Best in class, buy if the lens maps to your needs

Aug 22, 2019

This is the lens for you If you are into safari. It is also a good wildlife, nature, sports and action lens, including BIF, air shows, etc., although if you need the ultimate autofocus performance, you would have to consider one of the two Sony long primes (400/2.8 or 600/4). Having tried most if not all of the lenses in this category from other makers, the Sony 200-600 is easily the best in class. It is impressively sharp across most of the f... Show More

Perfect wildlife lens

Aug 15, 2019

This lens is amazing, very fast focus on the modern Sony mirorless cameras, shot on the a6400, the in lens stabilization allows hand held shots even at full zoom at 1/125 of a second. The quick zoom mechanism is great for acquiring the subject at 200 and zooming in to 600 with 1/4 of a rotation of the zoom ring, unlike the 100-400, which is much more cumbersome especially with its extending front lens group almost doubling the lens length. Pretty decent, great for the price

Aug 23, 2019

I had reasonable expectations for this lens, being what it is for $2k. I was not expecting the level of sharpness at pixel peeping level of a $10k+ lens, and if you are, I'd adjust your thinking accordingly. It is pretty sharp for what it is at this zoom range and price point. Focus is fast on my a7r3, especially using the focus limiter on the lens. Images still retain their sharpness with the 1.4x extender; I don't have the 2x to try since betwe... Show More

Superb Lens

Aug 18, 2019

Fed Ex delivered my lens two days ago and I took it out with my Sony A7D3 Friday afternoon and yesterday so I haven't had a lot of time with it yet. To me build quality is excellent and so far I am very favorably impressed with the lens with no dislikes. I had no problem using autofocus - it was right on and crisp. All images were sharp when checked at 100% in Adobe Bridge. I especially noticed the excellent bokeh on those images shot using this ... Show More

Big, Heavy, but Sweet

Sep 13, 2019

Before this, my longest lens had been 200 mm. I was excited to open new possibilities. The shocker has been the size and weight. I'm sure it compares favorably to other lenses in it's class, but I have never owned one of those. I gave up trying to make a spot in my bag, and carry the lens on it's strap over my shoulder. I would prefer to carry the strap across my chest, but the provided strap is not long enough to carry it that way. So I am about... Show More

VALUE + QUALITY = TOTAL SATISFACTION

Mar 25, 2020

Hi, I am not a wealthy person, I am a photographer that doesnt make his living with his equipment either. So value and quality is paramount for me. I am mostly in to nature and birding with some action sports. I throw some landscape and macro in here there. But birding was the driving force for this purchase. I live on Island and I am surrounded by wetlands. I have all Sony equipment A7Riii 70-200 GM , 24-70GM that was the initial set up I bought... Show More

Best Sony Lens for Wildlife/Sport.

Jan 11, 2020

I use the Sony a6400 as my Camera of choice. I have had to used my Dad's Sigma 150-600mm Sport Lens with the MC-11 Adapter to be able to get Wildlife Photos. It's Heavy, Cumbersome, External Zoom making it front heavy, Just an all in all difficult lens to use for Wildlife. Especially Birds in flight. I then bought my Own super Telephoto Lens and went with the Sony 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS LENS and I got to say, it is night and day in comparison... Show More

The best long range telephoto zoom for Sony E-mount

Mar 15, 2020

I've used several different long range telephoto zoom lens and adapter combinations on just about every E mount camera over the past decade. If you need an all-around excellent performer, this outpaces them all. It's faster than the G1 and G2 150-600 Tamrons. It beats the Sigmas too. I contend it's also sharper than the rest. It's portable as can be in this range. Of course, a tripod or monopod are best, but I'm firmly past my youth and have hand... Show More

Great lens great price

Aug 29, 2019

Being weaned on two RX10s I missed the reach of the 600mm. I looked and tried the 200-400 GM a tack sharp lens. However, I wanted the extra reach. Not being a Pro I wasnt going to spend on a 600 mm f4 lens, the cost of a decent motorcycle. My wait was rewarded with the 200-600mm G. After testing I have found it sharp at @2:1 throughout the range. I found my Acratech with Manfrotto carbon pod allowed too much bounce and sag. While these products ... Show More

Not without its problems, but certainly worth the money.

Sep 15, 2019

Pre-ordered it, and got it upon arrival to market. Have been shooting with it, mounted on my A9, for the past 10 days (since I got it). Early days (only three sessions so far). It replaced my Sigma 500mm APO DG + Kenko Teleplus x1.4 MC (my go-to setup in the past 3 years) Pros: (1) Lightweight & short, compared even side-by-side with Nikon legendary 200-500, and for sure side-by-side the Tamron 150-600 G2. (2) Very silent focus mechanism, and qui... Show More

A well thought out design for a big lens

Aug 22, 2019

This lens completes my kit of Sony lenses. (Yes, my spouse has heard that before and doesn't believe it either.) After only a couple of weeks I am convinced it was designed by photographers. Internal focusing simplifies useand balance on a tripod as well as improving weather sealing. Thanks to the layout it is a pleasure to use this lens. Images are crisp at 600mm in contrast to my past long lenses. Focus speed with my A7R3 is not as fast as hope... Show More

Great Value, Sharp Optics, and Yes it is Slow

Oct 23, 2019

I've had several extensive shoots with this lens, initially as a rental and then using one I purchased. I was concerned by reviews lamenting the slow (dark) nature of this lens, but found for the uses I want it for (primarily wildlife) it is fine for most conditions. I have been pleased by its performance with elk in the field, shooting the moon, and catching birds in flight. If I lived in a cloudier area, did sports photography, or had lots of m... Show More

What I've been waiting for

Sep 5, 2019

The 200-600mm is the prefect product: great price point, very acceptable image quality, internal zoom (big plus!), quick focusing, solidly built, polished functionality. Could it be better? Of course, but if you're looking for 600mm prime pin point sharpness then you'll need to spend $10k more. This lens is so much better than the stone knives & bearskins approach of a Tamron 150-600mm A mount and the A to E adapter. It was awful. It felt like ... Show More

Jan 13, 2020

The tech specs speak for themselves but the comfort of this lens would lead me to give 6 stars if I were allowed. I am a long time user of long lenses for birds and other wildlife and went from the canon 500mm F4 beast to the Sigma 150-600 zoom 2 years ago. The zoom gives you more flexibility for safari situations and is lighter. The slower speed is compensated by modern high ISO performance of cameras. This year I switched from Canon to Sony and... Sep 13, 2019

I've only had this lens for a few weeks but I'm loving it. Eye and face auto focus work excellent with both the a7r3 and the a9 (with the software updates installed). A bit slower than the 100-400 but seemingly just as sharp. It is also small enough to fit in a medium large camera pack with two bodies, and a 16mm 2.8, 24-70mm 2.8 and either the 90 mm 2.8 or 135mm. Plus extra essentials. The price is right and if you don't want to carry a 6000 cu ... Show More

Ive had this lens for a few days now and Im very excited to get out and really put it through its paces. The internal zoom is great for balance and, while the lens is heavy, its also not cumbersome or over the top. Image quality seems good and the zoom it great. The lens also comes with strap mounts on the barrel so you can place the weight on the huge lens instead of the camera body stressing the mount, so thats a plus. However, the shade isnt f... Rented this lens: Good, sharp imaging, fast autofocus, good image stabilization, excellent bokeh, internal zoom is great, lugs for strap attachment is Sony using their heads. Price is right. 3 minor cons: Weight - 6.11 lbs on a Sony mirrorless but a typical weight for long-reach telephotos; Zoom ring is a bit too loose so it can change with the slightest touch, and it can creep a bit, though the internal zoom and turn max travel are both excelle... I have been using this lens on my a7mk3 and a9 for two weeks with my agility dogs. Love it so far. I have yet to explore all the controls switches and buttons on it. This is my preliminary feedback. It is light for handheld shoot, focus tracking is awesome. Internal zoom and short zoom rotation from 200mm - 600mm are a big plus. Pictures are sharp with good lighting at wide open aperture. AWESOME LENS!

Dec 31, 2019

I went back and forth about buying this lens- I already I own the 100-400GM, 70-200GM as well as the 1.4X and 2X teleconverters. However, on a recent trip to Sri Lanka it quickly became my go to lens for wildlife and birding. Even with the 1.4X converter under heavy canopy it still performed incredibly well. While the speed of the 600mm F4 GM would have been nice, flexibility, as animals moved closer, would have been comprised. I found the build ... Show More

I'm replacing an adapted 500mm f4 with this. I've tested the lens shooting Surf as well as Motocross and it performed superbly. This will now be my go-to lens for surf (for moto I normally used the 70-200). The tracking in still and video was excellent and I'll only be keeping the adapted 500mm for low-light circumstances where I absolutely need that extra light. Disappointing

Aug 18, 2019

I so much wanted this lens to be great, since it fills a huge hole in the Sony lineup, and would have been tremendously useful to me. After using it for one week, I'm returning it, reluctantly. I cannot get a photo with acceptable sharpness when zoomed it, and the bokeh is unpleasing. Being careful to avoid motion blur, using a tripod, and with lower ISO's, I'm still getting unsatisfactory results. I'm really disappointed, as this comes nowhere c... Show More

Lives up to its hype!

Aug 22, 2019

I bought this when I began to see reviewers raving about it and sample image after sample image on YouTube. It was supposed to be sharper at 600mm than the lovely 100-400 with a 1.4x TC. And, that seems to be true. I have been shooting at extreme ranges at 600mm and 840mm with noticeably better IQ than my former 150-600mm lenses from Tamron and Sigma. I love that it zooms and focuses internally and has a short zoom ring throw. Its longer and heavier than the 100-400mm, but at age 77 I can handle it well enough and for long periods, I use a monopod. I am very satisfied with my purchase.
