Good camera, still on the fence

Apr 13, 2015

I'm a photography enthusiast, but thiis is not how I pay my bills. I work a full work week and do photography on the weekends and some evenings. I've only used Nikon cameras before trying this camera (D90, D610, D800). I do all types of photography, street, travel etc. I've had the camera about 2 weeks so far. I really want (am still trying) to love this camera, and overall its a good camera, but there are some things that I think potential buyer... Show More

Amazingly capable camera!

Apr 12, 2015

I'm really enjoying this camera. The build quality is excellent; like the solid feel of premium cameras made back in the day. It's very compact and has a nice heft to it (which I also like), but when it comes to extended use feels more like a feather around my neck compared to my D700/800. It's perfect as a back up body or for the hiking kit where space is limited. Stop down metering with a non-OEM lens is painless due to the EVF, it simply adjus... Show More

Not Good

Apr 2, 2015

Dark spot on images. On a 4 x 6 print, the spot is about 1/16 inch in diameter and is located about 1/3 of the way in from the left and a little more than half-way down from the top. Apparently this is a sensor defect. Not good for a very expensive camera. I would give it 0 stars if that were possible.

Just returned my A7 mk2. Out of the box I was surprized how heavy it is, just 5 onces less than my Nikon D750, and considering that the lenses are all pretty much the same weight as my Nikon lenses (50mm and 70-200 f4 are identical in size and weight) I can't see much advantage. I had really hoped to use this body for my Leica lenses but it's such a hassle to focus wide open then close the lens down to shoot. ok if you're on a tripod but any sort... Show More

Switching to mirrorless from DSLR

Mar 25, 2015

I am switching from a Canon 6D to a mirrorlesas full frame. My main reason is size and weight. I have had GREAT results with the 6D with my go to lens the 24-105L. However, the combo is bulky and not conducive to travel photography/video and family snapshots. Others have commented on how Sony has rocked the foundations of digital a bit and I agree. This is not my first sony camera (my wife uses an RX10) and have had really good results. I say up ... Show More

Great Camera, but Rubber Eyepiece Tore!

Mar 18, 2015

This is an outstanding camera - I also have an A7 and a couple of RX-1's. The Sony mirrorless full-frame cameras are clearly the market leader. BUT, the new highly-flexible rubber eyepiece tore, with NO mishandling, and there is not even a replacement available - not from B+H not from Sony. Very disappointing. Fortunately for me, the A7 eyepiece fits (less flexible and made out of more solid rubber) so I can use that until a replacement emerges. Sony site reads sold out on the replacement part so clearly there is an issue.

I just love my A7ii! I sold my Olympus OMD EM5 to get this. The hardest part was choosing a lens...I stayed away from the kit lens and got the 55mm f1.8 and I am in love with this combo. Nothing like a little foot zoom. I did have an issue where my EVF kept blinking a green light and I had to send the unit back for being defective; but BH photo was great handling the return. I also purchased the flash kit and extra battery with charger. The handl... Show More

Quite simply the amazing image quality!

Mar 11, 2015

The quibbles first, the SD card door appears to have a mind of its own and quite often I find it open, much to my dismay. It seems only a matter of time before this puppy inadvertently snaps off. I'm sure it's me and the way I usually sling two cameras about. Also the lag time, not so much the shutter, but menu interface, it just seems slower than I expected. As others have mentioned the shutter makes much more noise than I expected, but not all ... Show More

Great Camera!!

Mar 4, 2015

I have had this camera about 3 weeks now. Did not want to write a review until I had taken several hundred shots with it. One quick thing, I am not a professional photographer. I just am really picky about the shots I take. That being said I have taken a ton of pictures with many different settings including auto and manual. While some have not been the best due to my own skills I am very impressed overall with the shots I have taken and there ha... Show More

Almost great

Mar 2, 2015

I'd been holding out for this - but I'm let down now. To switch from manual focus to any auto focus mode, you've got to go through the menus. Crazy, especially since the auto focus is inconsistent and slow. The kit lens is really among the worst kit lenses around, full of distortion even at 70mm, and just not really sharp. I bought a metabones 4 adapter for my Canon lenses, but found that unlike their advertising, the Canon lenses just hunt - and... Show More

Nice updates make a great camera

Feb 28, 2015

1) It feels great in my hand. Grip, shutter, dials all feel right to me. I particularly like the AF/MF button. Build is solid (might be a bit heavy for some mirrorless users, but I like the heft). Definitely less bulky than my Canon 6D.2) Same sensor as my RX1, so no surprises there. Great dynamic range, decent high ISO performance (although not in the same league as a7s). Looks sharp although it has a (weak) anti-aliasing filter. Much better sen... Show More

Best Camera under $

Feb 27, 2015

Great camera. I came from the Canon DSLR world and am never looking back. Figured out the interface pretty quickly and the button and control customization is fantastic. The photos from the kit lens look great and am looking forward to trying out the 55mm Sonnar lens. Video capabilities are amazing on this camera. As others have stated, battery life is pretty dismal compared to DSLRs so I do recommend buying extra batteries. Also the lack of a separate charger is just not acceptable at this price range.

First impressions

I am a new enthusiast. First camera which is the a6000 which I like and is wonderfully light. Added the a711 for a few reasons. Seems like most of the best lens development is focused toward the FE platform in the future. Love the in camera stabilization, but also some little features. Got it with the 16-35 wide angle zoom. Like the auto APS-C mode so I can use my APS-c emount lenses. The one button that allows a quick autofocus while in manual f... Show More

Beautiful Images

I'm not a pro photographer, it's been my hobby for yrs. I'm coming from a canon 5d mark II, 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. B&H gave me good price for my gear and I purchased this camera along with the FE 55 1.8 . I haven't tested night photos yet. Auto focus is tad slower than 5d but not much. Had hard time getting used to view finder. I love the way this camera feels in my hands. It seems very well built and the images are spectacular.

I use it mostly for video work and street photography, the new codec its great just learn to use the Picture profiles to get the most out of it in Grading, find within the picture profile and bring down detail to the lowest this will smooth the video a lot. With the firmware update the stabilization in video improved a lot, do it as soon as you get the camera.I'm moving from a d610 and wouldn't go back, it is a lot lighter and people don't get in... The best A7 series camera for me so far

I've used many cameras and I've owned A7 (original) and A7r. As a matter of fact I've shot over 10,000 shots with A7r. I also owned cameras like Canon 5DM3 and 6D, and Nikon D700, D600, and D800, and shot 10,000s of shots with them. So I have a good reference point. I also own Fuji XT1 and owned Olympus EM1, so I know what the mirrorless competition provides. And I do own Sony A6000 so I know what fast mirrorless AF is like. Also it should be not... Show More

Great Camera!

5 Axis in body stabilization Rocks. I have a number of lenses with no OSS. I was considering selling my Tamron 70-200 2.8. I used it on my A7 and would get motion blur on quite a few frames shooting in low light conditions. I can hand hold now with the same lens on the A7MK2 at 200mm and get sharp images at 1/60th! The changes to the ergonomics of the camera are also a plus. Better shutter release position and addition of two programmable function buttons on top near the shutter release. ++++++ Keep up the great work Sony!
