Dont get me wrong, it is a great all around condenser/cardiod, but for some reason it sounded particularly better for lower frequency vocals. Of course for its price and class it gets the job done flawlessly. Nice, accurate sound.

Ive been a professional narrator for more than 30 years, and this is my 3rd AT4040. The mic is robust; build quality is top-notch and performance rivals any other Ive used. Resulting audio is very crisp, thanks largely to the low-cut filter. I dont really use the -10db pad, but Im sure it would be useful in other environments. The AT4040 is a real workhorse. If youre looking for this sort of quality sound at a reasonable price, I dont think youll do better.

I use a pair of these mics to record a grand piano. The sensitivity and range can make it challenging to find the right placement, especially with a piano that can make a lot of extraneous noise like an older action or loud damper release, but once you find the sweet spot these are really great. I've also used one for VOs in documentary work I do as a filmmaker and it's surprisingly good with a decent pre. Super good construction and shock mount, case, etc. Overall, I think these are the best deal going in a low price condenser mic and are a steal at the price. ... More

I've had my eyes on this mic for some time. A friend of mine has it in his home studio and I've always liked how my voice came across on it. I compared it to other mics above its price range i.e. the Baby Bottle, AKG C214, Shure SM27, and the AT4040 just sounds better on my voice. I'm running it thru an Apogee Duet 2 into Logic Pro and I think the quality is stellar. I see no reason to upgrade anytime soon now that I've purchased this one.

Best used as a close-source instrument mic (acoustic guitar, piano, voice) It has a generally flat response that makes it handy for a wide variety of tasks. There are switches for a -10dB pad and high pass filter which could come in handy when capturing high SPL sources or to clean up mud. It is a massive step up in quality from the bargain condensers so if you're looking for an upgrade from one of those, you will not be disappointed. That being said, $100 more will get you the AT4033, which is, in my opinion, the best bang for your buck condenser on the market today. ... More

I needed to buy a lg condenser for my home studio. After studying reviews and a try out with a demo I bought the 4040 about 3 years ago. I'm not an expert on condensers (this is my first) but I like how my voice sounds recording with this mic and thats all that matters-right??

I love this mic! As with other microphones in Audio-Technica's 40 series, this microphone is very sensitive and has very low noise. It has a frequency response curve that gives it a beautiful personality for vocals, both male and female. This is also my favorite mic to use for voice overs and narration on film and video projects. This microphone costs much less than the AT4050, and in my opinion it is a much better value. Multiple polar patterns are just not that useful, at least not for studio vocals. Heavy, durable construction (for a condenser). Includes a shock mount that works. Sadly, the case doesn't hold the mount. ... More

Excellent mic! Great feel & depth. I use it with a Boss BR900 CD 8 track recorder for voice over work and it sounds great! The quality on playback is exceptional and sounds like a much more expensive mic. I really can't find any drawbacks especially after hearing about issues with the Shure shock mount bands. Good job!!!

I have been recording extensively with this microphone from bass/baritone male voice to female delicate voices, needless to say it's a highly detailed response for this price range, it's flattering in most tones without coloring too much your sound, it's been a joy to use and I seriously considered purchasing other models but couldn't be happier with my choice. Thanks Audio Technica and B&H for outstanding structure and in-store service that made me do a good choice for my needs

I have tried out the AKG C214, AKG P220, AKG P420, AKG C3000, RODE NT1-A and the Audio-Technica 4040 microphone. The AT4040 is by far the best of the bunch. With a flat response and transparent sound across the board this microphone is a graet choice for vocals and acoustic guitar tracks. I would highly advise this well built and sturdy unit from Audio-Technica.

the AT4040 was a great upgrade from the perception 400 that mic was very muddy and I had to do alot of eqing with that mic but the at4040 hooked up with the presonus eureka pre amp made my artist vocals Cristal clear, the highs were very pleasant, the mids were great and the bottoms were solid, so if you want a great mic and on a budget this mic will get the job done, will be upgrading to a Matte Black, Mounted Neumann TLM 102 Condenser Microphone.....

This mic fits the bill for the all around studio mic. I purchased it for voice over work but it sounds great on guitars and other acoustic applications. I believe it is the best large diaphram condenser in this price range.

I am using these mics for podcasts. the AT 4040 is a definite improvement, clear audio. There are slightly better mics for the $1K range, but for me, the quality of the story is a stronger contributor. I cannot discern a difference except in a strict side by side comparison, and it's a subtle difference.

The sensitivity of this product is exceptional, and while the basic product isn't as "warm" as other microphones I've worked with, I'd describe it as having a significantly more crisp recording capacity. I use this product in tandem with a VoxGuard, and a metal pop filter for optimal quality. Thanks AT for making such a great product!

with my voice I need all te help I can get, and this mic is just right! Hearing myself clearly while singing and keeping my true vocal tone intact, for me, is not easy, I suck at studio singing!! This mic makes it work for me. I can just sing and not think, and not worry about how I am hitting notes, and the clarity and responsiveness of the mic does the rest!

My first mic was a 1999 ADK A-51. As much as I liked the sound (and still do), I purchased my AT-4040 from GC in 2007. It has since become the workhorse for my recoding. I continue to use the A-51 in my secondary studio, but the studio that I spend the most time in, houses my 4040. No selectable pattern, but the low cut filter and -10db option makes it a great buy.

I was using an AKG dynamic mic in my home studio, and I bought this to get a more crisp sound to my voice. From the second I turned this on, there was a noticeable difference, and it sounds extremely accurate. I am using a reflection filter and an Alesis USB mixer/preamp. Definitely recommend this mic!
