SEL30M35 is a budget-friendly Macro Lens
How I use the product I take photos as a hobby. I mainly use this lens with Sony a6000 and the duo works well. I also use the SELP1650 with an extension tube but I found that this lens produces better results. Things that are great about it 1) Relative to the 16-55mm kitlens, it is noticeably sharper. 2) The color rendition is very pleasing; it eliminates the greenish or yellowish tint from photos. The overall image quality is excellent. 3) Tru... Show More

Didn't compete against Zeiss Touit
I had to send it back. Plus...that 30mm focal length puts you too close to the subject for me...at maximum magnification. I do mineral shots and push for max magnification and color contrast. I'm sure the lens is good for lots of things but not for drab beige rocks...like cement or concrete where you really need your colors. The colors were more or less the same as if you were pushing a lens with 30mm of extension tubes...just a little less bold than you really want...but then I'm comparing it against a 50 mm Zeiss touit macro.

A fine lens, but lens caps keep breaking
I've had 2 Sony lens caps break in the last few months. Come on Sony, you make a pretty good camera, how come you can't make a lens cap? They are cheap plastic.

Great for close up shots. Perfect for product shots.
I needed a macro lens to shoot products and was looking for a good used lens. It just so happened that the local camera shop had this lens just traded in so I jumped on it. This lens works far better than using the extension rings on say a 50 mm 1.8. I get fairly quick and accurate autofocus with this lens. If what you are shooting is dark, then focus is a bit erratic. Best to have good lighting while shooting macro. This lens only comes in silve... Show More

I most certainly would buy similar Macro lenses made by SONY
Perfect for taking very tight photos of plant and flower blossoms. Have used it extensively on our late-blooming Xmas cactus. Takes top quality shots of intricate parts of each blossom. I have also shot some amazing shots of plant leaves which look like rolling waves.

Seems solid overall
While I haven't gotten to use the thing extensively, but I've been satisfied thus far. As some of the other reviews mention, the AF is a bit sluggish, but its not unbearable. I'd recommend it if you're looking to do some close up stuff.

Super sharp lens
I just switched from full frame to Sony A6300 as my travel camera, and the 30mm Macro is a very good addition to my collection. Tack sharp, great focus, light (good for travel) and inexpensive. Can't go wrong.

I bought this to fool around with close focus in my dotage..
First things first: -What we all call macro lenses are, with a couple exceptions, perhaps better named optically optimized close focus, (OOCF) if you will, because macro means larger than life (look it up). So, 1:1 is the threshold of macro. This quibble brought to you by an old geez whose only other experience with a macro lens was the legendary but ineptly named Micro Nikkor back in the day. And it required an extension tube to get 1:1 reproduc... Show More

Incredible bang for the buck.
OK, so not perfect, but very sharp in the center and surprisingly does not lose much sharpness when stopped down quite a bit. I admit to my snobbery and often think that if a lens docent cost a thousand or more it can't be all that good. This little macro proved how wrong I could be. My other macro is a 100 for full frame dSLR EF mount. I like that I can get physically closer with this 30 (effective 45 on the crop, but of course the other system is great as well and I certianly won't be abandoning dSLR. I've only sold one and given away two cameras in 50 years of photographing.

Super sharp but autofocus is just horrible
Super sharp macro shots! This is fun to play with. The E mount doesn't have many native options, and this is affordable. The only negative is that the autofocus is just horrible. I don't know why, but it constantly focuses all the way in and all the way out before it finds a spot (which is usually not what I want). It's extremely slow. Maybe I got a bad copy, but I didn't realize it at the time since it was one of my first lenses and it's too late to exchange it.

Use for nature, product, general photography. The more I use it, the better I like it. Super sharp.

Great Macro Lens
Very sharp photos with this lens. Lightweight. Very good build quality. Autofocus is not quite as fast as some of my other lenses, but not bad, especially with focus setting on spot. I typically use manual focus when shooting close-up shots.

OMG this thing is SWEET!
This lens will be on my person whenever my camera is. This lens is sharp, photos are crisp and clear. I can use it for macro or just plain shooting. The bokeh is very pleasant and the depth of field fully open is spot on! Way to go SONY! I really don't have any Con's to write about. I'm going to love this lens!

Nice Macro lens
Purchased lens for Sony A6000 for still and video macro shots. Very good lens for the price. Quiet, light weight, and fast with good light.

This is the worst Macro lens, wasted 3000 images
Absolutely worst macro lens I ever had. I'm so disappointed, wasted 3 days of work and over 3000 images!. It does not shot what you select in focus, it pics randomly one very small part of the image as focus and puts everything else in blur as dept of field. It could be edge of leaf somewhere in the corner of image and the rest of image dramatically blur. I'm very upset as I will not have opportunity to shot again what I was shooting and I just d... I like it a lot
I have not shot this lens much but I am very happy with the results so far. Looking forward to shooting more to realize the full potential of this lens.

Very sharp and light
This lens is incredibly sharp, especially around f5.6. I used it for jewelry photography and couldn't be happier. It's also very light and portable.

Nice, affordable macro lens
I just received this macro lens for my a6000 and from what I've seen so far the macro images are great. I won't be using it as an all around lens, but think I'll be pleased with it for macro especially for the price.

A great macro lens
I bought an A6000 and this macro lens a couple weeks ago. the short focal length gives great depth of field. I had previously used a Canon 100mm L series, and thought that I needed the longer focal length to keep from shading out the subjects but this works great.

Great Little Macro Lens
I added the SEL30M35 to my assortment of e-mount lenses, because I needed a macro for my a6000. Construction quality is outstanding for a relatively inexpensive lens, and I've been getting fantastic results shooting JPG's and letting the camera handle the post. (The a6000 does such a great job with in-camera processing that I never shoot raw with any of my lenses.) Very good DoF for a macro when shooting at F4.5 or higher, and capable of producin... Wonderful Lens!
This is a wonderful lens and the price is great. I am not a professional photographer by any stretch, however I am a jeweler and metalsmith and wanted good pics of my jewelry that I create. I love that I can get really close up pics that show great detail. For me, I was always trying to get the correct angle and lighting and just leaving the nex-5 in the auto position. Well some pics would end up in macro mode but most of them did not, so I was n... Show More

Fine macro capabilities
While you can use this lens as a 30mm walk-around lens, that's not its best use, as it's a bit soft, especially around the edges of an image. But as a macro lens, it's wonderful. It focuses close. Although it's billed as a 1:1 macro, I've consistently been able to photograph at greater than life size. The outside of the lens is made of plastic (except for its camera mounts, which are metal), so treat it gently.

A good sense, for a great price
The 30mm macro lens from Sony is an interesting lens, that takes a little bit of work to get the most out of. Overall it is very sharp but it it requires care and attention to detail when taking pictures because the depth of field can be quite narrow while at the same time very, very close to the subject. For macro work, I'm not sure you could do better for the price. The 30mm F3.5 makes the lens good for other photos as well although it struggles more as a jack of all trades.
