Over the years, I've purchased dozens of headphones for my studio. The ones that stand out are the ones that last for many years and retain their audio quality. I've found that Sony is superior to most with respect to quality, reliability and longevity. My oldest set of "cans" are the SonyV6's (precursor to the 7506), which are 23 years old and still look and sound new!!! I no longer buy Audio-Techinica because the foam they use for their headbands and ear "muffs" deteriorate the fastest and loose high frequency response over time. AKG's are quite reliable and replacements parts are easy to find. The majority of my clients prefer the Sony 7506 for tracking. I would say that the Sony 7506 is the "Shure SM-58" of headphones. You don't have to spend a lot and they are reliable workhorses. The Sony 7506 is the best buy in headphones. ... More

I like these headphones and sound quality. I use them for recording in the studio. The biggest problem I have is the cord. They get tangled fast and the curly cord they can stretch long and they don't seem to go back to its original state. The mini plug adaptor option is nice but its actually the worst feature I hate. They get lost. And when you need them the most you cant find them. They would have made it the opposite. The big plug should be the default plug and the big plug to mini plug as the optional adaptor. And the last part are the air cushions. They get worn out fast but fortunately you can buy replacements at B&H. Overall its OK to have in the studio. ... More

Great professional headphones, very strong base, and excellent high frequency response. Own two pair of these, they are used in Church Worship sound monitoring, and 60's Rock Band as sound engineer. Very strong performers. I recommend the Garfield Softie Earpad covers to protect the ear pad covers, they also make the headphone more comfortable to wear. I wear the MDR-7506 and MDR-7509HD's sometimes up to 6-7 hours daily with no fatigue. Expertise: Have over 30 years experience in the industry. Problems Encountered: None at all. I was compelled to write a review. These Headphones have blown my mind literally! I'm not sure where to start, they are amazing. I'm not one for writing reviews, but after this purchase I had to. I would be doing sony a disservice if I didn't tell everyone just how great they are. These things reproduce sound in a way I have never heard before. Im not a big name producer by any means, but after one listen you will be able to appreciate music in a whole new way. I can't seem to take them off. I find myself trying to perform everyday activities with these attached to my head. They are very comfortable and they play incredibility loud and clear. if you are on the fence, please go ahead and jump! You can and will hear a difference between what audio device you have hooked up to them. They sound good with my Blackberry, great with my Ipod, and phenomenal with my Macbook. ... More

Sound and looks are good, however, the build quality is pretty bad. I used them on my mixer perhaps 4 times to check the sound while recording live events. Apart from that only on my laptop on my table. After perhaps 2 weeks of use, the rubber protection on the thin cables that are attached to the speakers exposed the copper cable. So I was worried all the time, that the cable might come off completely. I always handled them very carefully. Now after 2 years of using them the ear pads are starting to disintegrate completely, the leather imitation is falling of, the foam coming through etc. so I can basically through them away. These headphones might be good for someone who changes his phone frequently. For daily use not recommended. ... More

These are the BEST headphones, hands down, ears up. I originally bought these for the sole purpose of enjoying crisp clean beats, and distortion free Reggae. I was blown away that not only can I hear things in these songs I never heard before, but they are also light, and act as noise cancelling!!! I had a couple pair of $300 headphones including some of the leading "rapper" brands. I returned them and decided to try these based on reviews. Blown. Away. I realized that when I have them on, I immediately can't hear my co-workers arguing about reports, chewing food with their mouths open, or talking out loud to themselves. I was gonna quit, until I got these. These headphones will literally save your career. ... More

Picky with my Muzik. I've had these for about 8 years from B&H NYC store, never failed. My workhorse. I actually compared these to ($ Grado, Sennheiser & AKG). I use these on MP3s, iPods, Computers, as a monitor in recordings, just about anything related to sound. I would not settle for a mediocre headphone, so I went to B&H as they have a listening station with headphones of all sorts. I listened to all, one by one. These stood WAY out for: 1-Acoustics, 2-Fidelity 3-Bass/Treble peak, 4-Definition of sounds, 5-Comfort. Simply The Best (IMHO).My thoughts: I hope Sony NEVER discontinue these, as whenever my current pair of MDR-7506 die, I hope to be able to buy (The Same MDR-7506) again. Won't buy another pair now because there is no sign of these ever failing even after about 8 years- That's Right! ... More

got a pair of these because they were recommended to my by a friend with lots of studio experience. i soon understood why they are so popular. they didn't change the sound from the recording. after four years i bought another pair. i can tell a slight difference in sound from the originals, which to my ear sound slightly fuller. i did have the originals on at high volumes for a solid week to see how they'd respond. no issues and after giving them many different burn-in tests, i'm still satisfied. i do recommend the extra deep earpads. they are much more comfortable than the originals (careful when you put them on). well worth the price! ... I use this headphone primarly on my bicycle for listening to music: I've tested around 10 different headphones (AKG, Beyer, Philipps, etc.) and it's by far the best: closed (so that you don't hear car noises), very comfortable and a very-well defined sound. Perhaps it could be better with slightly more bass to compensate the (quite weak actually) wind noise. I also use it my humble home studio: especially when recording (so comfortable) and mixing. It is a good reference when you want to compare your mix from your speakers to headphone. I would definitely buy one again if needed. I actually did, the first I bought was 18 months ago and eventually had a bad contact problem at the end of the cord. This is not surprising since I use it everyday, stick the coord with my mp3 player in my pocket, etc. I know simply use it at home with no problem at all. ... More

These are perfect! They are over-ear, so you hear what the mic is recording and nothing else. They are very comfortable. The cord is coiled, so when I am shooting video I don't have to worry about wrapping and tying the cord, or just having it drag on the ground. It has the single wire, not two coming off the headset. It comes with the adaptor for use on any device (sounds great with iPod). And the kicker is they FOLD, while not feeling flimsy at all. It comes with a carry bag. I love these headphones, and they don't cost too much. Plus, they can be REPAIRED! It comes with an exploded view diagram of replacement parts... wow... this is unheard of in post-modern days. ... I bought these to have for an 18-hour car ride. They sound very clear - I'm hearing things in the music that I've never noticed before. They are so comfortable that I fell asleep wearing them several times. They do block out some background noise in a normal setting (just people talking) but don't expect to hear your own music clearly over the car's stereo. The long coiled cord can be a little unruly when just listening to an iPod but the stretch does keep them from coming unplugged easily. The plug is straight and the molding around the plug will fit through the hole for the headphones jack in an iPhone Otter Box. The pouch they come with is handy and the headphones fold nicely to fit into it. ... More

I shopped for the MDR-7506 at the recommendation of a friend who uses them for studio work. I now know why, because they are unbeatable for an accurate reproduction of the sound without adding any strange effects. I like them much better than my Bose Tri-Port On-Ear headphones. Based on another reviewer's recommendation, I did play them for about 200 hours at different volumes and a wide variety of music to burn them in. Some say that's not necessary or is mythical, but I am certain that it really loosened up the low-end bass--amazingly. Maybe I over-did it, but I'm very happy and think I'll get another pair and leave them as-is. These are used in many studios and will be a great addition to your collection. Check it out, Jodi Foster uses them as a radio host in the movie, The Brave One. They are comfortable, reliable, and it doesn't take a lot of power to drive them. marcifer ... More

I purchased these to make video work on my MacBook Pro more comfortable than when using earbuds, as well as to enjoy my iTunes library. The MDR-7506 headphones are a total success in all regards. Very comfortable, even with the original vinyl earpads (I haven't installed the sheepskins yet). Bass is quite adequate for my needs. And as others have noted, definition of midrange and highs is excellent. The carrying case in this kit also is high quality, and seems stiff enough to protect the headphones against serious knocks should I take them anywhere. I'm now enjoying re-listening to my music collection, since these Sonys are revealing subtleties in the music I wasn't hearing with my good-quality earbuds. There are indeed plenty of excellent reasons so many professionals have made these their go-to headphones. ... More

Nothing wrong with the sound. Can be uncomfortable when wearing for long periods, but that might just be my sensitive ears. I experience this with other over the ear sets I have. For shorter durations (1/2 hr-3/4 hr) I can forget I have them on. I use these on my imac for watching video, and they really bring sound from Nat Geo or Nova specials to life. Since some of these can run up to 2 hours, I do find I need to get them off for a few minutes at some point. All in all, a good set at a reasonable price point. ... More

Clear, clean sound without any coloration. There's a reason that these are the industry standard in film/TV production, not least because they are comfortable enough to wear for several hours straight. Nor do you get ear fatigue from them. As for music, I've mixed band recordings with them while on the road, and the mixes play perfectly on my Genelec monitors. The only downside is that it's fairly easy to lose the 1/8" to 1/4" screw-on adapter. Which BTW is a brilliant bit of design.

I had been looking around for a great set of headphones for quite sometime. I had been considering such brands as Audeze, Telefunkin and Master & Dynamic. The big problem for me is it's almost impossible to try before you buy and other headphones I was looking at are $400+ (and that's a lot for something I'm not certain I'm going to like!!!). But then, I came to my senses and realized I should just get another pair of Sony MDR-7506 Headphones. I had a set of these about 15 year ago and loved them. I don't recall what happened to them, but I remembered how great they sounded. They're also so much more budget friendly. Once I received them, I plugged them in and listened to some music and they sounded just as great as I remembered. Crystal clear, accurate sound. That's why I want from a set of headphones, and that's exactly what I got with these. ... More

I got these after trying many others because of so many good reviews. They really do sound great, very neutral clear and natural. I use them mostly for monitoring the main mix while jamming in a band on electronic drums. Sometimes the whole band wears them for a silent rehearsal. They do seem a bit flemsy though. Sometimes The cups swivel into reverse position when picking them up and the external wires on the earpiece seems risky, almost snagged them a couple times, but as long as you're careful they will last. After trying them a while I bought 2 more pairs for when people come that don't have their own so I know we're all hearing the same mix. A couple friends liked them better than what they had so they got their own too. ... More

This Sony offering is lightweight, comfortable, covers 'my' ears and the integrated cable has a respectable reach. However, I'm not too crazy about coil cords as they invariably get tangled, and I would prefer the headband to be just a tad more cushioned for my bald head. Likewise, the isolation from background noise isn't that great for my taste. Frankly, I can't think of a more subjective and totally individualized component than a set of headphones. You can read specifications until you're blue in the face but until you try them on your head, and with your ears, you'll just have to deal with potential returns. Overall, these are more than adequate although I'll likely bump it up a notch. ... More

I'm a voiceover artist and for years have used these headphones in every major recording studio I've worked in. They are super comfortable. There is no noise leakage, so when you are doing a voiceover via phone patch, or ISDN, your mic won't pic up the director's voice. The sound is very clean and not colored. Nice high end, and the bottom end is tight. You don't need to crank the volume up with these up, either. Highly recommended for voiceover professionals and others who desire pristine quality sound, in a very well made package.
