- Worst service I've ever experienced.

Mar 31, 2016

Im a video guy and I love using DSLR and Mirrorless cams when i travel so I don't get excess attention when filming, I also shoot corporate/ interview. and events. I tend to shoot at night/ dark environments and have come from the world of Canon cameras. The features and quality of image and color make canon seem like they havent done anything new in 10 years (spoiler: they really havent). What everyone says about the sensitivity in the dark is t... Great highlight detail, dynamic range

Jul 4, 2014

++ Each of the three Sony a7 models is a purpose-built camera. The a7S has outstanding dynamic range that is preserved to a fairly high ISO, and permits, distinctly better than other cameras - detail preservation in specular highlights - shadow brightness lifted without too much noise - Sony's dynamic range enhancement, in the current software version, is very natural-looking and functional, truly allowing us to expose as we were taught. - (expos... Petite, but Powerful!

Jul 15, 2014

I wish I could give this a 4.5 star rating, because nearly everything about this camera is great, with a couple of small setbacks. First of all, the good: 1. As you probably know, the low-light performance of this thing is outstanding! I would not hesitate to use the camera at ISO 10k, and even up through ISO 30k, the image is clean. It starts to get noisy around 52k, though it is still certainly useable. I've used the 5DMIII, C300, and FS700, an... Show More

a7S as a body for Voitlander lenses

Aug 19, 2014

Ever since the dawn of digital photography, my Bessa film SLR and a suite of excellent voitlander lenses have been languishing. When I saw the a7S, not much more than the size of a Leica, I thought the camera would be an excellent for these lenses. I had read about the amazing low light capabilities of this camera, allowing for constant use of speed of 1/250th of a second for almost all shots, without engendering noise or diminishing sharpness, t... So far, so good

Aug 12, 2014

Received this today and immediately put it to action. First impressions, small. It goes without saying and if you just read the specs, but this camera is size of a big point and shoot (remember those?). Smaller than the 5D MIII, almost TOO small. I got the Sony battery grip which helps, but with an adapter (metabones speed booster) and lens on it, it becomes very front heavy. I'll be looking for a cage or bracket that fits with the battery grip f... Show More

Magic in a mini box

Mar 20, 2015

How in the hell does this little, fits in the palm of my hand, camera do what it does? No bigger than an early 2000's point and shoot, the A7S boggles the mind when it comes to size vs capability. Full frame sensor in something that is as thick (if not a bit thinner) than two decks of cards stacked together? That's some voodoo right there!Ok but seriously : $, tiny form factor, and competes with my Blackmagic Cameras / impresses me as much as whe... Show More

Why you should/shouldn't buy it.

Jul 9, 2014

First off let me start by saying that I love this camera for photo and video. Sony gives you 2 batteries, a USB cable, and external wall charger, and a cable support attachment. All very welcome additions. You can see some samples I shot on my youtube channel, www.youtube.com/MeanGrain Here's what you should consider if thinking about buying one: Resolution/Photo-I do not crop photos, so 12MP is great for me. If you plan to crop or print like 36 ... Show More

Great all purpose camera for stills.

Sep 29, 2014

I love photography in low light settings. I have tried several cameras with expensive fast lenses trying to get the shot in low light situations and struggled with missed shots because the lens is searching during auto focus or the subject is moving. I chose the Zeiss 24-70mm lens with a maximum aperture of 4, for my initial lens. Combined with this camera, I am able to capture a lot of shots in low lit areas and tight spaces. Fantastic Camera - Specific Use!

Sep 9, 2014

I shot with Nikon for over 6 years so trading in one of my DSLRs for this setup was a very big step. My choice to swap was to be able to shoot urban photography much more discreetly and for that purpose, this was an excellent choice! The great things are a small physical form-factor. while still providing full-frame output. The low-light ISO performance is unbelievable. Some have called out the 12 MP as an issue but for me, I can honestly count on... Show More

First Pro Level Mirrorless Camera

Jul 18, 2014

OK, first I use this camera for people, weddings, and stuff like this and don't do video. I routinely used the Small Raw feature on my 5D3 for this so a 12mp file size is perfect. It took some huevos and vision for Sony to do this but, for it's intended use, 12mp is perfect. Criticizing this camera for such low resolution is like bagging on a great two-iron because it can't drive a golf ball 300 yards. But what really excites me is that, with the... Show More

a7S and a7R Not for action photograpy

Aug 20, 2014

I professionally shoot high school, club, and collegiate sports. I own the Sony a99 and a7. I love the size, WiFi capability, and everything about the A7. However, on both of my above body's, the 24MP sensor is too noisy above ISO 3200. When I shoot sports, especially indoor sports, such as swimming and diving, I often want to use an ISO of 3200+ to achieve the highest possible shutter speed and lowest noise for a given aperture. When I read about... Incredible Low Light Machine

Apr 2, 2015

I purchased this mainly to use with my collection of Leica lenses, specifically indoors. For that purpose, I could not be more please with this camera. It excels in low light situations...not only producing shape, clear images with negligible noise at high ISOs, but also with exceptional dynamic range. You can pull shadows out of the dark and get good quality texture and contrast. Operating the camera is a piece of cake. I had no prior experience... Show More

The testes are very good. Everything you would expect from this camera. Our specific tests we're focused on lens fall-off and sensor reaction. The DR was also very surprising, great tonal rendition in the shadows. For this camera the biggest challenge is the infrastructure (for lack of more familiar terms THE RIG). It is important for professional camera crews to use this camera (or any camera) in a traditional fashion, the CINOFLEX, gave the SON... Show More

I am a 30+ year video professional. Like many others I jumped on the DSLR bandwagon due to the small size and filmic looks from full frame sensors. I have extensive use with Canon MkII, MkIII, 6D and 60D. While I loved much of the footage I shot with the Canon systems, I always wanted more dynamic range, a better codec and professional video features. Overall, I'd say Sony put some amazing things in this small, attractive camera body but really missed the mark on the details in very frustrating ways. I also use it for still images on social media and production stills, a very important part of my business. I shot a show for National Geographic that needed lots of low light scenes w... Show More

There are a lot of things to like about this camera. It does video beautifully, and the S-LOG 2 flat profile is quite useful. The first time I took a picture in complete darkness, I was amazed at how well it picks up even tiny amounts of light -- even compared to the 5D3. I found the EVF to be quite fast in comparison to others, and the technology is definitely getting better -- although it's still not perfect. For low-light situations and video,... Show More

The A7S is brilliant. Fairly light weight. The usability is OK. The viewfinder is quite good but I wish it was off set to the far left side like on the NEX 7. If you're doing low level shots, the giant view finder blocks the center top part of the screen. The flippy-uppy screen is decent. The battery life is average at best (which is why it comes with 2) Video wise - I can confidently shoot at 80,000 iso with just grain. The image quality and det... Show More
