The primary reason I bought this mic is because most shotgun mics were making a lot of bumping noises on my C100 Mark II camera. I researched many mics but I trusted to order this one and that was it! Well... This mic does not come with Low Cut-Off and I was afraid when I ordered as my sony NX5 shotgun on the C-100 Mark II produces unwanted bass when handling. Thing is, the C100 cameras don't have low cut available on the menus... Believe that???! So... Problem solved! This mic in review doesn't come with low cut either but it's like it's already built in it seems... Very low and thin handling noise while it captures all the lows needed for voices or anything else you want to capture but still quiet on handling regardless if you're using this on camera or on a Boom... Wow. I can now touch the camera body and bottoms all day... I have this mic mounted on my Canon C-100 Mark II AND this is the ONLY microphone that I've seen at this price that has such a narrow pickup rivaling big shotguns. The bigger the tube the narrower the pick up is. It's amazing that one this tiny can be so narrow. Having the subject in front, audio is clear, then turn this mic a tad away and the sound drops considerably which is great. I also made a test right in front of my super loud window air conditioner outside. I turned 180 degrees, the noise was almost gone. Testing The mic on its sides, the audio was still quiet while nice and strong on whatever is in front of it. Very direct mic with excellent sound rejection on sides and back. When I have to touch and operate buttons on my camera, there is near zero bump noises. There's nothing worse than those bumps especially at full frequently which adds unwanted BASS on it thus damaging your headphones and speakers when reviewing the footage on camera of computer. Again, this mic took care of that issue. it comes with 2 O Rings. Many people don't know what those rubber rings are for! A lot of people complain that the shotgun mics is either too thick or too thin. The O Rings are EXACTLY FOR that! it it's too thin, put the rings on!! Simply slide them on the mic... I included 2 pictures of this mic in review attached to my camera with the O Rings which most camera mic holders are already designed to receive the O rings in between the spaces. Please see images. Bottom line: 1- excellent handling vibration /bump noise (even though it does not feature a low cut 2- excellent narrow pick up pattern even bring a short shotgun. Amazing... 3- Cheap and nice. 4- some noise floor at a minimum and that of course depends on the quality of your camera pre amps. Very quiet on the C-100 Mark II ... More

I've used this product on a few film projects so far. The audio is clear enough for good sound, and it can record loud (not rock concert loud) events fairly well. My two concerns here (taking price into consideration) is that the audio is captured from all around instead of infront of the boom, but one can't gripe too much about this taking the price into consideration. Although keep in mind in a louder environment like a lively bar, you will want your subjects speaking no further than a few feet in front of the lens (so make sure you have a tighter 35mm or less to stand closer in shot) There is some persistant high pitch noise that is very noticeable during monitoring, not so much if played back from regurlar speakers (though noticiable) this can be remedied with a low pass filter, but annoying considering my AKG Perception 120 has non of this happen. It is phantom powered, so make sure to have a pre amp like an i-rig pro, or interface (and a proper interface will always work better than a portable pre amp) overal, solid performer, does what it says for the most part, if you want more, you will simply have to spend more. Great for the starting audio/video enthusiast on a budget as myself. ... More

I bought this to replace my Rode NTG 2. I was using the Rode with the Zoom H4n and there just wasn't enough sesitivity from the Rode, and not enough gain from the preamps on the Zoom. I often had the input gain up in the 90+ range (0-100 scale). Now I am using the Tascam DR 100 II with the AT 875, and it is a diferent ball game. The AT 875 is very senitive and enables me to use much less gain on the recorders, making for a much cleaner recording, now I only need a gain of 3-4 on a 1-10 scale. It is a good mic for booming because of the sensitivity and because it is so light. Pushing the gain on any of the prosumer recorders is asking for noise and hiss.I liked this mic so much I bought another one. So I have one on my Canon XA-10 and one with my audio kit. I also have the Sennhiser MKE 600 which is very nice, but not as senitive as the AT 875. The Sennhiser has a little better sound and has better side rejection, and can run on battery, but it costs 2+ times as much as the AT 875. Between my Rode NTG II, the Sennhiser MKE 600, and the AT 875, I use the AT 875 the most!I consider a must have in my kit. ... More

Purchased this to go with a Canon XA10. Great fit, and most importantly is the length, which means the tip of the mic/wind screen isnt seen in the lens. The mic also comes with a couple of O-RINGS that slip over the end of the mic and makes for a good fit in the XA10's mic cradle. Another mic i have which i was using before i purchased this one i had to rap some neoprene around it to clamp it in securely. It also comes with a foam wind screen. If you wish to purchase a fur windscreen, get one no longer than 125mm (5) overall to go with this. Dont purchase the Rode WS6 (as i did), as recommended in the accessories, as it is to long and can been seen in the video of smaller cameras like the XA10. ... More

I run a videography company and use this microphone with my Sony HVR-A1U camcorder. It's a fantastic microphone for wedding and event videography, especially considering its size -- barely 7 in total length. The A1U itself is a small camera so this mic looks right at home in the mount, and the clarity of audio with this device is equal to that of my longer, more expensive ATR897. Can't hear any camera hum or noise operation of the mic itself; this thing picks up only what's going on around it, not what's going on inside it. Just be sure you use a high-grade XLR cable with it; I tried using an old 25' XLR cord I had lying around and the reception was terrible! Once I hooked up a 3' high-caliber cord, everything was as it should be. Only downside, and this is through no fault of the microphone itself, is that it's a little too small in diameter to fit comfortably into the included XLR adapter; I had to wrap a strip of rubber around the base, but this is no impediment to audio capture, and unless you're looking really hard it's impossible to even notice. Brilliant mic. Highly recommended. Works great indoors or out. ... More

I was in need of a camera microphone for my x70 and z150. I had been using a JVC microphone off a GY-HD700. This microphone sounds great! I was shocked at how much better it sounded compared to the old microphone. I am using it for nat sound but I can see it being usable for dialog. The only con with the microphone is that it is a little small for the Mic holders on the x70 and z150. There are included O-rings but they still don't fit great. When I bought the mic it came in a kit with a shock mount holder and XLR with a right angle on the mic end. Both of these went on the shelf as I didn't need the shock mount and I needed a right angle xlr on the camera end. I built my own cable, which I highly recommend. It is nice to have a short cable and out of the way. Mine might be built a little too short, but it is out of the way and I can always build another. ... More

I bought it to use with my DSLR and a TASCAM DR-60D audio recorder. Vocal reproduction, which is really all I'm concerned with, is very rich and natural, not at all tinny. I've used better shotgun mics but they were literally several times the cost of this oneand also much less suited to being used on camera. It's compact, and the pattern is right where you want it to be in terms of limiting background noise vs. being excessively finicky about where you point it. If you have a sound guy and a boom and you want the best possible sound quality and off-axis noise rejection, this probably isn't the mic for you. But if you're shooting by yourself and you want pretty good sound at a pretty cheap price, this is the best out there. ... More

This mic joins a selection that includes higher-end options like the Sennheiser MKH8060, but it isn't completely overshadowed. Truth is, this is a solid workhorse that is handy in any kit as a backup, or a stunt mic, or wherever you might want to add a mic and not break the bank. The sound of the AT875r is excellent: warm and balanced without the thin/tinny sound that a lot of cheap shotgun mics suffer. With -30dBV/Pa sensitivity and 100Ohm impedance, its output signal is strong. This makes it a great choice for beginners and hobbyists using lower-end recorders that don't offer as much clean gain in the pre-amps. The price means that this also works in any sound kit as a stunt mic, able to be planted in risky situations where it may not come out in one piece. If the mic gets destroyed, it's not a huge investment lost. I'm giving this mic 4 stars because, let's be honest, it isn't quite as good as the much more expensive options out there. But it's performance puts it close. Very close. ... More

I just purchased this Mic for film class. my first use was not for spoken audio but for external sound. It works amazing. I was able to pick up things I probably wouldn't have been able to really hear with my own ears. I was filming at the Salton Sea in California, a desolate, forsaken place and a particular location had a shoreline with nothing but fish carcass and bones. The mic was able to pic up the eerie lapping of the thick, sickly water along with flies and some slight audible wind to perfection. This is a directional mic so while it was able to grab the environment to a certain extent, it suited my direct focus needs perfectly. The only mark against it, if at all, would be that it requires phantom power but my Tascam already has that so it was a no brainer for me. I can't wait to get this thing indoors in a more controlled environment. Be sure to get a dead cat cover and a shock mount if you don't already have those. ... More

I bought one and used it for a week on a documentary. It has a surprising rich low end on voices even though the response starts falling off around 100Hz. It's smooth sounding and not very essy in the upper mids. That was a big surprise. The polar pattern is very nice too. Wide enough to not have to move the mic around constantly on a boom and the rear rejection is great! The static interviews we shot sounded pretty good as well, It has a nice loud output and the noise floor is pretty low as well (At least through the Tascam DR-60mkII mic pres). The only two things I wish it had are: 1-An option to use an internal battery (Not a deal breaker but it would be nice) 2-I wish it was a little longer (I think it was designed for being on-camera) Again, I really like it. While the quality is okay, it's a big hassle when I move away from the set--always getting hooked on things, and one time I actually yanked the cord and broke one. I looked at a ton of videos on camera-mounted cameras and was not impressed with the sound. Many of them are the same price or more as this one. The big difference is you need XLR to use this. As I am a musician, I have a mixer and that's not a problem. It was no big deal to mount this on a boom above me and plug into my mixer. The sound is great and I don't have to worry about being hooked up to the lav. If I ever need to go out and record, I'll either use my lav mic or get something like the Saramonic amp to power this. I felt comfortable ordering this because my main mic for recording music is Audio-Technica. I trusted the brand.
