Gorgeous true 4K, Heat S/D totally avoidable, Fixed focus NP

Aug 18, 2019

WHY BUY THIS: (1) You want a sharp 4K image that can look good cropped up to 200% in post, (2) You want better low-light video, (3) You want high-end DSLR level controls on image. (4) Surprisingly good in-body mics (great as back-up audio). WHY BUY A GOPRO: (1) You want stable hand-held video, without thinking about it. (2) You don't optimize camera settings for your shooting conditions. (3) You either don't care about audio (i.e., hobby/vacatio... Show More

Its a concept camera

Feb 26, 2019

These are first thoughts as Ive had mine only a few days. Bought it because I already use the Alpha system wanted a go anywhere 2nd camera for when the 1st camera (A7RIII) is too bulky or too likely to be damaged. Though this will also compete with my iPhone for a pull out of the pocket go anywherecamera. This is an experimental concept camera, it easy to see the engineers at Sony giving themselves a design brief of how small can we make a water... Show More

Disappointing

Apr 28, 2019

I am a pro still photographer/cinematographer with a lot of high end Sony cinema gear. Ive purchased just about every Sony POV camera that they have released and one has been better than the next. The news of the RX0II release was very exciting so I pre-ordered one and had plans to order several more after some testing. The quality of the manufacture is wonderful. The menu system is not very intuitive and was pretty frustrating as I tried to get... Show More

The Little Box That Could...

Jan 10, 2020

Ive been preparing to start a YouTube channel for low about 2 years now. Been doing the research (like most of you) regarding cameras, lighting and sound. Never in my wildest dreams did I realize not only how important light & sound are, but that it would take me down a path of information that I did not realize existed. (astonished music!) When it comes to cameras and all the words that go alone with it I am like a dog with its head tilted to th... Show More

Good concept, but misses the mark as a vlogging camera

Jul 3, 2019

After some real-life testing, I have concluded that this camera has some major technical issues that greatly affects its usability, particularly for vlogging. Although many of the boxes on the perfect vlogging design were checked, there were also some major issues such as the lack of continuous autofocus and some distortion on the 24mm lens (should not happen at this 35mm equivalent focal length). The lack of continuous autofocus is even more cri... Show More

Great little package, but too many compromises.

Nov 8, 2017

Some thoughts after one week of use... -great image quality at base iso (125) -great robust construction. -not the same chip as used in the RX100 series as people had mentioned during the announcement. this one is only 15mp. -finally raw files in a camera of this size -no lens distortion -no PlayMemories apps. wish there was one for built in time-lapse. -f4 was probably chosen for balance of speed and depth of field on the 1 sensor, but its too s... Great camera if you know what you are buying

Aug 10, 2019

This is a great camera with a number of disadvantages when you compare it to a full size video camera. The size alone dictates that the camera has compromises in its ease of use and some functionality. But, for the right set of circumstances, it is great. I have used Sony equipment for thirty years and have always been satisfied. I bought the camera for some specific purposes and it has worked well in those situations: biking, kayaking, hiking ... I exchanged a GoPro Hero6 for the Sony RX0

Feb 9, 2018

The Sony has significantly better image quality (Sony 1080p looks better than GoPro 4k), more latitude for color correction and no image distortion. If I want stabilized footage without a tripod, I'll have to use a gimbal. However, while testing the Hero6 I concluded that this is also true of that camera, whose stabilization is subject to corrective jitters and simply not what it is cracked up to be. For me, and while it requires an accessory fil... Show More

Do not sleep on this camera. A must have in the toolkit.

Apr 17, 2019

While the first RX0 was revolutionary, there were still many limitations that made it a tough sell for many hobbyist photographers. In order to get the best results, it required a pro set up (external recorder for 4K, as well as an external monitor to actually see what you were recording, and a gimbal to stabilize the footage). I know this because I shot a short film using only the RX0. Sony gave me the new RX0II to test out and heres what I thin... Show More

Don't buy it. Overheats, overpriced, overhyped

Nov 6, 2017

I was pretty excited about this product, until I started using it. First off the menus are cumbersome to navigate on a tiny screen with tiny buttons. Users of other Sony cameras in the alpha series will find the menus familiar and will have an easier time, but still total hassle to figure out. Pairing with the play memories app, wasn't too bad, (though I am mildly concerned as to why I get so many warnings from iOS about the security of whatever ... Show More

Overall excellent, with some critical missing features

Jun 18, 2019

The good: Excellent dynamic range, shoots 4K s-log 2, super tiny, practically indestructible, flip-out screen is very handy The bad: Battery life is atrocious (4K especially). Bring extra batteries. 4K footage has *painful* rolling shutter. Basically unusable if the camera is moving. *No continuous autofocus shooting video.* This one is a big issue, and basically immediately disqualifies this camera from a wide variety of applications it w... Menu not ready for prime time

Jun 6, 2019

I had hoped to use this instead of my Sony RX100 and downsize a little on my outdoor adventures. Unfortunately it lacks the Scene Selection wheel of the RX100 and therefore every time you want to switch from video to stills you are taken to Sony menu purgatory. It may take 10 or 15 punches to get back to the Scene Selection menu...and you have to look for the tiny little filmstrip next to the Scene name to know it's video. Even worse on the tiny... Not bad

Jul 16, 2019

I purchased this camera about a month ago and overall its great little camera. Takes very nice still photos and the 4K video is also very good. I just wish that it had a wider lens like the GoPro that I also own. But my biggest complaint about this camera is I wish it had a bigger viewfinder, Im 59 years old and have close to 20/20 vision but its still a little hard for me to navigate through all the menus. Hopefully Sony or a 3rd party vendor wi... Show More

Lots of bang for the buck!

Jun 18, 2019

I've only had it a week but so far so good. Menus are easy to get through and read when you are connected via your phone or iPad in my case. This camera has a sweet sensor and the software inside to make this a real pleasure to play with. I just ordered the Back Bone Gear lens kit, so I'll be able to put my Canon SLR lenses on it. I think I'll also get an external 4K recorder (Blackmagic) because the camera gets mighty hot after a short while. My... Show More

image quality in low light is BAD!!!

Oct 25, 2017

I was waiting for this small beauty to replace all the bad action cameras that are available from GoPro and competitors. I was looking for a small HD camera with low light capabilities and with an external power option and video out plug. This 1 inch sensor for some reason gives very bad image quality inn low light (both in video and still modes). not sure why but the completion is poor and you can actually see the pixels blur... I have a bad back, which prevents me from carrying around a heavy camera all day. I have been looking for a super light-weight camera that does both great stills and video. With the new Sony DSC-RX0 II, I found it. The adjustable back screen really makes this camera work. The mic jack is an excellent addition. On the downside, the menu letters are too small and hard to navigate. The RAW format is too oddball. Bluetooth and WiFi are hard to set up... Show More

Perfect combination for my uses

Oct 30, 2019

This camera isn't cheap when compared to GoPro or other action cameras, but it takes far better pictures and video. When compared to other 1 point and shoots it's similarly priced, but it's far smaller and easier to deal with for travel, outdoor activities like hiking, trail running and biking. So far battery life and heat haven't been an issue. This little camera successfully replaced my GoPro, DSLR and point and shoot as the only thing I bring along for any activity and for how I use a camera in 99% of scenarios I couldn't be happier.

Such promise, such disappointment

Feb 12, 2018

I am a huge fan of the Sony A7S and A7R cameras. I use them for all my videography, and most of my photography. I pre-ordered an RX0 as a replacement for my GoPro. I was so excited to get a high-quality image out of a tiny camera. My excitement was dashed immediately by an overheating shutdown about 6 minutes into my first recording. I let it cool down and tried again. Overheated again, in a 68-degree room. $700 for a camera that simply doesn't work? Please, Sony, please please please fix this in a firmware update. Please.

Future cult stills cam

Mar 27, 2018

Used for stills, I really believe the RX0's sublime simplicity makes it more versatile, not less so. At least that's how it's worked out for me. Use mine almost daily, often as my A camera. I'm very pleased with the images, and people are generally amazed what "that little camera" can do, but it can be hard to display the images on a scale big enough for the amazing detail to even show. The Zero has revived my love of photography at a very basic level! Great product, and the accessories I've gotten are first-rate also!

Amazing and Terrible

Nov 27, 2017

The amazing: So cool and tiny. 4:2:2 4K image out of the HDMI out is worth way more than its current price point. Waterproof 1080p in Slog2 is pretty amazing, as well. The terrible: When connected to its app, it overheats almost instantly. The battery life is also terrible. The focus is miserable. Buy it if you have the cash. Don't buy it if you don't. I toss it in my kit to use as a C or D cam and will continue to do so despite it's many flaws. Sony will probably address some of these flaws in a firmware update.

RX0 is way better than the GoPro

Nov 11, 2017

Unless you need a fish-eye/wide-angle lens, the Sony RX0 is the small action camera you want to buy. If you need a wider lens than opt for the GoPro. Pro: Great Lens Slow-motion modes Includes most of the functionality that a Sony Mirrorless deliver. (e.g. slog-2 picture profile) Cons: Buffer time in 480fps and 960fps modes Poor quality at low light conditions
