The Perfect Live Vocal Mic

The Sennheiser e835 S comes with your standard-issue accessories: a mounting clip, zippered carry bag, documentation and user's manual. The mic is attractive and the build quality appears to be excellent, with a nice, solid aluminum barrel and a sturdy headbasket that appears well able to survive more than a few floor drops. XLR plugs lock in cleanly and tightly, without play or wobble. Like all handheld dynamic vocal mics, the headbasket easily unscrews for cleaning, and replacement headbaskets are widely obtainable. Sennheiser also offers a fitted foam windscreen, that looks much nicer and fits far better than the typical generic "clown nose" windscreens. Sonically, the e835 is downright amazing, with exceptional clarity, openness, transparency and intelligibility. It's neutral in character, with less coloration and more refinement than a SM58, though not as warm, fat and creamy as the SM7B. It definitely has the Sennheiser "house sound," which is very different from the Shure sound. Besides its sonic excellence, it can take the worst, mic-eating, screaming "air raid siren" vocalist you can throw at it without audible distortion. The e835 also suffers less from off-axis colorations and comb filtering than the SM58, with significantly lower proximity effect bass boost as well. This makes it a superior choice to put in front of those who don't use a mic correctly. The tradeoff is that the e835's cardioid polar pattern isn't as tight as the SM58's, which along with its higher sensitivity makes it slightly more prone to bleed and feedback. A highly congested, very high volume stage with loud floor monitors and overly reflective surfaces is about the only place I might choose the SM58 over an e835, though I'd definitely soundcheck the e835 first before automatically defaulting to the SM58. Handheld vocal mics should feel good as well as sound good, and the e835 has an excellent feel with zero handling noise. The wide switch has a crisp, smooth action, with a flat profile and sufficiently long throw to prevent accidental operation during use. It can also be fixed in the "On" position if not needed, with nothing more than a small screwdriver and 20 seconds of your time. To my ears, the Sennheiser e835 is the the best all-around live vocal dynamic mic on the market today in its price range, whether for singing or dialogue, and I prefer it over the ubiquitous SM58 99% of the time. This microphone is amazing. It is the same mic as the e835 but with a switch. We play Hip Hop, Blues, and Heavy Metal, the e835s holds up to all styles of music & all vocal tones. I own the e835 and the e835s, and both of them are excellent mics. I can't notice a tone difference between the two, & if you jam at a warehouse, the switch feature is heaven sent to stop that annoying feedback. Shure better get their game together, becuse the Sennheiser mics are far superior.

This is a good live mic that in my opinion has a better range and more punch then the Shure 58 for about the same price. For whatever reason, this e835S is not as loud as my other e835, which does not have the on off switch. I would recommend this mic, and Sennheiser in general, as I feel they have kept up with technology, where Shure has fallen behind.

I have been using shure hand held mikes for a long time and let me tell you they are realy realy great. But I bought this microphone and wow. I am here to tell you. If you want a great microphone you cannot find a better one. Clear, translates your voice perfect. Sounds fabulous. It absolutely blows the sure out of the water. I ab'd them both for a long time and could not believe my ears. This mike beat the shure SM58S that has been go to mike in the past. Not only did I realize this. I brought three different people and would sing for them over each mike and ask which one they thought was the best. They all said there is no comparison the E835S just blows the sure SM58S away. Now dont get me wrong the sure is a great great mike but it pales next to this masterpiece. The microphone I use for recording in the studio in Nashville Tennessee is a 5,000 studio microphone that is the cat's meow. I use this new great microphone however with my fishman artist amplifier and my ipod when I sing at churches and nursing homes. ... More

Sennheiser did it right! I have the E835 without the On/Off switch. I needed a reliable mic with great sound and proven performance.... why change? I purchased this E835S with the On/Off switch that I needed. It performs great. No click sound when turning the mic on or off. Great clarity and sound. You can't go wrong with this mic. Buy it!

Solid performer with lovely and durable fit and finish. Probably my favorite vocal microphone of all time (I have been using vocal microphones since 1968 for live music, spoken word, computer speech recognition, ham radio, and other applications. I really like the way this handles and sounds - good heft and balance in the hand - very low handling noise (much quieter than the HEIL PR-20) - this has been a real workhorse and sounds as good today as the day I purchased it. These sound really good! I used 2 of them in an interview scenario for a video and the third I used to replace a mic on a piano just to hear if it was better. Never gonna look back for either use They are heavier than the interview mic we used before but the talent really got used to the feel and ended up not wanting to go back either. I quickly got used to the sound which was richer than the previous solutions.

I was using a Shure 58, which is pretty much the standard mic for live singing. The rest of the band I just joined is using Sennheiser 835 and they seemed to think my Shure didn't match their mics, so I bought an 835. With a switch, because I don't sing much in this group. I don't hear a difference and I doubt they would either if they couldn't see which mic I was using. So it goes. Experts. Bah, humbug.

I've used the Sennheiser e835 as the main mic for my Mobile DJ system for about a decade. It's solid, stands up to the wear and tear, and the sound cuts through delivering crystal clear vocals every time. It still looks and sounds great. I wanted one for a second system and one for my home studio. The third one in the package went to my brother who compared it to the $400 & $700 tube mics in his professional studio - his comment was Sennheiser wins!

I've used Sennheiser e835's for more than 10 years as flatter-sounding alternatives to mid-rangey SM57's and 58's. The boosted highs seem to work along with proximity effect to give a flatter more natural sound. They're just as rugged and sound great; the cardioid pattern works well at rejecting feedback (or as well as any other mic).

I did a lot of research (listened to Podcastage for hours) before deciding these were the microphones I wanted. They did not disappoint. They have a great sound and pick up only what is in front of the microphone and very near to the microphone. We use them for live streaming and podcasting from our home studio and it picks up only what we want and nothing else. Great sound for an amazing price.

If you need a switched mic, this is the one to buy. The switch is not noisy, un-like several of the other switched mics on the market. Sound quality is always great with this mic. This is a great buy.

One of the best cardioid dynamic microphone especially when singing. Meanwhile, when giving speech and recording lecture it is good enough to express the tone and emotion. The on/off switch is necessary so I recommend e835S rather than e835 which has no switch.

I use this mic for personal pleasure and for performing in church. This mic has a solid crisp sound. It has a clean look and the on/off switch is a plus. For the price I am well pleased. I have been a Sure SM 58 man for years and I still will be but this microphone has excellent qualities

The addition of a on/off switch is great for PA applications where you don't have a sound guy. Response is wonderful. Rugged design withstands drops. We added a foam windscreen for outdoor use. It was picking up wind noise even at low 5 MPH winds.

I've just started out writing music and performing my songs on my Technics 7000. This microphone is infinitely better than the one I had. I didn't realize how bad my old one was until I sang into this one. Wow! It makes a world of difference.
