I sold my nikon d800e to buy the a7rii, manly because of focus. I don't like to be tied to lens system. I have some lenses that I really like to use from many different systems. This camera allows me to use them all. Hasselblad V lenses, nikon lenses, Leica lenses. With the electronic viewfinder and focus assist (little digital zoom) I can nail focus almost every time. Like the size and weight of this camera with Leica lenses. Battery runs out faster them my nikon but not as fas as I imagine. The downsides for me are: lack of lossless uncompressed raw file (in 14bit) and the menu. I would like the viewfinder to have a way to put my prescription on it so I don't need to use glasses to photograph (like nikon DK-17). Really enjoying it! ... More

I moved from a canon DSLR with multiple L lenses to the Sony A7RII primarily for improved size and weight considerations. But wow, what I fantastic camera, small, light, Image Quality is well beyond my expectations. I thought I would miss the L glass (I decided not to go with the metabones adapter), but the sony Zeiss lenses are capable in most instances. Yes, the battery life is a bit short, but spend the extra $50 bucks , but a couple of batteries and you are good to go... The OSS in the body is an excellent feature, high ISO shots are very clean ! You will NOT be disappointed in the gem, even in auto mode, the camera is right on with respect to metering, ISO, etc. I am not a professional, just an advanced photo enthusiast and the camera has increased my keeper shot immensely ! ... I have been using this camera for all of my commercial photoshoots, weddings, and personal use, as well as for short films and wedding videographer. I received the camera with the latest firmware update (3.0.0 I believe) which solved the overheating issue with 4K video. I have experienced absolutely no problems with any of the functionality of the camera. The only downside: the battery life. During photoshoots with solid breaks in between shots, the battery life is fine. But quick succession photos and any long term video shooting in 4K (HD is not as much of a problem) will drain the battery faster than a normal rate. Easy fix: battery grip and plenty of extra batteries. Overall, switching to Sony was the best decision I've made so far. ... More

I recently upgraded from the original A7R. Everything I wanted on the original they added to the sequel and then some. The stabilizer is wonderful. The quiet shutter mode is a treat for the ears. The new grip on the second line of the A7 platform is much more comfortable than the first line up. I am mainly going to be doing portraits and landscapes with this amazing set up. So far paired up with the 28mm f/2 lens and the fisheye converter this thing is out of this world. I can't wait to put a Zeiss lens on is and test it to the fullest. I have used the 90mm macro lens and the 30mm macro lens both of which are insanely sharp when on this new body. Lowlight shots have been a dream of mine to do consistently without a tripod and now I am one step closer with this camera. Shooting down to 1/20 handheld is a piece of cake for this camera. ... More

Excellent design and construction. I love the layout of the controls on this camera. The controls I use most often are easily accessible as mechanical levers/dials on the exterior of the camera - no need to enter the digital maze that complicates most digital cameras. The EV control (over and under exposure) is exterior; the f/stop and shutter speed are adjusted with exterior dials. The camera is clearly smaller and lighter than other full format digital cameras. The available lenses are extremely high quality. I am using the zeiss f4.0 24-70mm lens. Incredibly short. I wish that there was a wider selection of available lenses. No doubt that will come. A variable f/stop 70-300 lens would be appreciated. Conflict of interest disclosure - none. I bought this camera after researching the options. ... More

Overheating: Hasn't happened yet. I take short clips under 15 minutes. Most problems I've seen in overheating has something to do with settings. It's best if you shoot Super 35, move the LCD away from the body and keep it shaded. Battery Life: It's a compact car with a 12 cylinder engine. Look at Canon's new mirrorless, it has the same battery life and it's compact car with a 4 cylinder engine. Besides those two biggest concerns, it's a great camera that takes almost every lens out there. I'm a street photographer and I travel a lot, a lot. I take it with me 80% of the time. On an avg day, I'll shoot just over 175 photos and 10 mins of video and would still have 20% left. I did a 45 min time lapse and had 40% left. ... More

Upgraded from an A6000 with the 24mm Zeiss and 32mm Touit. I am using the A7RII with the 28mm and 55mm currently. I got to use it for a couple days with a Sigma 35 f1.4 ART via the bundled metabones IV adapter and I was pretty impressed with the sharpness I got from that combo. I also tried it with the 35mm F1.4 Sony E mount lens and the results were decent but softer than I was hoping for. The eye autofocus is nice, but it is not quick enough to keep up with toddler unless they are miraculously posing for a few seconds. With an adult who is holding still the eye autofocus is awesome! To use the eye autofocus requires holding a button while focusing with the shutter. I wish it just did that automatically as part of face recognition. The two step process makes it easy to skip. Focus speed and accuracy indoors with low light is on par with the A6000. If the focus is nailed the results look good to me up ISO 12800 on a 25 monitor. The ability to face detect across a large portion of the frame make this easier to use for my wife and I than the smaller focus point arrays of a DSLR. We use live view very heavily and prefer the mirrorless to an SLR purely for that reason. Easier to hold the camera away from us and make faces at the baby and still check the framing. ... More

Love it! I came from the Canon world (Canon 5D MK2) and I'm glad I made the switch. The Dynamic Range is wonderful; the resolution phenomenal; and the low noise at high ISO settings is out of this world. The detail is so sharp that my first shot with this camera was used to perform an eye surgery on my wife - not really - but the detail is incredible. The Pro Fusion Smart AF Adapter worked great with this camera and my Canon lenses.

For landscape photography I would give this a 5 and wildlife a 2. I just returned from several days recording wildlife in Badlands NP. The high dynamic range and low noise at high ISO settings were great for night photography and early morning landscapes. Autofocus sensitivity is too poor to use in low contrast light whether early or mid day. When it functions speed using the metabones adaptor and 600 mm Canon lens was acceptable. In low light manual focus peaking works best with stationary subjects and is almost as fast as autofocus when I got used to it. Wildlife video was excellent. ... More

After 45 years of shooting film I wanted to try digital and purchased both a Sony a6000 and Fuji XT1. Nice products, but IQ is akin to 35mm film and did not have the tonality and sharpness of medium format film. The A7R2, however, is a game changer. Prints and files are easily as good as output from the Rolleiflexes and Mamiya 7. At 65 yo, I did not want the bulk and weight of a DSLR and find that the Sony and a few lenses are easily carried. An added bonus is the Novoflex adapter which allows use of Nikon lenses. ... More

The A7RII camera body meets and exceeds all of my expectations - The resolution is truly astounding, especially when coming from my previous DSLR. The build quality is what you would expect from Sony: it's solid and has a well balanced feel in your hand. The display and the viewfinder are both clear, and they dynamically switch between each other using a proximity sensor in the eye cup of the viewfinder. This is great, as it automatically turns off the display when you are looking through the viewfinder and it turns it back on when you take it away from your eye. I've found this partially useful when framing shots, as I can tilt the display for shots that are above my eye level. However, as other reviews have noted the 28-70mm Lens included in this kit does let down the camera body in some situations. As other reviews have noted, the lens appears slightly soft at some focal lengths. However, I've only noticed it on a few of the photos I've taken thus far. This is what has led me to access the lens as adequate. It doesn't rival the nicer G Series Lens or Zeiss Lens, but is fine for most applications. With that being said, the advantage of this kit is that it gets you into the Sony Alpha system for such a reasonable price. The other items in the kit are all great. B&H did a astounding job of fulfilling the order, which I received a mere 20 hours after ordering the kit. All things considered, the A7RII is a great camera. ... More

Coming from a Canon T3 I had a big decision whether to stay Canon or make the switch to the dark side. Since I didn't have a lot of money invested in Canon glass i decided to just say F'it and go all out. I bought the open box special here on B&H and couldn't be happier. The camera and all of its packaging looked untouched when i first opened the box. basically the best $400 I've ever saved on camera equipment. One this to note was that upon arrival I did need to update the software (which was very easy online). I chose the Sony Zeiss 24-70mm F4 as my first native lens but am still able to use my canon 75-300mm lens with a cheap adapter as well as a Rokinon 8mm fisheye. Overall I am more than pleased with this camera so far... although i do wish they included the time lapse and other app for free instead of charging another $10 per after charging $3,000 for the body alone. Another thing to note... if you are using LR5 you will need to either upgrade to LR6 or the creative cloud in order to edit Sony RAW files. I was very upset to learn this afterwards. Upgrade to this camera, you won't be disappointed. Feel free to check my IG for my latest examples! @JLaZZ447 ... More

I use this camera for work outdoor landscapes and with indoor studio lighting. It produces the best images I could ask for. I purposefully shot pictures with overblown highlights and was able to rescue nearly everything in vibrant colors and detail without having to use HDR. The noise on some high ISO's looks like film grain, too. The file sizes are massive, though, giving you 82 MB Uncompressed RAW. So having a massive storage space is a must. Don't let it discourage you from getting this body, though. If you're switching and have Nikon and Canon lenses, then the Metabones adapters go perfectly with this. Treat yoself! ... More

This camera was a big deal in 2015, and is a bargin in 2020! The A7rii might not have the latest inovations in AF tracking and UI/hardware development from Sony; but make no mistake, this camera packs a HUGE punch. There's a good reason why Sony wanted use this same sensor in the A7riii. Image quality is not an issue with this camera. The A7rii is a very similar beast that came out when it seemed like Sony was just starting to grasp their identity within their Alpha line of cameras. Body style, user customization, great dynamic range, and more is offered here! Sony has done an amazing job at supporting the A7rii via firmware updates, but with the discontinuation of the a6000, I fear they are finally working out this aging generation of their cameras. I'd grab one now, while you can. In my experience, the a7rii is about 90% of the tech in their a7riii at a significantly lower price. Whether this is your first camera, or a supplement to a more modern camera, This is 100% worth picking up at its 2020 price point. ... More

The camera is definitely interesting. It's light, handy with some small and very good optics, some other very good and of the same size as the competition. Unfortunately, even the best batteries last 250 shots, you need a grip to improve the handgrip and bring two batteries to get off with half a day of autonomy. The menu is somewhat confused and redundant, but after a while you get used to it. Unfortunately, while shooting at 4/5 frames per second, the image on the screen or viewfinder is not as fast as you need, so you do not see what you are doing. Ideal for panoramas, even with residual light. Great silent shot though single only, it is a perfect theater camera. ... More
