Yeah, its noisy, but buy it anyway
My copy is very noisy. I would buy it again though regardless of the noise. Image quality is second to none.

Autofocus: the Sound and the Fury
I have a theory about the complaints of auto-focus loudness with this lens. Compared to other Sony/Zeiss FE lenses designed for the mirrorless alpha system, the autofocus is certainly more audible; but that is because autofocus with lenses like the 55 1.8, for example, is virtually silent. Users of the A7 series of cameras have become accustomed to silent autofocus, and the 85 1.4 GM is not silent -- thus the complaints of loudness. Compared to t... Show More

Difficult to dislike
After using this lens almost daily since the end of December, I feel comfortable rating it a 5 out of 5. Yes, this lens does have its short comings in my opinion. Most are well documented such as: relatively loud AF motor, focus hunting when shooting stopped down, etc. My biggest gripe is that it has a few too many elements, at least in my opinion. I feel like 11 is a lot for a prime and I would rather deal with cleaning up CA and purple fringe i... Show More

11 is heaven
This lens lives on my A7rii and there is little to no chance it's ever coming off, unless a native 135 or 200 is released. Eye-AFC + 11 rounded blades + F1.4 has made me a very happy ex-Canon shooter. Sure, there are downsides to this lens. It has a few too many elements, probably not enough pop, not fun to use stopped down in a studio setting, loud AF motor, etc., but I would still purchase it all over again if given the option.

You want this lens
This is such a beast of a lens. 77mm filter thread pro standard. An f stop of 1.4 paired with Sony a7rII's eye autofocus . Tack sharp even at 1.4 just a slightly soft in corners. But what we call acceptable sharpness. The auto focus was a bit noisy but in real life time shoots you don't even notice it I swear. Not once did I stop and think man that is noisy. Just an amazing lens if you're serious about your gear and a portrait photographer. You want this lens. Wait Wait Wait you need this lens!!

SHARPEST PORTRAIT LENS FOR SONY
Where do I start? I'm shooting on the a6000 and the images are coming out SO SHARP. The bokeh is beautiful. DxoMark ranks this as one of, if not the best, portrait lenses ever.

Amazing glass, Beware of focus depending of use
It is one of the sharpest lenses that you can get in the market, is really great, Perfect!!! but I work most on studio with monolights and normally use F5,6 or more for catalogues or some fashion pictures that requires more detail on clothes or something like that . the problem is. if you step down F4 or more the AF on the A7RII is horrible. A lot of missed focus images You just think that Af locked in the right place, where you locked it , but n... Show More

Like someone turning on the lights...
Extraordinary lens. I have buying cameras and lenses for over 45 years (mainly Leica's) and have many times been wowed by a lens (i.e. the 75mm summilux, or a 15mm Voightlander) but this lens is on another level. It is really like someone turned on the lights and suddenly you could see. Yes the lens is on the large size but the results are even larger.

Worth every penny!
The sharpness of this lens is amazing. Perfect for portraits, great for a short telephoto and is now my choice for street photography. The tack sharp results are worth every penny. Highly recommended.

Super sharp, amazing bokeh
Highly satisfied with this purchase, it will replace my Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 - crazy to think Sony has outperformed Zeiss, but it has in my hands! This is a big lens but the images are spectacular.

i recomend this lense 100%
I was a little bit skeptical about purchasing this lens because I read in a few reviews that it was very noisy when focusing after testing it on my 7R2 for stills and on my fs700 for video I can hear the noise that they where talking about but is not as bad as they say for pictures is not a problem at all on the video side The stock mic on the camera never even picked up that sound send a picture quality is off the charts

Sony FE 85MM f1.4 GM Lens
I love this lens as I shoot video with it on the Sony A7SII, A7RII and the A6300. I love the de-click appeture and that I can pull a rack focus very smoothly with this lens. The reason I gave it a 4 star is that it is a very heavy lens and it does make a chugging noise if you use the auto focus features of this lens. If I was filming with auto focus and want to get a quick focus or use continuous face auto focus my video mic will always pick up t... Show More

Wow
My first sony lens. I hope sony continues this type of qualities for their G Master in other primes like the 35mm and wider. I would definitely buy them.

My new favorite lens
Had this lens about 2wks now and luv'n it. Can't use it as much as I would like because I shoot mostly video with my A7R2. The build quality is excellent, although, this lens is HUGE. I can see just a little vignetting wide open but nothing to be concern. At F1.4, it's tack sharp in the center and the background just disappears. Cost me a grip but was well worth what I can offer my customers.

Beautiful, but...
The images this lens is capable of producing are stunning. 3D pop, great bokeh, outstanding colorimetry... I could go on, but it's also a beast. Not just in its pure heft, but in the great growling sound it produces when autofucusing. Be warned. For some, this could be a deal breaker; For me, just an annoyance. There are threads about this floating around the internet. Some copies are quieter than others. Some profess that the latest firmware cor... Show More

Amazing as expected
A must have for Sony A7rii. The lens is a little big but I don't intend to use this set up for travel purposes. Keeping it professional with Sony and GM lenses.

Defective Lens
I purchased the lens in June of 16. Worked fine out of the box then went in the safe. Put it on the camera today in prep for a shoot and the lens will not focus. Camera beeps and lens locks up. This lens exhibited the loud rasping sound many have complained about. This appears to be just out of return timing so guess I'll be looking for a repair center for this brand new G=Master lens.

Phenomenal
I am blown away by this lens. The picture quality is phenomenal, and the autofocus is fast compared to the Canon L series 85 with the metabones adapter.

Totally awesome lens!
Tack sharp, quick to focus, works well with extension tubes when you want to get closer, and the f/1.4 is magnificent for isolation of subject and beautiful bokeh! Although it is known as a portrait lens, it is also a wonderful lens for a nature photographer.

Holy bokeh
I am in love with this lens. Build quality is outstanding. The lens feels substantial without being too heavy on my a7rii. The image quality is outstanding and incredibly sharp wide open. The bokeh is simply gorgeous. My favorite feature is the focus hold button on the side of the lens. You can assign it to whichever function you want and on the a7rii it is the perfect place to assign Eye autofocus giving me tack-sharp portraits every time so far... Show More

Expensive but worth it
I've been using a Rokinon 85mm lens for year and loved it. Actually I still love it, but this new Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM is in an entirely different league. Colour, contract and bokeh are stunning. It's right at home on my A7SII for stills and surprisingly works perfectly in MF mode on my FS7 and FS5. The sharpness you can get at 1.4 is pretty remarkable and the bokeh has this creamy, rich quality to it that makes you smile everytime you see it. I... Show More

This lens will make any portrait photographer very happy....but for me coming from shooting with my Nikon 200mm f2.0 or using the mega 85mm 1.4 Otus by Zeiss just didn't live up to my expectations. I use a Sony a7rii and absolutely love the mirrorless system over my DSLR. I guess comparing this lens to the 200mm Nikon f/2 or the beautiful 85mm Otus isn't fair because its just half the price Vs. the Otus and 1/3 of the price comparing the Nikon 20... Show More

Absolutely a must have on a Sony
When Sony announced the G Master line, I wasn't drooling over the 85 (the 24-70 and 70-200 were on my must have list). I picked up the 24-70 shortly after it was released (as in as soon as I could find one available) and it's pretty much been my go to lens ever since. That is until I picked up the 85. I had a day off in NYC a few weeks ago and after doing a ton of research comparing the Sony and Zeiss Batis lenses, I made the pilgrimage to B&H to... Show More
