I bought this mic to replace my original VideoMic Pro that was getting beat up as the result of years work. The new mic works just as good as the original. To my knowledge, RODE is the only manufacturer who offers decent mics with +20 dB gain booster. This is a crucial feature to keep the camera's noisy preamp out of the picture. I wish other manufacturers offered this feature so that we will have more to choose from. On the other hand, I was disappointed that RODE had not addressed the problems that many users of the original griped about: the battery compartment door and the barrel construction. The battery door is so hard to operate. It's just a poor design. The barrel is so flimsy that it looks it will break very easily. Anyone who sees the mic with the windscreen removed will agree with this notion. I give this new mic 4 stars for the performance and 2 stars for the build quality. ... More

Sound quality on this is 10/10. It's lightweight, and compact enough to fit in your camera bag. The -10 and +20 dB gain options are clutch as well for noisy environments or a distant subject. The only downsides, as I see them, are (1) the lack of internal battery, (2) the necessity of the on/off switch, and (3) the very short 3.5 mm cord. (1) Needing to charge and carry spare 9V batteries is a pain, especially as this is the only device in my kit that uses them. An internal battery with USB-C charging port (OR drawing from the camera's internal battery via hot shoe) would have been ideal for my purposes. (2) The on/off switch is a great battery-saver, but it can also result in a recording with no audio if you forget to put it on & don't have the audio meters displayed visibly while your subject is talking. Risky. (3) The cord makes sense for being plugged directly into the camera, which I think is its primary intended use. However, I'd have liked if Rde had included a 5'-10' extension cord to use this on a boom arm. You can buy the TRS extension cable, which I will now do, but it would have been more convenient if the mic had been delivered with 2 lengths of cable (direct camera attachment + boom attachment) that could be swapped into the device with a detachable input port. All of this is to say: if you're a vlogger, YouTuber, or amateur studio film maker that desires high quality, lightweight audio plugged directly onto your camera, then this is a solid bet. To be honest, most of my complaints would have been resolved by actually DOWNgrading to one of the more entry level models with no switches or battery (e.g., the VideoMicro or VideoMic GO), but nevertheless I don't regret this purchase at all :) ... I've long been a fan of Rode since their Film Maker Kit. However, when I previously bought one of their shotgun mics, the battery cage design was so horrible and hard to use that I returned it. I just finished shooting my first wedding with the new Video Mic Pro Plus. The first thing that made me fall in love with it is the 100 hour rechargeable battery. Next were the L.E.D. lights on the back that show if the mic is working and the levels you have it set at for filtering and gain up to 20+. Finally, Rode is paying attention to the users of the equipment. Thanks, Rode for the better engineering design! ... More

Just got this microphone in today and put it through a quick test on the camera and it was great. My expectations were for it to record well at 3 feet but it has done a great job at 5 and 6 feet away. I purchased a Rode VideoMic and it had an issue where it wasn't working properly. This was my first purchase with B&H so I wasn't sure how they were going to be with a return. When I called up they said it was not a problem at all and they sent me a label to send the bad microphone back, which went out today. I was impressed with the way they handled the issue so I ordered a Rode VideoMic Pro after speaking with the representative from B&H, he said it was the best microphone under 400. After testing it I would say it is safe to say he is correct! As a first time buyer at B&H I am glad I purchased through them, I will be making future purchases with them because of the way they handled my issue with the bad microphone and because the representative I spoke to was knowledgeable. In short: If you need a great microphone and want to do business with a good place then buy this mic. from B&H. ... More

I was looking for an audio upgrade for my Canon Eos R system. I use my camera extensively for family videos which I put together every quarter. In the past I have used musical soundtracks for the audio portion but in mid 2019 I decided to go with the actual audio from the videos. I was shocked at how bad the audio was using the Eos R built in mic. Not so much the quality of the audio track as the quality of the audio being picked up. Almost every shot was overwhelmed by my breathing or the clicks and whirs of the older lenses. Or I was unable to focus my audio where I wanted it. All that changed when I put on the Rode VideoMic. I can now get the sound I want when and where I want it. At my grand daughter's first birthday I was able to record her smacking her lips as she ate her cake in a room filled with many conversations. That made it all worthwhile to me. With the boom pole and extension cord I am able to focus audio where I want it from the babbling of a babbling brook to the plink plink plink of maple sap into a bucket. The only thing missing from the kit is a pair of headphones. I already had a pair but it would be nice to have a pair designed for field work. Professionals may want more control over their audio, but for easy-to-set-up amateur recording the Rode mic does a great job. ... More

This is an omni-directional condenser microphone ideally suited for capturing people speaking without picking up sounds from the surrounding environment. It has a built-in 20db amplifier providing vocal sensitivity without adding noise. The microphone is light-weight, suspended to mitigate vibration, and is powered from a 9v battery. The mic mounts to the camera hot shoe. Having previously used a Rde stereo mic -- a great product with impressive stereo range and sensitivity -- I was surprised to find my interview recordings had an added hiss. Removing the noise layer itself was problematic, but there stereo mic was also picking up too much unwanted sounds from our office. I learned that many digital SLR cameras' built-in microphone amplifiers add a layer of noise detrimental to the audio capture. Audio is not the camera's first purpose, and the audio circuitry simply isn't up to the task. Using the VidMic Pro I could minimize the camera's own amp, and using the 20DB amplifier on the mic, obtained all the needed amplification without a layer of noise. Ambient sounds were also avoided. Rather than add a separate on-camera amplifier, the Vidmic Pro was an affordable and ideal solution. We captured clean interviews of personnel in a busy environment. ... More

I tried everything to reduce ambient noise and hiss (+20db, disabling on-camera AGC... etc) but this mic just captures everything. I was using the Rode SmartLav+ before and was expecting better sound with this. I have a 28mm lens so I'm very close to the camera and talking loudly the mic captures MORE ambient noise than the SmartLav+ connected to my iPhone. So it is just convenient and good enough when the conditions are there, but for more heavy duty I use the lavalier mic and it is WAY better. P.S. I don't use sound recorders or anything similar, although I know it could help, imagine a vlogger using that (instead of just having a lapel mic under the shirt connected to an iPhone in inside a jean's pocket, or the VideoMic Pro mounted on the camera). ... 4.5 stars would be appropriate for this mic. There is a noticeable gain from using this mic over the camer's onboard condenser mic (t5i). The only poor design I feel is the battery cover. Its a weak plastic cover plate and I feel like I might break one of the little hinges as I wrestle with it each time. As a precaution it is just better to remove the entire windscreen and mini wind jammer everytime you want to change the battery. Other than this its a good mic

I'm a fan of Rde and have a few of their mics but I guess I'm alone in my feelings about this VideoMic Pro. I needed something to improve the sound entering my Canon 5D Mark II. I decided on the Rde video mic, which gets good reviews. I ran a bunch of tests, using every configuration on the Mic and I just wasn't impressed - I even had a digital specialist eq it in Adobe Premiere and still I was disappointed. When I did the tests I also recorded sound with an iPod touch. The sound from the iPod touch was amazing compared to the Rde! The Rde sound was hollow, tinny and hissy. This mic doesn't cut it for the price. I'm returning and continuing my search. ... More

This is my second VideoMic Pro. I have used my other on countless videos on three different cameras and now four. The quality is very good for what it is and meets spec. Indoors, I use it with full flat-line audio but outdoors attenuate it, getting rid of most of the wind noise. The dead cat helps with breezes but above 10 MPH, it is just a band-aid. I also like that it has three gain settings. My Panasonic TM700 & 900 B video cams all record fine at -20dB setting. I set it at 0dB for my Canon T6i DSLR. I have used this as the main audio when another of my shotgun mics fail and it can be EQ'd just fine. And Rode's Service Department is excellent having fixed a Podcaster for free once when it wouldn't work anymore. Battery life is excellent, lasting for months. Two negatives: First the audio cable is susceptible to decay from sun and skin oils. I have no solution for this. It still works five years later but who knows for how long. the other negative is is changing the battery. Many have complained about its location and difficulty but once you do it a few times, it becomes easy and fast. I recommend changing it before a shoot. ... More

I use this mic primarily inside a make shift studio room. I could have purchased a lapel mic for the style of videos that I make, but I don't like how they look on camera and find that people who aren't used to being on camera are made more uncomfortable by a lapel mic. So I went with this shotgun and I use a boom to get the mic as close to the subject as I can. This makes it easier to get people in and out of the shot and also creates a more natural sound because it picks up a bit of background noise. I also love the boost on the gain as it lessens the load from the camera's preamp and sounds much cleaner as a result. ... More

Did a comparison of the VideoMIc Pro, MKH-50, MKE-400, MKH-416. Was surprised how good the VideoMic Pro sounded, it sounded very close to the MKH-50, (like a deep creamy sound) and sounded much better than the MKE-400 (a thin tinny sounding). Has a indicator light when powered on, just the other day camera guy was duped by the MKE-400 because he thought it was turned on. Build quality-it has a toy feel, plastic and cheap where as the MKE-400 metal feels expensive and high end. The mini windjammer sheds like a real cat. The only downside is its size, its big mic compared to the MKE-400 for on camera mics. Overall pleasantly surprised at the quality of the sound. ... More

This is a very good sounding mic for the price, and has some very good features: The lowcut and the +20db all work well. The shockmount also works swell. The included (at least with the current deal) deadcat is ok, but not great. Fit is wonky and it will only block out mild wind. The build quality is not amazing. The sound and features are beyond the build quality which feels plasticky and not robust at all. Also, the battery cage door is fiddly and it takes 9 volt. Who uses those anymore? The upcoming update for this mic looks to solve a lot of issues and adds some great refinements. Unfortunately, it's not clear when it will be released so I got this for now. One very underrated feature of this mic is that up close, it actually sounds like a really solid dialogue boom mic. So, you can actually mount this on a pole and go into either your camera or a zoom H1 and get a very decent, full, rich sounding dialogue. It needs to be in close to achieve a great sound, but that's what a boom is designed for. ... More

For it's size, sound quality, and price... it's ok. Definitely useable to capture dialogue at close range, but it does not replace a full size shotgun mic for sound quality. The build quality is mediocre and it feels pretty cheap in your hands. I would like to see more compact shotgun mics enter the market and I am sure they will as everything becomes smaller, lighter, and more portable. For now this is probably the one to get. I realize this isn't an mkh416 or even in the same ballpark. I just think it could have been better; such as better side rejection, better build quality. Others have commented on the battery compartment which seems fine once you 1. read how to do it and 2. practice a few times. The included deadcat in this bundle is fine. I haven't compared it to others on this mic. It blocks a good bit of wind noise. It fits and is not too fiddly to put on and take off. The 1/8 (3.5mm) plug is a bit on the tight side in my a6500. Now other plugs feel loose in the a6500. ... More

I've used a number of mics in this price range, and I'm not that impressed with the Rode Videomic in terms of sound. You're not going to get great sound anyway, having it seated atop your camera, likely pretty far away from whatever you are recording, but even so, sound is mediocre. But what really gets me is how maddening it is to try to swap out the battery. I spent a good 15-20min the first time, trying to get that stupid battery door closed. I've gotten better at it with practice, but it still takes 5min, when it should take 5sec. I only hope that whomever designed it is forced to use it for the rest of his life. That would be fitting punishment. There are better, and easier to use mics in this price range. ... More

This mic was very poorly designed. It requires a 9 volt battery but there is no indicator to show the battery power level. So you never know when to replace the battery. I bought a rechargeable 9 volt battery just to make sure I had a fresh battery for each show. I filmed 9 live shows with it from Sept. 4th 2018 to Oct 3rd 2018. 6 of the nine shows it sounded perfectly. 3 of the nine shows the Off/On/HPF switch started malfunctioning and the sound was muffled. I think the battery was heating up the switch and causing the switch to malfunction. I returned the mic and am waiting for the exchanged mic to arrive. I certainly hope the new one works properly. As for the VideoMic now...FANTASTIC! I will be purchasing the Dead Cat (or similar product) soon, though I have seen a lot of stray cats around my neighborhood, and might use one of them as it may prove to be more cost effective. I'm normally very forgiving on product design, but after two year of using this product the one thing that I can't get over is the impossible battery cover. Location and function is completely poor. I would not buy this product again. The microphone itself is fine, but it should take 10 minutes each time to change the 9V battery. I actually stopped in the middle of my frustration to go online, find the store where I bought this and give it a post review. This is my first mic so I don't have anything to compare it to other than the internal mic on my GH5. With that said, I am very happy with the sound reproduction so far. I recently recorded a post-sunrise video on a bayou and there were tons of birds and some yard chickens calling/crowing and they sounded great on replay. The Windbuster is NOT a Deadcat and the fit is a little suspect. There is a draw string at the back of the Windbuster but I am not sure where it is suppose to cinch down. The only obvious space would be between the mic isolation support and the back of mic barrel but there isn't sufficient room to hold the draw string in place. There is an elastic band with a snap that does fit and securely holds the WIndbuster in place. Also there was no diagram showing how to secure the drawstring. So all-in-all I'm happy with the VMP+ but just wish the Windbuster's securing mechanism was more "elegant". ... More
