These are the best headphones I've ever owned: the sound quality is amazing, and the noise cancelling is much better than everything else I've ever tried. I have two bad critiques though: 1) It doesn't connect to my PS4. This might be a PS issue, but one would thing that a £300+ Sony product that offers bluetooth connectivity would connect to another £300+ Sony product that offers bluetooth connectivity. 2) The touch feature is great sometimes, but it doesn't offer all functionalities that I had on my older headphones, with buttons. With these headphones, other that volume control, I'm limited to going back to the beginning of the audio or skip it. This is a problem when I'm listening to podcasts, as sometimes I just want to go back a bit to listen to something again, or fast-forward to the bit where I had left off. Of course, I can still do that on my phone, but it was a lot more practical with buttons on the headphones. ... More

I've owned a number of noise-canceling headphones over the years, and these are by far the best I've ever heard. At first, I thought the setup process for these headphones was overly complicated, but as I went through the process, I could hear the logic in the headphones adjusting to my listening environment, balancing atmospheric pressure on the diaphragms, and optimizing the noise canceling. The result is a well-balanced frequency equalization and noise canceling that far exceeds any other headphones I've heard. As for the microphone, it's designed to work with the side tone used for telephones, not for conference streaming apps; look at a gaming headset for streaming purposes. For pure listening enjoyment and the occasional phone calls, the WH-1000XM4 headphones are absolutely excellent! ... More

I Did a lot of research before I bought these headphones as I wanted a strong bass noise cancellation headphones. These headphones does not disappoint. Very high quality mids, tops and the bass is incredible. Very stable low range bass which does not distort the mids and tops (treble). The quality of the headphones itself is outstanding. The pads are soft and comfortable but my ears does sweat a little but it's a very small price to pay for quality sounds. The noise cancelling option is excellent, better than I expected. It does not cancel ALL noise which is a good thing I think and can hear low rumbling sound from a bus or train, some people chatting if they are speaking loud next to you. I would definitely recommend paying the high price for these headphones - what you pay is what you get! Go buy it, it won't disappoint you. Well done Sony! ... More

First off, the sound quality is phenomenal. Add to that the highly customizable settings in the app (EQ etc) and these make for an amazing pair of headphones. I won't comment much on ANC since I was not able to fully test them objectively, but subjectively they were just as good as others I have tried (B&W PX7, Bose NC 700, Sony XB900N). However, the reason I give this 1 star is for fit. They have used the same outer shell as older models (which is fine) but the placement of the magnet in the middle makes these unbearable after 40-45 mins. The magnet protrudes out in the middle which is just enough to push against my ear. I can't imagine how people with larger/protruding ears use them. There must be a reason for that placement, but the XB900N work just fine with a different design. Please consider this in your future design Sony - I have used the XB950BT, XB900N and love the sound quality but need the design to be more robust to include users outside the average individual. ... I've owned an AudioTechnica noise canceling headset for over 8 years and have been happy with their performance. However, because the earcups and headband leatherette has deteriorated considerably, I was in the market for a new pair. The Sony's were the highest rated on a number of websites I found, and they have not disappointed. Technology can change a lot in 8 years! The sony's have a companion app that shows you battery percentage, as well as a multitude of settings, including location-based sound profiles that adjust to environments you frequent. These pair are even great at drowning out a very loud coworker's voice (why I bought them), and last 5 hours with only a 10 minute charge! Very comfortable and the sound quality makes you forget you're in a noisy environment. Excellent battery life. Love them so far (used 1 day so far). ... More

I watched many headphone review over the past few months to help me decide, so I was convinced that these are the ones for me. The sound quality is amazing. I listen to all types of music so for me the first thing to consider was the sound quality over everything else. I'm not saying these are the best on sound (but second after the Apple AirPod Max), but for the price range is definitely the best. The mids and lows are well balanced. Battery life way over the advertised claim. I'm pulling out easy 35-38 hr with noise cancelling on). Wearing them is also comfortable throughout the day. Noise cancellation probably the best on the market right now... So overall for me, these are really well designed and built headphones with lot of cool features. Love it. Worth the money. I had the XM3 model, but wore them out. I looked at buying the new XM5, but didn't like the new headband and the fact that they didn't fold flat like the XM3, so decided to go for the XM4. The older ones were already excellent - but the XM4 has even better noise cancelling, and better battery life. Excellent audio quality, including 3D sound, very tweakable through the Sony Headphones app - and the noise cancelling is pretty much 100% - you can't hear anything outside of whatever you're listening to. I guess these are on the more expensive side of ANC headphones, but I don't think they can be beaten for quality. ... More

I've gone through a lot of headphones, earbuds, and such through the years. For various reasons, my past headphones have caused me ear pain, headaches, the works. My friends have raved about these headphones for years, but I was still skeptical. Was my search for the perfect headphones finally over? It turns out, yes, it was. These have been the first set of headphones that I can wear for hours on end that haven't given me a headache. I absolutely love wearing these at home, in my office, and while traveling, and I can wear them for hours on end without getting the sorts of pain I'd have with other types of headphones. On top of that, the battery life is great, and the bluetooth connection has been reliable. ... More

I had wanted these for a long time, so my expectations were pretty high, and I was not disappointed. Could drop to 4 stars if the Tap Controls are important to you. They are a little hit and miss, but I use my phone or laptop mostly. On noise cancelling, it is better than I expected. You can still hear muffled outside noises with the music off, but but it isn't distracting during podcasts and when music is playing I don't notice outside sound at all. Build quality is really good. I love the texture of these headphones, they feel very luxurious. Battery life is great and charging is fast. I'm glad I bought them and if someone gave them to me as a gift I would be very excited! ... More

I’ve used these headphones for a month and they are by far the best noise cancelling headphones for the money. The XM5 model may have slightly better noise cancelling capabilities but not worth the extra money. Plus, the XM4’s fold up to be more compact. One negative is because of Argos accepting returns of opened packaging and reselling it without having the manufacturer review the item. My headphones had previously been paired to someone else’s phone and PlayStation according to the app. Headphones appear to work ok.

These have rekindled my love of listening to music. Loud. They look similar to other headphones in this price range (unassuming, maybe a bit bland) and seem to be quite sturdy. The case is good. They are certainly comfortable with a good seal around the ears. The touch controls are easy to use, but the best 'tech' features are related to the ambient sound control, where the music and noise cancelling will pause when it detects you speaking or if the headphones are removed. The sound quality is very good and well balanced - they don't artificially increase bass frequencies and there is great separation between highs, mids and lows, making cymbals, high-hats, etc, stand out nicely. Overall, very impressed. ... More

At this point it doesn't matter how the headphones sound. if it is a product that you pay about $300 to have it in working condition only for 10 months then it doesn't worth it. looking at the Sony community page I understand this is an issue faced by multiple customers. The bland, unacceptable response given by Sony is that these are not covered under standard warranty. Not even a mention if this type of damage is even fixable. It is not just one hinge. The plastic plate that keeps the hinge coming out of the ear phone part broke into two and now hangs by the wire. same part on the left side is all cracked, just a matter of which side first. $300 after 10 months $0. Even if they repair, I think it is going to be $50 or more. I hate this headphone now. ... More

I should qualify "when it's working". I understand in high radio environments, bluetooth headphones can receive interference from other radio devices. Listening at home, general street life it works excellent. I bought these to use during a flight and it was a joy. (I spoke to a family member through these with the noise cancellation on just before a flight. The family member said "I hope that screaming baby isn't on your flight. I replied "what screaming baby?") However, in the airport environment, the noise cancellation kept turning itself off randomly. I assume it was due to radio interference, but it should be a bug, not a feature. I will keep these as I'm not often in that environment, but buyer beware. You MAY have issues with connectivity. ... Needed over the ear noise cancelling headphones for work I have sensitive ears and a pointy head so the headband needs to be really soft. I tried these on in Currys and the 2 previous models before, plus ones from Bose, Dre, Samsungs brand (Can't remember the name) Goji and JB. These are noticeably lighter, less tight on the head and the head band is very soft on my head. These are definitely the most comfortable over the ear headphones out there. I don't have much of a comparison for sound cancelling but it still surprises me when I turn it on, the bass is rich battery life is good, and it's the quickest connecting device to my phone or computer. Bought these as a replacement for an older set of Bose noise cancelling headphones. Mated to my Iphone 12 without problem. Sound quality is quite good. Noise cancelling is amazingly better than the old Bose. There is an annoying alert noise whenever the phone loses it's sound source. Also I was at first disappointed with the plugged in sound on my old Ipod, but reversed the cord and it was fine, not sure why that is a thing? The comfort is a little less than the Bose, but that may be because they are heavier and have new stiffness. Overall quite pleased with these headphone and would recommend them. ... More

I was hoping these would be the wireless versions of my Sony MDR-7506 with active noise cancellation. My research pointed me to these & the Apple Airpods Max. The 7506 are perfect for long session and was hoping these would be an improvement, but I'm not quite sure. They're pretty comfortable, but sometimes after an hour can be uncomfortable due to the physical headphones, or the sound of active noise cancellation. I have AirPods Pro & am blown away by the noise cancellation & audio quality. I was losing focus having to work from home in a house without a dedicated office space. These headphones have greatly increased my focus by filtering out background noise, moreso than I expected. The app has a bunch of fancy features, but the most useful is being able to pair to multiple devices. I use it to pair to my laptop for meetings and my phone for music, and it switches between them pretty seamlessly. The auto-pause and auto-off feature when headphones are removed and not used is really nice too.

Good quality sound and isolation for music listening, with acceptably high volume levels. Be sure to install the Headphones app if you use it with a mobile device, it grants access to a slew of options including equalizer settings. Battery hasn't even reported under 100% yet, I've listened to several hours of music and several more of podcasts. Is perfectly comfortable to wear. One particular negative note is that it can get hot and sweaty where the cups seal against your head. This is to be expected, but worth noting if you listen for extended periods. I would not recommend this set for working out. Cleans off easily however. ... More
