I purchased these headphones as an upgrade over countless sets of ear buds, after always being disappointed in the poor sound quality. Tried a number of sets at B+H, they have many on display that you can plug into your own devices, and settled on these as the best overall quality for price. A HUGE improvement in sound, hearing new subtleties in songs I've listened to many times before thru ear buds. My only complaints are that in summertime (now) my ears can get too warm; and that after prolonged use my ears do become sore, but I don't attribute that to these headphones in particular, it's always been an issue for me with over ear headphones. I bought the first generation of these cans years ago. I loved them but then they quit on me due to too many yanks on the straight cable. I'm a coiled cable guy, I found out. So I was glad to see they include a coiled cable with this. The build quality this time around however seems flimsier though, so durability is questionable. They do isolate much better than my Sony 7506 cans, which got me in trouble as far as monitoring a loud event and finding that the ambience and applause I heard so well live through the 7506 cans was just bleed, and was missing in the recording! Hopefully these cans will isolate much better for that. ... More

The sound quality of these headphones is good. Not very detailed and I wished for a little more close up sound, but for the price definitely good. The issue I am having with these is the lack of comfort. The headband applies quite a lot of pressure and the pads are not very soft. Typically I have to take them off after about 40min, rarely do I wear them for 1 1/2 hours - and when I do I have a slight headache and sweaty ears. In a situation where they would frequently be taken off or moved on the head it would probably be fine, but working away for a few hours with these on is not possible. Another issue with the construction is that they flip and collapse when taking them off, so putting them back on is always a pain. Construction quality seems good. Had them for almost three years now and they still look like new. Of course that's partially because I ended up not using them a lot, so that should be taken with a grain of salt. ... More

These headphones produce a great sound...just the right amount of lows, high and mid range. They are made for mixing sound to get a realistic mix. They are very comfortable too, not heavy and no pinching of the ears. I wouldn't call them "sound canceling" but I have no trouble with outside, unwanted noise when I'm wearing these and working Garage Band.

I purchased these headphones to monitor audio tracks for podcasts. They pack easily, have detachable cables (two are supplied), and are very comfortable (a little bit warm for my ears when I use over 2 hours). I purchased these headphones as an upgrade of Bose earbuds. Tried a Sony MDR-7506 at B&H, AT-M40X won. My only complaints are that in summertime my ears can get too warm; and that after prolonged use my ears do become sore, but I don't attribute that to these headphones in particular, it's always been an issue for me with over ear headphones. Worked on a song in the studio using the M50X's, fell in love with those. Then I received the M40X's as a gift. In my opinion these sound just as good as the M50X's & are just as well made, these are a bit more petite in size, which works great for me, because I'm a petite person. They sound extremely clear, have a great range ,dimension & deep bass. When I wear these I seriously can't hear anything out side of the headphones even with no music playing, so they have great sound isolation. I also like how you can rotate the earcups individually. ... More

I bought these because my previous studio monitor headphones, the Sony MDR-7506, were louder on one side than the other. These Audio Technicas have no such imbalance as far as I can tell. The thin pleather ear pads of the Sonys were falling apart too, a common issue with those 'phones. The ATH-M40x sound relatively neutral, which is good for mixing. They're neither too bassy nor too bright. As a hobbyist producer, I like the flat frequency response, sound quality, and detail of these 'phones. Aside from sound, there are also some other nice features. The earcups swivel and fold. The cable is detachable, so if it breaks you can just replace it. It won't render the whole headphones useless. For me, one drawback is the headband is tight. If you wear glasses, you really have to fiddle with the headphones to make them less uncomfortable. I haven't had these long enough to see how well they hold up over the long haul, but so far they're great for my purposes. ... More

I received the ATH-M40x pro headphones last week, and I've been listening to music every day on my computer. And I love the fidelity! The sound is so good on these headphones, that I look forward every day to using them also for my Premiere Pro video editing sessions. I can't wait to see, or hear! how they'll be for creating sound environments for my movie clip pieces.

2nd time repairing these with BONDIC plastic weld. What I must say is that stuff is awesome and the first repair is holding up well. Now I just welded the other side. I like the sound from these, but have been wearing headsets for many years. Most of them have been less expensive models that never break. Why build these so cheaply is beyond me. These broke within a couple months and I am not rough on my audio equipment in my home studio. I will never order any that are built like these. You can watch a video showing how great they are, but if a tiny single nub of plastic breaks off, they are useless. I will order a different headset that will last. Thanks to plastic weld, these will become a backup set. ... More

I use these headphones for listening to music while I study, work or commute. I really enjoyed the sound quality of the headset: everything else I have owned (including a couple of entry-level Sennheisers) is blown apart by the sheer clarity of sound. I listen to a lot of guitar instrumentals and the quality of playback is beyond excellent. One of the downsides of the headset is that it *seems* to have an average build quality: the weak point seems to be the pivot of the cups and I have winced a couple of time when trying to collapse the headset: no damage so far, though. ... I bought these to replace a pair of M30 headphones that lasted 5+ years of heavy use. Build quality is very good and sound is good too. There is some noise isolation, but probably better choices out there if that is your goal. The folding cups take some getting used to - handy for collapsing the headphones in the included bag, but somewhat awkward when you put the headphones on and off.

I was looking for a decent set of headphones for work, but didn't want to spend as much as I did on my ATH-M50x's. These fit my need perfectly. They drown out the surrounding cubical noise (even with quiet music playing) and they are comfortable enough to wear all day. Obviously, at roughly half the price of the M50x, you're going to sacrifice on the sound a bit. The M40x doesn't have as wide of a frequency response, the bass is definitely less pronounced, and the high end rolls off a bit sooner. The M40x is noticeably lighter than the M50x as well, so that probably explains some of the loss on the bass end. Still, the sound is good for casual listening and it keeps me in a good mood, listening to tunes and focusing on my work even if my coworkers are chatting all around me. ... More

I'm a Production Director for a group of radio stations and I mix audio all day long via headphones at my workstation. I've used ATH-M30s for my production staff for years. Needed a new pair for my own monitoring and mixing on my workstation. The ATH-M40x are incredibly light weight and without a doubt the most transparent I've EVER used. I will be buying more!

My first pair broke and were repaired many times from the piece of plastic the holds the swivel of the headphones. Even so, they are extremely reliable headphones (Bought the old pair like 3 years ago, and still work, they are just very beaten up) and at a very decent prize. If you don't want to deal with the hassle of reinforcing them constantly then go find another pair, if you don't mind go ahead.

Tried several pairs (at the store) in this price range.. I kept coming back to these and finally decided to buy them. I have been incredibly impressed with the comfort and sound of the headphones. Many of the other choices at this price were either too thin in the highs or lows. This pair had a full dynamic range that is very pleasant. Great bass, clear highs, and great supporting mid range. Get these while you can.

I am using these headphones to edit video at work. I typically wear them at least 2 hours at a time up to 5 hours. I have a pretty small head and i feel like they're a little tight under the ears. I can't wear them for more than an hour without taking a break. They are cushy but not quite as comfortable as I would like. Sound quality is great and I love that it comes with two different types of cords.

The quality of sound that you get from this headphone is insane. Humans can only listen to a frequency from 20 to 20,000 Hz, and this headphone delivers that frequency. The only thing that I don't like is when you put them on, for about 3 to 5 hours they start to feel uncomfortable, get annoying to wear. Overall the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x are great headphones for music production, listening to your favorite movies/videos, pretty much anything that you want to listen clearly this are the headphone that you want to get. You'll 100% not be disappoint,

I got tired of cleaning up my plosives and siblings using just my MacBookPro speakers (pretty good for a laptop, but ...). So, I looked at many reviews for a reasonable priced set of headphones to do the trick and settled on the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x.
