I finally had a chance to get this mic and the AT 897 I also bought out into the field for testing. I mounted both on a Canon XH A1 video camera using XLR inputs without attenuation and the mic levels on the camera all the way up. I was shooting birds in trees 30 to 100 feet away and did voice testing of myself a few feet in front of the camera. I'm pleased it had clean sound quality and good range with pretty rich voice pickup at a few feet forward, and much more ambiance further out. While it's what I expected of a shotgun, I've listened to cheaper mics that don't have as clean of a sound pickup. Most noticeable were the evenness of sound levels across the spectrum. No booming lows (the cutoff filter was not on) or lost highs. It does have a back lobe that picks up as expected in a shotgun. I did notice the back lobe, but then I had the volumes max'd out. Excellent side rejection; I was impressed at how moving off axis levels dropped off considerably. Compared to the 897, the 8035 was about 20% hotter with volumes on my Canon XH A1 peaked out without attenuation on the XLR inputs. It's also longer than the 897 by at least 3 inches, so when mounted in the fixed camera shotgun mount, the end of the mic could be seen in the widest shots. I plan on mounting it on an accessory shoe mount above the camera. I expect it'll be well out of wide shots. This isn't a 416 copy, nor does it try to be. But for the price it delivered good quality sound on my tests. ... More

Purchased this mic to use for video production and I'm very happy with it. Set up on a stand, aprox 4 feet from our actors, the mic picks up sound as clear as any lavalier mic. Voices are clear and very little ambient sound is picked up. Because of our shot framing, the mic picked up both actors, so it saved having two lavalier's on set, with their wires, batteries and mixer. Mic was used with a Zoom H4n recorder, which also supplies phantom power. The lavalier's have already fallen to the bottom of the audio gear bag, as this mic is a great replacement, and it makes it so much easier for the subject being recorded, not having to hassle with wires or transmitter packs. Just make sure you point it at your speaker's head, preferable their mouth, it has a fairly tight pick-up pattern. Seem's very well constructed. I have an Audio Technica lavalier that's twenty years old and still is holding up, so I'm expecting that this shotgun will outlive me. Under con's I listed Heavy bulky. Nothing wrong with the mic, but if you put this on a boom on a mic stand, you better use a sandbag on the stand base, or the weight of the mic can tip the stand over. ... More

For the money, this mic is great. Exceed My Expectations! I first used the mic on location while filming outdoor cooking show. The mic was able to pick up every sound detail, water boiling, chicken frying, etc. The chrisp sound detail added alot to the production. At one point, someone started up a leaf blower about 75 feet away. The host of the show keept right on talking. With the mic on a boom pole about 5 feet away, he could be heard clearly over the leaf blower in the background. My only complaint would be that the mic is so sensitive that don't think I will be able to use it mounted directly on my camera without some kind of shock mount. It picks up every bit of camera handling noise. So, if that's your plan you should get shock mount also. I am using the mic with a carbon fiber boom pole and the Rycote S-SERIES WINDSHIELD/SUSPENSION 450 KIT. ... More

Used with Canon XH-A1 HDV camcorder for family event capture and in noisy environments. Very good directionality and sensitivity with reasonable noise. I shot video of our dog running around the yard chasing a ball and the audio of leaves rustling beneath her feet and her breathing is clear and crisp up to distances of 20 feet without a lot of extraneous noise from airplanes overhead. I'm very happy with the quality of build and it's light enough to not add much weight to the camera. It's too long to keep on the camera in the camera bag I have but this can't be helped if you want a very directional shotgun mike. ... More

I purchased the AT8035 after considering many shotgun microphones in the same price-range and no other microphone is as highly rated. I use this for short film productions and the quality is superb. GOOD: Length, interchangeable threads for mount, great off-axis noise rejection, gold-plated XLR plug, runs on phantom power OR battery (included). BAD: It can pick up harsh echoes in large rooms where they occur... but that is typical of this kind of microphone.

I do private undercover work and just bought this mic to video a potential cheater. I was able to pose as an average guy filming in the park from a distance while the mic picked up the conversation with pristine clarity. Buy this mic now and watch your video come to life! I got paid big time. Alright, it was my wife but this mic literally paid for itself and a new house and car.

I had an EPK I was doing for a band, and when it came time for interviews I was loathe to use the shotgun mic I had, which had a really high signal to noise ratio, and very weak pickup. Someone offered for us to use this instead, and after I plugged it into my Tascam DR-60 II I was blown away. No perceivable signal noise, crisp vocal pickup. Even more surprising, we were using this indoors which is not a recommended environment for longer shotguns, but this handled it quite well. A great budget option.

I previously owned the AT897 (NOT the 897R) because I typically mounted it on my video camera for better audio. While the 897 was better in that it remained out of the view/frame of the camera, the sound generated by the 8035 is better by far. The 8035 has a fuller, richer sound with greater depth. The highs and lows possess more clarity. In my opinion, the sound generated by the 8035 is worth the extra dollars compared with the AT897. (I have no experience with the AT897R model, however.) My current, primary use is that I record my collegiate mathematics class lectures and I use this microphone to capture classroom discussions. I am very pleased with this purchase! ... More

I've used this mic previously as a handheld and currently camera mounted (for field doc shooting). The sound quality is top notch -- clearly picks up the voices I want while reducing the noise that I don't. Despite its longer length I still find the best one stop shop option for my purposes -- I use it primarily with a shock mount attached to my shoe mount, though I've gotten an extra shoe mount attachment to replace the camera's (EX3) mic mount in order to use both an on board light and mic. The shock mount is really essential to this setup. Makes solo shooting in noisy environments problem-free. ... More

We use the 8035 mic for recording audio interviews through a Zoom H4n recorder and also plug the mic directly into video cameras. It has a great range so we don't have to have the mic uncomfortably close to the subject. The audio quality is terrific.

I was a bit skeptical when I was looking at this mic online because of the low price, but it performs really well! I use the mic for low/no budget comedy videos and the sound comes out with minimal hiss or white noise. Perfect kicking your low budget projects up a notch!

I am a minor league baseball broadcaster and use the mic to capture the sounds on the field. In most stadiums, it is set up just outside the radio booth window, located behind home plate and up a level. It still captures the crack of the bat for a hit and gets great crowd noise.

For the money, it does a very good job. Nice clean sound with little to no echo. There is a setting to futher improve the cancellation of echos when shooting in smaller areas. I definately recommend this model for people looking for a sub 300 dollar mic. You certainly get bang for the buck with this one.

While on a modest budget, a microphone is something that a small investment should be made. This works well within those means, and works well with the gear we had. Using a Canon XL1s with an attached MA-200, the microphone performed admirably. Getting the sound we wanted wile negating the noise we didn't want. An overall good choice.

Is this perfect. No. Can the average person hear the difference between this a one costing 3 times as much. Nope. I shoot talking head videos and interviews both indoors and out. For me works better than a lav. Does exactly what I need. I feed it into a digital recorder and the output is then fed into the main camera (5DIII).

The AT 8035 is a very good shotgun mic for general purpose field use. It's sensitivity and response allow quality recording while it's modest price means you won't lose sleep if it happens to be damaged. If you plan on using it outdoors, plan on upgrading the windscreen.

I bought this because my previous shotgun mic was causing too much hissing in my audio. This mic causes no hissing when paired with an audio recorder that has preamps with high enough quality to support it. Very happy with the quality of this product.
