This mic and variations like the chrome ones you will see on old videos/movies like Woodstock do not need a thumbs up review from me although I have used them since 1969. There are very few tools, especially electronic ones, that can take such abuse of the road, heavy use, and just keep on going. The reason I got the special edition was it was a gift and it just so happens one of my Shure SM58's just bit the dust recently after over 30 years of service and showing its battle scares of scratches and dented screen from hitting a concrete floor. It probably had a slight loose connection. With poor vision I did not attempt a repair. If memory serves me well, the SM58 costs less now than it did in 1971, when I sent a few back for repair after them being brutalized by very energetic singers using the sound system for which I was a roadie. If you are young and need a mic, the SM58 should be somewhere in the top two you may choose from no matter what the price. If you are older, you probably already have owned one or more. ... More

I bought the SM58 for home recording. I record in my living room and therefore a large diaphragm condenser microphone is just not going to work for me. The SM58 is very directional and for the most part ignores the various noises that are all around my apartment building. Once I cleaned up the low end with some EQ, the recordings I obtained with the SM58 were quite good and usable. You will need an in-line mic pre-amp to get a good signal for your interface. I'm very happy with the SM58!

I purchased two of these microphones for church use, primarily vocal music and spoken word. The construction quality and durability are great. And the sound for voice is very good. I especially like not having to worry about an occasional drop or bump. The included cable is satisfactory, but it has a stiff jacket that prevents it from staying flat on the floor, creating a tripping hazard. I would probably purchase a different cable with a soft elastomeric rubbery coating that will stay flat on the floor. I marked this purchase down one star because of the cable quality. The microphone is excellent. ... More

The SM58 is our microphone of choice when voice recording. I teach from beginning to advanced students in high school media production classes and this mic can handle them all. It's great for beginners that haven't learned about accidentally recording background noises yet. With its cardioid pickup pattern, it helps to eliminate unwanted sound while isolating what they do want to hear. In addition, it also cuts down on handling noises for the students that are still a bit careless with holding the mic. It also continues to be the best choice once the students are ready for more advanced projects wherever voice recordings are concerned. I have been using the same SM58s that I purchased when I began teaching seven years ago and they continue to perform as well as they did back then. ... More

I am a newbie podcaster and I'm not quite ready to sink $350 into a new dynamic mic. Thus, I bought the SM58S as a lower-cost compromise and I have been very happy. I'm using it with a Behringer 1202 mixer hooked up to a Roland R-05 recorder and the sound quality is awesome. One thing about the pop filter though - all of the reviews/videos I looked at said you did not need a pop filter or windscreen because there was one built internally into the SM58. But I was still getting a lot to popping on the mic. I have since added the $6 windscreen and there have been no problems. ... More

This mic is built like a tank, very rugged and tough. Bought two of these to use in general purpose church vocal music and spoken word. I like the design and the audio quality. The output level is relatively low, partially due to not being a condenser mic. Make sure you have loud sound levels or good gain in your preamp. The included cable is fairly stiff, and it will not lay flat on the floor like a good elastomer-based cable. I might skip the cable and buy a good quality cable separately next time.

I have been using shure sm58's at my church for a number of years and now am building my own audio outfit for off site events, so purchasing sm58 mics was a no brainer, especially the way the mics handle the rough treatment by careless people. But when I saw the 50th anniversary kit that B&H had put together plus the holiday price it was icing on the cake. Thanks for the great deal!

We use these mics as rentals; mostly at podiums in our event spaces. They are really reliable, provide a good quality sound, and take a lot of abuse (I once saw one used as a gavel during a meeting - we strongly advise against that.)

Going into my second year of podcasting and wanted to up our gear to the next level. I got these because they were apart of the podcasting bundle, but honestly I didn't need any of the extra wires that ended up being free if you purchased as a bundle, so I separately bought 2 of each the rode psa1 studio boom arm, the A55M shure mic mount, these headphones, the shure SM58 handheld mic bundle. We have already uploaded a few new episodes, and not only is the sound super clear and crisp, but our entire set up is so much neater over all. Really happy with this purchase ! ... More

The most dependable mic I've ever used, meaning I've used this model for years on everything from studio recording to live performance, and most recently on live play-by-play broadcast as a nat-mic (field mic) to pick up the sounds of the game, and it serves as a backup mic in case a headset malfunctions and I need an instant backup. It's not a super high-end studio mic but it sounds great for my application, and best of all, this mic can take the road.

The Shure SM58 never fails. Love this family of microphones, and especially like having the on/off switch. The only thing keeping me from issuing a 5-star review is that the switch itself is a touch looser than I would like it to be, leading to concerns about its usefulness over the long-term. At the moment, this is (hopefully) a minor quibble of mine. A durable and excellent overall microphone, especially considering the price.

I use an SM58S Vocal Microphone in karaoke. The sound output through a system of a mixer, Denon AVR X2100W amplifier and Klipch speakers is warm and clear. There is not too much bass. The handling noise is acceptable. This microphone has an On / Off switch so that I can turn it off when not in use. I like this one more than the one without On / Off switch. I felt it a little heavier when I held it and sang for several songs. However, I believe a good microphone should not be light. If I want to buy one more, I would buy it again. ... More

Novice at home recording - this mic is great for an easy and top-quality vocal sound. Can't be beaten at the price point. I'm not sure if the mic is great at much else other than vocals which is annoying if you're on a tight budget and want a single all-purpose mic. SM57 is probably better in that respect (I've heard it can get a decent rock vocal sound)

I purchased the SM58S (special order with a switch) because our application at church required this type of extra control from the user end. The legendary sm58 mic was not at all changed by this extra feature and that is why I believe Shure deserves high marks. Excllence in sound and application. Thank you Shure.

The 58 is the workhorse of microphones. You can put it in front of anything and it won't let you down. It's not always the best choice if you have other mics available, but if this is all you have, it's still a good mic to use. This one comes with a cable for a few dollars more, which is worth it, especially if you're buying many of them at once. I bought five of these to keep in my inventory for rentals and the occasional musician or speaking gig.

I wanted to move up to a better vocal mic and after trying out various ones settled on this standard. Sound is much clearer on recordings and live but the best improvement I've noticed is it is much easier to use. I always had trouble finding the sweet spot when singing with my former cheapy mic but the Shure has a lot of tolerance.

Shure Vocal Mic is good sounding and made for the studio or live performances. The only negative comment is the on/off switch. It is too soft when sliding it to the on or off position. It can easily be turned off if your hand is too close to it.

I have been a professional singer for 30+ years and still love the SM58. This one with the on/off switch is even better so I can turn it off while the band is soloing and not have that sound coming through my mic. I love it.
