In the realm of outbound recording, mics are very much a give and take. You can pay a high price for wonderful sound, or you can pay a low price and get 'just audio.' The Rode NTG5 mic is a great, middle of the road microphone. The cost is manageable and you get a great sound. Paired with a good recorder, you get very minimal gear noise and hiss. If you have the subject directly in the mic's polar pattern, you are good to go and will have some awesome audio to work with for your creative needs. Rode is also a fairly attentive company, so if you need assistance, they are more than happy to help. Bottom line: If you don't want to break the bank but don't want to sacrifice quality, the NTG5 is a choice addition to any recording kit. As an indie filmmaker, this works splendidly for my needs and budget. ... More

I spent weeks (months?) trying to decide on a decent on camera mic for my C200. The NTG5 was my final decision and I am really pleased with it. The mic is very sensitive and has really strong output. It has no internal battery and lacks some of the bells and whistles some other products have but matches in that regard with much more expensive mics (EG the Sennheiser 416). Since the C200 has phantom power the battery thing wasn't an issue. The NTG5 has a very natural sound and doesn't have that radio announcer's voice at the bottom end. I looked at the Sennheiser MKE 600, the Deity, the NTG 4+ and an NTG3. The NTG 5 won out in the end because of the value. The sound is competitive with the others I looked at but it also ships with a Rycotte pistol grip, a cable, the standard foam screen, and also a 'dead cat' plus a mic clip for a stand or boom pole. It also brags a ten year warranty. It is moisture resistant and since I work outside all the time that is a bonus for me. ... More

Been looking for an affordable, but good sounding dialog microphone for awhile. NTG3 sounded good for the money, but a little boomy. Some Sennheisers sounded good, but cost $1000-1300. Then comes NTG5, similar to NTG3 by my ears but a bit flatter, not boomy, yet still warm and detailed. Rode may end up owning the market in anything near this price range, especially since the shock mount and deadcat are included. Congratulations Rode, it seems you have done your homework!

So far I have received 2 of these microphones and both have not functioned properly. First off it came with only 1 of the 2 shock mounts. Once I received the mount I moved the mic around and could hear a screw rolling in the barrel. I had it replaced from Rode and the second mic will only pick up static, rf type noise and cuts in and out of picking up vocals. If you have this issue return straight to B&H because I am told I can't get a refund now that my mic has a new serial number. Don't buy this mic, there are too many users who get duds. ... More

An excellent all around great shotgun microphone along with a bunch of great accessories. I could not be happier. The microphone sounds great! It is also very light and compact. I would definitely purchase again! I liked it so much, I posted a video on YouTube for it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljYELrNyr8Y&t=62s

This mic sounds great. Bought as a backup for my 416, pleasantly surprised by the sound and build quality. Haven't used it much yet but the while package is very solid.

Prior to the NTG5, I had the Sennheiser MKE600. Which was a very good mic, hands down. But, I really love the warmth the NTG5 brings to my audio recordings. I have a deep voice, so the warmth of the NTG5 may make me sound deeper. But, for most voices, I think this would be the perfect mic. I get nothing but clean audio, with little to no self-noise at all. Highly recommended.

We are working on broadcasting and documentaries productions, therefore a good microphone is the key of our daily work. Having used, in past sennheiser and other expansive and high quality microphones, we found the NTG 5 a great compromise between price and quality. I recommend this for film makers who are willing to increase the quality of their audio gear and not willing to spend higher budgets on a boom mic.

This is an excellent mic. I use it primarily on camera (C200) but also 'handheld' with the supplied grip to capture extra sound bites. Clarity is superb and doesn't seem to exhibit the boosted bass, radio announcer, that other shotguns seem to have. The mic is really sensitive so output is higher than other mics in this category. Overall, I'd say it is a great choice especially considering what comes with the location kit.

I bought this based on stellar reviews. But on first use it was producing static sounds like a Geiger counter. When I researched the problem on-line it seems a lot of people are having this issue. I trouble-shot and did an A/B with my old mic and the old mic was clean. The Rode was recording unusable sound. Maybe it's a design issue. Maybe manufacturing. But I'm returning it and will upgrade to the more expensive but reliable Sennheiser 416

I already own this boom and the internal cable can rattle if you move the pole rapidly. It's not a problem for slower movements or if you're mostly just twisting the pole. The mic itself is great. I'm about to order a second one.

Love this mic for hobby and professional use. Works great for voice over application as well as on a overhead boom or on a desktop mount. This mic is well designed to limit side noise or distortion. Fits nicely on my canon c200. Comes with wind sock and a variety of mounting hardware for flexible applications. Love my Ntgg5.

A few days ago, I wrote a review and thought I had received a lemon. It was a mistake. I have rectified my own mistake. I will buy and buy again and again. Best shotgun ever. I highly recommend this.

I was looking for something that would match as much as possible my Rode NTG3. Now that mic is in a class of its own, but this mic has come the closest. Great outdoor sound, blocks a lot of the ambient noise, it is 10X lighter than the NTG3 and the accessories alone that come with it (mount, deadcat) is worth it. Great build and great professional sound.

Amazing high-quality mic for low price tag. The sound is quite sterile, but it's pretty accurate and great noise to signal ratio.

Much more 'bass' than you may think. I don't mind it - it's clean and pro-sounding - but it doesn't really match up with most of the other mics I have, especially the lavs. Not a problem for most situations, just worth pointing out.

I did a lot of research before purchasing this mic and I am glad to say that I believe it was the right choice. The sound it captures sounds very authentic and full and the ability of it to block out sound from other directions is fantastic. I wish I had bought this sooner!
