Great lens for portraits

Nov 29, 2016

This lens is advertised as a portrait lens, but I hoped that with 85mm (35mm equivalent) focal length it can be also used as a general purpose lens. First, this lens does take beautiful portrait images. I can definitely say that the first few shots I made with it are the best portraits I have ever made. I am using it with E-PL8, and to my surprise, the images look better than I've taken with Canon T2i and Pentax K-50. It is not just the technical... Show More

Impressive lens, great for things other than portraits too.

Feb 15, 2018

I splurged and bought this lens after buying a few cheaper zoom lenses from both Panasonic and Lumix, realizing it would be a better bang for my buck in the long run to buy my "goal" lens rather than wasting my money on cheaper ones in the meantime. I bought this lens before fully understanding the G7 that I was using it with, but was still able to get clear, crisp, and colourful photos - as I've grown in my photography skills I've found so many ... Fantastic Portrait lens!

Aug 30, 2015

I was really excited when I saw the annoucement of this lens. Finally some competition to Olympus's 45mm 1.8 lens but with an huge added bonus, Image Stabilization! This was a surprise as this has similar features to Panasonic's most expensive lens, the 42.5mm F1.2 O.I.S but for 1/4 of the price. I really wanted to see how this compares to both the Olympus 45mm 1.8 and the expensive F1.2 from Panasonic so I set up some tests and was VERY impresse... Show More

Nice, light lens.

Jan 12, 2016

Plastic with a metal mount, very lightweight and small. I chose this over the heavier, larger, better constructed, brighter and much more expensive 1.2 version of this focal length in keeping with my mirrorless philosophy of keep it light and small. I take my micro four- thirds gear with me when I travel. The lens has image stabilization built- in. It's always on on Panasonic bodies (no switch to disable it) and my understanding is that on Olympu... Show More

Panasonic 42.5mm f/1.7: Great!

Nov 9, 2015

I'm using this with a Panasonic G3. the only other lens I had for the camera was the Panasonic 20mm. I also have an adapter to use Nikon lenses with micro four thirds. The 20mm is incredible, and this 42.5mm is incredible too. It's my first image stabilized lens and the IS is effective. The lens is so small and light, but a f/1.7, and it focuses quickly. Seems comparably sharp as my 20mm, but it comes with a hood, and is quite a bit narrower. I s... Show More

Favourite MFT lens

Jan 4, 2019

This baby has become to be my absolute favourite in the MFT system, a go-to lens, even though I mostly do street photography and candids. Granted, I havent used Leica branded lenses yet, but from philosophical perspective this one is quintessentially the essence of MFT as a system - compact, cheap, and good-enough. Good-enough is probably a bit of an understatement though. Its image rendering is gorgeous. I has got that soft (in a good way) fil... Show More

Impressive little lens

Sep 28, 2015

Recieved this from B&H 2 days ago. The form factor and what it can do is just amazing! It adds almost zero weight to my gear load and yet I can do so much more with it. I'm also enjoying the quasi-macro capability of the lens. Autofocus is quick and can almost lock on target except for some really low contrast situation. Impressive! The lens hood is a great addition to the package, though i wish they would have supplied a hood-cap like the 15mm P... Show More

Excellent purchase

Oct 14, 2016

I needed a prime telephoto but was weary of going to Olympus 45mm due to lack of stabilization since I use the GX7. GX7 does stabilize don't get me wrong but it's far from ideal or what you're used to in the Lumix lenses. So when this one came out I just had to get it and when the oportunity came I got one! Super happy btw and the lens is exactly what others have said in the youtube reviews: sharp wide open, small, smooth focus ring for those who... Show More

Great things come in small packages

Mar 27, 2018

The 42.5mm is a great compact lightweight lens with amazing good performance. I use this with the GX85. For me, it's more than just a portrait lens. With the GX85, AF speed is amazing fast and accurate for stills, the Dual IS allows for hand held bursting while panning fast. And does smooth hand held video panning. The Bokeh is excellent, and it can close focus less than a foot. The only cons of this lens is the focus by wire. That makes MF dif... Show More

Use it on E-M5 mk.1 for 7 days&nights at Khumbhmela Festival through the dust, dirt, rain, fierce sun, night light, and millions of people of the fest. Every grams of weight that you have to carry with, counted. Unlike those big lenses which interfere every activities immediately, its smallness rarely call no one's attention. Amazingly sharp!

I recently purchased a Olympus Zuiko 75mm f1.8 (as part of the portarit kit), but after trying out the lens, the 75mm just feel sluggish and did not focus where I point to (on the E-M5 MkII screen). I got about 1 usable photo out of 5 or 6. Thinking maybe this is a defective copy, I returned the kit (along with the 45mm), and purchase the Panasonic 42.5mm instead. It arrived and I can't wait to try it out. I find the focus speed of the 42.5mm to ... Show More

Really Happy

Oct 27, 2015

I have owned the Olympus 45mm for almost 2 years and have been very happy with the quality, but recently started to have some electrical issues between the GH4 and the Olympus. Not sure of the cause, but am working on a couple of projects right now that I can't have a questionable fast medium telephoto lens. When Panasonic ran the recent sale, I purchased one as a backup. I have been completely satisfied with the optical quality, quick and silent focusing. Again, I was not dissatisfied with the Olympus, but have really fallen in love with this newer design with optical stabilization.

An excellent portrait lens

Jan 14, 2019

I purchased this because the price was attractive and I wanted to add a fast portrait lens to my micro four-thirds camera bag. This lens is an excellent value; the images are sharp and clear even at the widest aperture. The autofocus performance is fast and accurate. The build quality is not as robust as that of a more expensive lens, but since one of the points of doing M43 photography is to travel light, I dont see its modest construction as a flaw. Overall, I have been very pleased with this product.

Perfect Portrait Lens for M43 Cameras

Oct 27, 2015

I'm an amateur photographer and mostly just take pictures of my toddler and family. I've been looking for a portrait lens for my Panasonic GX1 but, until recently, all the options were very expensive. After reading the positive reviews for this reasonably priced lens I went for it . . . and am so glad I did! Between the quick autofocus and high aperture, this lens is very versatile with regard to lighting and shooting situations. And being that it's M43, you get it all in a compact size.

Excellent M4/3 Lens

Nov 17, 2015

This lens is tiny but looks right on the GH2. OIS was the reason for getting this lens because I do use the camera more for video than stills. And it doesn't disappoint. Auto focus is very fast, however manual focus is all over the place depending on how quickly you turn the focus ring. Great for close-up photography. Produces sharp photos and video. Other reason for review was tired of looking at the freaky doll sample photo.

Sharp, Light and Bright!

Aug 28, 2018

I love, love, love this lens! It makes my GH5 so much lighter to use than my zoom lenses. Really sharp and the 1.7 really helps with low light situations so no more having to crank the iso to 6400 in most situations and it has creamy bokeh. This the and the 25mm could handle most photography situations. For video it makes a little noise using afc but not too loud. The pro zooms are best for silent shooting. Overall great buy!

Photo was blurry without this lens! When I attached this lens to the camera it lets me take a picture that is MUCH MUCH clearer. (picture was a white blob before attaching lens) I will continue to put a lens on the camera for a clear picture. I must admit that the camera is much more compact without a lens but you need a lens to take a sharp picture I now use a lens for every photo I take-my photography has improved 100%

Epitome of Micro Four Thirds sizing and quality

Dec 23, 2017

This lens out performs my previous but well rated Oly 45mm. It's perfectly good for portraits taking in the cost differences of PL f1.4 or Oly Pro f1.2. The results are very acceptable and sufficient for what I like to end up with. This f1.7 should be much enjoyed for so much packed in so small a lens. After all, that was my objective on getting into MFT. This lens seriously competes with bigger and more $$$.

Outstanding

Excellent portrait lens & great value. Transitions from sharp to bokeh are that of a very high quality DSLR lens. A must have for micro 4:3 users. It delivers beautiful results and easily doubles as a macro lens which is great for those of us bringing gear along on remote camping trips. An essential piece to a perfect 3 lens kit, just add a wide angle zoom and a telephoto zoom and you have your bases covered.

Exellent lens

Finaly! Have kit lens 14-42mm that wasn't making good quality pics. I have Nikon P600 that takes same quality photos & was going to sell GX7, Was expecting better quality with 3/4 sensor and kit lens wasn't doing well. When put this lens using tripod without flash or light - pic is almost as good as on my Nikon D800... almost. With good light you can get good pic without tripod too with 1.7f 1/100 or faster.

Really nice portrait lens. This lens is a must have for Lumix users. Sharp, fast and image stabilization. I just used this lens for the first time to shoot some head-shots and I was completely satisfied with the results. I love that shallow depth of field you can achieve with this lens, not to mention it has a little macro capability too. My only criticism is I wished it had a little more weight to it.

Great for Video

Feb 25, 2016

I bought this lens to replace the LUMIX 42.5mm f/1.2. The 1.2 was a spectacular lens, but it mostly sat on my shelf. I couldn't justify having so much money tied up in a lens that saw minimal use. At a quarter of the price, this lens is perfect. I use it for video when I need a longish lens and want that blurry background. Yes, it's plastic, but you probably won't notice a difference in image quality.

Video Use: Nice OIS

Aug 13, 2015

Main attraction of this lens to me is the OIS and the f1.7 speed. The focal length is good for handheld interviews. Plastic barrel and feels a little cheap but the glass is great and it delivers sharp images. The focus ring spins with no stops; wired focus I believe they call it. Not a Nokton but appreciated for what it does. Would give another star if it was a bit less expensive.

Above Expectations!

Apr 8, 2017

Bought this primarily for video but also to do some occasional stills. First thing that blew me away was how tiny the lens is, so portable, it fits in my pocket. The autofocus is FAST, blows my other Panasonic lenses (20mm & 12-60) away in that regard. It's also very sharp wide open which is nice since 1.7 isn't actually 1.7 on an MFT. Great value and quality all around.
