I use this for better recording than the on camera mic. I mostly do video work and use studio recorded tracks in post. BUT the audio quality of this mic is solid, certainly magnitudes better than an on cam mic. For the price and size this mic certainly delivers. It's easy to hook-up and even comes with a dead cat cover to help reduce wind sounds. This could be great for budgeted buyers. Are there better mics available? Yes especially depending on your needs. But for a small on camera shotgun this mic doesn't disappoint.

For $60 you get a great microphone. Works great with any camera or smartphone (SC7 cable required). I use this with my Samsung Galaxy S5 phone, and it produces great audio. You won't go wrong with getting this mic for your recording setup.

I was pleasantly surprised how well this works. Yea, it's not the high-end of some other unites, but wow, for the cost and the resulting audio captured... this works REALLY well for us when mounted on our smartphone gimbal or stabilizer. It's only been used a couple of times to date, but what we captured with this is really rather amazing. Audio levels were a bit low, but a quick adjustment in Premier... and we end up with clips captured on our smartphone that are far better than just using the on-phone mic. Well worth it.

The audio hisses. This is the third one of these on-camera 3.5mm microphones I have tried, and none of them have a strong enough signal for my Nikon D800 or for a Canon 5DmkIII without introducing an unacceptable noise floor (hiss). I actually get better audio by using my on-camera microphone. I have heard that the Rode VideoMic Pro will give you an acceptable level if you switch its output switch to +20, but I have not tried one of those models yet.

so. i bought this to go with my new panasonic G7 to take on my first overseas trip. I wanted to take lots of 4k video and have good audio to go with it. I love the mic's compact size and the included fury wind shield is a huge plus! I didn't notice any excessive battery drain while using it, which is great. The rycote lyre suspension that is supposed to be unbreakable was indeed quite breakable. mine broke while on my trip, which was quite an inconvenience. Rode is replacing my rycote lyre suspension, but i have to pay to ship the broken one back. ... More

Works really well with DJI osmo, sound quality is great in the right conditions, but the audio does sometimes sound a bit funky off axis when recording into the iPhone 6S. It might be something to do with the iPhone and not the mic. Very durable mic and mount, the windhover works wonderfully. Pickup from arm-length is outstanding, the further you go from there the sound starts to fade dramatically. That is the nature of microphones though, they should be placed close to the subject.

Most of the Time I shoot with the video mic Pro, but I ordered this mic for a bikepacking trip so i wouldn't have to carry batteries. I have been absolutely blown away by the performance of this microphone. I will say I shoot on a sony so it is very good internal pre- amps so if you shoot Canon or Nikon I would stick with the Video Mic Pro or something that is powered so you can turn the internal pre amps down.

Just beautiful, really. This is an inexpensive mic that seriously makes a difference to the audio game on your camera. It gains wayyy more sound than the built-mic on my camera. I hate how it picks up background noises too. Also, I can't get the windshield to attach tightly, I just leave it there hanging pretty much always. Overall, great mic, great sound, gorgeous price and would recommend this to a friend.

I have young children and use my Nikon D750 DSLR camera for still photos and video of them. The mic on the D750 is very week when it comes to outdoor shooting. I like the VideoMicro because it is compact and it slips right into the hotshot on my DSLR. I all I had to do is plug it in to the camera. This was perfect to fill the needs of filming kids soccer games and trips to the beach. For the price and the improvements it made in my family video sound quality it works perfectly.

For the price point, the RODE VideoMicro is a solid on-camera mic for capturing clear, quality audio whether for a scratch track or use in your video. It also is of the highest quality in construction - solidly built. But, what makes this such a solid piece of gear is that it has such sound quality that it can double as a small boom mic when paired with RODE's extension cable... so, you Beginner Filmmakers... save yourself some money and invest in this versatile microphone! HIGHLY Recommend!!!

Connecting cord is spotty right out of the box. . . unless Im using headphones to monitor I have no way of telling if Im using the Rode or the internal mic on my DSLR. When its connected, it does work. The ambient noise was significantly reduced. Not sure how well the wind cutter works as Ive only used this in my living room with various appliances running elsewhere in the house. This also works on my iPhone 8; Couldnt tell the difference between this and the internal mic, but again, maybe its the cord? Since I cant monitor the iPhone like a DSLR, I have no way of knowing. Get me a consistent cord/connection and Ill be happy to revise this review. ... More

This microphone really makes my job easy it works out to about 8 feet and it's very compact so I'm always ready to go with my camera I use it on a Panasonic g6 for videos to go on my website and the internet for documentary work of journeys that I take . Before this I had to set up a bunch of equipment to get the sound that I wanted but with this and the g6 its good enough for 80% of my audio for my videos if my final product was to make DVD's or for TV I definitely would use the zoom H6 and a different microphone but this guy really proves to be exactly what I needed in most cases. ... I also use the Rode Video Mic and a Sony shotgun mic for video, and the VideoMicro is by far my favorite so far. I plan to travel a lot this year and this will be a great addition to my video kit. It is small, does not require a battery, and picks up great audio. I have not tested it off camera on a boom pole yet, but I look forward to the results!

I use this on my Sony a7s when I just need scratch audio. It is so compact and light and has great audio quality. The sound quality is way better than the internal camera mic. I would even consider using this as an overhead boom in a pinch. I also bought a 25ft extension cable just in case that need came up.

Finally got around to testing this Mic. After adjustments to Mic sensitivity on my D7100, this worked great. I was narrating a panaromic video so I had the Mic facing backwards. Not extremely high winds, maybe 5mph. I have not used it indoors without the muffler but I expect it will perform as it did outdoors. The muffler is a bit of a challenge but still worth it.

Several on the net said it gathers sound as well of better than Videomic Pro. Not so. Biggest features to love are no need for phantom power, and build. I have forgotten to turn on power to my Videomic Pro and thought with this I'll never miss audio again. Sticking with Videomic Pro for sound quality and additional settings. Micro goes to son-in-law for his birthday.

For the price I should probably give this a 5. It records really well and is superior to the mic on the Sony zv-1 I'm using it on in situations shotguns are designed for. Really impressed with it for the price point as I was hesitant in buying it, thinking it's too cheap. Only beef really is the isolation mount. It's just a tad flimsy so is a bit hard to keep in place. Indoors is no problem but outdoors can be a bit touchy. Minor point if using indoors for sure. For the price only a minor irritation. Overall still really impressed with it. ... More

I attached this to my Canon RP and it does a really good job with audio outdoors under less than ideal conditions. I was shooting by a very windy lake with traffic noise close by. The wind muff did it's job on the wind and the mic design minimized the background traffic noise as well. Extra lightweight with no built in battery. Economical, too.

I use this to record audio to be used as a temp voice over in my edit suite. Have a line in through a Mackie Onyx Artist 1-2 and can record directly onto an Adobe Premiere Timeline, with the help of a separately purchased XLR cable. Wanted this mic in case I want to use it on a DSLR for hobby video use as well. Works great for what I do and has some added flexibility to get more use out of it. Would purchase again.

While not perfect, it does exactly what I thought it would accomplish. I'll be using an iPhone for the most part due to the portability and flexibility so I was on the fence about this or the smart phone version... But decided to use the hot shoe version since new smart phones seems to be doing away with the headphone jack. But in order to do this, you have to also purchase the Rode cable that converts 4 contact to 3 contact cable. I also 3D printed a bracket that would attach to a 3 axis gimbal that mimic a hot shoe for mounting. ... More
