I rarely make videos, but needed to record my daughter singing audition pieces for college applications. Just dipping my toes in the murky waters of videography, I knew an external mic would be beneficial, but didnt want to spend a fortune. It fit my cameras hotshoe fine (Fujifilm T-T3) and plugs into the 2.5mm microphone port. It comes with a fluffy wind-shield, which I didnt use as I was indoors. It costs about half of Fujifilms own brand external microphone. First step was to do a quick test of the Fujis internal mic versus this one. No question that the Rode made an improvement; mostly because it isolated my daughters voice from the incessant droning of leaf-blowers in my neighborhood (aaaah, suburban paradise!). The audition videos turned out very well, so my first serious foray into video was a positive experience. I can attribute much of this to easily capturing good sound, thanks Rode. ... More

Great little mic... I use this on my DJI Osmo. I must say, for the price, you can't beat this thing. Great audio, great quality. If you're going to invest in a mic, this is a good starting point. The super cheap ones won't work well and the really expensive ones can break your bank. I'm in college, so am currently on a budget when it comes to buying camera gear. Not by any means a professional, but definitely a prosumer and this mic is definitely satisfactory. I don't use it for this, but due to it's size and performance, I imagine this mic would be great for vlogging. ... More

Got these to augment my DSLR audio chapture during weddings. They are a huge improvement over the built in mics. They don't need batteries or adjusting at all (since the cameras auto adjust audio levels), so it's pretty much plug and play. Also they come with really great wind jamers that do a great job of eliminating mild to moderate wind noise. If I had to nit-pick, I'd say the shock mount is the weak link of this system. It seems pretty cheap and when the mic is held in one position, the mount will sort of form to this position and say that way. It's not a huge deal, since I can bend it back, but it's indicative of a cheap plastic that may break after a while. But it is sepparate from the actual mic, so I'm assuming that I can buy another one if the original ever bites the dust. ... More

So far, i have used this to capture audio in run and gun situations on top of my DSLR and also have recorded into a zoom h4n with it. The audio is clean with minimal noise, less noise when recording into the zoom vs. the DSLR due to preamps not being as good, that is expected though with any microphone though. This has great range and picks up high and low noises. It is very sensitive and would occasionally grab some camera noises but that can happen with other shoe mounted mics. The wire that comes with it is the perfect length and built of a high quality as this whole mic is. The shock mount works well and seems like it will last and not wear out at all. This mic also comes with a dead cat (wind screen) in the box and i recommend leading that on at all times One feature i miss having is the manual audio controls on the microphone it's self, other cameras like the video mic pro have this option. For the price and compact form factor of this product it is great and produces professional sounding audio in most situations. Rode did well on this one! ... More

The sound from this mic is great, and it's so lightweight that it works well on gimbals any small cameras. But the plastic mount really isn't very good. I have had it for a few months and the weight of the mic (and working in the sun I guess?) has gradually bent the mount down so now the mic points down at a 45 degree angle. I flipped it around so the down angle was now an up angle. But after a week it finally just broke completely. If they used a better mount this would deserve 5 stars. ... More

I watched reviews on this mic and was eager to get one in my hands. Well that turned out to be a bit of a problem as in was on a national back order. I knew I needed to get my order in to B&H as they are the first to get the new stuff in and of course they did.. Received the Micro and was impressed with the size but was really impressed with the sound.. INCREDIBLE! I can't believe this does need a battery and sounds as if it's amplified. I had to turn down my camcorders audio input level as I was peaking even at 1/2 setting 3 feet away. The fact that it was a reasonable price at $59 just made it my favorite and it came with a dead at for wind too.. Great mic. All pluses.. ... More

First let me start out by saying I ordered this Mic at 6:15PM and recurved it next day by noon. That's incredible fast shipping! B&H is the absolute best store for your camera needs when it comes to price, customer service, and shipping. That being said, let get down to the Mic review. I sold my Rode Video Mic Pro to purchase this smaller mic. The build quality was better with the video pro mic (as expected) but I love the compact structure of the micro. I also love that I don't have to switch on the mic when using it. I can just turn my camera on, hit record, and I'm good to go. Also, I can take the mic out of the mount and even add a bigger cord so if I needed to I could use it as a mic to hold and interview people. That alone is worth the "downgrade" to me. If I had to pick just one thing I didn't like about the rode micro, it would be that mount. If you don't clip in the cord to the mounting screw, then it wobbles all around. I think if the mount was improved it would make it a better mic. All in all, I'm satisfied with my purchase. Hope this review helps someone out there. ... More

This very small microphone comes with a separate furry' wind silencer and easily connects to my DSLR mic port. The instructions suggest using it on the DSL's manual mic setting but I have also been able to use it to good effect on auto'. My preliminary tests show it recording live music very clearly but recording conversations sometimes --but not always--results in a very slight hissing' sound...but that could also be my own inexperience in using the Mic. In any event for about $60 it is a very good and very reasonable alternative to the DSLR's built in mic. It is a good starting point for someone just getting into video. ... More

Bought this mic to try out after returning my Rode Video Mic Go, which i was rather unhappy with. I use it for these documentary pieces where i usually interview the person that stands about 3 to 6 feet away from me with the mic pointed into that direction. So far? this VideoMicro has exceeded my expectations. In my opinion, better performance than the GO. Not having to worry about the battery is awesome. Just plug it into your camera and go! Great build. Doesn't feel as fragile as i thought it would with the retail price i bought it at. Also comes with a windshield! which is great that you don't have to purchase it separately. Cons? haven't figured out too many as of yet. I'm on my 3rd interview with it and so far, so good...i mean. It does what it says. I'ma happy with it for now. It's better than the built in camera mic. ... More

I bought a couple of these mics to use on cameras that I use to get multiple angles. I wouldn't recommend for your main audio but great for back up. I got mine for 60 bucks and That is a good deal for a rode product. I also have the videomic pro which is better, especially isolating audio directly in front of camera. I would say that this is a great choice if you are on a budget and just need something better than the internal mic or for a b cam.

I bought this for use with the DJI Osmo, but I've used it with other cameras as well. The sound quality from the built in microphone is phenomenal. I really liked the fact that it doesn't need external battery power like some of the other Rode Mics I have purchased in the past. It is plug and play. This tiny mic compares favorably to mics costing several times more. Love the small size and lack of battery. Goes nicely with the smaller mirrorless cameras like my Sony A7R III. I use it on top of my Tilta cage in the shoe mount or on top of my Beachtek Micro when I'm using a preamp. Not crazy about the idiotic dead kitten (when it's not needed) and bought an Auray 3/4" foam windscreen that fits nice and snug after I slipped a rubber washer onto the videomicro.

The sound is much cleaner and the deadcat does a great job of eliminating wind noise. Placing the mic on the hot shoe doesn't do much to eliminate the noise from the lens auto-focusing, but mounting it on a flash bracket works great since it puts some distance between the mic and the lens. It would be nice if the cord was 2-3 inches longer. For the price it's a great buy because my main objective was to eliminate the noise from the lens.

Have a DSLR that has great video capture and wanted to upgrade the audio capture without adding on too much bulk for transport and use. 95% of my use is photos, but am increasingly taking video After a few weeks of use, the VideoMicro has noticeably improved the quality of audio, mostly in dialogue. Off camera audio is a bit more muted, which I expected from a shotgun mic. Note that some DSLRs (e.g. Canon 5D) have a manual setting for audio intake gain that is arguably set too high and could lead to audible static on intake on some external mics, the VideoMicro included. A one-time adjustment downward in the menu settings fixed the issue and I haven't had to do any post-processing audio adjustments to make the audio louder ... More

So, I would say the design and format of this microphone is a good idea. However, it really lacks in audio quality. Basically the gain is very low, and what it does pick up is hindered with a low hum. I have tested it on a Nikon D500, a Pentax K5, a handheld Olympus voice recorder, and plugged into my computer. In each case, no matter what setting I used, the audio quality is bad and has a static hum. With the D500, the Rode VideoMicro is worse than the internal microphone. The only exception might be wind, in which case this microphone can cut that out. However, the audio will require postprocessing to even be acceptable. In the end I returned it. ... More

I do a lot of man on the street interviews for my internet television network and this makes work so much easier. I now take this little Rode microphone in my Canon t4i bag. It takes up very little space. If I have the need to do a little video, then I get it out and attach it in about 1 minute. It works great. The wind screen (dead cat) works well. There is wind most of the time where I shoot. But that is not a problem with this mike. It is fairly directional, although not as directional as a NTG-3. So you will pick up some surrounding sounds such as a plane overhead or a car horn. But the mike is also very sensitive in the pointed direction. I found the sound to be of a high quality and the pick up great. I use this mike for those informal, quick, and spur of the moment videos. It fills that niche really well. At this price point of about $60, then it is no brainer to take along in your bag if your camera shoots videos. ... More

I shoot video occasionally for personal use or small paid gigs. I have experience borrowing external Zooms and shotgun mics, which are amazing tools. But I don't shoot video often enough to invest in those things. I just used this mic for an interview-style video and it worked great! No batteries to worry about (and ending up with zero audio), no syncing audio and video files in post (saving me literally hours), and it's small and lightweight so I can take it on outdoor adventures easily. My only complaint is that after shooting in a variety of locations inside and out, there is a noticeable feedback/hum sound in the background in all of the clips. This is easily dulled down with a Denoise effect in Premiere. ... More
