A Legendary Classic

Jun 9, 2012

I'm a studio engineer/producer/musician. I've had my MDR-V6 phones for over 20 years, and they still sound terrific. There are only two downsides (and these are both well-known shortcomings): The 1/8 to 1/4 plug adapter breaks too easilyusually after a few years if you use it often. Just get yourself a good plug adapter and that takes care of it. (The built-in 1/8 stereo mini-plug is rock-solid with good strain relief.) The ear pad covering e... Show More

Great But Not Exceptional

Jan 12, 2009

I've had these headphones for around a month now and they have been great to me. At first I was underwhelmed at the sound quality but it took about 4-5 days for them to really start to sound how I expected them to sound. I mainly use them for listening to music, producing and mixing (although I'm no pro). For general music listening these are fantastic. Great clear highs, distinguishable mids, and the perfect lows. Some people say there isn't tha... Show More

Amazing Sound, So Glad I Bought These!!

Jan 11, 2011

I have been looking around for a good set of over the ear headphones to use in my office and for use on long plane rides, (been using earbuds for the compact quality, but they are just not comfortable for me). I also love music and have a good ear for the fullness and range of sound in the music that I listen to. I am always very aware of the quality of the headphones or speakers while listening. There were three things that I wanted in my purcha... Show More

90% Delighted With These Headphones

Jun 3, 2008

The 90% I'm delighted with are: The fantastic sound quality, comfortable luxurious feel, weight (not too heavy), fit (snug but not tight), and the well designed plug. Let me explain further - I traveled to every retail store in the city that had headphones I could try on before I made my selection; and read all the reviews on @and bought these. The sound quality equaled the quality of Bose for about 30% less money. They are very comfortable and c... Show More

No bass, Annoying hinges

Dec 18, 2012

I use these for everything from games, to music, to movies and everything in between. They replaced my Sennheiser HD280Pros and are definitely a step down in every regard outside of price and avaliablity. The first thing to note is there is absolutely no bass... everything sounds like tinitus no matter what I am playing off of... you can get it to acceptable if you want to fool around with equalizer settings or have a good soundcard but its a maj... Great headphones

Mar 29, 2011

I owned this same model of headphones in the late 1980s. They stood head and shoulders above the rest in their price range at the time. I wish I still had those headphones, because I'd like to compare them to the new ones I recently bought. When I listen to the new ones, they seem somewhat flat compared to what I remember. However, it's possible that the sources I'm using for listening are underpowered. Back in the late 80s, I owned the top-of-th... Show More

Great sound, good value

Mar 25, 2010

I use it for: mixing music with DAW I compared a Sony MDR-V6, AKG K271MkII and Sennheiser HD-280 Pro side by side. All 3 are high quality monitor headphones. I use it for mixing music and so my chief concern is the true reproduction of sound over the hearing spectrum. I played all of they through an ONKYO Hi-Fi set. According to my subjective hearing experience, Sennheiser HD-280 is having the least bass sound. Sony MDR-V6 and AKG K271MkII is abo... Show More

best headphones EVER!

Jan 22, 2012

I'm just your standard music lover that loves her music clean, crisp and clear when i put on a pair of headphones. I've owned this very headphone before and kept them for 10 years when they suddenly grew legs and walked away. (Someone took them-but i digress) to replace them i've had some suggestions of newer models and in my research i found those suggestions entirely over priced but went to various retailers to test drive them anyway. Awesome

Aug 20, 2018

I have been looking for really good headphones for some time. I checked out a number of reviews of various makes, models, and price lines. The review that jumped out at me again and again was the Sony MDR V6. I settled on the Sony and ordered them through B & H Photo. The entire process was fantastic, for certain one if the best online shopping experiences I have had- yes including amazon. BTW Amazon was quite a bit more expensive than B& H Photo... Show More

Best headphones I have ever owned

Oct 4, 2010

I have gone through countless sets of headphones and gaming headsets, and I had finally had enough. I've owned earplugs, over-ear headphones and around-ear headphones, and the MDR-V6 is by far the best set I have ever owned. I have had these for 2 years now, dropped them many times and they show no signs of wear or tear. The majority of the construction is of lightweight metal which makes these headphones incredibly durable, which was one of my t... Show More

Great Headphone

May 20, 2009

I own six pair of V6s I bought in 2004. Two live with a touring sound rig, two at home and two in the studio. At FOH I like how these headphones cut through the din of loud live music. When soloing a channel I'm able to hear well enough to fix EQ issues and pick up buzz and hum even at high surrounding sound pressure levels. At home I do a lot of rough cuts and I like the V6s because they do not emphasize low frequencies. They are not the absolut... Show More

Perfect for my needs

Feb 25, 2010

I bought these to use with my PC because I needed a solution to blast my music and play videogames loudly without annoying my family through our paper-thin walls. It's been over a week now and these headphones work great. I'm not a complete audiophile, but I do hear well and these headphones have allowed me to listen into all the little details I couldn't hear with my iPod earplugs. I don't receive any distortion playing rock on the highest volum... Show More

Value for Sonic Balance and Design

Feb 14, 2013

All in all, I think these are a great value for the sound quality, comfort and overall design. I think my critiques on sound are not ones that take into consideration the price point. I would not expect headphones under $ to reproduce a 3d soundstage precisely, but I have gotten used to audiophile stereo speakers, so it's hard not notice. I think they are really well balanced between the frequency ranges, but there is some of the space missing fr... Show More

Don't Make the Same mistake that I did!!

Jan 6, 2010

These were the fourth headphones I purchased in a string of headphones purchased over the last year. I bought the Sennheiser HD280's based on reviews and while they were bright and had a nice transparent quality to them, they lacked fullness and punch on the lower end. I found that I needed to listen to them louder than usual to get that full sound that I wanted. Bought a bluetooth stereo set that was not worth the packaging that it came in. Boug... Show More

A Good Mix of Comfort and Sound Quality

May 22, 2011

Primarily used with an iPod 160 while listening to heavy metal (mostly), original soundtracks/scores, classical music and rock. The design is old-fashioned, but still looks nice. Very comfortable cushions, especially around the ears. Cord is rather long and feels half as heavy as the headset itself, but looks very well built. This set is clearly meant for stationary and studio use (not for walks, exercise or outdoor travel). Sound quality is good... Show More

Comfort and wide range

Mar 22, 2011

These headphones are a very great value. I use them for personal monitoring for recording and playback off of my computer. The best part about it was that they are very comfortable. I wear glasses and most headphones out there cause a lot of ear fatigue and puts pressure on your temples. But, these are set up nicely to avoid the pain of wearing glasses with them. The frequency range is very wide so there are a lot of nuances that you will hear in... Show More

Good Earphones

Feb 4, 2010

I use these headphones on daily basis while programming and doing design work. PROS: They have quality construction and look pretty durable. The ear muffs fit right over the entire ear so pretty good for external noise reduction. Sound is good, I am just running them directly from my iMac so I assume if they are plugged into a nice amp, will sound better. They fold down for easy storage. CONS: The ears sweat inside if worn for any long period of ... Show More

A perfect mix of comfort and quality

Jan 27, 2010

I bought my first MDR-V6 in 2000 and bought a new pair in 2008 (because I broke the old ones, so note they did not stop working on their own). I've never had better studio headphones of quality that are this comfortable. I once wore my pair for 12 hours straight, and apart from having to air out my ears on occasion there was no discomfort whatsoever. The sound quality is great - it handles pretty high levels of bass and amplification without any ... Show More

All you need!

Dec 2, 2013

People spend way too much on headphones for silly reasons, like style, popularity, and so forth (Beats) when here you have something for 1/4th the price that produces perfect results. I have used these as a sound mixer on set and post and couldn't be happier with the comfort and results. I even take them out around town sometimes, though I'll admit the extra long cord can be a bit silly at times when walking around the city (though the length of ... Show More

Great Sound, even for an inexpensive set

Feb 18, 2014

I use these for video sound design and music production. For a cheap set of studio monitor headphones, they perform really well. They are comfortable to wear for long periods of time, even though they don't breathe well. You'll find that they help you regulate work breaks to cool off your ears. Not a detraction from how well they do in professional work setting at all. The sound reproduction is nice and level, with only a little dip in the bottom... Show More

Sony MDR-V6 - Review

Nov 23, 2011

I was very impressed with the Sony MDR-V6 headphones. The fit and comfort are excellent, but where they really excel is the quality and richness of the sound they deliver. I have four other Sony headphones, three of which were more expensive than this model, yet the MDR-V6 out performed all four in comfort and sound quality. The headphones are so comfortable that I forget that I am wearing them. That is where the coiled retro cord comes in handy.... Show More

MDR-V6 = Heaven on your head

Jan 10, 2009

I have owned my MDR-V6 headphones for 20 years now and have never heard anything better! Deep, rich bass with crisp clean highs and everything in between. I listen to quite a range of music and these work for everything.Since purchasing them I've only had to replace the ear-pads twice. Some feel this is a negative, but considering the superb sound quality, I will gladly buy new pads when needed. I really felt relieved that just last week I needed... Show More

Best Value

Apr 4, 2013

These are great headphones for the money. I have owned a pair for ten years, and just bought a new pair because the old pair were starting to look ratty. It's funny how the design has really not changed at all in ten years. And that is ok because the design is great. How often does that happen with consumer electronics? I listen to music on headphones for hours every day while I work, so quality is very important to me. The sound is strong on all... Show More

Great ENG field headphones

Feb 18, 2010

Most headphones are designed to make music sound good. These seem to be designed to help an audio guy hear problems -- exactly what I needed! I use them with a variety of mics for my camera during interviews and whenever I'm really concerned about levels and distracting ambient noise. They'll pick up whispers of wind noise that other, much more expensive headphones don't reproduce well. In fact, they're great because I can detect noise I don't wa... Show More
