Excellent IQ. Heavy.
I find no fault with the IQ of this lens. Excellent sharpness and bokeh. Nice build quality overall. The AF noise is definitely there, but I think less after the A7RII firmware update and perhaps becoming quieter with use (perhaps I'm getting used to it). My sole complaint is that it is simply too heavy for me. It's like having a brick attached to the front of my A7RII. I have had nagging second thoughts/regrets about choosing this lens over the lighter Batis 85. I fear that the weight will contribute to blur when I use it hand-held.

A very special piece of glass!
Razor sharp, outstanding bokeh, vibrant colors. Couldn't be more happy with this new portrait lens. Just outstanding in every way. My only minor complaint would be that the AF is a little bit noisy. Kind of unexpected. It really bothered me the whole first day that I shot with it. To be honest, I barely notice it anymore. I probably wouldn't use this lens for video because of the AF noise. I may rate lower than 5 stars had I purchased this glass for video use. For portraits, it's simply amazing. Period.

Fabulous portrail lens
Works like a charm and produces beautiful portraits and perfect bokeh.

Absolutely superb
What a fantastic lens right out of the box. All the accolades you may have read are accurate...gorgeous resolution, beautiful bokeh, nice ergonomic feel. No regrets here, superb portrait lens, loaned it to a friend that shoots for an ad agency, oh yeah, he's gotta have it.

Stunning Results
I'm sure you've read the internet controversy already: The lens is loud. It's scratched inside the lens barrel. Sony can't autofocus. etc. etc. etc. If you can tune out the noise, literally and figuratively, this lens could be perfect for all your portrait needs. I won't lie. The autofocus is loud in a silent room and noticeable in the recording if you're using the on-camera mic. In any real world still shooting environment it's completely unnoti... Show More

Noisy lens
This lens was way too noisy on my PXW-FS7 camera. Picking up lots of focus noise. Sending it back for credit. I'll go with the Fujinon zoom instead.

Best 85mm lens that I have tested
I am a photography instructor and have been using this lens to teach my students recently. It is very well built, first Sony lens I have seen with true weather sealing like the Canon L lenses. Focuses faster than the 85mm 1.2L II from Canon. About the same size so when you put this on as the Canon, also note that the Mirrorless idea of lightweight cameras goes out the door when you put this on and you are back to DSLR size and weight. Out of the 3 new GM lenses this is the best bang for your buck.

Three major problems with this lens
I was really looking forward this lens, and preordered it as soon as B&H would let me. This is an exceptionally well made lens in terms of its mechanical construction. It has the look, feel, size and heft of a very expensive lens that you would expect to see on high end pro DSLRs or a medium format body. p It is a bulky and heavy lens, but I have no problem with it: after all, it is an 85mm and an f/1.4, and a full-frame lens that has to draw an ... Not ready for prime time
The lens captures beautiful photos and the bokeh is exceptional. Unfortunately, I will return my purchase and wait for Sony to fix the issues. The motor is loud but seems to quite down after some hours of usage. The problem I am facing is the lens makes a percolating sound like a coffee pot when in AFC mode. It also vibrates a bit when focusing in AFC mode. I am surprised that this was not discussed in any of the reviews by the Sony artisans.

audible noise while focusing
On my Sony A7R2 updated the camera firmware to version 3.10. I noticed a decrease in noise on my copy. Still louder focus than most lenses

Sharp fast and amazing
I got this lens to do portrait and it did its job. It has great color and dreamy bokeh. I have read reports of noise from the lens when it focus, this one was fine. The speed of the focus is good, hunts a little wide open. But, it is f1.4 and the eye focus on the A7rii makes it easier The quick portrait I did at the park turned out great

The new heavyweight Bokeh King
Just got my Sony 85mm f/1.4 G Master today. As expected, it is really big and heavy. The total weight including the lens hood and both caps is 905 grams. It comes with a really nice case that has a belt loop and removable shoulder strap. The autofocus makes a little bit of noise. Not loud enough to bother me personally, but be aware it is not a silent lens when using auto-focus. The fly-by-wire manual focus ring works surprisingly well in my opin... Show More

Excellent lens!
Extremely sharp at f/1.4 and an excellent companion for the Sony a7rii. Just received it yesterday and performed remarkably well during my first photo session. To confirm it, see the photos posted. Just did a basic edition in Lightroom and judge by yourself.

Autofocus Noise 2
Just to follow up on my review that I posted yesterday, I updated my a7rm2's firmware to Ver 3.1 on the day that it was released and still have the autofocus noise problem. So it does not look like a firmware issue. In addition, I mounted the lens on my a7s and a6000 with the firmware updates to Ver 3.1 and hear the same noise when I focus. NOT HAPPY AT ALL. Great IQ but Noisy Internals while focusing
Few things I noticed after spending 2 days with it. 1. Internals rub and create audible noise while focusing. 2. The focusing speed is not exactly mind blowing. 3. My copy seems to back focus just a tiny bit. Otherwise it is an awesome lens, solid feeling, great image quality, and the heft reminds you of the canon 85 1.2, but slightly bigger. The noise issue seems very wide spread, I'm waiting for Sony's official response to see what needs to be done. I'll add that the focusing sound has significantly gotten less over a day worth of use.

Autofocus Noise
I just got it today and found out that my copy makes a weird noise when I focus. I found a youtube video that demonstrates exactly the same noise problem that I have with my copy - https://youtu.be/tcNpIj0g43k I am going to return my copy and probably going to get Batis 85mm instead. So disappointed.

Well Built, Sharp Fast Glass
I was able to spend a decent amount of time with this lens at Sony's Press conference yesterday where it was announced along with two other G Master lenses and the A6300. When I first picked it up paired to an A7R2 I was surprised by the weight. At 1.8LBS its a bit heavier than Nikons 85mm 1.4 and close to double the weight of the Batis FE 85mm F1.8, but still lighter than Canons 85MM 1.2 monster. After using it for a bit I forgot about the weigh... Show More
