This interface should come with a warning: you will spend 6 hours trying to achieve 2 things: get the Apogee to work, and not brick your monitor while doing so. So breathe deep, put the brick away, and ease into 6 hours of shoulder shrugs, cursing, and "just walk away"... because when your done, the sound you'll get into your DAW is completely worth it. The pre-amps are great! I can compare this to the Focusrite pres, which are quite good (I recorded my Irish band with them, and I thought they did great). But the Apogee pres are GREAT! Tony the Tiger great. The Apogee website is NOT great, and it takes some navigating particularly if you buy this used. You still need to register to download the software it needs, but getting there isn't as straightforward as you'd think. There's two portals, one asks for a of your purchase reciept and the other asks for a generic registration... It's not rocket scientist, but I'm a bit of a knuckle dragger and found it hard. Generic Registration is what you want. Then install it on your computer. Then start your DAW (Logic Pro, in my case), and start Maestro (the Apogee software you just downloaded) and sit in amazement... as nothing useful happens. It's astonishing. If you've ever tried to get a commercial printer to remember what IP address it lives at, then your close to the joy of getting the DAW and Maestro to cooperate. BUT... SPOILERS... I'll tell you what I did that worked: Fire up the DAW. Fire up Maestro. Then unplug and plug in the USB from the APOGEE ONE in the back of your computer. This forces a re-boot of Maestro and then all of a sudden they've found eachother, they love each other, and will make beautiful music together. I have written on my Apogee One, in marker "Unplug & plug back in" so I remember how to make functionality happen. Once you get past the Mensa/IT test, everything is good. The mic pres make your stuff sound really great. I use the Z in for my guitar direct (through a maze of effects pedals), and I record my banjo and my Martin with it's onboard condenser. It SOUNDS lovely. I'm super excited about using it as the over head mic for a drum set. With something to grab kick, I should be able to get a simple capture of the entire set with the Apogee. It makes recording really fun, and if you've stumbled on a live sound you like... this thing captures it wonderfully. AND... get a good pair of headphones (Sennheisers HD 559 in my case), because the pre for the output is fantastic as well. I'd almost recommend hooking your external speakers to it except... yeah, sometimes it gets finickey and you have to physically reboot it (unplug and plug back in). If the ease of set up matched the ease of use, and recording quality, it'd be 5 stars and cost even more money. And for 300$ for two inputs this shouldn't be a problem that exists. BUT... if you see one of these used, buy it. Kiss one sunday evening goodbye as you navigate it's whooly software distribution architecture. And then you'll be off to the races. ... after you unplug it and plug it in again. ... More

Perfect for GB demos and sketches

Apogee ONE USB Audio Interface Review

Apogee ONE USB Audio Interface

Easy to use with Mac OS and GB. Solid hardware and very small footprint. Nice sounding preamp and convenient to have phantom power available, as well as the built in condenser mic. The physical interface (one knob and 2 mini level meters) is actually pretty intuitive and easy to use when you're recording. I mainly bought for 3 reasons: made in USA, built in condenser mic, and compatibility with iPhone/iPad. I really only use GB to make song sketches and demos, no "pro" recording, so the built in mic is PERFECT for laying down vocal patterns and melodies--no need to drag out a mic and XLR cable. I'm guessing it's also a better option for recording practices than the iPhone mic--although I haven't had a chance to test that out. Haven't had any big problems with the software, nothing unplugging and plugging the unit back in doesn't fix. The software, like the unit, is intuitive and pretty straightforward. I still haven't felt the need to set it up to optimize the monitoring to reduce apparent latency, which I guess could mean the plug'n'play latency is not that bad--again, I am not a pro by any means, but other reviewers might address that topic. It's a niche-y product for sure, but the small size, built in mic, and compatibility with GB and iOS make it useful for folks like me who are more interested in getting song ideas together and jamming, rather than serious home recording. Minus one star for Apogee being so unclear about the types of connectors required and then charging way too much for the Apogee-branded cables. FYI, a generic mini-USB to full-size USB cable will work for a typical laptop connection; however, you'll need the Apogee power supply and what I guess is a proprietary Lightning to mini-USB cable for iOS devices. And, last but not least, the One requires the special Apogee split connector for 1/4" mono and XLR connections--there aren't jacks built into the unit. It's a little cheesy, and kind of takes away from the "small footprint" pro, but the connection is solid and I haven't had any issues with it coming loose. Again, it's a niche-y product with a couple of trade-offs, but works well for folks just wanting to bash stuff out on GB and have it sound pretty decent. ... More

The Apogee One is an easy to use all-in-one interface for any Apple device that allows a USB input. I currently use it on my iMac with Apple's Garageband software where I can record vocals, acoustic guitars, electric guitars or any other instrument that can be captured via the built in condenser mic or 1/4 phone jack. In addition to the 1/4 input the breakout cable includes a standard din plug for connecting an external mic. The One also features 48v phantom power for connecting an external condenser mic. All of these features allow me to record vocals and acoustic guitars with clarity and warmth and Garageband allows me to easily double and multitrack parts for more professional sounding tracks. All-in-all at this price point the Apogee One was definitely the way to go. The one drawback is that you can only record one track at a time, but with a little diligence you can create very satisfying tracks. In the future I will probably augment this set up with an Audio-Technica AE5100 condenser mic and upgrade my software to Logic Pro but for now this set up works great! ... More

Whatever the merits of the hardware may be, I can't say because the software is a nightmare. For OS Catalina, per Apogee, you have to run the installer twice. And restart twice. This is the 21st century: restart should not be required. And to have to do it twice? Lame. In any case, I did all that, only to have my machine freeze up the second I launched the app. As for iOS, forget it, the app is rated so low on the Apple App Store I didn't even bother. Apogee's how-to vids are for iOS 5 and 6, and so are useless. And the one for Mac OS is from about the same time. So, perhaps, Apogee, an update is in order? Not sure what good it might do: about 5 years ago, I bought an Apogee Duet and had much the same set of problems in terms of the software being a hot mess, and swore I'd never buy another Apogee product. Compared to a wide range of other interfaces I've used (Steinberg, Tascam, Roland), this is the worst: everything else I've tried has been plug-and-play. This unit plugs just fine but it sure don't play! ... More

This little interface is really top quality. Whatever chips it’s got inside really capture and translate audiophile fidelity sound into GarageBand or any other DAW for professional quality recording. The built in condenser mic is very nice and allows for two track recordings as well as stereo on a single track which I use a lot on my acoustic guitar with the pickup on channel 2 and the ambient on 1. This captures the full sound of the guitar like no other setup I’ve used. The headphone amp is also amazing just for listening to any music. Looks like Apogee may not be making the iOS version of this anymore, which is a shame because paired with an iPhone or iPad this really is a pro quality portable studio rig. ... More

If you're like me, and you want to record real instruments (but only one at a time), this is a great interface. I get zero latency monitoring through the headphones and can play along with the rest of the song spot-on. I've been using the instrument in for direct bass, but the mic ins sound great too. The best thing is portability & speed of setting everything up. I'm not going back to a 1u rack audio interface again; I love the One. I may pick up a Duet in the future, however, to use alongside the One.

Ive had no issues whatsoever, it does exactly what its supposed to do, and thats all I hoped to get.So, if your looking for an inexpensive way to record, without settling too much on quality, this is a very goody to go. While connected to computer (USB) it is becoming little warm.I hope it is not a malfunction.Supplied softwares functionality is slow and clumsy, but still those cant be reason for me to rate it for 5 star.

I wish I had snagged a ONE a year ago… with apple lightning capability and a built in condenser mic, my intent was to use this as a one-up from the iPhone mic with quick PA setups. Also being able to add a real RTA measurement mic was better still. Too bad it’s not powered thru the lightning cable, but that’s far from a deal breaker. The first time you use it as a headphone amp, you’ll know something is different. The converters are superb. I won’t say night and day, but cloudy day to bright sun is more like it.
