Samsung 1TB T5 Portable Solid-State Drive (Black)
Worked great for a while, then...
This is the second Samsung SSD drive I have owned and I own several others, from Sandisk, glyph, etc. This one seemed easy to reformat and was working like a champ. I used it to back up my machd under 10.11.16 (el capitan). Then one day, a couple of weeks after purchase, I plugged it in via USB A to my 2015 mac and it wouldn't mount, after about a minute, I would get an error message saying that I had unplugged the drive without ejecting it, whic... Compact, fast and reliable
This SSD is small and seems tough and well made. I bought this T5 for the express purpose of cloning my Mac OSX Mojave iMac 27 for part of my back-up plan with Time Machine plus a clone. For that purpose it works well. I run Time machine on a separate drive, and cloned my machine to the T5. This allows for specific file back-up access with Time Machine, or using the T5 for a fully functional start-up and disk repair with my whole computer in the ... Show More

Can't Be Trusted
Received the drive, tested it several times before taking it on the road. First time trying to backup all my photos, the drive became unresponsive. Verified the drive was defective by trying it access it on a variety of devices, including Windows, Mac and Android. (Was able to backup my photos to my spinning drive which I hoped to replace with the SSD.) Called Samsung and they exchanged the drive. The exchanged drive is apparently a refurbis... Show More

Excellent Drive; A Good Improvement on the T3
This is an absolutely excellent drive. It has best in class read and write speeds, and the tiny form factor makes it extremely easy and convenient to use. The seamless anodized aluminum enclosure is solid, beautiful, and helps dissipate heat (although the drive doesn't heat up much during use). The included USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A cables ensure universal connectivity for maximum utility. These help me connect to my 2017 Apple computers ... Show More

Not as good as the T3 for Macs
I have a few of the Samsung T3's in 1TB and 2TB sizes. This drive is somewhat faster, comes better packaged, but Samsung phoned it in when it came to the drivers installed on Macs. My High Sierra machines hung on installation and required reboots plus multiple installation attempts. Fortunately, once I got through those initial machine hangs and crashes, the drive itself showed great performance and stability. While I was eager to get m... Show More

Good drive, bad egg
Was really excited for this drive! I desperately need a quick drive to edit video off of but on that was still portable. Great look, simple packaging, and it was super fast (even faster if you take advantage of the full Usb-c to Usb-c connection which sadly my desktop doesnt have) As for the loss of the star this particular drive would unmount randomly, not while working thankfully. But I would go to the kitchen to grab a bite, come back and I w... Show More

Video editing, so far so good
I just purchased this 1tb Samsung SSD. Ive been using it for a couple of weeks as my scratch disk for FCPX while editing. Some people said they couldnt tell the difference from editing with an SSD as an external, but I definitely could tell a marked difference over my G-Drive ev Raw. I also think that my old drive mightve been going bad, but in any case there are way less lags and hold ups with my really old work 2012 MBP, and my more recent 2014... Show More

Good but used more power than expected.
I purchased this particular external SSD because it works with Android, and I don't currently bother with having a PC and I use only Android devices. My two devices with USB 2.0 had a write speed of about 35MBps, which is about as fast as those ports are going to do. My Essential Phone PH-1 Wrote at over 100MBps. Haven't done specific benchmarks, however those are acceptable speeds for the devices and my needs. I copied over 460GB from an ol... Show More

Poor documentation but great performance
Let me start out by saying that I probably use this SSD differently than what it was designed for. I use my 2017 IMac primarily for photography. I shoot primarily RAW files and I try and keep my iMac's internal SSD relatively uncluttered. I import my files to my Samsung T5 SSD, manage and process in LightRoom and backup automatically to an external hard drive using Time Machine. The Samsung T5 comes formatted as EXFAT which wont work with Time Ma... Show More

Great SSD, not enough memory.
Its small, well built and a really valuable piece of equipment to have. My only "complaint" is the storage size, 500gb is good but when you are working on multiple projects and need the space it might be a bit of a problem but in a way thats what we signed up for when we got it right? Another thing I have to say is that it is a little fragile, not as much as you'd expect but it isn't unbreakable either specially when it comes to where you connect... Show More

So far it is working great.
This is the second of these that I have used. Helped a friend get one and created an external backup drive with it. I use mine to boot and install Linux. I have several versions of Linux on the drive so I can boot any of them and install to a new computer. The drive is large enough that I can Timeshift multiple copies of fully configured systems into the Timeshift folder. Then on the new machine, I can Timeshift one of the fully configured sy... Well-designed, Fast and Stable at a Reasonable Price
I started using the 500GB version of this as a recording medium for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, and became an instant fan. Its a fraction of the price of its CFast 2.0 equivalents and can bolt onto a camera plate/cage with a number of third party mounting brackets that include built-in cable clamps. The included cables have their own velcro ties and are a good length for on-camera use. So far, its stood up to recording compressed RAW ... Show More

Excellent little unit
I bought this SSD for three purposes: a third backup for certain critical files (about 200GB), a fast scratch disk for Photoshop when working with large and complex images (200GB or so), and as a way to move a Windows virtual machine off my built-in SSD so as to free up space (about 150GB). With 1TB there's plenty of room left over. Its speed through my MacBook Pro's USB-C ports is such that there is no noticeable performance degradation of tho... Show More

Not for Mac OS
Second time I've been burned by Samsung drives. It isn't for MacOS. It says it is - but you have to use their proprietary software to prepare the drive. The software is flunky. Doesn't even recognize the drive is connected to the computer - so you go to the Samsung website for troubleshooting and downloading the updated software. I like the size, but doesn't seem that fast
I purchased this because I thought it was going to be lighting fast. I was even hoping to shoot tethered 200mb raw photos directly to the drive instead of my internal hard drive. But I don't think this drive is any faster that my normal 8tb external Western Digital hard drive. So many instances, I drag something like 150GB from my computer over to this SSD Samsung and it gives me something like 14 minutes. Then after that, I drag the same 150GB f... Show More

Ok I bought one of these the other day and for the most part so I'm impressed with how fast this little thing is. My only complaint is that it heats up fairly quickly. I transferred images off a portable hard drive I've been using and the T5 heated up fairly quickly. It was noticeably warm. This isn't a NoGo for me but I'm be watching this as the months go. Worthy Purchase
This reasonably priced SSD is a fast performer. I purchased three of them to replace my conventional HHDs, which house my image archives. After migrating about 2TB of data to the new drives (at agonizing HDD speeds), I can now access my archives in a jiffy. I understand that Samsung is coming out with a yet faster SSD, but T5 transfer speeds of 300-400 Mbs (via USB 3.0) are more than adequate for my needs (and the new ones will cost a lot... Show More

A no brainer
These Samsung 500G T5's were great at $40 or whatever more they were years ago when first released, and at $90 it's the best under $100 widget you can buy. I have several, none ever hiccuped, fit in a pocket instead of a bag, fast enough to run audio sessions off of, etc, etc. Not the latest, faster SSDs inside, but shaving 10 seconds off copying 50 G isn't nearly enough to entice me to current generation.
