I use the AT897 for recording sound in my films. Before this, I was using the rode videomic for all my sound. The original one. It was decent, but just plugging this mic into my zoom h2n recorder made a huge difference. I could hear the difference just in the recorder's built-in speaker. This mic will do finely if you don't have an MKH 416 or NTG3.

This shotgun mic has a clean audio, sturdy construction, and has a not to long not to short, perfect distance. Also it has a good price for what it does. If you are looking for a good all around shotgun mic, this is it! I am very happy with it.

I am an indie filmmaker making mostly short films and decided to get this microphone to up the quality. The results are fantastic and sound very professional. When comparing with the MKH-416, the specs are very close but for less than almost $, you'll get pretty much the same results and professional quality.

My only complaint is the location of on/off switch for battery use. It is located at the same area as the mic holder on a pro camcorder like the Canon XH A1S and therefore inaccessable. Good thing the mic uses phantom power and the cam furnishes it.

Have had this mic out for a few projects so far. It has a nice reach for a short mic, I had good results from 10 feet away. I would say that it is a bit bright, but nothing that gave me any troubles. I would also recommend getting a fuzzy windsock for outdoor recording. I have used this mic on a stand as well as mounted on my camera. It did well on the camera as long as the camera was stationary, but there was some handling noise when I had the camera in my hand, use a shock-mount. I like this mic and I am glad I have it in my kit. ... More

I use it with my Canon HD XA10 when I'm filming my short films. The sound quality is great and even though it's supposed to only pick up 7inches away, you can turn the maximum up and hear a little farther while its still clear. It's fantastic! It's the first mic that I have ever bought and I must say that it's definitely a great FIRST mic.

I am using this on a boom pole connected to an H4n unit to record audio for short movies etc... I love the sound I am getting out of this mic. I previously used only the audio coming into the camera through a rode videomic and while that worked well, now syncing that audio up to what I get out of the AT897 is way better. Much cleaner sound and less noise.

This mic provides a great value for low-budgeters. It won't give you the quality of sound you'd get from a $2,000 microphone, but this mic is still very well made. Great quality of hardware and great sound for its price. Runs on a single AA battery, fits perfectly in my homemade boom pole. And it looks pretty in its pretty carrying case.

Primary use for documentary interviews and scientific presentations in remote locations. Simple to setup with wireless transmitter and receiver (see recommended accessories). Great results in the field, very sensible, thus a little noisy. Very light weight and versatile for use by hand or on boom pole.

I really like the sound quality of this microphone -- it works well with my Tascam 100 MKii, and the length of this shotgun is perfect. I can fit all my gear perfectly into a small backpack. The sound is bright and clear, and is my go-to for interviews and even voice-tracking.

This worked better than I had imagined. The description on the manufacturers website was dead-on. The only thing that it needs is a on/off power switch. Small hassle it take battery in and out everytime you use it. Other than that....its great.

I used this mic at a church as I was filming a young female pastor. I simultaneously used a shure lapel mic. There was no comparison in that my AT897 was so clear and clean even when the speaker moved away from the mic. Editing the video was the easiest project ever.

I am a journalist transitioning to video work. As I upgrade my equipment I've become overwhelmed by the expense. At this point I can't afford a top of the line Sennheiser mic but this shotgun mic has given me great results. Suprisingly good sound and easy to use.

I used this mic on my first film! It's awesome! I'd recommend being as close as you can for best quality sound, but that's with any mic!

the sound is great for the price. I use it along with g3 lavs and the sound is just as good. it's omni directional and i'd say about a 4ft reach before you hit unwanted background sounds. I use this on a boom not camera

I bought this microphone with budget concerns in mind. After using it I would definitely say that it is the best bang for the buck you can get. I will be using it for a long time on many projects in the future.

AT897 - a workhorse designed for any production in studio and in the field. I outfitted with 3, knowing this mic provides clean sound in very noisy environments such as a culinary kitchen and without being obstrusive.

Been using it for about three months now with my Canon XA 50. Used for both interviews and vocals. Sound quality is awesome. For the price point I consider it a great value. I highly recommend it.

I use the mic for short multi-media interviews. Works great, I particularly like not having to mic my subjects and have a lav showing in the shot. Great sound and easy set-up, my only wish is for an on off switch. Terrific value.
