lovin this lens
The first thing that will strike you when you open the box is how large the lens is. 72mm lens cover size. Its not heavy, just large. If I want to go compact with my NEX 6, I will use my kit lens. For me the size of this lens is NOT an issue, but many NEX owners bought the camera for its compact nature and may find this a deal breaker. Weight of the lens: I have installed the supplied Sony neck strap that came with the camera. It is relatively na... Show More

Not Suited for Video Work
I bought this lens to fill in the wider end of the focal range on my Sony PXW-FS7. I also own the fabulous 28-135 G lens, so I thought this lens, being a G lens, would also deliver images to the same standard. I was quite dissapointed by both the image quality and the operational difficulty due to the lack of mechanical iris, focus and zoom rings. Starting with the image, it's okay in low contrast situations, but if your scene has high contrast (... Show More

Pretty decent reality lens for FS7
I bought this for mostly reality / docu / ENG work with my FS7II. I needed a native E mount lens that could live on the camera body for the majority of the work I do. I had previously been using my Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens and that did the job for a while but I didn't want to keep having to use my stills lenses for video. Also, having the EF - E mount adapter adds unnecessary length and bulk to the rig. This 18-105mm f/4 lens is a great rep... Show More

Versatile for video or video+photos, w/ FF or APS-C camera
I purchased this lens primarily for video, with added benefit of being able capture some decent photos when there is not enough time to change lenses. I did a lot of research before purchasing this lens, and it exceeded my expectations. I needed a lens with greater zoom range than either of my existing FF zoom lenses (24-70, 70-200), and higher image qualify than my old 18-200 crop mode super zoom, and something which would not add too much weigh... USING IT WITH A SONY FS7
Using this lens for independent film work. I purchased this lens along with a Rokinon Cine 12mm as the first two lenses for the newly purchased FS7. I love the Rokinon you can read my review on this site. I like the Sony. I just could not pull the trigger on the Sony 28 - 135mm kit lens- it's got a lot of features and reasonable quality glass, but two many negatives, so I thought I'd give this lens a try. It's useably wider though with a little l... Show More

Great lens for auto focus. Not manual.
I'm a documentary filmmaker, and red all the great reviews of this lens, which I concur with all. Affordable, fairly compact, continuous aperture, sharp, sharp, sharp. Fast auto focus, works well with my FS7 and incredibly well with my a6500. Why 4 stars? You CANNOT manual focus this lens. It is impossible! I thought my copy was defective, then I turned on autofocus and voila! Sharp. Now if you do interviews like me you can't have your camera on ... Show More

Not for NEX FS series of cameras
I bought this lens with great anticipation. It was the perfect fit and size for my Sony NEX-FS700. I had a 72-77 step-up adapter lying around that made this lens fit perfectly into my Vocas MB-250 mattbox. Made in heaven I thought. I was thrilled at this point. I soon found out after firing up the camera that at about the 50mm point the lens started to distort the image inwardly. Sort of the slimming lens people jokingly ask for. If you point the... Great for video. Stills are just OK Overall better than kit
I purchased this lens new for a very good price. I read all the reviews and so I decided that it may be time to try it out. I found that the lens works really well with all auto focus modes on the Sony A6300 and the Sony A6500. It is good with manual focus but not really great. What I did not like was the lens went back to 18mm when you turn the camera off. What I do like is that the lens does not extend like some of the other zoom lenses. What I... Show More

Works great on my Sony Nex7
I have been waiting for this lens for two years. I always wanted more zoom range than the kit lens has and I wanted a variable power zoom for video. This lens let you zoom the normal way, by twisting the lens or you can zoom using the switch. With a little practice you can get very slow (dramatic) zooms. I mean really slow. Very cool. You can also zoom quickly when you need to. It does take a little practice to get the results you want. The lens ... Show More

Updated - pincushion distortion
I am updating this review, having read reviews from others. This lens does have very noticeable pincushion distortion at mid and long focal lengths. However, this is instantly and fully corrected in Lightroom 5 by scrolling (in Develop mode) to Lens Corrections and clicking on Enable Profile Corrections. Impressive that immediately with December 15, 2013 release of this new lens, Lr5 recognized it and had software for corrections. That's why Lr h... Show More

not perfect, but good value
I bought this used from BH a couple weeks back. I bought it for video work and so far I'm really glad I went for it. The best feature in my opinion, besides the fixed f/4 aperture, is the stabilization. It works AMAZINGLY. I can make a hip slide look like I was using a real slider. Even handheld at 105mm is acceptable. As for downsides, I'm not in love with the power zoom. Initially I was afraid I wouldn't be able to zoom as fast as I wanted, but... Show More

Great for NEX 6!
This lens may not be good for the FS series cameras, but it is great for the NEX series. The NEX cameras have a menu item that lets you correct for CA. shading, and distortion for certain lenses. They all work with this lens, however the distortion item is grayed out because it is always on. You never see any distortion before you snap your picture like in other E lenses, which process the correction after the shot is taken. This lens corrects al... Show More

Don't let the four stars fool you!
Because five stars would represent perfection, I won't go overboard with exaggeration. Having said that I have owned this lens for many months now and use it on Sony A6300 bodies, mainly for video. That's not to say it isn't a great lens for photography because it certainly is and I have used it for that as well. It is very sharp and just has a very professional look to it. On the video side I couldn't be happier. The zoom is internal so there is... Show More

Great Lens on my Sony A6000
I just sold my used 18-105 to a friend, thinking I wouldn't need it anymore, but miss it too much so just ordered a new one from B&H. It is true that the stills are not always as sharp as a Prime lens, but they are sharp enough and the video capability is amazing. I'm certainly not wealthy by any means and can't really afford the lenses I crave, but I have enough with this one to cover most things. I have a Sigma 30mm F1.4, a Rokinon 50mm 1.4, Sa... Show More

This lens was sold out for a long time, but when it came back in stock it was worth the wait. I bought it for my Sony a6300. First, the build quality and construction of this lens is simply amazing, especially for the very affordable price!!! I like that the autofocus and power zoom are very quiet. This lens is definitely made for video but takes very professional stills. For video is was perfect but I did notice some vignetting during stills whe... Show More

Versatile all in 1 lens
This is my only lens with my Sony A6000. I was looking for something with a bit more range than the kit lenses as well as a fast enough lens through all zooms. Matched with my high expectations of the Sony A6000, the combination of body and lens exceeded my expectations in terms of quality of the pictures that came out. Coming from an old Nikon D70 (dslr), I was hoping for a faster zoom (I never use the power zoom, as I find it slow) and faster f... Show More

Excellent lens
This was purchased (1) to give me a longer lens for my a6000 than the kit lens, (2) to get the highest quality single lens covering medium wide to medium tele so I can go out with one lens (after all, a major reason for mirrorless is light weight), and (3) to have a fast lens for hand held telephoto. All this without weighing too much and still having motorized zoom for the occasional video. (2) and (3) argued for the 18105G instead of one of the... Show More

Great Lens
Purchased this lens to use with a6000 mainly because it covered the same approximate range as my Canon 24-105mm 4. I've been very pleased with the lens so far after making about 200 prints. Lens is lightweight, sharp, focuses quickly and easy to use. Although the power zoom works just fine, I would prefer a manual zoom, especially since the camera always defaults the lens to 18mm on startup. Do not buy if:
The version of smart remote current as of 6/6/16 both ios and android versions will not allow usable remote control of the zoom function of this lens. Holding and/or repeated tapping the zoom icon in the app only results in the most minor -- nearly imperceptible -- change in zoom -- the absolute lowest zoom speed the lens can perform. Other reviewers have described this as a large heavy lens. While it is larger than other NEX lens it balances on the camera great and not really that heavy. This is a very well designed and built lens. Have used this both for photo and video on a NEX-7 with super results. Clearly SONY wanted a lens that would satisfy both still photographers and the ones shooting video. I my world, thats not possible in any way. That said, this is the best so far, and I have indeed been around! Not super fast, but there is NO ramping and on cameras like the FS7, just raise the ISO. Its very sharp, even in 4K. Very nice all around lens
This lens is nice but large on a APS-C E mount camera, A6500, A5100, etc. It weighs almost a third more than the 16-70mm Vario lens and is almost 1.5 inches longer at wide angle. One advantage it has on the 16-70mm is that all zoom is internal so the lens stays the same length at 18mm and 105mm. So, it is not an inconspicuous street shooter lens at all. It is, though, a very nice, well built, fast focusing, QUIET, lens that will be on my A6500 pr... Show More

UPDATE: Great value lens even for FS-700
Just and update to my earlier review from a little over a year ago. I originally kept the lens because my NEX-EA50 had the correction for the pillow distortion built in, even though it didn't work for the NEX-FS700. Well I'm glad I kept it. Now there has been a firmware update for the NEX-FS700 (700r to be exact) that corrects the distortion as well. This has now become one of my go-to lenses for ENG work.
