Use this for my live Man-On-The-Street type of Video Gigs. The sound is strong. When used by itself it can be slightly Boomy unless you set the Gain as needed. I do no Post because I feed my Mics - Shure / AKG / Azden - into a Behringer 1002B Mixer. This Mic is very good and very smooth. Best of all - NO HISS! Really and truly. If you offload the 24bit/96k WAV you get a pure sound. This mic allows me to set the SL1 / 5D / 6D / RF400 to very low levels. About a setting of (8). This means no cheap pre-amp hissy sounds. ... This is an amazing mic for the cost. What attracted me to this more than the Rode VMP is the sturdy rycote suspensions instead of the rubber bands used by Rode. In terms of audio quality it's a great step up from the internal mic on my t3i. People recommend to lower the input gain on the internal mic to one notch above 0 and enable the +20db gain on the mic itself to reduce the hiss on the internal preamps of the cameras. It does work but I would even recommend just leaving it at 0db because +20db will tend to make your audio over modulated and become distorted especially if the subject talking is extremely close. In all, this was a great purchase and highly recommend it. ... More

I recently lost my previous microphone a Rode VideoMic, I had had it for 4 years and it had great sound pickup. The only downside was that the rubber bands that the first model came with would eventually have to be be replaced and the suspension system wasn't good at all, and it was also extremely long. This Shure VP83 fixes all these issues I'd been having with my previous microphone, it's shorter, more compact, and has a much better lyre system. Plus the sound is still fantastic although it has slightly less substance than my old Rode VideoMic, but picks up very minute details. I find this to be a very very good microphone and even better it was on sale too. I've only used this about 5-6 times but for what I need, and can't wait to use it more ... More

In limited use thus far with my Panasonic X920 camcorder this mic performed very well and significantly outperformed the built-in mic which on the X920 is itself not that bad. I considered a Rode VideoMic Pro but went with this model because I read it had a sturdier shock mount and a robust coiled cable. It also uses a single AA battery as opposed to a 9V on the Rode which made more sense for me. I was worried about the mic showing in video taken with my X920 d/t the forward placement of the cold shoe but it was clear of the lens' field of view even with an accessory 0.8X wide angle adapter. This mic has a gain adjustment dial which can be set to -10, 0 and +20dB and a low cut filter which has performed well in eliminating background noise. Overall the mic is well constructed and performs as advertised. A bit pricey but in the range of its Rode equivalent. I am happy with the purchase. ... More

I was between the Rode video mic pro and the Sennh MKE400, I tested both and then I saw this Shure and gave it a try. It has a much better build quality than the others, a great rycote shock mount and is very very sensitive. The levels on my GH3 are always at 1 with it. It also has a LED to warn you about battery life and an extra +20db setting. Great microphone for the price. delivering great audio.

I have used this microphone only a few times since I was given it as a gift (but I did ask for it specifically). I have used it on my Pentax DSLR and there's a little static when there's silence, but when recording on the computer there is practically silence when there is no sound. This means that the microphone has almost no static itself. I think the only thing I don't like about this microphone is that the switch goes right up to On instead of the low pass filter (the little line between) but other than that it works very well. I like the tripod screw on the bottom, the aluminum body, the single AA battery use, and the plastic holder. ... More

I use the LensHopper on my second Pocket Camera. The first is set up with a pre-amp, but I decided I needed something smaller as a nose mic for the other. As everyone knows by now, the Pocket is notorious for thin audio. This mic at +20, with the mic input on the camera set at 20% delivers very useable ambient audio, and in a pinch, I've even recorded dialog with it - as long as the subject isn't more than 5 or 6 feet from the camera. The Rycote suspension is excellent, and the Mic with the fur (I don't like dead cat) is surprisingly useable in medium wind. I tested it along side my Sennheiser 416 on the other camera, and although not as robust, this little thing stands up pretty well. The angled plug can create a problem for cable clamps on some cages. I filed the side of the clamp on mine - a short extension would be another solution. ... More

We do a lot of run and gun stuff and this mic works very well for that. We drop it on top of our 4/3 or video camera and go. It picks up a bit more background noise than our Rode videopro but it hones in nicely on the voice. It is a bit tinny compared to the Rode, also, and for that reason I'd give it 3.5 vs. 4 if I could. But I do like how much more accessible everything on the camera is using this mic so I'll probably shoot with it more than anything else. I'd buy it again. Not sure yet but if it has the legendary Shure quality and durability, it'll be a mic we can rely on for year. ... More

This mic was purchased a few days before a trip out of town to shoot video for my business. My old mic seemed to have a problem and I could not longer consider it reliable. The folks at B&H recommended the Shure VP 83, and owning a VP 88 from the good-old-days of pro equipment I knew the Shure name was good. I only had a day to play with it before the trip, and quickly figured out which of the 3 settings were going to work best for me. The 3 settings give the user the flexibility of changing ranges, and that will b useful for me in the future, although mostly I will use the -20db setting. The mic also fits further forward on my camera versus the larger ones that have more length, thus it is out of my way, and more ergonomic for me. Seems like a great mic for a smaller camera, and the service at B&H was second to none. Thanks for the prompt help and shipment. I would have given it a 5 rating but I have only used it for 2 days in the field. Greg S. Professional videographer & Producer ... More

I needed mics for my dslr cameras, and had previously gotten microphones at about half the price that weren't cutting it. I was getting a lot of hissing due to the weak pre-amp on those cameras and I needed something more powerful. Immediately when I got the VP83 I was shocked by the high gain and high quality. At +0 db on the microphone and with the gain on the camera as low as possible I got a good volume. Also, the quality is the best on any microphone I've ever used, including one that I got specifically for recording voice. Everything is clear and most importantly I have no hissing on my videos. Maybe a bit expensive for an amateur, but totally worth it in the end. Will be using these to film my documentary. ... More

I follow Casey Neistat on YouTube and looked at his gear. This was one of the on-camera mics he used. I had to shoot a small wedding and I needed to be small and nimble so I shot it all handheld on my Canon 7DmkII with this Sure LensHopper mic. My headphones didn't cancel out enough of the room noise because I thought the end product was going to be a little noisy. This little mic was pretty amazing. No camera noise and very directional and clear audio. I would buy it again and recommend to anyone that needed a high-quality run and gun on-camera mic. ... More

I'm using the VP83 on a Panasonic GH3 and it's a big improvement over the built-in mic as expected. The Shure brand goes way back. They know what they're doing and this little shotgun mic has not disappointed me. Now it isn't quite as good as a full size shotgun mic but it does a really nice job for its compact size. Only caveat is remember to switch it on before starting to film since it isn't phantom powered.

The build quality is great, it feels so solid compared to the plastic of the Rode. The sound quality is also up to par! With the proper audio levels on your camera, there?s little static, and with an audio recorder, it?s even better! Highly recommend this as a first microphone before stepping up to XLR

Used on a Canon 60D using the +20db switch and adjusting the volume manually in camera. The mic picked up voices excellently while keeping the background noise where it needs to be - in the background. Overall great sounding mic when placed closer to the person being filmed, don't have any complaints thus far. Major kudos to B&H for free shipping during the holidays!!!!

So far, this microphone has been a great companion to my Canon t3i. I have used both the LensHopper and the Rode VideoMic Pro, and I have to say that both of them have the same audio quality. But the LensHopper is stronger and will not fall from its shock mount. Plus, you can use a single battery for weeks. The only downsides are that you can't monitor your audio levels (no headphone plugin) or your battery life until it is drained, but for the price you can't complain about that.

Not an audio expert so I can't go into any terminology but this microphone has greatly enhanced my production quality! It also arrived promptly and well packaged. I chose this over the rode videomic and am very pleased with it. The sound quality is great, easy to use and set up, feels more solid and durable than the rode mics and accessing the battery is much easier than the rode as well. For a run and gun audio solution for your dslr/mirrorless camera setups this mic is a great value!

This mic is one of my absolute best choice of microphones regarding sound quality and usability. I have used this in different conditions and various spaces and still after 5 years of use (I bought mine in October 2015) I love this little powerhouse. The only thing I'm sad about is that the windfilter started to crumble off to the point that the mic became 'naked'. Now I only depend on the dead cat I bought with this mic. That's why to me this gets a 4-star rating.

I returned a rode mic video pro which was extremely problematic to remove and replace the battery cover and also felt flimsy and rubber banded on basically. This is a sure fire upgrade from that as this is a sturdier more solid mic which also fictions on a cheaper battery. I have only used it once so far but it's far superior . I'm using it for a mark iii and solid and sturdy. Sound is great and gives you several options x
