I shoot video occasionally for personal use or small paid gigs. I have experience borrowing external Zooms and shotgun mics, which are amazing tools. But I don't shoot video often enough to invest in those things. I just used this mic for an interview-style video and it worked great! No batteries to worry about (and ending up with zero audio), no syncing audio and video files in post (saving me literally hours), and it's small and lightweight so I can take it on outdoor adventures easily. My only complaint is that after shooting in a variety of locations inside and out, there is a noticeable feedback/hum sound in the background in all of the clips. This is easily dulled down with a Denoise effect in Premiere. ... More

The VideoMicro has been an excellent addition to my micro recording rig. I use it as an audio input to my Galaxy Note 4 mounted on a Beastgrip smartphone rig. The audio quality has been really good for use as an interview mic and selfie recordings. The deadmouse windbreaker works as advertised. I do a lot of man on the street interviews for my internet television network and this makes work so much easier. The only con I could mention (if it is a con) is that there is no headphone monitor plug, but I've found a work around with a splitter that seems to work fine. Overall this is a great product. Thanks to Rode and B&H Photo/Video. ... More

I now take this little Rode microphone in my Canon t4i bag. It takes up very little space. If I have the need to do a little video, then I get it out and attach it in about 1 minute. It works great. The wind screen (dead cat) works well. There is wind most of the time where I shoot. But that is not a problem with this mike. It is fairly directional, although not as directional as a NTG-3. So you will pick up some surrounding sounds such as a plane overhead or a car horn. But the mike is also very sensitive in the pointed direction. I found the sound to be of a high quality and the pick up great. I use this mike for those informal, quick, and spur of the moment videos. It fills that niche really well. At this price point of about $60, then it is no brainer to take along in your bag if your camera shoots videos. ... More

At first I plugged the mic into my juicedlink then into my zoom h4n. Was really not happy with the noise floor hiss I was getting. I thought the mic is just cheap and was considering returning it. Then I bypassed all the audio interfaces and plugged it in directly into my GH4 and the sound was great. -6db on the GH4 seemed the optimal setting and works great. I like the light weight form factor of this mic and the audio is great for my b-roll footage. Even talking head is fine with this simple setup. $ for mic, suspension hot shoe plus dead cat for dealing with wind noise is a great deal. Taking it to Sundance with me this coming week. ... More

The latest offering from RODE, this mic is surprisingly good. Having experienced their previous iteration, the RODE VideoMic GO, I was skeptical at first that this mic would perform any better. After using it for some interviews, the quality of this mic was leagues better than the GO. The pickup of the mic is much clearer, and the hiss is dramatically reduced. It's no shotgun mic, but it can catch vocals nicely from 1-4 feet away (mind that you adjusted your levels accordingly). It's amazing how they engineered the performance of this mic into such a tiny package. Granted, if you already use a professional mic or field recorder, this won't replace those; however, if you want to travel light or minimize the amount of equipment to carry, this fits the bill. ... This mic is the perfect solution for my specific needs. I needed a high quality shotgun mic to capture soundbites from folks at events. The mic needed to be small and light enough to not throw off the balance of a 3-axis handheld gimbal, but be high quality enough to not have to necessitate lugging around an external recorder. The fact that it runs off of camera power, making it lighter than other mics, and ensures it is always on for those forgetful few who neglect to flip the power switch from time to time, makes it all the better. The price point is unbeatable. ... More

I was looking for an inexpensive microphone that could help me make better videos and after looking through several different ranging from $20 to about $40 I decided to give a bit more but trust that brand. What convinced me were mostly the reviews from people who had compared it to different cheap or mid-priced microphones. Without being an authority on video making and editing as well as microphones I am sharing my satisfaction here. This microphone clearly catches voices at as much as several meters distance and in environments like beaches with ocean behind speaker or just noisy place with others speaking around. I haven't tested it so that I can compare different angles or settings but as a user I can say it was worth buying it. :) ... More

This is a tiny, mighty microphone. I have no complaints about the microphone. Something to watch out for is the cold shoe mount; it's pretty flimsy plastic. I work at a library and we check out camera kits to patrons, and the cold shoe came back broken with the first user. Granted, I'm not sure exactly how they used it. They certainly over-tightened it; they may have been moving the camera quite a bit. It's hard to be sure. But now I'm in a place of looking for a compact replacement, and it's a hassle. So just be gentle!

The DJI Osmo microphone is horrible so I wanted to find a microphone that could give me decent audio. After a quick search on YouTube, many recommended this Rode microphone. Ordered the product on here and it was shipped to my house a few days later. I also ordered a 3D printed attachment for the Osmo so this mic could fit just below where you hold your phone. All in all, the audio quality improved ten fold. Although you can still hear the buzzing of the Osmo's fan you can almost mute it out completely in post production. I highly recommend this mic. ... I was debating buying the rode video mic pro due to the need for the battery. I had rented it twice before and both times forgot to turn off the device and recorded video without a sound track due to the powerless mic. It gets great sound but the battery necessity was a problem. Rode releasing this camera powered version was great and perfectly fit my workflow. It gets great sound out of my gh4 with the gain dialed back to -6 to -12. It's clear and greatly isolates the audio to what the mic is pointing at. If you can't afford a higher end shotgun mic, and the alternative is on board DSLR mics, this needs to be on your camera. ... More

I like the all metal construction of this mic, the short red cord, and the included wind screen. I also like the audio it produces. Although it's not a replacement for a shotgun mic, it can capture ambient audio just fine in run and gun situations. I actually bought this mic to sit on top of my a7s ll while mounted on a gimbal, but even though this mic is super-light, it tips the balance just enough to make it unusable in that situation. I'm noting this not as a complaint about the mic, but just to let others know who are considering a similar rig. ... More

Debated giving this thing 3 stars. Compared to anything in its class and cost range, it's excellent. It's fine for outdoor or run and gun use (which is what it's meant for), and sounds decent (and light years ahead) of other mics in its bracket. However, that being said, I would not use this for anything in a controlled environment. You can't really boost the gain on it, and DSLR preamps are notoriously noisy. I was running this thing on 5 gain (I forgot how much the camera goes up to, 40?) in a club, and when it was quiet I could still hear the dirty preamps. I wish the gain could be boosted, even if it required an optional battery, but it still sounds much better than anything else it competes with, with usually sounds like gutter trash. At least this sounds bearable. ... More

Keep it in your bag for any occasion. I've used the Rode VideoMic, VideoMic Pro, StereoMic and even the NTG2. They all serve their purpose but for ease of use, this Micro is such a no brainer. No, you're not getting studio sound, but your not getting onboard mic which sounds horrid. It won't have the long reach like a shotgun mic. It's a fine in between that makes sense. I've used it with my Panasonic G7, which suits perfectly and also as scratch audio for Ronin / Gimbal use. You'll get good sound for convenience and compact size. Vloggers will love this. ... More

I used this mic to record a moderately loud room-sound musical performance--a single performer, electric guitar, amplified vocal. I used it on a Nikon D7000; tried all mic level settings: auto; medium, low. Even on the low setting the audio over-modulated and thus distorted. I gave three stars because in all fairness I don't think that there is a great way to mic music audio using the camera alone. (It probably takes a separate audio recorder to get great sound.) The mic is more sensitive than the on-board mic of the camera, and that's why it didn't work well for my use, but for other uses the higher sensitivity might be what's needed. ... More

I really liked this compact mic. Rode is a solid company. First use, it sounded great and worked perfectly for a on set walk and talk. Only issue is when I tried to use it a second time, after traveling with it, I was getting all kinds of noise and was unable to use it. So apparently it's very fragile and even though I packed it back in it's box of travel it might have been banged around and so now I have to test it and find out what's wrong and potentially return it or ask for a refund. I've heard great things about Rode products, and so I figured I'd pick up this mic. The quality of the sound right out of the mic is alright (definitely useable), however, with some basic audio editing, the microphone really excels. Think of it as shooting log on a camera. Without editing, it doesn't look great, but with a little work in post, it really shines. The included shock mount and dead-cat work extremely well, and the build quality is phenomenal. All in all, this is a great microphone for anyone starting out, or pros who are just looking for a backup, especially considering the cost! ... More

I own several small mics for my DSLRs and my BLACKMAGIC cameras the Rode Video Micro is the only mic I am confident I will get clean audio from. Buy this Mic you WILL NOT be disappointed......

I have only used this microphone for two weeks but, in that time, I have put it on a boom, hidden it on a table and stuck it on my camera so I can do some run and gun work. Although, I use a separate recorder, I have plunged it in directly though camera and it does not sound half bad. I would suggest always using this mic with a portable recorder. Oh, and I love how compact it is. The dead cat as it is called, is really quite useful in rooms that boom or a windy day..
