Rode has put out another great microphone with fantastic features like auto power on and off, high frequency boost, two high pass filters, -10DB safety track, and multiple power options. The sound quality has also gotten better as well. The reason for a 4 star review is the size is quite larger (but not much heavier than the original) but the worse thing is how far back it sticks from the coldshoe. I made a video comparison to the original RODE vidoemic Pro on my YT channel with sound comparions inside, outside, and boomed. Just search is the videomic Pro plus worth it and you'll see the vidoe. Overall it will sell well but I wonder why they didn't test it out on a few cameras to see how it fits. Bummer! ... More

I'm not usually one to write poor reviews, but I do think people need to be aware of this mic's shortcomings. Rode makes great microphones, but they missed the mark on design for this one. First off, the removable wire, which replaces the built-in wire on the old version, is poorly placed. Because of where it plugs in, it will not allow you to use the viewfinder on your DSLR or mirrorless cameras. Instead, it hits your face and won't let your face make contact with the viewfinder. This is horridly designed for a mic who's main market is DSLR and mirrorless camera users. Second, the mic has grown. It's no longer the small shotgun mic that you're used to. It's wider, longer and heavier. Plus, the design of the mic itself is like a blimp which is awkward and requires a new windscreen. These two design flaws (horrible wire placement and the steep increase in size and weight) make for a disappointing experience and neither add to the audio quality as it's the same as the non-plus version. Sure, the better battery door, rechargeable batteries and auto off capabilities are nice, but they don't fix a mic that prevents you from going handheld. Rode, if you're reading this, go back to the drawing board. You keep coming so close to making the perfect DSLR/mirrorless mic, but you haven't perfected it yet. ... More

I shoot video with a gh4 and, if I don't have a sound-man, then I record sound with an external shotgun fed into a tascam dr40. I am human. Sometimes I forget. Not very often but once in a while, while I am running around shooting live action, I forget to press the button on the tascam. (It is necessary to press it twice, once for sound check and second for record). This is not the fault of the tascam. Tascam dr40 is a great piece of equipment -- very light, very mobile and good solid sound. But when shooting industrials, instructional or other sorts of live action you have to move. The Rode Video Mic Pro Plus makes shooting fast easier. The Rode Video Mic Pro Plus automatically turns on when you turn on your camera. The Video Mic Pro Plus also has a safety filter that records sound at two levels. If you are shooting in a situation where you can not predict the sound levels (such as an industrial) and there are spikes in the sound, then you can choose the track with a lower level. These feature are a big deal when you are shooting by your self. You can concentrate on the image and be confident that you will get good sound. And the sound recorded by the Video Mic Pro Plus is really good. I still use the tascam, but it serves as ambient sound. I find safe place to set the tascam and just let it run. In post I mix sound from the Video Mic Pro Plus and the ambient from the tascam. I use all of the features on the Video Mic Pro Plus. And the sound is great. At this price point this is a great product for a mirrorless shooter. ... More

I didn't realize this thing was going to be so much larger than the videomic pro. That's a little disappointing honestly. I like to keep a low profile when filming and this thing is as tall as my DSLR body and almost as wide/fat as the body. That's really my only complaint, the rest is great, as Rode always has made a good on-camera mic in my opinion. The light on the back is really cool for letting you know how close to fully charged you are, plus when it turns red you still have 10 hours of time left, then it'll blink slow for 2 hours left, and blink red fast for 30 mins left. The previous model I never really knew how much more I could get out of a battery. The charging cable plugs into the side of the mic at the base, then into any USB port. Sound-wise I'll be testing it out on two shoots this weekend but from home tests it sounds great! ... More

There's dozens on of YouTube's on sound quality and features, so I won't repeat those, they're generally positive. Here's my frustrations.... There is no manual, just a multi-lingual quick-start guide that sucks.... it's hard to read. It doesn't even tell you how to turn the mic on or off. I thought I was safe with the auto start/stop when plugged into the camera. I showed up at a wedding and it was completely dead! I thought it had turned off automatically when detached from the camera, obviously not. Or it got turned on when not attached. The charge time is also ridiculous. More than 4-5 hrs. Buy some Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA's and don't leave home without backup batteries. It's much larger physically and weight wise than the basic Video Mic Pro, about 30%, it's big. And, there no carrying case. I scavenged a semi-hard GoPro case ... More

I upgraded from the Rode Video Mic Pro because I was constantly forgetting to power up my mic when recording. The countless videos I shot without audio, because I forgot to power up my mic, were enough to drive me towards this purchase. At first I was reluctant to spend the cash (its a big leap from the lower model). However, after the reading the numerous reviews online and hearing about all the upgrades that were put into this version of the Mic Pro series, I dove in head first. I can honestly say this was the great decision for me. Not only have I seen a huge improvement in the quality of my audio recording, but that fact that I never miss the moment (from an audio perspective of course) is key for me. ... More

Works perfectly, no issues at all. Solid battery life and great range. I ordered the dead cat separately as advised by other reviewers (Still from B&H) and received the correct one, though it's slightly looser than the original foam that comes with the mic. The auto on and off feature is probably my favorite thing about this mic. Great for run and gun, great for solo shoots with no extra sets of eyes. The dual audio level recording is a nice saving piece as well. When doing interviews on the fly sometimes I often run into folks that talk way quieter than I do, so I'll set the gain on the mic to dual level, match myself to the lower level and the higher level will still pick them up clearly. Not exactly how it was intended to be used but helps with the one person production team method. ... More

This is a very clean and dynamic sounding shotgun microphone, with easy to use back button features. It can turn on and off with your camera (signal detection via audio jack when plugged in). The battery in my tests ran way over the advertised 10 hours and closer to 24. I left in on with headphones attached to cycle the battery after first initial charge. Impressive to say the least. Be sure to turn off Auto Gain Control and look at your options on your DSLR - set it to the cleanest least amplified setting possible and let the Rode preamp handle the business. The included foam windscreen and the artificial fur windscreen (separate unless kit) have a kind of rubber lip seal on the back. Nice attention to detail. Shock mount / vibration reduction - very nice design. Handling the camera normally does not introduce noise. ... More

This is an excellent microphone and works great on my mirrorless Nikon Z6. The sound quality is superb. I am glad that the battery is rechargeable or one can use two AA batteries. That is simply very convenient (compared to using a 9V battery in older models). Another major plus is that once connected, switching the camera/camcorder on and off will automatically turn on and off this microphone as well. As mentioned in the other comments, one annoying feature is that the cord is plugged into the lower back side of the microphone. The microphone jack will bump into your forehead if you use the electronic viewfinder (EVF) on the camera. Additionally, this microphone is huge, but it is pretty light. ... More

Replaced a VideoMic with this and love it. 1. We no longer need to run the audio through a preamp before going into our DSLR because of the built-in preamp which is surprisingly clean 2. 100-hour battery life beats the 15-hour battery life of the old guy, plus the LED "battery remaining" indicator is much better than the old system which only warned you 5 minutes before the battery was out. 3. The auto turn on function is an amazing innovation. We use this mic on our Bonus Feature Camera and often in a rush someone would forget to turn on the mic, but no more with the VideoMic Pro ... More

I purchased this for my Canon 80D for general area recording home video use, knowing the limitations of a cameral mounted mic. Specifically I wanted to capture and document our driving to WY to view the total solar eclipse (side comment regarding total eclipse - WOW!!!). I just turned on the camera and never touched again during the event - I was focused only on experiencing the eclipse, not on equipment check. The mic worked much better than I expected. I set my camera's sound level low and used the 20dB option on the mic. Although we were all around the tripod mounted camera and mic, but not any closer than 4-6 feet, it did a fine job of capturing our voices for a non lapel type system. ... More

The auto power feature is very attractive but it didn't work with my Canon XA20 or Vixia HF R72 camcorders. Rode does mention in its website that plug-in power is required from the camera mic input. I'm going to assume that those camcorders either don't supply plug-in power, or that the Rode shotgun is defective. The lesson, however, is to make sure a buyer reads the requirements carefully and makes sure the camera meets the specs for something like auto power. But trying to find out if a camera provides plug in power is not easy or even possible without a call to the manufacturer. Why do some cameras provide plug-in power while others don't? ... More

I did not open the inner plastic packaging container because comparing the mic to the camera it just looked too big for my purposes. I am returning it and purchasing a Sennheiser MKE 400. You can read all the reviews & write-ups to see the features & benefits, online. I worried over investing in this mic but categorically I can say, I'm not disappointed. Good clear audio is picked up from a distance 35' or 10m and the filters can boost it to something perfectly acceptable. Near audio is picked up with an impressive range and the build quality is good. I'd like to return in a couple of months with a more specific review.

I wanted to upgrade my D850 microphone and I'm very pleased with this Rode mic. It records 20-20k audio. It is a mono mic but I don't think a super cardioid mic would pick up much of a stereo image. The Rode has a shock mount that would be helpful to reduce noise from camera handling. The mic powers on and off with the camera. I recorded a live band with it and was pleased with the results. I've only used it on-camera but it could be used on a boom. Battery life is great for all-day shooting. Low frequency roll-off would be useful for dialog. I also bought a dead cat which I haven't used yet. ... More
