I got these on a slight whim, inspired in part by a vague idea I might like to do some amateur recording work from time to time and in part by a long-standing interest in being able to listen to professional-quality sound. Online reviews pointed me to the HD 280 Pro as a good balance between quality and value. Having used the headphones for some two weeks now, I can certainly vouch for the quality of the sound. It's only the fit that can be uncomfortable, though I can't say for sure if it's because of the weight or because of the tightness. This being my first time using an over-the-ear headphone, I also can't offer any comparisons with other models. I have decided to keep these. But because of the uncomfortable fit I'm unlikely to wear them as often as I had hoped. ... More

I rate this set on price and value. The HD 280's are a great deal. Extremely versatile, nice fit over ear, good range, great for editing (video), and great feel. Not the best top of the line headphones, BUT considering that you can spend $$to get an extremely versatile and great set of headphones that will do the job WELL, I would recommend them. You will not be sacrificing quality for a low price. Good deal.

Many years ago in the 1970s I owned a pro recording studio. Had the best of what was then available. Now I'm recording my own horn playing as a hobby. I wanted a headset with a "flat" frequency response curve, not the consumer bass boost headset common to Best Buys and other chain retailers. This is exactly that, and for a third the cost of the boomy headsets widely sold. I really like hearing exactly what I've recorded, not a boomed-up version for lots more money.

these Sennheiser HD280 Pros are what you need for your recording studio hands down! Amazing quality sound....i mix with these and i prefer these over my studio monitors...thats how good they are! good reproduction and accuracy of what your mix will sound like...whatever you hear thru these, is actually what the final product of whatever you record is....amazing sound rejection...you block everything out! my ONLY small complaint with these are the fixed cable it comes with...if you break it, or it becomes unservicable, it would be very difficult to remove and replace...yeah, sure, it comes with an option to but the replacement cable for this unit, but that takes away from being absolutely PERFECT...but even with that...5 stars...or more specifically 4 and a half (fix this B&H!!!!)...if you want to enter the professional realm of studio headphones, these are what you need! ... I've heard nothing but great things from my sister who received this gift from me. One thing to note, if you use these headphones on poor quality audio equipment (like your iPhone or iPod), then they will not sound great. You might even think they sound bad because you are hearing just how bad the audio drivers on those devices really are. If you instead plug these into your computer or home stereo system (it doesn't have to be highend), then you will begin to realize just how poor the sound of that mini player really is. The sound is crisp and clear without overdriving the bass to pretend like you're an athlete. ... More

First, the pros: These are quality headphones. They are made well, fit tight to prevent sound leaking, but not too tight. Are relatively lightweight and reproduce sound well. However, the cons: when I compare them to my Shure SRH-440's they seem bright and lacking a tad bit of detail. For my purposes, despite my reasons for wanting to change, I will continue using the Shures. Apparently, just like a good microphone every set of headphones have their own character and may not be suited to what you need or to your ears. For reference, the majority of what I use studio headphones for is editing and mastering audiobooks. ... More

This headphone has excellent built and sound isolation. It works well on noisy bus rides. I use it just about daily since I spent two hours each day on the bus. Sound quality is okay. My 19 yrs old GRADO LAB SR60 still is a better sound headphone in a not so noise environment. If I am in the office or at home, I would use the GRADO over the HD-280. The Grado has more present, more real than the HD-280. The bass on the HD-280 is flat and weak but the Grado which is tight and solid. Mid range the the Grado is way better than the HD-280. I can listen to the Grado for hours without fatigue but not so the HD-280. I have to crank up the volume more on the HD-280 to get reasonable music present but that got my ears fatigue easily. I have tried Bose and other noise isolation earphones but they are not very well built and sound quality are marginal. The HD-280 would give others manufacture a run for their money but the Grado Lab top them all. ... More

I bought these as a replacement for a pair that I broke recently. I bought the same pair again, even though the price has gone up by $20 because I like them so much. I used them for DJ and production monitoring in a small home studio. They are a little snug if you have a larger head but do a wonderful job of cutting outside noise down so you don't need to turn them up too much. They fold down for easy storage/transport and have user replaceable parts. Fairly durable as well, I'd had my last pair for around 2 years and had not taken very good care to protect them (I dropped them a lot). The coiled cord can be a little short, especially when you plug into a 1/8 jack but the 1/4 had no issues pulling out. ... More

I got these on sale for $ and the sound is superior to all other brands in this price range. It makes brands like SkullCandy, SONY, and TDK sound weak and inadequate. The noise cancellation is very good. I used it on a plane while sitting right next to the engine and was able to enjoy my music and movies without an issue. I couldn't even hear people trying to get my attention. Also, each piece on these headphones is replaceable. If you don't like the twisted cord, you can follow the manual's instructions and change it. They also fold up in 3 different ways, which is nice, depending on where you want to store them. You really can't beat these for the price. Sennheiser is in a league of its own, IMHO. ... More

I'm not an audio producer, I bought this (HD280Pro), because I wanted a decent sound quality and detail. I just got it yesterday, and I have noticed: - Sound clarity is amazing - Cord length is great - Everything sounds even (Highs, Mids, and BASS) - The isolation can't be better (but not as good as Active Noise Cancellation) - Ear pieces are BIG (the hit my jaw bones) - Works very good with my MacBook Pro (Volume ---I---), and even better with the iPhone 4 - Some people said the BASS is not balanced well, I disagree with them, it is very well balanced I can't be amazed easily when it comes to qualities, but this time Sennheiser has done a good job. ... I've been using these headphones every day for about three weeks. They have been a major upgrade from the $60 Velodyne headphones I had been using before. The sound is perfectly balanced (ideal for video editing) and does not emphasize deep bass as much as other industry-standard headphones. This makes the HD 280 great for mixing recorded audio and music. The ear cups press a bit harder onto my head than I would like, and I have to flip the cups facing out when sitting around my neck otherwise it feels like I'm being choked. The padding around the ears is quite thick which makes them comfortable to wear for long edits. Overall, these are great budget headphones for editors and mixers. ... More

Great for noise reduction: I work in a loud office with other editors who playback with speakers; even with the noise I can still do transcribing work. Maybe it's because they are new but they feel very tight on my head. They are much heavier than I expected! The large ear cups are very nice - I have an industrial piercing which always gets agitated with other headphones. Here's hoping that once they are worn in more they will be a little more comfortable

Ive used the standard Sony studio monitoring headphones for video production purposes, and while they sound fine, they just dont last very long...ear cup material comes apart or just comes off. The Sennheiser HD 280s are buil to stand up to the riggors of location production applications while providing great isolated sound for monitoring purposes. My only compliant/wish would be for them to switch to a non-coiled headphone cable...gets stretched out if someone decides to wrap it around the earpieces or if it gets shoved into a bag.

I previously owned a pair of Samsung stereo headphones and consider myself to be fairly brand loyal, but I tried a friend's pair of Sennheisers and instantly knew I was overdue for an upgrade. They are a screaming deal for the price. Practically as good as some of the noise cancelling earphones I have tried and MUCH more comfortable, affordable and more appropriate for my line of work. I use my Sennheisers for audio recording in film production so often I am wearing them for hours at a time. They are comfortable, lightweight and breathe well so my temple and sideburns don't get all sweaty. Durability has yet to be determined since I haven't had them for long yet, but my coworkers pair is still going strong after several intense productions so I have high expectations. ... More

Pros: Awesome sound quality Keeps ambient noise out very well Fits over whole ear They are attractive headphones Cons: A bit tight can get uncomfortable after too short a time with them on My ear, not quite, but almost touches the screen where the speakers are so maybe a little more depth where the ear cups are would have been great Overall, a great product, after about a month of use. If Sennheiser would just fix those few comfort issues it would get another star EASY. Overall, it's EXCELLENT for price and I would consider buying again. ... More

These headphones have a nice tight fit that are very comfortable for the hour or so I have them on. I only occasionally find myself cupping my ears to make sure I'm capturing the right sound because they do a very good job of keeping the sound in and the noise out. And the sound seems to be exactly the sound that is leaving the building to the output. They are well worth the money for me. ... More

I use these headphones every day at work, and they do a fairly good job of keeping out most outside office noise. Definitely not as clean as an active canceling system, but those typically give me headaches so these headphones are very good considering that all canceling is passive. Occasional chatter does still get through (especially if people are talking loudly nearby), but that's likely only because I like to keep my listening volume veeeery low. The cord has good length for all practical purposes and the phones themselves pack up relatively compactly for easy storage or movement. The phones are also very comfortable to wear even for extended periods of time. ... More

I bought the headphones for use in a office environment. It's not noise-canceling, but can sufficiently block out most of the noise or conversations from the next cube. =) Sound quality is good, though lack on bass, but it was crisp and clear on all notes. Particularly enjoy it listening to jazz or classic music. It's bulky but light. can tell it is made with great material and craftsmanship. (Made in Ireland) But with the bulkiness and lack of noise-canceling, I probably won't take it on a trip or on a airplane. (Will probably bring a Bose QC15) This item is priced very reasonable, so in case someone in my office messes around with it, I won't have a heart attack.
