Like an old sports car that delivers

Jul 22, 2014

If you ever had the chance to ozzoz down into the bucket seats of a classic 60s sports car you know the feeling you get from the mirror less Sony digital cameras. The speed is there and the quality is as good as any of the top brandsin fact because it is full frame it has an edge over many in its category. To over-ride any of the auto features is a breeze. So far so excited

Nov 26, 2014

I just purchased the sony A7s as a video production and photography camera. I can tell you already from only spending about 48 hrs with it and just toggling through the menus and the settings that this is a very powerful and compact camera. As far as video goes it has tons of great abilities including lowlight, 60fps @ 1080p, zebras, focus peaking, evf and more. Things that aren't so great about it are the size can actually be too small and cumbe... Show More

Great Camera with a few exceptions.

Dec 5, 2015

I love this camera, the low light is phenomenal and the picture quality is great as well, but there are a few negatives. - Lens support, there are no f/2.8 FE zoom lens' and you need a $$ adaptor to use canon, which doesn't work very well.- Confusing menu layout, some functions don't work in different modes. For example in Manual mode you can do a custom WB by taking a picture, it is great, but not in movie mode....- Color science, this camera is... Show More

SONY A7s Videographer's review

Nov 21, 2014

i've been using two of these cameras for 2 months in professional situations. I shoot photos, but am primarily a videographer--run and gun and studio situations.one camera works awesome--a dream come true. the other one had problems out of the box. Focus magnifier goes crazy all the time, HDMI firmware was all funky--would only put out a few frame rates under only a few conditions. also the sensor that switches between monitor and view finder cou... a revolutionary breakthrough for photographers AND film makers. I got this sweet little camera when it came out and have been shooting for a month now, and I am floored at how much I like it. Being a canon guy, I never thought the day would come when I would want to jump ship, but this camera is INSANE. The quality rivals probably every canon camera and for sure rivals the fs700. I can't believe the color, sharpness and how fun it is to shoot. AN... Show More

I decided to try and give a full Sony lineup a shot. I got rid of my mark 2 and canon lenses and switched to the a7s and Sony lenses. I came to hate the Sony lenses so I got the metabones mark 4 smart adapter and bought canon lenses again and the results couldn't be better!I haven't had an issue filming with the adapter. It's only when I try and use a flash for photo that the adapter stops working correctly. But I just take it off and put it on a... Show More

a jewel of a camera, but Sony Service fails

Aug 27, 2015

Well, meanwhile, you all know the pros and cons of this little gem. But what you maybe don t know is that there s a massive fail on some units (a lot of them actually, might want to test your own camera) when shooting video at high ISO. On some users it appears already at 12800, on some at over 100k. There is a nasty, high visible and annoying purple flare in the left upper and lower corner, making the footage unusable. Problem is that Sony Servi... Show More

The best, although far from easiest, video camera for low profile documentary work I have ever used. There are only three real problems with the camera: 1. The rolling shutter is really hard to deal with. You can try shooting APSC/crop sensor even with full frame lens to minimize, but if Sony can figure out how to put a global shutter in this camera it will be a killer. 2. The SLOG2 profile, which is irresistible, takes an eternity to color corre... Show More

Love it! Great Video! Easy to Use.

Jul 15, 2014

I had a Blackmagic Cinema Camera but as I do a lot of run and gun I bought the a7S and am very happy about that. The autofocus, autoexporsure and overall autos make it very easy to shoot video run and gun. I love the ability to shoot anywhere with the low light capabilities. Overall I am very happy with this over my cinema camera. One thing I liked more on the CC is that it was obviously a video only camera. It had specific controls for that wher... Show More

Best small form video camera

Jul 14, 2014

I am working on a caving documentary, and the A7s is the best small form stills video camera I have ever used. It actually exposes locations slightly brighter than my eyes can see. Its small and light weight for travel. It has customizable buttons avoiding menus while shooting, a robust video codec at 50 Mbps, Slog2 for dynamic range, audio in and out, zebras, peaking, and a view finder that works while shooting video. The camera gets 5 stars but... Show More

I have used this camera as a second camera to cut with my F5 and F3. and with the S-log profile, it really matches well. The mirrorless design E mount is one of the most versatile mounts out there, and opens up a lot of great lensing possibilities.I really like how Sony basically make an F3 into the Nex7 with this camera. Own both a7 and A7s. Bought the a7s because A7 was not very good Using ISO above 1600 in lowlight conditions. Both are exactly about the same and produce excellent photos with natural lighting on non moving subjects. The focusing is slow and even worse using adapters and non sony lens. But with manual focus together with focus assist when using canon or Nikon lenses, produces very sharp photos. Pros : Fantastic low light and high ISO Great video ... Show More

the A7s is Outstanding

Jul 8, 2014

I have compared this unit as a camera to my Leica m9 and the colour rendition plus dynamic range is excellent. Combine this with the ISO capability and this has quickly become my go to camera. The 55m and 35 mm Sony and leica lens work like a charm. Hopefully Sony will work towards building a sensor with the same ISO capabilities at 24 MP. Another note, the audio of the Video is very nice much better than any camera I have owned with an internal ... Show More

Best all purpose a7

Sep 30, 2014

I use this camera mainly for street photography and especially at night. It has insane iso capabilities (as you've all heard I'm sure). I have mine set to auto iso usually with a max of 51200. Pics are still very useable at this range although you will see a little bit of noise... but we're talking about useable at 51200 here- that's pretty incredible. The beauty of having a vast iso range like this particularly for my uses, is that even when the... Show More

Great camera for video

Dec 10, 2014

This is a great camera for narrative work. It is incredibly versatile with its ability to switch between full frame and super35 sensor readout, E-mount can be adapted to pretty much everything, and the dynamic range is second only to an Alexa or Amira. It makes a great B cam for bigger budgeted projects and an amazing A cam for lower budgets. The rolling shutter is a bit more prevalent than I expected, but its easy to shoot around. The batteries are not the longest lifed, so I would recommend buying extras or an external battery. If you are going to shoot S-Log2 outside, high NDs are needed.

Worth every penny

Aug 7, 2014

I can only echo what everyone else has already commented about. It's a great camera overall. I think the ergonomics are very comfortable overall. I traded in my canon t2i which ended up saving me about $ on the A7s. I use this primarily for video. No need to buy the expensive Metabones adapter ( have one for my FS100). I just purchases a $ adapter on @ which powers the lens and control most of the functions including EXIF data. I would have gone with the GH4, but Micro Four Thirds is a deal killer for me. Battery life is horrible when shooting video. Less and an hour.

Best DSLR for video that I've used.

Aug 8, 2014

I've been using the canon 5D's (Mark 2 and 3) for the past 4 years and recently switched to the a7s. I'm blown away by the video capabilities of this camera. The dynamic range is superb, low light is better than anything I've ever seen, the internal compression is great (XAVC), being able to shoot both full frame and aps-c in 1080 make all of my lenses more versatile, and frame rates up to 120fps makes this a killer camera. The only downside is the rolling shutter in full frame mode, but if you have IS lenses or shoot on a tripod it's a non-issue.

All Hail the ISO king

Oct 8, 2014

Got this camera a week ago at B & H and had a couple of quick tests, it took my breath away, such crisp clear image up to almost 20.000 ISO and I can dare to say more, the noise isnt as bad as you might think. This is a camera made mostl y for video purposes obviously because at pictures the MK III from canon blows it away, the S-log 2 is so awesome, too bad you need to be at 3200 ISO in order to use it but nothing a good ND filter cant fix! Battery life is a meh, you need at least a couple of them but hey, it's not so bad just turn off wifi.

Average autofocus and bad shutter button

Jan 3, 2015

I own this camera since three months, I use for portrait, landscapes, low-light photography. Sometimes animal photography. Images in low light and portrait are extraordinary (55mm/1.8 Zeiss). The slow and sometimes unprecise autofocus in low light is the weekest point of this camera and make it not so suitable for fast moving animal photography. The shutter button is much too unprecise and the dials on the top of the camera feel plastic and cheap. Overall, I have great fun with this impressive camera and would recommend it for selected use.

Aug 11, 2014

So far, this camera is amazing! I don't have many full frame lens options so I've also used this with my e-mount crop sensor lenses. It seems to do a decent job with those lenses as well. For video the main disappointment is that when you are using the camera with the 120fps option it crops the image down(to crop sensor mode), as well as only doing it in 720. For photos it is definitely a little bit of a challenge working with just 12mp. But you can't beat the low light sensitivity so I'm still stoked on what I have!

Very Impressed

Jul 16, 2014

I got the a7s as a replacement for my fs100. I'm very impressed in the low light ability. I am using it with an ef-emount metabones adapter. all my canon glass works great with the full frame sensor. The ability to punch in to aps-c mode is great when you need that extra range. Along with the GH4, the a7s is becoming a dual A cam setup. I'm able to interchange them based on each strength. Only 4 star because of battery life, no internal 4K and lack of native lens options. other than that, great camera!

Wonderful surprise in a small package

Oct 5, 2014

I was trully impressed with low noise and exceptional low night capability of this camera. I compare this with my Nikon D800e and even Hasselblad H4D 50MS. The picture quality is on par with the big boys providing one use a quality lens. I bought the Voigtlander 50mm F1.1 and to try out on this and it picture quality in wide open is very close to my Nikon 50mm f1.4 (or I would say a little sharper). Comparing with the Hasselblad 100mm f2 is still a bit lag of overall corner sharpness but is close.
