The Great Olympus 17mm 1.8

Dec 11, 2019

Today, 12-11-19, my Olympus 17mm 1.8 came to my door. At 80 yrs. old, I took my photography years ago with my Pentax K1000, So, I mounted the 17mm on my Olympus M10 Mark 111 and took a manual shot in low light. It was Great !!!! Several shots outdoors with this lens and I love it. I switched to auto focus, which is very fast and the details are very sharp also. Buy this Olympus 17mm 1.8 and you will not go wrong. Not terribly sharp

Dec 4, 2019

I bought this lens as I really wanted the classical 35mm equivalent view. It works well for portraits, where there is only one thing in focus. I was less satisfied for landscapes, where the lens was not particularly sharp in the corners. In the end, I got the Panasonic Leica 15mm f/1.7, and I much prefer that lens.

Great travel lens

Dec 3, 2019

An effective focal length of 34 mm is ideal for a wide range of travel needs. I bought the lens primarily for the feature whereby you pull back on a ring and it switches to manual focusing and displays a depth of field scale. How retro! Owners of Lumix cameras should be aware that switching to manual focus in this way does NOT deploy some in-camera features such as MF Assist for more accurate focusing. However, it does switch on Peaking. To me this is not the fault of the lens, but the camera.

OK. Not Great.

Finally moved up to a prime lens from my kit lens, but was disappointed that the 35mm wasn't much sharper than my 14-42mm kit lens. Just a little sharper in the corners. Still I gained two stops in brightness and the ability to switch easily to manual focus. Good thing I bought it on sale.

Great medium wide angle lens for MFT

Aug 20, 2019

I love this lens, very sharp and good for lower light situations with f1.8 apeture . I really like the clutch for manual focus, wish they had the clutch on the 45mm f1.8. The lens is well made, wish it was weather sealed though.

Compact, all-around wide angle prime lens

Mar 31, 2019

I wanted a small wide angle prime lens for my Lumix G9. The auto focus is fast, and the manual focus is easy to use (especially with its MF Clutch). This lens is a great wide angle for landscape shots. Its maximum f1.8 aperture is fast, and also achieves a pleasing bokeh effect for close-ups.

Sharp, light and smooth focus are the main advantages of this lens. I use it primary for street photography on my PEN-F. Great lens.

Takes great pics in daylight. Even though f/1.8 night time pics not what I thought they would be. Used both auto and manual settings. Need to really work with settings to get good night pics.... which is not easy when you are trying to capture the moment. Also pricy and no zoom.

Little Gem

Sep 18, 2018

This is a fantastic little lens. It is very compact, yet feels sturdy in my hand. All metal construction adds a feel of quality and durability. 1.8 aperture is very useful in low light conditions. This lens can be autofocus or manual focus. You can switch the modes by pulling the focus ring forwards or backwards. I found that out a few weeks in on owning this lens. It would have been nice to have discover it sooner. I hope you will. When you can ... Show More

Very useful, too much vignetting

Jul 2, 2018

Very useful focal length, tiny and light lens, I really like the manual focus ring shift. Vignetting is bothering at f/1.8 and still at f/2.8, but it can be compensated for by the camera (menu settings). Sharpness is very good.

Pleasant Surprise

Apr 30, 2018

Im a retired photojournalist and Ive started going out shooting street photos, mostly of people. I fondly remember shooting Nikon primes when I was a young photographer, but I didnt use the 35mm lens very often. I relied more frequently on the 24 and 20mm lenses. I have switched to micro four thirds and bought the Olympus 12, 17, 45 and 75mm lenses. Shooting on close-up scenes, in crowds, tight spaces or just standing near people, I find this 17m... Good lens, could be better with one minor fix

Jan 29, 2018

This lens works well. The wide aperture and 35mm equivalent focal length make this lens useful for a wide variety of situations. The lens has solid construction and the manual focus snap ring is convenient. The size is great and it focuses fast. I primarily use it for indoor photos. The only thing keeping me from loving this lens is a software bug. The manual focus ring behaves differently than it does on the 12-40 f/2.8 zoom. On the 12-40 pull... Show More

Fine So Far

Dec 12, 2017

I just got this a few weeks ago for my Pen-F, and have only taken a couple of dozen pics with it, but no quarrel with the results. The build quality is excellent, but this is a "plain Jane" lens, and doesn't have some of the features Oly's other lenses have-but I wouldn't use those features anyway, so it doesn't really matter. Nowadays, I'm primarily a railroad photographer, and use a lens between 2.8-5.6. Resolution is more important to me than ... Show More

A Useful Low-Light Lens

Oct 30, 2017

This works as a good, fast, sharp, 34mm-equivalent walk-around lens on my Panasonic Lumix GH5. B&H's price was quite reasonable. Though the lens is not optically stabilized, the camera body is, and at this wide angle not much stabilization is generally needed. I look forward to taking this lens as my low-light go-to lens wherever I travel and shoot my YouTube travel videos.

Should be considered for a MFT kit.

A nice handling and looking lens. Seems very sharp to me although I'm not much of a pixel peeper. Very useful field of view and easy to manual focus. Looks good on my EM10 mk2. Only drawback is the lack of an included hood. Shameful. Otherwise 5 stars.

This lens replaces my Lumix 20mm H-H020 on my GX-7. The Lumix lens never seemed to have accurate autofocus and sometimes hunted for focus, racking in and out for up to a second. This lens doesn't do that. The focal length is a little bit wider, closer to a 35mm full frame equivalent. The filter/hood treads don't move in and out and don't retract into the barrel of the Lumix, so you can use a cheapo rubber hood safely instead of the pricey Olympus... Show More

Great indoors still camera

Sep 24, 2017

To test how this lens worked, I used this lens at a Quinceaera I was invited to. The festivities consisted of an indoor service inside a fairly dark church, followed by a reception at a nearby indoor hall. In order to not disrupt the service or the festivities, and since I'm a natural light photographer whenever possible, I elected to not use a flash (Also, the ceilings were too high to take bounce flash pictures). I used this lens on my Panasoni... Show More

Best lens for street photography

Feb 22, 2017

I've been using this lens on my Olympus Pen F for two weeks. It is now my favorite lens for this camera for several reasons. First and foremost: it is the ideal size and weight for micro 4/3 cameras. I can carry this all day long without any problem. Second: incredible resolution and color rendition. Third: great Bokeh for portraits. This is the best lens for street photography. Subjects find it less threatening than a zoom lens if they even notice it at all. I normally ask permission before photographing people but we all know there are situations when permission is not possible or advisable.
