Gorgeous!
I went down a long rabbit hole when deciding between this lens, the Sony 85/1.8 and the Batis 85. I watched videos and read reviews ad nauseam and finally decided to go with the G Master. I also own the 24/1.4 GM and really enjoy having the aperture ring on the lens as well as the other controls. Having a a matching form factor played into my decision but I have to say the rendering is gorgeous! I couldn't be happier with my purchase, I know the... Show More

Great Service & Great Lens
Buying a product online isn't always easy. I like how easy it is to buy something from B & H. Easy to order, orders are processed quickly and the order arrives in a couple of days. It doesn't get any easier than that. Thank you B & H. The lens is way good. I was out shooting with it this morning. I'm glad I purchased it. RJS

Super sharp
It really is amazingly sharp. This is my 2nd one. The first one i bought seemed to have a huge problem finding focus. When in continuous mode it would take several seconds just sitting there moving in and out of focus. I got rid of that one and bought a new one. I didn't want to send it to Sony for repair because i didn't want a refurb to be sent back to me. That was also on my Sony a7rII which never had this issue with any other lens. So now i have a sony a7riV and i want to see if this does any better with the autofocus.

Great build quality
This is a lens with great build quality. Good performance overall. Theres definitely some fringing shooting wide open. You need to correct this is post or stop down to get rid of fringing. The only thing which annoys me from time to time is the autofocus capability of this lens. It starts to misfocus in certain condition and the autofocus is not one of the fastest when comparing to other Sony lenses. This is a F1.4 lens so the focus speed cant o... Show More

outstanding product
after long testing i finally bought this lens , noting is short on this one ,color contrast and sharpness is beautiful. for those who claim for slow auto focus this is not a sport lens any portrait or fashion photographer ,but not limit to those two only , wont find any issues in my opinion . the build quality is impressive and if you like to shoot in black and white this is a delight lens and great choice . a bit heavy but once attached to the body the ergonomics make so much sense. also you can unclick the aperture dial for video ,so it make it just as good a video tool as for stills

Fantastic piece of glass
Yes the aperture ring takes some muscle memory so you don't go insane rolling the aperture dial on your camera and start looking for a box to send your camera back to Sony only to realize you set the aperture on the lens. This lens is sharp wide open and when it hasn't been I've adjusted my shutter speed to solve that problem (I've got the shakes bro!) .

Hunts for Focus
I brought the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM Lens and an a7rIII a year ago. I have been struggling with focus using this lens. I thought that it was me; after all of the online reviews speak of high praise for the lens and camera combination. After complete frustration with the lens, I brought a Tamron 28-75 lens. The Tamron consistently nails focus. Using the same camera at the same settings the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM hunts back and forth and it will not ... Show More

Amazing Lens
True to its Master name, this lens renders a very sharp image in the focus area. The bokeh is extremely creamy and smooth, just like magic.

Beautiful images, and beautifully made.
While this lens is known for its ability to excel at portraiture, and I can attest to the wonderful portrait images it can produce, I am liking the results in other genres as well. Its not hyper sharp, but I wouldnt have bought it if it was. I find the images of people much more pleasing from this lens than those from my Sony 50mm f1.4 ZA, which is razor sharp. This lens is more butter! Auto focus isnt super fast but I have never had an issue with it.

Not an all-rounder
Used this briefly recently and it disappointed,as expected. Im not sure all reviews are from pros on here. For weddings, event work, this lens is heavy, its AF is very slow compared to Batis or FE so catching moments is harder (not impossible just harder),the low light AF hunts a lot,it makes a louder noise than expected, bokeh balls are only important if your image contains light sources in the background. It seems meant for take your time portrait ... Show More

A must have lens for a portrait photographer
This is by far the sharpest and best 85mm Ive ever shot with. I previously shot Nikon and had the Nikkor 85mm F/1.4 which was a good lens and took very nice portraits. The only issue was shooting wide open at F/1.4 it would render beautiful bokeh, however it wasnt sharp on my subject. Generally speaking, the most fixed lenses are sharpest two stops up. The difference in the Sony 85mm is that I get tack sharp focus on my subject shooting wide op... Show More

all this drama over this lens! i wonder if the price and weight skew peoples perception....it just not worth triple the cost over the 85mm 1.8.

Perfect replacement for my beloved Canon F 1.2
Its a little heavier, but you have to love the feel of a good, solid lens. Ive been waiting for a good 85mm replacement since switching to Sony, and this lens so far delivers. Personally, I think its worth the extra money. They did a fantastic job with this lens.

Just do it.
If youre thinking about the price difference when going with the 1.4, just do it. You only live once and youre photos will speak volumes.

I keep finding excuses to use this lens more
For my coming trip, Im trying to save weight and space and it makes practical sense to use a zoom or a lighter lens rather than the 85gm. And on paper those practical reasons win the day every time. But whenever I pick up this lens and see the images I take with it, I realize I have to bring this lens. It just has that something that makes me want to use it.

Perfect 85mm Lens
Sony continues their roll-out of incredible glass! These are expensive optics, but you really do get what you pay for in the case of Sony lenses. I can't think of anything bad to say about this 85mm lens: it's unbelievably sharp, with beautiful rendering, bokeh and contrast, lack of chromatic aberration, and feels very well made. Love the clickable aperture ring. If I could make one criticism, it would be that the lens doesn't seem to have a part... Show More

Lemons
Got three lemons in a row but kept the third one. 1st copy, manual focus ring sometimes failed. 2nd one was decentered. 3rd one, the focus ring feels like it has some sand inside it but as it doesn't interfere with functionality, I kept it. Other than getting duds, great lens and thank you B&H.

Awesome lens!
Im using this on the A7s mark ii with the movi Freefly and it is quite a heavy lens! But so worth it. Its so sharp and the bokeh is to die for! An awesome lens. Im glad b and h supplies this with the CPL because since it does have such a wide aperture it lets so much light in. Awesome lens! Thank you Sony!

A Top-notch Sony len
The reason I bought it was because I tested it last month at Sony workshop in Yangon Myanmar. It impressed me with the gorgeous images produced by this gigantic len. I got it at a very good price in Yangon Sony distributor and I am very happy with it :) Although the focussing is not as fast as others Sony native lens but it is still acceptable to me.

I am so thrilled with this lens. Tack sharp...love the focus hold button. Expensive but well worth it if you are looking for the very best in a portrait lens.
