I sought out and bought the Sennheiser e609 here on Reverb.com because I knew it was the best all around microphone for miking my guitar amp. It's also one of the best bangs for your buck out there as well. I've been a professional guitarist for over 25 years now and spent the last 20 years playing professionally for the U.S. Navy Band program. The job required me to play all over the world in numerous situations from small jazz combos, full size big bands, rock/top 40 bands (covering everything from pop, country, top 40, light rock to heavy rock) and sometimes even as a guitarist in a concert band setting playing on a pops piece. In all of these situations I usually miked my guitar amp, and the mic that always worked best for me was the e609. Even though most of my experience with this microphone is in live performance settings, I also have lots of live recording as well as recording in the studio experience too. Throughout my years I've played live and recorded with SM57's, SM58's, AKGC414, SennheiserMD421 and finally the Sennheiser e609. Even though for a high end studio session you may want to use a more expensive mic (if you can afford it) like a Neumann U87 or a Royer 121, I have found that the e609 does a fantastic job at capturing the exact sound coming out of my amplifier, no matter what amp I'm using at the time and putting it into the recording. That also goes for live recordings and through the PA mains while playing a live performance. Okay, LIVE PERFORMANCE. Whether your going to record your performance or not, in my opinion the e609 does the best job at capturing the exact sound that comes out of my amp speakers and pushes it through the PA and/or to recording. I must also mention that when you are playing live a lot like I did in the Navy or in the local bar or nightclub scene, we are always in a hurry aren't we. Setting up last minute for whatever reason. The convenience of NOT having to set up a mic stand and wrap the mic cord around that stand so you don't trip on it and then finally positioning the microphone perfectly where you want it at your speaker cone is wonderful. With the e609 I put the mic cord through my amp handle, hang the mic in front of my speaker and move on to the next step in my setup. I know this may seem trivial, but when you're in a rush, you really appreciate those saved 2 minutes. To sum up, I keep talking about capturing the sound. Whether it's in a live setting or a recording session, isn't that what we're really after here with a microphone anyways. As guitarists we work so hard at getting that exact sound we're happy with coming out the front of our amps. What we need is a mic that captures that exact sound without modification and sends it to the PA or to a recording. Add that in with the convenience of hanging the mic quickly in front of your amp for a quicker set up and tear down. PLUS, the e609 is so reasonably priced compared to other mic's in it's class, it was the only choice for me once I retired from the Navy and needed to buy my own mic. i am a student at Full Sail University and today in class we had a guitar re-amped in a million $+ studio with a 9098i console off of a studer tape machine into a marshall JCM 2000. we recorded the exact same track's rhythm guitar through this mic, a sm57, an AKG 414 and a seinheiser 421. as far as rhythm guitar goes, this blew ALL the other mics out of the water. it was chunky and had all the beef one could want. now for leads it didnt live up as well as some others, but for rhythm guitar....im buying this over any of the mics we used. it is great for building your arsenal of mics for creating that sound you want. ... I am a mic geek, and have quite a selection of mics ranging from "modded" Chinese mics to high-end classics. I bought this on an impulse after getting a GC gift card from my daughter (I raised my kids with class!!), and picked this over the slightly more expensive upgrade (906, I think....). I have only tried it on a few different guitar cabs in my small but very commercial studio, so I can't comment on how it sounds with other sources yet (but will). I always track amps with multiple mics to have more options in the song building and mixing phases, and one is usually some kind of dynamic mic. I replaced the trusty old SM57 with this and I have to say that I may retire my 57's for a while! This has the same high-frequency capture that the 57 was reliable for, but this mic seems to have more "oomph" to me. It seems a bit light-weight on the build, one half of the grille seems plasticy, but at this price I am totally willing to ensure that I don't abuse like I have grown accustomed to doing with my 57's....(lol, I have always called 57's my Army Tank Mics for a reason....). This microphone gives the SM57 a run for its money and in some cases is better than it. I love using this for my guitar amp recording. It always picks up the sound beautifully and you can lay it right on the grill and get a great sound. I also use it for a kick drum mic and it performs great also. Works well with a snare and other drums. I completely recommend this if you want an alternative for the sm57 because this is awesome.

This mic is what I use to mic my Vox half stack. It works great, just put it near a speaker, and it works perfectly. The sound is perfect, and it is an amazing deal for the money. I'd highly recommend it to anyone miking a guitar amp.

First off, this mic has a great design. I love the look and vibe of it. However, the sound is just not for me. I was looking to pair something up with my modified SM57, the E609 is in my price range, and I adore Sennheiser headphones as they have a very accurate midrange. I thought this mic was sure to be a winner. When I got it home, and started laying down some tracks to compare it to my mod SM57, the 57 was fatter & warmer. The E609 has this airy top end that I just could not get used to, especially on distorted guitars. It made it difficult to fit it into a mix as the top end occupied some of the cymbal space. I ended up having to roll off top end, and I would rather not EQ electric guitars. I am sure the mic would be awesome for Snare and Toms, but I've already got my favorites for those. I tried to get into the E609 for a couple of weeks, but ended up returning it for a different mic. ... More

This mic is great for almost anything. I wasn't satisfied with an SM58 for vocal recording, so I tried this on the vocal stand, and it is the clearest vocal mic I have heard in my life. Also great for picking up the kick drum, excellent for guitar mic'ing. If You're looking for a new mic for the studio, this is your best choice hands down!

I love the E609 for clean work but it tends to be a bit bass heavy. For dirty stuff I prefer a 57 but it works well for cleans in some cases. The stand works great. It works well for micing guitar amps. The cable sucks. It lasted me two days for about 4 hours a piece. I fixed the cable but then about a week later the the male jack bent and I could not repair it. I would rate the mic at 4.5 the stand at 4 and the cable at 1.

Like most people, I have been using a 57 for micing up my guitar amp. On a whim, I stopped at GC last night on my way to a show and picked up one of these beauties....As soon as I hit a chord, WOW....what a difference! I love the 57, don't get me wrong but for my personal Guitar tones, this mic really captured them. Not to mention it can just lay flat against the cabinet by the cable, no stand needed. I use a variety of different mics for different things, but I've always used Sennheiser for my vocal mics (live). For the price, you can't go wrong with this one! Not to mention the 10 year warranty on the box, which I know I'll never need. Great job as always from the folks at Sennheiser!! ... More

i've been using the mic for recording and some live. The mic is designed perfect for guitar cabs. If your looking for a mic just to mic guitar cabs this is the way to go over the '57. if your looking for a mic that you can use to mic guitar cabs and use as a snare mic, etc., i'd go with a '57. This is one of most transparent (if you but a bad sounding amp in you'll get a bad sound out, if you out a good sonund in you'll get a good sound out) mics i've ever used. In the studio, the design where it only picks up the sound on one side is great. allows those with home studios and one room to stay in the room and not worry about your natural guitar being picked up over the amp. highly suggest this mic for anybody. ... I bought this for use in my home recording room so that I could move away from plugins (even though Helix Native is pretty great.) I play guitar through an Orange Dark Terror and Sonic 2x12 with Celestion G12's with a Helix Stomp for effects. I usually run in 7 Watt mode on the amp and I am not usually playing really loud. I just wanted a mic that could capture a really good tone without being too fussy about placement. I did what the video says to do—hang it right in the center of one of the speakers—and I was capturing a sound that was very similar to what I was hearing in front of the cab. I just bought some AKG K371 headphones and the combination is really amazing! I went with 4 stars because, while I really like it for what I need, I don't think that it is the ultimate mic. If you don't consider yourself a sound engineer but would like to capture some nice amp tone I would say this is a winner! ... More

I'm a full-time professional guitarist and most contracted sound companies already have this microphone for guitar - I bought mine for the times when I run into the few that don't. My reasoning is that I spend all this $$$ on great-sounding gear, but the sound company is using a Radio Shack Realistic mic draped over my amp, pointing straight down and not at the speaker. So what's the point of having all this great tone if the audience doesn't get to hear it...???

This is, without a doubt, the easiest and most reliable to source, PA and Recording mic for instruments I have used in 20 years. Smooth sound without changing character and the rejection of surroundings is very good especially if you drape it over the amp. That's the feature best of all. You can drape it over the amp, close mic it, no breaking up from loud DB's and resolves the mic stand in front of the amp. I used it in the my studio and it will give you your sound and it will reflect the changes in placement. All in all, for this price, it will serve you well. If you want better, spend much more. I have mic's I spent 300 bucks on that do an extremely well job in recording but are much more work than this one. I highly suggest this mic. ... More

I had been scoping out this mic for quite some time. The reviews were all stellar. I ALMOST got it while our bassist was working at GC but he left the day I asked him to grab one for me so I waited. Admittedly, I had been using a cheaper EV Cobalt mic I got on a Stupid Deal Of The Day which "did the job" but I knew there was better. Seeing as I gig anywhere from 5-10 gigs per month I decided to go with it on the way to the gig. First off, I LOVE how it drapes over your amp for smaller venues. Our soundman LOVED the clarity of the mic and so did I. My "new" sound was inspiring and I felt I was playing on a new level. It made my Gibson LP and Orange amp sing through the pa and monitors. It was only a little over $100 and I should have upgraded a long time ago. ... More

Like everyone else I've been a SM57 user since I began playing live. I recently noticed that there was a $30 discount on the e609 for the holidays and decided for the price I just had to try it. There was an immediate noticeable difference in my miced guitar tone. It sounded like a blanket had been lifted from my amp. If want a multipurpose mic and you can only afford one mic then I say get a SM57, it is a workhorse that can be used for a variety of micing situations. If you are looking for a dedicated guitar cab mic then get a e609. You will not be dissapointed. The added plus is also that you will no longer need to carry a mic stand for your cab. You can just drap this mic over the cab and it's ready to go. If you drapping your SM57 over you cab then you are not using it right. ... More

Of course, the exercise of micing an amp takes a bit of trial and error regardless of which microphone you buy, but once I found the sweet spot, the e609 did the rest. Through the PA mains (and through recordings), I've come to find the representation of my amp's tone is very true and clear. I got all the sound I needed, and the larger area on the mic makes it easy to position it on the speaker to get various tones. I just drape over the grill cloth and to one side. Long story short i found a clip made it work and was completely amazed with what i was getting.
