I am currently a Nikon still shooter. I purchased the A7SII a year ago hoping to use it for stills and video. I loved the low light capability but the battery life, quickly changing the focus point, poor autofocus and color rendition on the A7S2 made that camera a no go for me. I sold the A7S2 and went back to Nikon D5's for stills and Panasonic GH5 for video I am still searching for a useable pro camera for both stills and video and the the A7Riii seemed to address the A7S2 weak points for me so I ordered it immediately. Early testing so far has been quite positive and I am learning new features. I do a lot of portraits and headshots. The face and eye detection is wonderful for still photography it seems to lock in on the subject's eyes every time. I had to do some online research on how to make this feature work it is not covered adequately in the manual. It works differently in single focus vs continuous autofocus I use the Sony 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 lenses and they make the camera quite front heavy so I invested in the Sony vertical grip. It works great and the camera is now balanced but of course a lot heavier almost similar to my Nikon D5 I am very happy with the color and overall the images from the A7Riii both photo and video. The battery life is good, it is easy to change focus and the camera focuses quickly especially for still photography. I am still testing the focusing for video. Right now it is good and there is several options in the menu that can be tweaked for focus. The manual does not explain the implications of changing the settings so it is try and testing. One other area I am looking to improve on is the flash compatible with this camera. My options seem very limited right now . I hope Profoto introduces an A1 Sony flash sooner rather than later. Overall I am very happy I purchased this camera. ... More

I'm a professional. I've been shooting Canon since I went digital in 2005. I was waiting a long time for this camera to come out in the hopes that it could become my primary camera. I'm still testing it. I am primarily a studio shooter. Everything I do for work is tethered. I have previously been using a 5D3. Ok, file quality is pretty amazing. Much better than the canon, both noise levels and resolution. In all fairness to Canon, the 5D3 is quite old. Eye detect AF is pretty great, but it is definitely not perfect. There are many instances when it does not work, when it seems like it should. Also, there are a few times when the camera just doesn't focus. Buttons are hard to find/press. 55 1.8 is incredible, as I hoped it would be. It's an exciting system, and I will give it more time. I have not really used it in the studio, which I need to do. Tether is much better than A7r2 but still a little slow. Could be my computer, could be settings. Shooting tethered to Slower memory card (95MBS UDHC 1 or whatever it's called) slowed down tether a lot. Great that you can save to card and computer. Uncompressed raw is huge, 80MB! Makes it hard to use when you typically shoot a couple of thousand images during a big job. I have really enjoyed using it for my personal work- kids around the house, etc. It's amazing for that. Have not tried video. I wish there was a way, and maybe there is, to quickly jump from single shot center point AF to continuous Eye detect AF. two programable buttons would be great. Custom modes on mode dial only register the first menu of camera settings, that's annoying. A small raw file would be nice. Wifi would be useful if you could convert a raw file in camera, but you can't. All in all a great camera. I hope I can make it work as my primary. ... More

In general the Sony a7Riii is a good camera, with an excellent image quality, good auto-focus, and lots of good features. A few negative points: - the connection port covers are made of cheap plastic, and I doubt they would hold any rain. - In general the weather sealing is poor, when compared to an older Nikon D7100. - As several reviewers already mentioned, the menu system is mediocre. Sony lacks user interface engineers capable of producing a user-friendly menu system. - the Sony software in general is bad. The Imaging Edge Desktop is mediocre, and quite worse that Nikon's software mess. - the user manual is simply bad. The manual tells you what the options are and how to set them, but does not inform the user how the different settings work, and how they interact. - the battery charger comes with a cheap cord, which is also quite short, and when plugged into a regular height wall plug the cord is too short for the charger to sit flat on the floor. A shame for such an expensive camera. None of these points are a deal-breaker, but are an annoyance to be taken into account when considering this camera. It will also make me consider whether to continue with Sony when time to upgrade comes. For a kit lens, the 24-70mm f/4 lens is quite good, but not great. Distortion is considerable, but Lightroom, Sony Image Edge, and Capture One (Sony) are able to fix it. ... More

I consider myself a prosumer enthusiast (kids, portraits, sporting events, street, landscape, macro, 'the family event photographer') and couldn't be happier with my decision to pre-order on announcement day. Camera easily tackles all that I ask of it and then some. Blown away by image quality and customization possibilities. Please don't spend $3,000 on a camera and complain about the menu system. Take an hour or two and read the online Help Guide and Start Manual. Once you customize MyMenu, Memory Modes 1-3, the Function Display and the Customizable Buttons, you'll hardly ever go into the menu system again. I setup Dial Memory Mode 1 for portrait settings, Mode 2 for street settings and Mode 3 for sports settings and works perfectly switching between the various settings for each style. Plus the ability to temporarily change most of the shooting settings by depressing one of the customized buttons via the Reg Cust Shoot Set feature adds an extra level of versatility I wasn't expecting. Don't do much video other than basic so won't take full advantage but at least I know it's there. I do agree that lack of in-camera time lapse and in-camera pixel shift are negatives, though at this stage, I'm willing to give Sony the benefit of the doubt and assume they timed the camera's release to match the D850 and will tie up these and other loose ends with a firmware upgrade once more bugs are uncovered. ... I've been a Canon shooter for over 10 years and have been very happy with my 5D Mark IV for portraits and macro work. Also have many lovely Canon lenses. On a whim, I rented the Sony A7RIII for a weekend along the Northern California Coast. I used the Metabones V lens adapter for my Canon lenses. After that weekend, it took me about 1 month before I bit the bullet. Why?? The landscape images I had from this camera were just too lovely! I also was able to crop in sooooo much and still have a very clean image! Other things I loved: eye AF, tilting LCD, size, 10 FPS, and in body stabilization. I also love how well it works with my Canon lenses and have been using it as my main body for architecture and landscape shots while I use my Canon for people and more close up nature. Many things I would change on it, however, including: touchscreen functionality (just BAD), WiFi transfers to iPhone (this is just embarrassingly impossible), and tilting screen range of motion (would be nice to get more angles including out to side). Also don't get the sense that it's as weather sealed as the big rivals. All in all, I'm so glad have a beautiful partnership between two amazing cameras. ... More

I've owned the original A7R since launch in late 2013 if I recall correctly, love that camera and the results, even though the autofocus in low light and some unexpected camera lockups started to bother me more and more. I've tried the A7R IV for a week and was so impressed about everything in it, better grip, better battery life, better viewfinder, etc. Though there was one thing that I couldn't get used to it, maybe because the higher megapixels count (or something else), there is a noticeable drop in dynamic range, both in shadows and highlights. On my original A7r I could always underexpose by two or three stops and recover the shadows very clean. The A7r IV comes back with much more noise and blown out white pixels depending of the case. Well, after this I decided to try the A7R IIII as I had the Rx1r 2 for some years and was very familiar on how the sensor performs. I couldn't be happier, everything I enjoyed about the Mark IV is present and the latitude of the raw images is much better, granted you lose some sharpness when zooming 600% but even that is negligible depending on the lenses at use. The only thing I miss from the IV is the multiple crop factors when shooting raw, while maintaining the full area masked and being able to bring it back upon development. Wow, that was longer than expecting. Hope that helps any other photographers. Warmest regards. ... More

AF Improvements vs the a7R II are huge - this camera is faster to focus and the eye-aftracking works REALLY well even with adapted lenses. Overall ergonomics and usability are excellent - the joystick for focus point movement greatly helps the usability of this camera. And touch screen to move focus point helps too. Photographers with bigger hands or using larger lenses may still find the grip and general balance to be lacking, especially if coming from a large DSLR. I appreciate the smaller size and the fact that I can throw on a small awesome prime, like the 28 or 55 and have an exceptionally portable system. Image quality is class leading and the pixelshiftfunction works to greatly increase the detail- I thought it was going to be a gimick but it turns out to be genuinely useful. Dual card slots, battery life that rivals current DSLRS on the market plus 4k video with pro level recording features all adds up to one of the best cameras and one of the best value cameras in any category - on the market today. The Sony a7Riii is just a terrific camera. It has so many ways to customize it that it can change almost instantly from a landscape camera, into a super high-speed sports/wildlife camera, a low-light camera, or a portrait camera, or a video camera, with just a touch of a button or two. People like to complain about the Sony menu system, but I found that if you really take some time to study the system and practice and work with it, it is super fast and easy. Also, you can create your own favorites menu for the items you actually need. The RAW landscape files I create with it are almost too good, right out of the camera. They are so sharp, with super dynamic range and color, that I find that often I need to turn down saturation and clarity in Lightroom. Otherwise people think that I have over Photoshopped them, even though they are just the untouched files. Portraits are dead-on sharp, with a push of the [customized] eye-detect button. I thought this might be too heavy for me to carry around with the 24-240 mm lens, but it is not. ... More

By now, you've probably read enough to know all the specs and positive reviews of the a7r III -- and it's all true. About 2 months after I bought this, the a7r iv was announced, but I don't care -- to me, this camera has everything you could ever want and then some -- I had no buyer's remorse about not waiting. (When the iv comes out, the price will probably drop on the iii, making it an even better deal.) I didn't buy it with the kit lens; instead I got the Tampon 28-70 zoom, which is faster and had looked as sharp as anything in the images (video and still) I saw online. I haven't been disappointed. The real reason I thought my review would be helpful is that I just wanted to say that the Messenger camera bag that came with this bundle was a wonderful surprise. It's beautifully made, and right now I have my a7riii (with the Tamron attached) on one side and my NEX-7 (converted for infrared) with its kit lens on the other side. The extra pockets conveniently hold everything I need them to. While a messenger-style bag may not be the most obvious choice as a camera bag, I love walking around with this on my shoulder and having everything I need convenient. It's REALLY WELL MADE and I'm glad I chose this particular bundle. ... More

I bought this camera for my high-resolution applications in shooting portraits (commercial, beauty, and fashion) after jumping ship to Sony recently. I waited very patiently and switched to Sony by getting my first Sony Alpha, which was the Sony Alpha a9. To have this camera for my higher-resolution needs, it is SUCH a pleasure. I had the privilege of testing out Sony through a Sony a7R and a7S that my friend let me borrow. Both cameras were incredible for their respective purposes, but had room for much improvement. Then came the Sony a9, which felt the most like DSLRs that I was used to. However, I needed more resolution for my commercial & editorial portraits. Then came the Sony A7R3. The Sony A7R3 renders my shots with incredible dynamic range, low noise, incredible sharpness, and vibrant, rich colors. It's a cut above anything I've ever used. If you are upgrading from the previous versions, you will find relief in its much improved ergonomic and form factor. (hint: joystick, dials, viewfinder, menu organization, dual card slots, REAL BATTERY, etc). For those of us who have used or also have a Sony a9, this is a great followup. The only noticeable difference is the quick-change dials on the left side of the a9 for focus modes & shootings, which are regrettably absent on the Sony A7R3 (which is capable of 10fps bursts at 42MP!). Combining this with my Distagon 35/1.4Z and Sonnar 55/1.8Z lenses, this team has made my camera x lens goals come true. I have yet to experience the Pixel-Shift feature (which I will test when I go out on my Spring expeditions in California) and the Anti-Flicker shooting feature (which I will test out when I continue my #AstralProjectionByJaimeChan series), but I am eager to see soon! I'm so glad I waited until now to get Sony. :D ... More

All of this traveled from New Jersey to Los Angeles sliding in the box and crashing from side to side. That's probably why the box was partially open. I had to buy and study an after market book to learn about all of the camera's capabilities and how to use them. I took the camera and 2 lenses, a 28 mm f/2 and an 85 mm f/1.8, to my local car museum. The lighting is best described as available cave. With the camera set to ISO 3200 and a fast lens mounted, the camera's ability to produce well exposed images was more than surprising. Where there was even lighting on the cars, the exposures produced very usable images. Where the lighting was uneven, the exposures accurately depicted that fact. The images were tack sharp. It was almost like shooting Kodachrome again. On the down side, though, is that the controls are too easily accessed by accident. The display button was too easily invoked as I gripped the camera, and I found myself staring at the camera settings in the chimp screen instead of the scene that I wanted to capture. This was also true of the exposure compensation dial. Another irksome issue was that every once in so often I found myself looking at a calendar instead of the image that I had just recorded. Despite the fact that the images produced were sterling, sharp enough to cut a steak, the fiddliness of the controls is the reason that my copy of the camera rates only 4 stars. ... More

I bought the Sony F/1.8 85mm after that but hardly use it although the bokeh is definitely looks better. The speed is simply better than any DSLR camera I have been using. However, keep in mind your memory cards must be at least 90 MB/s and better to have better response in shooting. However, even at 90 MB/s you still could feel the slow writing process. If you are doing a highspeed shooting it could fill the buffer in no time. Since the SD cards drop to mostly half the price on those newer 100 MB/s writing sdcard and I am going to try few of them. Last year they are mostly around $200 range even for 64 GB and currently you could get 256GB for $99 with superfast writing. Not sure if I want to go for A7RIV since both of them are pretty much the same according to most professional reviewers excluding the megapixels. If you feel A7RIV is too much for your budget, you woudn't regret buying this one. Good job Sony! ... More

I bought this camera to satisfy my need for a B Camera which would be the second angle during my documentary shoots. It needed to match my FS7 A Camera. I shoot both in SLog3/SLog3Cinegamut3 and I usually only have to tweak the A7RII! footage slightly in contrast and saturation to match the A Camera! I also chose the A7RIII because of its beautiful images in Still mode! Yes I switched from Canon... I chose the A7RIII over the A7R because of the still resolution and large file size for large prints. I needed full-frame for my architectural jobs - room to move my Canon TS lenses around the sensor! I love my A7RIII. So far there are no downsides... Ill repost if I find any. ... More

I switched from the a6500, and this blows that out of the water in terms of speed in the menu system, and general functionality (My biggest reason for not buying a a7rii). The joystick is a nice bonus, my favorite part being that when pushed in it's default function is to center focus, no matter what focus area you have selected! - SUPER USEFUL The viewfinder is outstanding. Coming from the a6500, it feels like upgrading from 1080p hd home tv, strait to IMAX. THE CONS Theres not many... But one thing I noticed immediately, compared to the a6500, is that the doors covering the charging ports etc. are plastic and have a one of those anchors that keep it strung to the camera(In provided picture)... Totally okay, but I LOVED the way that the metal a6500 doors were hinged to the body- very well built, and sturdy. Still no way to import into lightroom without using script, but that's okay for now! (Can anyone help me?) I'm not sure how to turn on the touch to focus? - maybe I just need to dig a bit deeper in the monolithic menu system. Anyways I couldn't be happier with the camera, unless of course they'd come out with a reasonably priced vertical grip, BUT I digress... The Image capability of this camera is outstanding, the speed is INCREDIBLE for the size of files it handles, and every little detail has been improved over the a7rii. If you're waiting for something to tip you over the buying point.. DON'T -- It's well worth the price and more. ... More

I started with the A7, upgraded to the A7rii and just upgraded to the A7riii and have no regrets. Each camera was well worth the purchase and the upgrade. The A7riii improved focusing system, better battery life and 10 frames per second shot rate were enough for me to upgrade, as I shoot a lot of sports. The wider dynamic range and improved low light capabilities are welcomed to, but not nearly as noticeable in the type of photography I'm involved with. Smaller things like a better EVF, PC sync port, and a touch screen do improve my workflow vrs the A7rii. I was originally a Nikon shooter, and still use (and love) my D3 on occasion, but for anyone considering this camera vrs a traditional DSLR, you will not be disappointed in the Sony A7riii. Now with 10 fps, good battery, and dual card slots it rivals professional DSLR's and I would highly recommend it. What you need to give real thought to is lens selection. Sony's "professional" GM and G lens are big and heavy, negating most of the advantageous smaller body design of the A7riii. Sony also has a growing number of well reviewed full frame e'mount lenses which which are smaller and lighter and make for a terrific travel kit when paired with the A7riii. They are often less expensive too. The ability to "customize" this camera to use, is an additional advantage it has over the traditional DSLR. If you buy this camera, I do not think you will be disappointed. ... More

Make no mistake, this is no consumer dumbed down piece of equipment. My first impression of this camera was I now have to learn 130 menu items which is about double that of my old a7RII. of course such an expansion means more control and flexibility. And, Sony fixed everything most of us complained about, like longer battery life, twin SD cards, faster more accurate focusing, touch screen and several other features too numerous to list here. Since I just got my a7RIII, I really have not put it through its paces. From what I have done, it appears to take better videos and more accurate color on stills. It is well worth the upgrade from the II in my opinion. ... More

Everything arrived exactly as expected. I love the camera and am looking forward to getting more experience and taking it to some great scenic places. Already much better at focusing on faces than my A7s. I was able to get some great photos of children in my family that were in focus due to the face tracking and the many frames per second. If I were to order this again, I would order without the Accessories kit and order the items I wanted separately. Mostly because of the grip extension which is far too expensive for something that makes it impossible to mount the camera on a tripod without removing it and is nothing but a piece of plastic that makes the grip side about an inch taller. I have fairly large hands but I would leave the $115 grip extension out of the order and add the screen protector instead at a much lower $29 price. ... More
