This microphone is nothing short of incredible, especially given the price. It is a beautiful piece of art in your hand. It feels solid and well-built. It has the most uniquely beautiful finish I've ever seen on a microphone before, but its sound is where it really separates itself from the pack -- It is smooth, full and detailed. I'm especially a fan of the low midrange on the Aston. It is an absolute wonder on acoustic guitar, in my opinion. The fingerpicking a good acoustic sounds warm and vibrant. And the Origin handles vocals beautifully too. I've needed very little EQ when tracking vocals with the Origin. I ended up buying another Origin and used them as overheads. The Astons create big gorgeous drums. I own and have used a lot of excellent mics. Telefunken ELAM 251, U47, U67, AKG C12, 414 ULS, AEA N22 are some of my favorites. Each has its specific use given the particular recording situation. The Aston absolutely hangs in the pack with those aforementioned mics. I'm really amazed and happy that someone has finally really hit the ball out of the park with this mic. If you are considering a good versatile cardioid LDC for your studio arsenal, the Aston Origin is a no-brainer. ... More

Very surprised I'm the first person reviewing this mic. I really love it — I just bought my second one, in fact. To me, the Aston Origin embodies everything great about what's happening in microphoneland right now: it's made with care by people who are passionate about audio, it has great construction and a thoughtful design, it sounds great with no hyped frequencies, and is priced for audio pros who simply can't drop a grand on a mic. (But if you wanted to drop a grand on Origins you could take home FOUR of them.) Its tone is clear, present, detailed, smooth and relatively flat to my ears. No spiky highs here. (There are plenty of decent shootouts on YouTube so I'll spare you any more adjectives.) I've been using them around the studio to find my favorite applications and I have to say they've performed well in most scenarios — quiet or loud, near or far. Shouting male vocal, whispering female vocal, acoustic and electric guitars, drum overheads/rooms, bass drum reso head, even used them as the top and side mics in a Glyn Johns config and really liked the result. Very versatile. Features include 80Hz low-cut filter switch, -10dB pad switch, and internal pop filter (which does the job most of the time). That's a pretty handy little feature set, all rolled into a tank-like metal chassis. Bottom line, if you're looking for an LDC — whether it's your first or your fifth — I'd say the Aston Origin is a no-brainer. ... More

This mic is so transparent. Even when recording using only a cheap interface with no corrective EQ or Compression it sounds as if you are in the room with the instrument/singer. This is my go to mic in my locker and have yet to hear anything in this price range that can meet it's capabilities. Thank you Aston!

In the past, I've owned the Rode Classic, Rode NTK, Neumann TLM 103, and currently own an MXL Revelation Solo, Neumann TLM 49, and Rode NT1. The Origin is easily as good or better than any of the mics that I've owned up until now. It's amazing what you get for the price! Unlike the TLM 103, which sounds almost hyper-real, the Aston sounds completely natural. It was love at first-listen! I was intending on buying another 103, but since I bought the Aston, what for? It's that good of a mic! Ignore the price. This mic takes me further on the dollar than any mic I've ever used. I was a little concerned about the SE Electronics connection, because I had tried and returned a quite lackluster SE mic in the past, but this little mic wipes the floor with the SE mic I tried. And, unlike the new Rode NT1, which is a pretty good mic for the price, the Aston doesn't make you feel like you wish you were using something a little better. It sounds GREAT!!!! After experiencing what this mic can do, I can't NOT get the Spirit! ... More

in a prior review I raved about this mic. the same holds true , but for some strange reason it says I wouldn't recommend this amazing new product which is completely and totally inaccurate. not only would i recommend this mic but i fully endorse it and think any professional studio who doesn't own one is severely out of the loop

You couldn't ask for a much better microphone without spending double or triple what this one costs. Before buying I listened to some YouTube condenser microphone tests, try it yourself. I only use it for recording voices but the audio quality is excellent. The only complaint I have is that the built-in mesh pop filter doesn't block P, T, F, B, etc. plosives but I didn't expect it to work as well as a traditional filter, and I certainly didn't choose this mic for that feature. I got the free shock mount in the mail as well and it is very good quality. I'm quite satisfied. ... More

For $299, it is a good, if not great microphone as a first mic, a backup, or even as an another option in your mic closet. I bought it to see what it was like and it is pretty open sounding and good on acoustic instruments. In a mix it will work, and that is what really matters. However, when I listen to it against something with pristine quality like my Gefell M300 it just sounds kind of cheap, even though I hate to put it like that. There is just a little something missing from this microphone that only a high end microphone will provide, and that is not surprising. If you are a professional and/or can spend the extra money, I recommend going with something like a Gefell or Neumann because it will be a better investment in the long run. But if you only have $299, then stop reading reviews. Just get yourself an Aston and start recording! :) ... More

The Aston origin has been a complete game changer for me. It works on virtually every source, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and of course vocals. This mic makes a vocal cut and sit right in the mix. Throw some traditional eqing on it and it's the complete wow factor. People probably think that at this price point, it can't be as good as some of the big boys in the industry. Those people are terribly wrong. This mic should be in everyone's collection, it is a workhorse and in my opinion will eventually become an industry standard. Thank you Aston for making such a great and affordable microphone that sounds as good as as it looks. ... More

These mics are amazing on just about anything but truly excel as drum over heads (ORTF, Glyn Johns or spaced pair.) They punch well above their weight and compare favorably with many mics over $1000 - Neumann, AKG, etc. Crazy value for money. Get a pair and you won't be disappointed!

This mic sounds amazing! It has a clear, natural sound. It has fairly heavy focus on the treble, but it doesn't overtake the other frequencies. This mic is also built incredibly well. It really feels like it's going to last a long time. As far as its features go, I think its highpass filter might be a little bit harsh for some applications, but I think you could use it for vocals and acoustic guitar and get pretty good results. Also, it does have a built-in popfilter, but I don't think it does a good enough job on its own. I would advise using another one as well. Doesn't have to be expensive. Overall, this mic is amazing. Especially for the price. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good mic for music, voiceover, and other tasks of similar nature. Great mic! ... More

I bought a pair of these as drum overheads after listening to a review on youtube. I've been using them as drum overheads for about a year now. I still think they do an excellent job. Although I usually close mic the whole drum kit, I've been experimenting with a 4 mic drum technique with just the kik and snare close mic'ed. After a little experimenting, I have found the Origins to work really well in this application. I've also tried using them on acoustic guitar and vocals. Results have been good, but they seem slightly harsh sounding on the top end; very usable but not my new favorite. You kind of get what you pay for when it comes to microphones but these mics really are an excellent value. ... More

This microphone is incredible. I have many more expensive large diaphragm condensers that I haven't touched since buying this from B&H. Also, it looks awesome, and gets plenty of compliments in my studio. It's crazy to be able to compare a $250 microphone to others that cost 10 times more - but you can with the Aston Origin!

This is a great sounding mic definitely better then anything in its price range. This mic can compete with some of the best mics when it comes to sound quality. The reason I gave the mic a 1 star is because my mic worked perfect for about 5 months then it started making a humming noise. At first I thought it was my room or another piece of equipment. I have 4 mics this is the only one making that sound and again it never made any humming noises for the first 5 months. My mic is still under warranty so I was just gon send it in and get a new one right!!. Not that easy the only number you can call is a number in Santa barbra California which is the distribution center but they never answer or return messages. I emaild support no response. New mic new company I get that but they have no real support in the us I have no way to use my warranty to get a new one. ... More

I have use this mic on vocals, acoustic instruments, guitar amps, percussion. It shines in multiple applications. For the money there is no reason to look else where. This thing is built like a tank and performs like $1k+ condenser mic. Order the shock mount with it, add the Halo and you have best portable vocal booth all for under $650.

I have been running a home a home studio for 15 years. When I first saw the Aston Origin, I thought it was just a new gimmicky mic. I met with the owner and after some research decided to try it out. I am now trying to sell some mics that cost twice the price. I use them for vocals, acoustic, room, and most importantly for me drum overheads, I am super excited for the new small diagram pencils. I recommend these to all my customers and sell about a dozen a week!

Aston origin large diaphragm condenser mic, seem like this mic adds a little warmth to the track, mainly used for distorted guitars, use many misc to add texture and character to my guitar tracks. Overall this mic is an excellent value and is comparable to expensive sought after mics used in the high end studios. I would recommend this mic, very diverse and useful in many situations, from vocals, drums, acoustic guitars and electric guitars to name a few… high quality and great value.

Glad I went with this over some of the other choices out there. This has a nice transparent sound that I am still dialing in, but it already has my vote. Using without the roll-off right now at the recommended distance per Aston. Might try with the -10dB pad and roll-off a little closer to see how it works. Very happy with this for recording vocals and would recommend for an 'enthusiast' home studio.

S's are a little harsh with this one, but if you have a husky-sounding singer you need a bright mic for voices like that and this is nice for such applications. It sounds GREAT on acoustic guitars and as drum room mics.

I bought a pair of these for drum overheads. They were replacing a pair of SDC AT-4041's that I used to use. These have completely opened up the sound. For certain types of music, I no longer feel compelled to direct mic the toms. These do a great job of picking up the whole drum kit. They sound nice and open on acoustic guitars, too. Easily worth every penny of their cost.

I use it on Acoustic Guitar, Vocals, and drum overheads and it sounds great. There were some audible radio signals being picked up through the mic but it was most likely due to a weak power source or ground issue.
