Although Neumann has not published whether or not this is modeled after the famed 67 capsule, this small Large Diaphragm Condenser is another home run in clarity and accurate tonal response. About the size a standard computer mouse, this mic is the same high quality that can be expected from Neumann. In the 4 hours that I have owned this mic, I have tracked some of the most clear vocals that rival my work with my TLM 103 and U 87 A. This is a must have for any studio.

I have been able to gather a fair bit of experience with this microphone using it for vocals and as a spot mic for brass and wood winds. The construction is solid, the shock mount might be one of my favorites of any shock mount I have used - apart from the plastic thread. It is manageable in size and open towards the front. The microphone is very compact and takes relatively high SPL without a pad (which it doesn't have) which makes it quite favorable for live applications. Sonically I don't find it to be quite what people would like it to be. I would describe the overall character as rather unexciting. It is not an overly bright microphone yet it can get slightly nasty and gritty in the top end, for example when used on trumpet. Voice overs / vocals are being recorded with solid body yet with a rather steril character - the midrange always seems a little bit dull to me. The low-end reproduction is solid yet tight. In a direct VO comparisons having this microphone, a TLM 103 and U87i right next to each other (recorded simultaneously through identical preamps) I found the TLM 102 to be the most uninspiring of the three. The U87 literally sounded dark compared to the other two, but it yields a throaty, lively, open and mid-forward character that just sounds right on about any voice and many instruments. The TLM 103 sounded similarly dynamic to me yet way brighter and sibilant overall. The TLM 102 was a bit darker than it's TLM brother, noticeably inferior in all other respects to me though. I would recommend this microphone as a utility-type mic, in my opinion the expectations the purchase of this my-first-Neumann type microphone raises aren't fully met. Within this price bracket and choosing from current microphones I would rather buy an Audio Technica AT4040 or AT4050 which are solid performers and happen to be cheaper as well. As a point of reference: I have been working in recording professionally for 10+ years, currently specializing in tracking (studio), mixing and location recordings. ... More

Size doesn't matter...I'm a full-time voice over talent. Quality vocal gear is a must. This little mic is amazing! I was blown away with this mics clear. percise tonal quality. Much better than my Neumann TLM-193. The TLM-102 is proof that big things can and do come in small packages. Buy it, you'll be glad you did.

This microphone is an absolute gem. The TLM 102 is the Neumann entry level microphone. It is a large diaphragm, side address mic, very small compared to its relatives. It is solidly built, but light enough to easily mount for a podcast mic, and never seems to get in the way of copy. It is my favorite mic for voiceover, as it gives a nice smooth tonality. I love the way it sounds without compression or sweetening. After micing guitar and violin, I can say it does a fine job with stringed instruments as well. For a Neumann, it is quite inexpensive; however, for a home studio, it is pricey. Is it worth the extra money? Although it was for me, there are other mic's with nearly as good performance in the $300 range. For voice work, I really like the Audio Technica AT-4033a, although it is larger and heavier. The Shure SM7b is great if you're looking for a smooth broadcast sound. I have also used and enjoyed the Sennheiser MD421, especially when I wanted a slightly brighter sound from a dynamic mic. These less expensive alternatives are worth considering if you want high quality sound, but don't want to spend several hundred dollars more. Having said that, I love this little Neumann, and don't regret for an instant having bought it. ... More

Let me start out by letting you all know I've been in the professional recording game since 1969. Yeah, I have worked with the best of the best over the years so here we go.....You get an amazing classic Neumann sound from this tiny little bodied mic. Absolutely great on both male and female vocals if you like the "U87" sonic flavor which is imprinted on so many top hit recordings of the past 40 some years. Marry it to a Grace M101 preamp (for clarity and soul) or an API 512C (for in-your-face rock and pop) and your recordings will have that "big studio" magic. Despite having an internal windscreen this baby Neu-Neu is very susceptible to plosives so be sure to stick a Stedman Proscreen XL in front of it!!! Hard to believe you can now get a real Neumann for such an affordable price. I'm lovin' mine!!! Once more - the TLM102 gives you the classic Neumann sound and if that's what you like, then you'll like this mic!!!!! ... More

I'm a Multi-platinum music producer and have recorded with the best, but I felt so compelled to write about this mic. I a/b'd this mic against my U87ai and loved the TLM 102 more! Hands down I liked the sheen, top end and well balanced low end. What a mic. I own several vintage mics as well and even though the TLM wasn't as warm as them it had character for days! What an unexpected pleasure! I brought another. IMHO, this mic is pro sound in a nice Lil bundle. Hope this helps!

This is a pretty good mic. I have used numerous Neumann microphones and this is by far NOT the best. However, it is still a lovely mic. If you are looking for a mic with great clarity and that "Neumann sound" this might be a good option. The TLM 102 doesn't have the flattest response and therefore doesn't work on every source. I have certainly had vocalists come in and try the 102 and had it be unsuccessful. That being said, I have had pretty good success with others. Due to some certain enhanced frequencies, this mic can sometimes sound a bit boomy. All this being said, it is worth buying and returning if it's not the right fit. Experimenting is the best way to find you favorite mics. ... More

When I was in school we used the higher end models, but when I heard Neumann was coming out with something more affordable I was like kind scratching my head like what are they doing, but then again they do want to get there product in more people's hands. So I ask Reps From GC and what they thought about it after I did my home work, the response I got were all positive so I got one the other day and man I was surprised, I even took it to the recording studio work at here in Miami (Audio Vision Recording) and myself an another engineer did some comparison to the U67 and the 87, we could tell a difference, but it was very small of a difference that we used it for some of the clients work for back ground vocals and it was awesome. So in other words if you don't have U67 or 87 budget get the TLM 102, unless you want to put the others on layaway. oh the Sennheiser MK$ shock mount fits the 102 ... More

I'd previously been using the Rode NT1 as my primary mic, and I loved it. Booked and recorded lots of work on it. However, I have a midrange male voice with a solid amount of nasal resonance and found the NT1 too sharp for my voice at times and missing some of the balancing rich low end frequencies in my voice. The TLM 102 sounds just right. Great full low end, with smooth midrange for my voice. I hardly use an EQ it fits my voice so well. It's sensitivity is also great for my situation. I'm in a Brooklyn apt building. Admittedly I invested about $500 sound proofing and treatment (Audimute isole, and door seals), so my closet boasts a good noise floor (on average -55db to -60db), and the TLM 102 performs really well here. If I'm being really picky about my noise floor, it picks up a fair amount of low frequencies (fridge, elevator, passing trucks, heavy footsteps above me) that I won't be able to eliminate without a full on vocal booth. None of this can't be fixed with modest EQ or by recording at off-peak traffic hours in my building. ... More

Then I upgraded my gear to Rode NT1-A mic and subsequently with AKG mic, but was not getting the clear and natural vocals and have to do a lot of plugins/EQs. Finally, I got this Neumann TLM-102 after reading the reviewsand research. This is an excellent mic! Vocals are so smooth and natural. Need no or a very little EQ to get the perfect vocals. Very warm and strong vocals which allowsme to easily play around within the DAW. The recordings are no less than a high-grade professional studio. Noise level is approx nil (super quite) and with a pop-shield it works simply amazing. You won't regret the investment you do with this little master! I currently own a Neumann u87 and after a little subtractive eq and slight eq bumps here and there I have actually preferred the 102 over it for many applications. Out the box it reminds me of a voice over mic with its presence and heavy low end. I don't get as much sibilance with it compared to my u87. I have used it for hip hop vocals with great results with my avalon 737. This mic is extremely small and can fit in the palm of your hands or pocket. I also sold some of my larger gear and purchased a duet for ipad. I am loving how my gear is getting more compact. I feel as though the technology is allowing for a great sound in much smaller devices without sacrificing quality. ... More

After testing my new TLM 102, I can honestly say that it has an incredibly smooth and even sound. If you're looking for a mic that adds color or flattery to your source, this is clearly NOT the mic for you. But if you want a mic with solid low end, slightly mid-forward and rounded smooth highs, then this is the mic of your dreams. You can always add color by pairing it with a colorful preamp or using a bit of DAW magic. I am running my TLM 102 through a Blue Robbie and the sound on vocals is nothing short of beautiful. Very transparent, but not at all thin or harsh. Just warm and clear. Very 3D sounding. I would highly recommend this mic for any source. ... More

I bought mine in early 2013 and I love it. Every vocalist who has used it in my project studio has been very impressed by the sound and clarity, as well as engineers and producers who have heard it. I would definitely recommend this to anyone with some level of experience recording with condenser mics. It's very sensitive and picks up a lot, so you'll want to have some some understanding of the sound in your work space. As with any mic, once you mix your audio with this, it's professional sounding. My engineer won't even look at his audio technica when I bring this around. In my opinion one of the better mice available before you start getting into the $1K+ range and more advanced Neumanns. ... I've been recording narration for over a dozen years with a variety of mics (including Rode NTK, Shure sm7b, Oktava, etc), all in the $500 and under range. I always wanted to get a TLM 103 but couldn't justify the cost, so I read up on this little mic and decided to give it a try. This little mic is a stunner. My voice comes through sounding balanced and full (without a big proximity effect), and most of all with a CLEAN and very QUIET signal. Noise reduction and eq'ing just aren't as necessary. Love it!

This is my first Neumann microphone, so I can't relate it to the other, much more expensive models. But standing on it's own, this is a great mic. I hate to simply echo the words of other folks, but the sound IS very clear, natural and detailed. It's also very quiet. The small size of the unit may raise your eyebrows at first but once you get over that it's all good. I'm using the TLM 102 for home studio recording of vocals. Even though the studio is not specially treated, the TLM 102 does an excellent job. Its relatively puny physical size is NO indication of how excellently it performs. It feeds my Golden Age Pre 73 MKII, and the sound is to my fullest satisfaction. And the swift and careful shipping of B&H deserves a double measure of compliments, too.
