# What didn't Change from XM3: - Same sound signature and quality - Excellent Noise Cancellation - Great battery life and quick recharging # What Improved over XM3 - Slightly more comfortable headband and ear cushions - Touch Sensitivity on the earcup seems to have subtly improved # Good Addition but needs more work: - Supporting two bluetooth connected device. In my experience, sound quality took a hit when two devices were connected. Second device connection used to be hit/miss but since latest software update working flawlessly between my macbook pro and iphone. - Wearing detection - automatically pauses playback when headphone has been put off. In my experience, this had several false positives/negatives to the point that it was annoying. Perhaps a better motion sensor or software update can address this issue in the future. - Smart Talking - found this to be less useful/gimmicky and have turned it off. # Important Feature removed over XM3: - Support for AptX and AptX-HD removed in XM4 - thus only way to get hi-res streaming is to use LDAC codec - which is not supported in Mac and PCs, as well as iPhones. This may be deal breaker for some. Also LDAC is not supported when two bluetooth devices are connected. I'd imagine prosumers of the product would be quite disappointed in this omission. # Bottom-line: If you have an XM3, in my opinion there is little reason to justify an upgrade - I'd rather wait for XM5. If you have an XM2 or Bose QuietComfort 35 series, the upgrade would be worthwhile. ... More

There are a lot of things to like about these headphones. There are also a couple things that make me consider returning them. However, because B&H was having a sale and they were priced fairly lower than their normal price, I might consider keeping them. First and foremost, these are noise-cancelling headphones. Therefore, the noise-cancelling comes first and sound quality comes second. If you want amazing sounding headphones and plan to use them in a fairly quiet environment, then these really aren't for you. The sound and noise cancelling is great for my walk to work. I live and work in the city with train rails above ground, so it can get quite loud. Even my in-ear headphones couldn't cancel out as much as these can. There is some sort of white noise sound when no music or sound is playing, but it's one of those things where you will probably get used to it and once again, are worth it for people like me in the city. You will have to play with the equalizer in the app as I don't think the default sound is the best. Also, even as someone who loves soprano pop songs and wants super clear vocals, it can get ear-piercing with the default setup. I think I figured out something that works really well for my liking, though. The Bluetooth multipoint is interesting. For some reason, I expected it to be more like a mixer where it blends both sounds. Instead, it switches. It doesn't really work flawlessly for me. I had it connected to my personal Android phone and work MacBook Pro. Even when the MacBook Pro has been in my bag and closed before I even turn on the headphones, somehow they connect to the MacBook Pro as well as my phone. This can sometimes cause issues as it will not play sound from my phone as it thinks my MacBook Pro is using the audio. Additionally, I've noticed this happens if I have Zoom setup to use my XM4 mic, even when I'm not on a call. I wish I could, in the app, tap one or the other device to force it. As for comfort, these were terrible at first. Of course, everyone has different head shapes, so your mileage will vary. I have a large head and the force that these headphones clamp hurts after a while. After a few weeks, these have been fitting a tiny bit better, so maybe it just takes some breaking in. My ears touch the sides of the cups, so I guess my ears are large? I don't think I could wear these for like eight hours, but I can probably manage a couple hours. A few other things I've noticed: the auto-pause after taking off doesn't always work - sometimes it continues playing music. I don't use the touch sensors that much, but they work as advertised. I wish the custom button would let me switch between noise cancelling and ambient sound only - instead it switches between those two as well as off. I turned off the ambient sound when talking as it picked up when I was singing with the song. The hand to ear cup for temporary ambient sound is great and I use it almost every day. I wish I could turn off the voice feedback - when using Bluetooth multipoint, you'll be listening to music and then suddenly it lowers volume and second device connected. Overall, I like the headphones and if it wasn't for the clamping force and comfort, I would consider these the best. Who knows, it might be perfect for you! ... More

I got these headphones for video editing as well as music listening while traveling and they've caused me so much frustration it's almost impossible to articulate. The only other bluetooth headphones I own are Aeropex Aftershockz, which are bone conducting headphones used for working out. I love them and they pair to multiple devices so seamlessly and easily, I figured these Sony headphones would be far better for audio quality though for everything else that isn't work outs. The sound quality is nice and noise cancelling, but their blue tooth is horrendous in pairing with second device. I have them paired to my iPhone and Macbook Pro 16 inch 2019, and they will alwayd 100% of the time favor the MacBook Pro no matter what. I'll be walking blocks away and they're still trying to pair to my macbook so I cant hear anything on my phone, I'll toggle back and forth and it stilll chooses macbook. My macbook will be turned off and it still pairs with macbook, I just ended up forgeting the device on my app so that it never pairs with my macbook and using wires headphones for my macbook (which sort of defeats the purpose of owning these). Anyway, I thought this was the worst of it and decided after 3 weeks of owning them, I'd just live with it. But then past few days I've been trying to pair bluetooth speakers to my Macbook Pro and an unknown sound device keeps being prioritzed and either never allowing my speakers to connect, or worse, will let them play music for a bit and then disconnect favoring the unknown device. I was very confused and concerned as the unknown device was a large list of numbers and nothing I recognized. I finally decided to turn on my Sony Bluetooth headphones to see if it was them, and it was. So, essentially, my bluetooth headphones are turned off, disconnected, I have forgotten device on both the app and on my macbook pro for the headphones, yet the headphones are still first thing to connect when I turn bluetooth on, obviously not working, so then I can't listen through my bluetooth speakers. I use bluetooth mouse and keyboard, so now anytime I try to listen to audio on my macbook, I cannot bc the forgotten turned off, Sony Headphones are still connected. They are eternally connected and offer no options to forget them. Its crazy how seamless the device pairing is on my Aeropex, not a household name at all, and I own a lot of Sony for camera equipment and am familiar with the brand, but these headphone bluetooth integration is the worst thing I've ever experienced. ... If you Google “What are the best headphones to buy right now”, you will be given a long list of websites all giving their expert opinion. What seems to be most common is that most of these expert reviews point to the Sony WH1000MX4’s as being the ANC Headphone king. I have to agree. The most important factor to me is sound quality. I collect IEM’s so I believe that I know a quality sounding pair when I hear them. The Sony’s have exceeded all my expectations. The sound signature is balanced with rich punchy bass, clear mids and crisp highs. There’s absolutely no sign of sibilance. The MX4’s offer an inviting listening experience. You’ll want to pick them up put them on and enjoy. The Sony Headphone app allows you to customise the sound curve to your liking. For me they sound perfect right out of the box. What ever you’re go to music genre. The Sony’s elevate the experience. When first hearing Guns and Roses Knocking on Heavens door, I got a shiver down my spine. I’m not even a fan of Guns and Roses! At around £300 they ain’t cheap but like the old saying goes “you get what you pay for!” Compared to Apples offering the Sony’s are actually really good value for money and they come with a proper case, not one that looks like a training bra! Considering the amount of tech crammed into these cans they start to pull away from their peers in terms of value. They’re mind blowingly clever with the audiophile pleasing sound quality to go with the tech wizardry. The Active Noise Cancellation works very well blocking out any unwanted external noise. Set up is easy with the very customisable app. The touch controls are responsive and accurate. I could list all the amazing functions the MX4’s have but the review would be way too long. Let me just say if you like gadgets you’re in for a treat. There’s a 3.5mm cable for wired connection. I connected them to a cheap HI RES DAC that I own and again the sound quality went up another notch. Bluetooth sound quality is excellent but when connected to my iPhone the music piped to my ears isn’t full fat HI RES. That said the DSEE Extreme function in the app allows you to to boost compressed audio whilst streaming to sound like it has a higher bit rate. Very clever indeed. The competition is stiff with the likes of Bose and Sennheiser all offering similar priced options. The Apple AirPod Max’s may have the edge in terms of build quality but pound for pound they can’t match the Sony WH1000MX4’s for their sheer all round ability. Long live the King! ... More

The Sony Wh-100XM4 headphones have many features which is why I bought them, but the features are not flawless. The automatic music stop feature with a sensor that can tell when the headphones are taken off have worked a majority of the time, but occasionally (not often) the music keeps playing. The sensors on the earpieces that control volume, skipping to next track, or pausing music to chat with someone with the headphones on do work, but it's not an exact science-sometimes I have to gesture 2 or 3 times to get it to do what I want. The noise cancelling is good, but I expected a little better with all the hype. I've used an older different Sony noise cancelling headphones previously and thought the noise cancelling for lower frequencies was subpar so I thought these would be a big improvement but I can still hear people talk (in a doctors office) with the volume set to mid level. I've used them at a major airport outside with jets taking off and the noise cancelling of the engines is really good. I haven't actually been in a airplane in flight yet, but I'm expecting it to be good to excellent. I guess it is impossible to have complete noise cancelling based on the volume of outside noise-people yelling or banging noises can still be heard thru the headphones in noise cancelling mode. The bluetooth is flawless-has paired with all my devices and talking on my smartphone seems to be better with the headphones than on the phone's speaker and microphone as people I'm speaking with tell me they hear me very clearly. I also hear them more clearly with noise cancelling on. The headphones sound great when listening with hi-fi streaming on music apps like Deezer or Spotify. The headphones are fairly light and the ear padding is soft and comfortable. The battery does actually last as long as Sony advertises; on a full charge I have used it all day listening to music and taking phone calls. It charges quickly too. Overall, I'm not as impressed as I thought I would be but since I got it on sale it was worth the price. I'm expecting I'll be using it for years to come with Sony's reputation for quality. ... More

I previously had the Bose QC35 II and that battle was between those and the WH-1000XM3, I chose the QC35 II and had no problems with them other than some discomfort. Long story short they were stolen from me by my ex blah blah blah, I needed new headphones. So the battle again was between QC35 II and these, WH-1000XM4. Well I love them!!!!! The sound quality is amazing! The NC is great! With my QC35 I had to turn them all the way up just to block out the running water noise from my sink. With the 1000-XM4 half way does the trick! I love the equalizer option. I did prefer the buttons on the QC35, but the "touchpad" is still okay, I normally use my phone or watch to control. The comfort on the headband is a lot better IMO than the QC35 as well as the ear pads, so win. The connecting of 2 devices...................................it is not as seamless as the QC35 was. That was a flawless transition back and forth between my devices. This one...not so much. I also liked how the QC35 told me which devices it was connecting to, I have my 1000XM4's connected to my iPad, iPhone, and Apple TV, and it's a small pain trying to figure out which 3rd one is connected. But I'm glad of the option, I just wish it worked better. Other than that these are amazing and I would choose these again in heartbeat!! ... More

I purchased these about a month ago. This is my first foray into wireless noise canceling headphones in about five years, I am impressed with the improvements. The sound quality is simply terrific, approximately as good as a set of wired headphones of similar cost. The wireless link is reliable, no interference or dropouts noted though in fairness I usually use these with my phone which is never more than a few feet away. I purchased these in part to replace a set of headphones that I use when I cut my grass. That is a very challenging environment for noise reduction as it contains wide band noise from very low frequencies up to almost the limit of human hearing. The noise is also at a fairly high decibel decibel level, something like 90+dba at 1 m. The headphones knocks the mower noise down to a really surprising level, and even with the noise reduction working that hard the audio still sounds great. I also very much appreciate the touch features of these headphones. My experience with non-phone/computer gesture sensing has not been good. However these sense tap and swipe gestures very reliably. The headphones come in a small zippered case and include accessories such as an airplane adapter and hardwired cable. They charge in three hours or less, usually much less, from USB-C. Sony also has an app available for iOS and android that provides various settings for noise reduction, equalizer, and setting the function of a dedicated button on the headphones. I can't speak to the iOS version but the android version works well, I've had absolutely no issues with it. Overall I think these are a great choice, and well worth the price. ... More

These noise cancelers do a great job keeping ambient noise to a minimum (though I'm really surprised they didn't do much better than my AirPods Pro's when it comes to noise cancelling). My big gripe with these headphones is that if you're paired to one device and want to switch to another, you literally have to disconnect from the first device manually and then initiate connection to the other device. And while, yes, technically you can have 2 devices connected simultaneously (switching doesn't usually work as they advertise btw), I found that many times if I was connected to my Macbook Pro and iPhone at the same time but had put my computer away for the day and the headphones were last connected to the computer, that the headphones would not switch to my iPhone 13 Pro Max, even when I started playing music on that device (which is how it's supposed to know to switch devices). I'd literally have to go down to the office, open my Macbook Pro, manually disconnect the bluetooth and only then would the headphones switch to the phone. If I'd left my computer at the office the headphones literally wouldn't connect to anything else -- rendering them useless until I could get back to the computer and manually disconnect. This can be SUPER frustrating. At a bare minimum there needs to be a way, on the headphones, to clear bluetooth connections to free them up to connect to something else. ... More

Sound: The lows and mid-lows are strongly pronounced, which tends to happen with closed-back headphones. The result is a somewhat muddy soundstage, with mids through highs drowned out by the lower frequencies. Using EQ to slightly reduce the bass and raise the treble fixes this entirely, however. Noise Cancelling: Out of the box, noise cancelling is excellent. Once you've run the NC Optimizer feature, users universally report slightly increased white noise, and worse performance. This may be improved in a future firmware update. The effect is not unpleasant (and reduces pressure on your ears somewhat), so might be an intentional design decision by Sony to compensate for other complaints. Accessories/Other: The included charging cable is extremely short (3in/10cm), so you may need a longer USB-C cable for practical charging. The included case and male-to-male 3.5mm cable for corded use are excellent. Overall: I strongly recommend these headphones for their intended audience. If you're looking for broad soundstage and exceptional audio quality, you might want to look elsewhere (open-back headphones will always give you a better experience in that regard). If you're looking for active noise cancelling to reduce noise from office fans or loud commutes, these are great. ... More

These are not worth the price of £250. I have had them for 1 month now and I’m not sure if my is faulty or not; but I deeply regret getting these. The sound quality is not bad, but it lacks in volume and noise cancellation. My AirPods Pro are much louder and cancel noise much better than this. They also leak a lot of sound even if the volume is not too loud. And of course, my volume is always at its maximum capacity whenever I use them because they are simply not loud. Whenever I use my AirPods Pro, my volume is always low. Even in the tube, these are not good at cancelling the noise, again my AirPods do much better job in this aspect too. I did take them in a flight and they did good in cancelling the noise but then again, in a flight is usually quiet. My point is that if you have them in a very busy and loud atmosphere, they won’t do that well in cancelling noise (my AirPods do much better in this aspect). Nevertheless, they are very comfortable and I appreciate that they came with a storage case; also the silver colour is stunning, but I deeply regret getting them. I got these for their noise cancelling features as I am sharing the office and it can get a bit loud at times. They work great at removing the noise, but the sound quality is not as good as most reviews describe. The first thing I did was to equalize them, mostly increase the high frequencies, as they sound really muffling in the default settings. They sound decent after equalization, but not as good as other headphones I have. For example they can't even compete with an old, much cheaper, pair of HyperX Cloud Stinger I also got from Argos. In any possible settings I tried the HyperX are the clear winner by far in terms of sound quality. Both on my phone and PC (linux) I am using the LDAC codec from Sony, but to be honest I am not noticing any difference at all when compared with other codecs. When connected through the wire, the sound quality is significantly worst, which is really surprising as it should give the best possible quality. So yes they are nice and wireless and do a pretty good job at noise cancelling, but in no way these can be considered high sound quality headphones. They sound ok, especially if you listen to music with a lot of bass, but if you listen more like to jazz or classical music you mostly wished you bought another pair. ... More

It also lets in enough voice sounds so in the office I know if someone is trying to talk to me and I can hear train announcements even with music playing (again depending on settings). I wore them non-stop through the whole time (6 hrs) between airports (2) and planes (2) to see how long could I keep them on... they won... I took them off until I was on my way home because I didn't need them while driving...CRAZY COMFORTABLE! Battery life is sick! It was fully charged right out of the box and after playing with all the features and the 6 hr use, the battery ended up at 98% once I arrived home. Also, the feature of having them synced with 2 devices (phone and tablet in this case) was a feature I didn't know I would be so happy to have. Design is just gorgeous and fancy looking! I found Bose's previous-gen headphones much more comfortable than this pair. They just naturally seemed to fit my head, but I liked their ear pads better; the Sony ones are a little too soft for my taste. Out of the box, I found the QC35's sound to sound more natural, i.e., what I think the music is supposed to sound like. I had to fiddle with Sony's preset equalizer options in the app for a while until I found something I thought sounded normal. But I'm not audiophile, so I have no idea which produces a more accurate sound. I do prefer Sony's iPhone app to Bose's, though. There's a couple of functions I don't think I'll ever use, like spatial audio (you have to have a paid subscription to some obscure sites to even listen to that type of sound file), but it seems more useful overall. Demerits for no native iPad app, though. ... More

I recently took the plunge and purchased the XM4. Having never spent this much on a pair of headphones my expectations were high but fully fulfilled. I was impressed with the high build quality and functionality of the folding into a small case ideal for travelling. Super easy to set up with the app and a range of settings to play about with to optimise for your own usage and the sound quality is excellent. Having the ability to connect to 2 devices simultaneously is a nice feature I didn't know about until after purchasing, handy as I am frequently between my phone and laptop. The sound cancelling is brilliant for traveling on aircraft and also blocking out loud air condition, tv and other people. One issue I with the XM4 is the controls can be a bit awkward to use and take a bit of time to get used to. Apart from this, no other complaints with this product. Would recommend these to anyone who travels frequently or a noisy workspace to evade distractions ... More

I bought these in the Black Friday sales in November 2022. They are the first noise cancelling headphones that I have owned and wasn't sure what to expect. When you wear them you don't experience pure silence but do notice a significant drop in unwanted background noise. This is especially noticeable when you are listening to music. I mainly use these with a phone running Android 11 and downloaded the Sony Music Centre app and a sound equaliser app to get the best sound experience for me when playing music. The headband isn’t the most comfortable for me but isn’t bad enough to put me off. They are comfortable on my ears. I’ve had no problems connecting the headphones to my Windows 11 PC or phone. Overall I am happy with the sound quality and the noise cancelling ability of these headphones and would recommend them. ... More

These headphones are incredible!! They may seem quite pricey (or more reasonable if you’re looking at the Apple ones) but they are definitely worth every penny. The sound quality is fantastic and the noise cancelling is great if you are working in a noisy area. The headphones will detect when you are walking/running and you can programme them to be less noise cancelling - I have set this up for walking so you can still hear what is going on around you, and when you stop for a while they will switch back to noise cancelling automatically. The pairing with your phone is easy, there is an app for the headphones which you need to download and where all the features are accessed from. They are a comfortable fit and you can easily wear them for a few hours, they have never started to slip off when exercising either. Overall, I’d highly recommend these headphones, they look nice, have a great quality, sturdy case for travelling with them and the sound quality is unreal!! ... More

These are the best headphones I've ever owned: the sound quality is amazing, and the noise cancelling is much better than everything else I've ever tried. I have two bad critiques though: 1) It doesn't connect to my PS4. This might be a PS issue, but one would thing that a £300+ Sony product that offers bluetooth connectivity would connect to another £300+ Sony product that offers bluetooth connectivity. 2) The touch feature is great sometimes, but it doesn't offer all functionalities that I had on my older headphones, with buttons. With these headphones, other that volume control, I'm limited to going back to the beginning of the audio or skip it. This is a problem when I'm listening to podcasts, as sometimes I just want to go back a bit to listen to something again, or fast-forward to the bit where I had left off. Of course, I can still do that on my phone, but it was a lot more practical with buttons on the headphones. ... More
